Option in desktop mac / which is better?

My husband plays games on his desk top with 17in screen which is not MAC. For his birthday I thought it would be good to give him a 22-27in monitor as I can get a good one for about low $200.00. Than I thought, why not just get a (used) mini mac to go with it. Than I thought again and started wondering is it better to go with used mini and new flat monitor or get a used imac?
I'm pretty sure that I can get the used mini and new monitor for cheaper price but I really like the wide screen mac monitors... My husband likes to play games, use itunes, burn DVD, Photo... and ect....
Can anyone tell me which is better way to go and what exactly I should be looking at? I need model number and you need to draw me a picture what I should be pricing or I won't understand...
Thanks for helping the girl who rides the short bus when it comes to computers.

Its me... again... to continue the last question, I just read that mac mini is not good for game playing??? because most of the games need xp or some other thing that mac doesn't have?? can u confirm?

  • How can I sync my iPhone to iCloud and also to my desktop Mac (which can't sync to iCloud)?

I would like to sync my iPhone to iCloud (since MobileMe is about to be removed) for backup, but my desktop Mac doesn't connect to iCloud as I run Snow Leopard (not running Lion, and I have no intention of installing Lion, having heard how many problems that caused to my friends).
Having tried to sync to iCloud with the phone, I'm now unable to sync with my desktop iCal or Address Book. Now, none of my appointments and reminders are being transferred between the two.
    Any suggestions?

I would have to look at iTunes on an older version of OS X (I run Lion), but I believe it is possible to sync contacts on the phone with both Address book and iCloud via iTunes. This is normally a bad idea as the assumption is you would be syncing the Mac Address book with iCloud and would end up creating a sync loop and duplicate entries with every sync.  You'll have to see.
It might be a better idea to switch to syncing contacts with Google until and unless you intend to upgrade OS X to Lion.

  • My friend bought the Lion upgrade for her MacBook.  She would also like to upgrade her desktop Mac which is current running Leopard.  Does she have to buy SnowLeopard for her Mac first?  Both computers use the same apple ID and password.

My friend bought the Lion upgrade for her MacBook.  She would also like to upgrade her desktop Mac to Lion which is currently running Leopard.  Does she have to first buy a SnowLeopard upgrade for her desktop?  And will the upgrade from SnowLeopard to Lion then be free?  Both computers use the same apple ID.

She needs to purchase Snow Leopard but she can re download Lion on the desktop for free after Snow Leopard is installed.
And definitely use the same Apple ID to download Lion on the desktop.

  • Looking to buy a new Mac, which is better Mac Air or Pro?

I currently own a 13.3inch LED-backlit widescreen notebook Mac book pro from 2011 and am looking to upgrade. I'm in my last year of high school and will be starting college next year. I'm really into photography, and use my computer for all my notes and assignments in class. SD card slot is prefreable. Really lost as to what I should get, not looking to spend over $1,500.00 (roughly, open to ideas). Is it worth buying an 11'inch basic? If so how can I connect my SD card? ANY help is very appreciated:)

13" Air with 8gig of RAM
11" Air doesnt have a SD card slot.  Ive owned both 11 and 13" Air, still have a 13", and also a current pro.
If as you said you plan on much photo editing, then definitely get the 13"
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density

  • IPad or Mac? which is better worth the money?

iPad or Mac? which one is better worth the money, if mac, which is the cheapest but still gives you all the good apps and qualities? I would use it alot, and i already have an iouch so would the ipad be worth it? im a teenager so i would use these things alot, and i need some features to help with school and just having fun!!

iPad is not a substitute for a Mac. It's more like a companion to a Mac.
In desktops, Mac mini should be sufficient and is the only comparable Mac in terms of price, but you need to add a monitor, keyboard.
In laptops, consider the MacBook Air for its portability, and the MacBook Pro for more options in terms of processing and screen size.
Visit an Apple Store (the physical kind). The staff is very helpful and will assist ou in making a decision.

  • Which is better for solving Mac issues

I have been experiencing Kernel Panics and program crashes. I want something that is good for testing hardware and OS issues. Can either of these find corrupted data files? I am looking at two utilities for purchase. Which is better for solving Mac Issues?
    TechTool Pro
    or
    Disk Warrior?

When you say "complete bootable backup" do you mean that it contains the OS + all my applications? Basically a clone of the start-up?
Yes, you have that very clear. I use Tri-backup or CCC for this normally, but there are other options.
If I have this clone, and I start getting issues on my Mac, I can Zero the HD and reinstall the OS via the clone (including all the applications)?
Yes, and if pressed for time you can just keep working off the Clone.
I can Zero the HD and reinstall the OS via the clone (including all the applications)?
Yep, right back to 100%, excluding HW issues.
With all my software... it takes a day to reinstall all of it to a complete image.
Yes, the only sensible thing is a Clone... or two. Most problems can be overcome by simply Verifying/Repairing the HD once in awhile, Repairing Permissions before and after every update/upgrade, and turning off Auto Updates in SW Update CP... wait a couple of weeks and check these forums for the number of problems with any update.
PS. DiskWarrior has saved me hundreds of times from having to do complete new Installs or cloning back of Installs, I figure that's saved me 10's of thousands of hours & grief... I appreciate Alsoft so much that I don't even go for the generous upgrade offers on new versions... I just buy the new version completely at Retail.
PPS. Funny thing, you'll read something like DiskWarrior is a one Pony Dog Show or something... just does one thing... I just have to laugh outloud... Yeah, the one thing is... cure my incurable Mac Problems 99.9% of the time!

Using it primarily with VMWare Fusion for Virtual Drives. Windows, Unbuntu and other OS running really well.
HPT Support was responsive and very helpfull using the WEB Portal under the product page.
I have some comments and a suggestion:
Have you tried your setup with a SD/CF combo card reader (like the Lexar or Kingston FCR-H63)? Does the card appear on the desktop when first plugged in?
Did you need to fool around with any kind of power issues in installing this card in the x4 PCIe slot of the MacPro?
Suggestion. Have you tried one of the fixed in this article to cure the BT issues in MacPro 3,1?
    Good luck.

  • When my desktop (Mac Power 5) starts a folder comes up with 2 heads which changes to a question mark. Does anyone know how to fix this.?

My Husband turned his desktop off without shutting down now When my desktop (Mac Power G5) starts up  a folder comes up with 2 heads which changes to a question mark. Does anyone know how to fix this.?

Step 1- Try booting to Startup Manager by holding Option/Alt key.
Select the boot source and click the right arrow.
Once booted, open System Preferences and select the desired boot volume.
Replacing the PRAM battery is likely wise if the machine keeps forgetting it's boot source.
    If that doesn't work,
Step 2-  Boot holding a mouse click, insert the OS X install disc and hold C to boot to the install disc.
Once booted, open Disk Utility and "Repair Disk" on the boot drive.
    Once done, reboot normally.

  • The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Question: The desktop on which I had Lightroom and PhotoshopCC installed failed and I no longer have access to it. How do I deactivate the software on those machines so that I can reinstall it on my new Mac?

Absolutely - but I had no idea there were two versions. When I got my new laptop I just went to the Adobe site to download and install LR5. It never asked if I had a license; it just directed me to install CC to start a trial which I thought I could license after downloading. Several sessions and many hours of looking through the forums and Google for an answer I never ran across anything that made this distinction. I still haven't found a path from www.adobe.com that would get me to the standalone download page (it's probably there, wasn't obvious to me) and looking at the download page it doesn't make any CC/standalone distinction.
There are many places I could have gotten a hint - for instance the license could be tagged "stand alone edition", the CC-version could recognize the stand-alone key and either accept it or produce a more meaningful error message, or the download site or the CC app could ask if I had previously purchased a key, etc.
It was my error to assume this was a deactivation problem, but it looked the same as a previous deactivation problem with Photoshop.
In any event, thank you for your help.

  • Which is better - Mac book pro or air book ?

Which is better a Mac book pro or an air book.  What is the pros and cons in using ??

It depends on your preference and how you will use it. Example, if you're a designer, engineer, doing a lot of video editing, sound editing, then you'll appreciate the horsepower the Pro which means "Professional" can offer you. If you're a student, or someone who'll be using primarily for document making or presentation, then the Air would fit you, plus a bonus with the name Air which means "ultra light". The big difference though is the processing speed of the two laptops. The Pro uses full processor speed, while the Air for thermal concerns uses a slightly slower processor.
Good Luck picking the one which will suit you

I got told that Windows is better than Mac.

    4. Is an iMac harder to use than a Windows computer?

  • Which is Better? Mac or PC?

    Which is Better?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hello,
I'm not going to argue that a Mac is better, but I do have a response to:
looking computers and the software is great however
they have major compatibility issues. for example
many websites do not support mac's Ex.
    www.aircanada.com
I have never had any problem exchanging documents or viewing web pages with the Mac.
All my document exchanges have worked flawlessly, and work going both to and from Windows PC's.
But, you need to make sure you are using the right program on the Mac if you want to share files with PC users.
As for the website compatibility, the site you provided as an example will work just fine. They just don't want you to know it.
What that website is doing, is running a check to see what web-browser you are using. Beyond that, they are also running a check to see which computer you are using.
So, what you need to do is make sure that your browser tells their website what it wants to hear.
So, in Safari, you can use the "Debug" menu to have Safari report itself as the Windows version of Internet Explorer.
Go to the Debug menu, then pick "User Agent", then choose: "Windows MSIE 6.0".
If the site still won't load, then go to the site first, and perform the selection again from the Debug menu.
Basically, what you are doing is changing what Safari identifies itself as.
Additionally, the website that you listed does list that it is compatible with Mac OS 9.0 or later. So, it should work provided you pass it's checks.
If for some reason it still won't work, contact them since they say that it is compatible with the Mac.
The only sites that absolutely will not work with a Mac are sites that use "Active X" to take over control of your computer or communicate directly with the operating system. Fortunately, those sites are getting rarer and rarer.
The only site I've run across in recent times that uses Active X is Microsoft's Windows Update site (which you wouldn't need with a Mac anyway).
As for enabling the "Debug" menu in Safari, if it is not already there, you can do that by:
    Closing Safari
Open "Terminal" which is located at:
Hard Drive --> Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal
Then type the following at the command line:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
If you would prefer an automated method of enabling the Debug menu, you can always download the free Safari Enhancer program which includes a setting for this feature:
