Option to save snapshots in the file!!

Snapshots are such a great feature that allow to have different versions and trys of a file. It is really bad for the work process that it is not possible to save those snapshots in the file. The only way is to save them as different files. Layer Comps are nice, but are not as powerful. Snapshots allow to save different states of the document or completely different versions, without the need to duplicate all layers and then to change the visability of layers. That's not practical and error prone. Also if there is a crash there was no way to just save the file during working. This is my #1 feature request!
Marcus

Yes, and No. The size of a single file becomes large, but if I would save each snapshot state as a seperate file (which is the only way to preserve the states at the moment) the sum of the files sizes of those files is definetely larger than the size of a single file, because of all the redundant layers. If you chose to copy the whole layers set of each version and disable unused ones it also adds up more file size and this way you save each state in the same document, too, but without the easy handling of snapshots.
Working with seperate files is a bad crutch, because if I'm playing around with different versions I might have to redo work in each file. (Often I'm experimenting with different colors or placements and sizes). I also don't see the file size as a problem anymore. There is so much space wasted for so many things that I happily use the space for my benefit. The benefit of an option to save snapshots in a document weighs so much more.
Further the snapshot information of an open document is stored in RAM or in temp files on the disc anyway. So the information is already saved. The space will be freed of course if the file is properly closed, but if I need the snapshots for further use I need to save them anyway somewhere.
If I'm experiencing a crash of Photoshop, the OS, or just a power outage all my snapshots are gone. I had serious problems due to the bluetooth bug in the vista drivers that caused a blue screen when you brought your system into or out of stand-bye or hypernation. Unfortunatley stand-bye and hypernation are the only possibilities to not erase the snapshots and be able to continue working on them later. If I didn't save the document in the state of the main version and just played with a suboptimal version my main version was gone (and often I had more than one main version). I had to create seperate files from each snapshot an save them all. Definetely to much to think and care about. Photoshop should make work easier.
Snapshots would make it very easy and straight forward to present different variations of an idea to a client, too.

    Hi Carolyn,
It sounds as though the filename extension association has become confused on your system. It's odd that it happened after conversion, but it should be easy to fix nonetheless.
Here are some instructions for changing file associations on both Mac OS and Windows:
Change File Associations in Mac OS X - OS X Daily
Change which programs Windows uses by default ... (Windows 7)
Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help (Windows Vista)

  • Could not save Preferences because the file is locked?

Every time I launch Photoshop I have to reload third party extensions, and re-do preferences settings.
When I quit, I get a warning icon.
Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to acess the file.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Solved it after 8 hours of trying.
Hold down "Command" "option" and "shift" keys and open Photoshop. It will ask if you want to delete settings. Say Yes. You will have to reset everything but it clears the problem away instantly.

  • Could not save preferences because the file could not be found (Windows) then Error 1 on PS,AE,PR,ID

I was trying out Photoshop, everything was running fine then one day when I close it I get an error:
"Could not save preferences because the file could not be found..."
Now when I boot it I get the Configuration Error 1.
After Effects still boots, but it reset all my preferences there. For example the workplace layout was reset, all my saved Output presets were removed and my memory-cache and performance settings were reset again.
Premiere and InDesign get the error too and won't boot.
This is the second time it has happened, I'll try wiping every Adobe program and reinstalling all over again, but it had run fine before for a while and it randomly happened.
Any idea how to fix this?

Nope I havent touched the Documents folder.
Forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 7

  • Photoshop CS 5.5 - "Could not save [filename] because the file is locked..........."

    Hi,
We have a few iMacs here all running 10.8.4 - we have PhotoShop CS 5.5 and all the artwork etc is saved on a shared server ( Windows 2008 r2)   and we are forever getting these problems......
Only in photoshop we get the following error message......
"Could not save [filename] because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privilege. Use the 'Get info' command in the finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders"
Can't see this been an access issue so really don't know whats causing this other than the fact it's just server based...
    Please please please somebody help.

I have been hqving this issue on windows after I upgraded to internet explorer 10 and using outlook (hotmail.com) to attach images to an email.
After a file saved via photoshop (i assum any programe not just photoshop will cause this problem) is attached in outlook to an email, IE10 will not let go of that file.  meaning if you update the image in Photoshop and try and save over the existing jpg you previously attached it will give this error, file locked or file permissions needed etc.
Just posting this info incase you are using email to attach files and then getting these permisssion problems.
I work around it by closing the outlook browser tab (the email), so it lets go of the file, I can then save ontop of the file no problem, I then open outlook as needed.

  • Help please! "Could not save as *** because the file...."

I'm getting this error message when I try to save my files and it is happening often enough that it bothers me. This is very sudden - within the last week or two. I have Photoshop CS5, using Windows 7. I get the error message "Could not save as *** because the file is already in use or was left open by another application."
I haven't done anything new to my computer or installed anything new, I've been using CS5 successfully since this summer when I first installed it on this brand new computer. Not sure why it's doing this now.
When it happens, it does leave a .tmp file behind with each instance. I saved one this time just in case it's needed to determine the problem - normally I just delete it and try again. When I try multiple times, it eventually saves. But when I'm a professional photographer and have 100's of images to save, I just can't deal with this problem. Can anyone help? I'd be grateful!

Are you saying you've disabled Spyware Doctor and it now works?  I'd toss that software out in a heartbeat if so.  Anti-malware software that interferes with your normal operation of your computer is not something to be accepted!
Microsoft's Windows Defender is a decent substitute.  I also personally prefer Avast Pro antivirus.  Both are unobtrusive.

  • How do I prevent Firefox from locking up when I click on "Save As" under the "File" menu (resetting Firefox didn't solve the problem)?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium OS on Dell XPS 420 system. Firefox locks up each time I click on "Save As" under the "File" menu. Resetting Firefox did NOT solve the problem. If, instead of using Firefox, I log on to a website using Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer, the "Save As" feature works fine, as it should. I would occasionally like to save a web page, using "Save As" while using Firefox, instead of copying the page to a Word Document, and then saving it.

    Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the follow up.
From what you wrote, you have Premiere Elements 10. Is that on Windows 7 64 bit or other. For now I will assume Windows 7 64 bit. If version 10 is on Windows 7 or 8 64 bit it is a 64 bit application running in the 64 bit system which makes it possible for full use of the 64 bit resources. That is good news especially when you are trying to take a large project to completion.
You set up the project preset in the new project dialog to match the properties of your source media. That setting directs the program to establish the right space in the Edit Mode Monitor for editing purposes. That project preset also directs the program as to what disc menu set (s, w, or hd) will be available to you in the disc menu section. The project preset also has more subtle effects on the project settings.
What is you plan for exporting your Timeline, export to file saved to the computer hard drive or burn to disc DVD or Blu-ray? Keep in mind that the setting for the project preset do not prohibit variations in the export choice under most conditions. If you post a description of your source media and how you would like to export it, I will offer some very specific guidelines on that.
If you do go the purchased book route, please try for one which is specific to your version 10. There has been a marked change in interface starting with version 11. Often principles remain the same from version to version, but features do not. And, I always write "It is very frustrating to be armed with principles when you cannot find a feature."
I suggest that you start with the Premiere Elements 10 Help PDF and then decide what next.

    Also check out
    http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-premiere-elements-10/
A lot of these links that say version 10, roll over to 11.
Steve Grisetti, the moderator of this forum, writes books on Premiere Elements if you are interested in the purchased book route.
Hope the information above is helpful. Above all do not hesitate to ask if you have questions on your Premiere Elements workflow or need clarification on anything written.
    Thanks.

  • How can I save or export the file containing stored usernames and passwords?

I'm about to update my desktop computer's operating system, which will mean my hard drive will be wiped. I want to save any file Firefox might have that contains usernames and passwords so I don't have to rebuild that file once Firefox is reinstalled. I've found such files for extensions and bookmarks but not for passwords.

    In article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_Manager#Backing_up_and_restoring_passwords
*'''Backing up and restoring passwords '''
**Firefox '''''3.5 and later versions''''', including current beta and nightly builds, use '''''signons.sqlite'''''.
    *'''Troubleshooting'''
**Firefox '''''3.5 and later versions''''' use the file '''''signons.sqlite''''' to store the encrypted names and passwords. passwords.
**You can rename '''''signons.sqlite''''' to signons.sqlite.sav to make Firefox '''''3.5+''''' versions use the file signons#.txt from a previous Firefox 3 or 2 version.
