Options for a simple local cloud storage solution

hi,
i have the above question. I have 2 Apple Time Capsule Routers. One Ac and the other is the older Wireless-N Version set up as a Bridge. I also have the device called Transporter Sync. What I really need is a way that I can create a folder with a set of permissions of some kind that will allow me to send a link to people and allow them a secure link to view and download large photo and video files and some doc fileson my own local HDD NAS.
I do not want the users to have to sign up for an account or download software, way to complecated. This is why Transporter does not solve my problem. Unless I am missunderstanding how transporter works. If I open up my TC then anyone can gain access from what I have been told. Is there any other product out on the market that might fit my needs?
THanks,
John

To remote access files somewhere on your network is not easy and allows people you don't want to also access the system.
The standard methods for hosting files like FTP are not readily setup with Apple routers of late.. ie it is blocking FTP.
I do not see any details for standard remote access on the Transporter Sync. It is all tied up with the various apps, and they are almost all designed for private rather than public access.
The specs list. Optional local access via CIFS / SMB
It if it offers nothing more than that it is really unsuitable.
Do you have a different router or is the TC your main router??
If so you really have little choice but to use one of the remote access methods that is allowed by that.
My solution would be to replace the TC with a vpn router.. these are readily available and cheap enough.. VPN is secure.. and if you use dynamic IP from your ISP it has simple DDNS setup.. whereas the Apple is not easy.
Why not host the files you want others to access in cloud .. it is much easier.. faster for you, as you don't have several people using your limited upload for access.. and you post the files once.

  • What is the best cloud storage solution to free up space on an iPad?

My elderly parents use an iPhone and iPad as their only computers.  They have hit their space limit for their 16 gb ipad because of photos and home videos.  They don't have a computer to download photos to.
Have you used a cloud solution to get files off the iPad? What do you recommend and why?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Dropbox has an automatic camera upload and comes with free space, but there are others.

  • Single best external storage solution for Mac Pro & MacBook Pro ...?

    Hello,
I'm still waiting for the Mac Pro delivery I have around me something like four external hard drives from different vendors and different sizes and all containing important data ... it is really a mess, cables, lack of redundancy, etc.
I wanted to replace all these once and for all by a single elegant long-lasting and reliable solution to combine with my new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. The best I could find was OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 8.0TB containing four internal HDD in double RAID with multiple possible setups: RAID 0 and RAID 1, RAID 10 configurations:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T8.0S/
Looks like an excellent choice for the only one external storage solution! does anyone has experience with this model? are there better contenders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Best regards,
    Giovanni

    Giovanni,
I have the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (6 TB) external HD array in a Raid 5 configuration (as received from OWC). I have found it to be excellent when connected to my Mac Pro using a PCI SATA card and the SATA output on the Elite-AL Pro Qx2. The speed of the system under Raid 5 easily supports all but uncompressed high definition video, and the system came with Prosoft's Data Backup software which does an excellent job of backing up other external drives installed on my Mac Pro.
I highly recommend the Qx2 and think you will find it is a good single source solution to providing you with reliable and safe storage for your data. With Raid 5 if one of the HD's in the Qx2 fails, you simply remove it and allow the system to rebuild the data when you insert a new HD. Thus unless two HD's fail simultaneously (high unlikely) you are protected against data loss. Note also that your Mac Pro does not have to be left on while the Qx2 is rebuilding.

  • What about 3rd party cloud storage file access via bridge?

First of all, lets all agree to get some training to the help chat lines.  Inder was one I was chatting with and as I was typing another challenging question to the just down stupid answer I got being treated as an idiot, he or she cut me off, closed the chat and stated thank you for using Adobe chat support.  I guess the stats on how fast you deal with an issue is far more important than proving a viable service Adobe.  YES I AM F!@#$%G MAD.
So I found out that Bridge went out of their way in development  to stop me from organizing and or just opening files from DropBox. All I wanted to do was conveniently open a JPG in RAW for some preliminary editing before bring the file into Photoshop CC. A feature that Adobe has been ranting and bragging about for a while.  When I tried this GREAT feature in Bridge as it were, I could not even open the shortcut to the folders where I store my photos in the cloud DropBox. When I persisted, Bridge eventually crashed.  I am sure that was some easy code to put in there to teach me a lesson for not buying Adobe cloud storage.
So, after had spending 1000s and 1000s of dollars on Adobe products over the last 20 + years, I get treated as an idiot, an undereducated consumer, no respect and have to adhere to timeline restraints to meet a undereducated / under-trained so called specialist stats she he she won't get reprimanded or loose their job.
So here is my knowledge to the issue at hand.  I can not navigate Internet Based Cloud services without having to download them to my desktop first using Bridge CC.  Thus rendering this app useless when most if not all project files are on the cloud.  (Using the cloud makes so much sense in my case as a collaborator, project lead - manager, teacher in the arts of multimedia and a professional photographer).
Seems like there is no solution from Adobe, so my question to the forum is, what apps are you using to get around this issue.  Adobe doesn't deserve my loyalty anymore and must EARN IT BACK! Third party solutions free or otherwise is welcomed.

  • How to store pictures in the cloud storage

Can you store pictures in the cloud service? What would the cost be and if at all possible or is it only for music..Thanks...

    jofromflorida wrote:
Jason, is there a way to store the photos into a permanent cloud storage and keep them there? I guess, something like the itunes music, where apple saves all of your music....Thank you for the site, which has helped me considerably to understand what it is all about...Ciao, Jo
Jo, not that I'm aware of as an offering from Apple. While the photo stream can serve that purpose for a finite period of time (it's a rolling 1,000) if you're looking for web/cloud hosting or something similar to the galleries feature that .Mac/MobileMe offered you'll need to seek it elsewhere. The good news, there are numerous cloud storage services out there most of which offer free storage ranging between 2GB and 5GB.
I personally use Dropbox.com for photo galleries and cloud storage/file sharing. But there's several to pick from and all of them are quite good.

  • Simple drawing/sketch(/chat) solution, 2 computers simultaneously

    Hi!
Topic already says it: I'm searching for a simple drawing/sketch/chat solution, 2 computers simultaneously. Priority about like this:
    1) Simplicity
    2) Responsiveness
3a) Would be neat to have two working, independent mouse pointers & keyboard "foci" that work at the same time and visible on both PC's
3b) Well, one shared pointer would do it, too then I'd use irc or something to "coordinate"
    X) advanced drawing / networking features I don't really need, but as long as they don't get in the way...
I'm not planning on drawing a masterpiece with that, nor do I want to set up an encrypted server that allows 1000 people to draw at once - just two computers, simple sketches, simultaneously.
Now...: What's the solution for this that fits best?
    - should I just try to figure out how to have X-windows in general register with two x-servers at once and use GIMP - although I don't need even one 10th its abilities for this? I don't know yet if it's possible/intended to do that like this, but if it is and someone can tell me a good search term, google should be able to teach me.
    - Is there some program that is really specialised on doing something like that? All I could find were various "online - pen&paper - chat/sketch/rolldice"-tools and none of them looked too comforting (plus: they mostly look a bit... silly... for a more general purpose, but that shall not hold me back nor shall the "random treasure chest" menu entry, for I have to power to just ignore it! ) but if someone can recommend a specific one that is suited well, I'll give it a try!
    - Anything else that can help me find the right way for me to do that?
    Thanks!

You should search thru this or the AS3 forum for a posting from last year (or several from the same person) looking to do what you wanted to do.  I believe multiple postings resulted from this person refusing to accept they wouldn't be able to do it, or at least that no one was going to take the time to figure out a solution and give it away.  Logistically and technically it would be a complex design if it could be implemented.

  • What's the best storage solution for a large iLife? RAID? NAS?

I'm looking for an affordable RAID storage solution for my Time Machine, iTunes Library, iMovie videos, and iPhoto Library. To this point I've been doing a hodgepodge of external hard drives without the saftey of redundancy and I've finaly been bitten with HD failures. So I'm trying to determine what would be the best recommendation for my scenario. Small Home Office for my wife's business (just her), and me with all our media. I currentlty have a mid-2010 Mac Mini (no Thunderbolt), she has an aging 2007 iMac and 2006 MacBook Pro (funny that they're all about the same benchmark speed). We have an AppleTV (original), iPad2 and two iPhone 4S's.
1st Question: Is it better to get a RAID and connect it to my Airport Extreme Base Station USB port as a shared disk? OR to connect it directly to my Mac Mini and share through Home Sharing? OR Should I go with a NAS RAID?
2nd Question: Simple is Better. Should I go with a Mac Mini Server and connect drives to it? (convert my Mac Mini into a server) or Should I just get one of those nice all-in-one 4-bay RAID drive solutions that I can expand with?
    Requirements:
    1. Expandable and Upgradeable. I don't want something limited to 2TB drives, but as drives get bigger and cheaper I want to easily throw one in w/o concerns.
    2. Simple integration with Time Machine and my iLife: iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto. If iTune's Home Sharing feature is currently the best way of using my media across multiple devices then why mess with it? I see "DLNA certified" storage on some devices and wonder if that would just add another layer of complexity I don't need. One more piece to make compatible.
    3. Inexpensive. I totally believe in the "You Get What You Pay For" concept. But I also realize sometimes I'm buying marketing, not product. I imagine that to start, I'm going to want a diskless system (because of $$$) to throw all my drives into, and then upgrade bigger drives as my data and funds grow.
    4. Security. I don't know if its practical, but I like the idea of being able to pop two drives out and put them in my safe and then pop them back in once a week for the backup/mirroring. I like this idea because I'm concerned that onsite backup is not always the safest. Unfortunately those cloud based services aren't designed for Terabytes of raw family video, or an entire media library that isn't wholey from the iTunes Store. I can't be the only one facing this challenge. Surely there's an affordable way to keep a safe backup for the average Joe. But what is it?
    5. Not WD. I've had bad experiences with Western Digital drives, and I loathe their consumer packaged backup software that comes preloaded on their external drives. They are what I meant when I say you get what you pay for. Prettily packed garbage.
    6. Relatively Fast. I have put all my media on an external drive before (back when it fit on one drive) and there's noticeable spool-up hang time. Thunderbolt's nice and all, but so new that its not easily available across devices, nor is it cheap. eSata is not really an option. I love Firewire but I'm getting the feeling that Apple has made it the red-headed step-child of connections. USB 3.0 looks decent, but like eSata, Apple doesn't recognize it exists. Where does that leave us? Considering this dilemma I really liked Seagate's GoFlex external drives because it meant I could always buy a new base and still be compatible. But that only works with single drives. And as impressive as Seagate is, we can't expect them to consistently double drive sizes every two years like they have been -cool as that may be.
So help me out without getting too technical. What's the best setup? Is it Drobo? Thecus? ReadyNAS? Seagate's BlackArmor? Or something else entirely?
All comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am currently using WD 2TB Thunderbolt hard drive for my iTunes, which i love and is works great.  i am connected directly to my Mac Book Pro. I am running low on Memory and thinking of buying a bigger Hard drive.  My question is should I buy 6TB thunderbolt HD or 6TB NAS drive to work solely for iTunes.  I have home sharing enabled for my Apple TV
I also have my time capsule connected just as back up only.

  • Outgrowing storage - best NAS/SAN options for OS X Server environment?

    Hi All,
We use an Xserve (2x3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) for our production/graphic design team.  I have a 1TB ADM dedicated to "live" jobs and another 1TB ADM for "archived" jobs.  (A third, smaller ADM houses OS X Server only...)
Both 1TB drives have a dedicated 1TB external drive for nightly backups and another for weekly backups (we use SuperDuper).  This very basic system has worked well for us, but our storage needs are increasing.  I'd like to double our current scheme -- just bump the "live" and "archived" environments up to 2TB.
I see a lot of NAS and SAN options.  Main concerns for me are:
    1) compatibilty with our current Mac OS X Server environment;
    2) cost; and
    3) ideally, preservation of our clean and simple backup scheme
Wanted to get input from other Xserve/OS X Server users as far as the best options for this transition...
    Thanks!

I am a huge fan of the Netgear (formerly ReadyNAS) NAS devices.  I've owned 2 of them now, and am now standardized on the little 4-bay NVX Pro.  It supports AFP perfectly as well as Time Machine, SMB/CIFS for any windows needs, iSCSI, NFS, RSYNC, etc. etc.  iSCSI is a great option not to be under-estimated, though NFS is the more traditional backup model for Network storage.  I backup several Apple machines to the single NAS, which is now running 4x3TB drives in the XRAID2 format (essentially RAID5).  I can pull a drive in live production and swap it out and the RAID re-syncs without interrupting file transfers, etc.  It's also got some nice plugin's of some open source tools like Subsonic server, Wordpress, etc. etc.  They make a myriad of devices with the same basic software, just different amount of drive bays, enterprise vs. SMB market, etc. etc.  Again, I chose the NVX Pro, but there are other options up and down the line-up.  And no, I have no officialiation with Netgear, in fact on a certain level, my company competes with them :-)  Lastly, remember, there is value in off-site backups as well, in case of fire, theft, etc. If you're really paranoid, like me, you could additionally mirror your NAS to an off-site NAS or other cloud-based solution.  Of course, there's a cost for everything.  Good luck with it.

Simple question:  I want to use iCloud as a back up disk for my documents folder.  How can I do this?  If I cannot do this, why am I paying for access to "the cloud?"

iCloud does not provide general file storage or backup, so you cannot back up your Documents folder using it. You will need to find a third-party alternative - this page examines some options (some are free):
    http://rfwilmut.net/missing3
iCloud at basic level, with 5GB is storage, is free: you only pay anything if you want to increase the storage space.

  • Is Creative Cloud storage a good solution if multiple people have to work on a file?

I am trying to use Creative Cloud storage so that, for instance, a colleague can open an inDesign file from their own workstation, make some simple text edits, and re-save it.
If everyone involved has desktop syncing, is this a workable way to use Creative Cloud Storage? Does syncing work so that the Could Storage would update my local version? Or would I have to download the latest version each time, then work on it, then re-sync?
If this isn't a good way to go about things, does anyone have a better suggestion?
    Thank you.

    Hi Callofthegame,
One could share a file with others, but each user would have their own copy for their account (which they could in turn share back to others if they wanted). So it wouldn't be a single instance of the file being edited by multiple individuals. Adobe Drive might be closer to what you are looking for - http://www.adobe.com/products/adobedrive.html?promoid=JIKTG
    Hope that helps,

  • Best storage solution for collaborative editing between two editors

    Hello!
I was wondering what would be a recommended hardware storage solution for collaboratively editing Final Cut Pro X Libraries. Our current process revolves us copying all the video footage onto a portable drive and copying it over to each others machine. This is a time consuming process and the process gets broken up if one of us isn't in the office. We are working only with 1080p (and less) footage and both machines are MacBook Pro's (both have Thunderbolt connections).
I've dug around the internet and found network solutions (setting up another machine as a server w/ the storage drive there) but that setup seems like a lot of work.
Is there another way to do it with a single shared drive, no additional computer setups that would allow us to edit videos concurrently? I'm not looking for a scalable solution, just something to allow us to edit from the same pool of  footage at the same time.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

If you want to edit concurrently, you are looking for a networked solution: either a drive on a server, like you mentioned, or a NAS (a drive connected directly to the network) or a SAN (storage area network, which is a more sophisticated, professional setup - that would likely be overkill in this case).
In any case, you need a fast network - at the very least gigabit ethernet. There exist NAS options for a decent price.
In this kind of setup, you would save all your media in the NAS, work on your libraries locally, and use "external media" - so the media would stay in the designated places in the NAS, and the libraries point to it. Libraries will be fairly small, and you could pass them around.
In any case, you would share the media concurrently, NOT the libraries.

HOW TO DELETE FILES or FOLDERS or Assets from Adobe Creative Cloud Brouser/Web Portal By: Kai Buskirk rev:130626
Adobe now burried deleting or trashing unwanted iteams files or folders in the Archive section of your creative cloud brouser/web portal.
Note!! - No longeer is there a standard TrashCan icon or simple Delete button... its burried in the archive sector: but why i ask?
An archive is an accumulation of historical records, or the physical place they are located.[1] Archives contain primary source documents that have accumulated over the course of an individual or organization's lifetime, and are kept to show the function of that person or organization. Professional archivists and historians generally understand archives to be records that have been naturally and necessarily generated as a product of regular legal, commercial, administrative or social activities.
In general, archives consist of records that have been selected for permanent or long-term preservation on grounds of their enduring cultural, historical, or evidentiary value. Archival records are normally unpublished and almost always unique, unlike books or magazines for which many identical copies exist. This means that archives (the places) are quite distinct from libraries with regard to their functions and organization, although archival collections can often be found within library buildings
A person who works in archives is called an archivist. The study and practice of organizing, preserving, and providing access to information and materials in archives is called archival science. The physical place of storage is sometimes referred to as an archive repository.
To delete files folders or individual assests in the current incarnation of adobe creative cloud brouser/web portal rev:130626
1 - Check mark the box on left and select files or folders you would like Deleted/Trashed and move them to the ARCHIVE folder location inside your adobe creative cloud brouser/web portal....Then navigate to the ARCHIVE SECTION
2 - Once the files or folders you have check marked are moved to the ARCHIVE folder location you can select them for Permanant Deletion (Trash)
ps: you can also restore them......if you so choose....
3 - in case you missed this step after selecting/checking the files or folders in the ARCHIVE folder there is a small Triangle Selector drop down that will reviel the Permanently Delete option.... clicking that is the point of no return i think..... so do not be misled my the use of the term ARCHIVE.... DELETING PERMANANTLY IS DELETING YO!
4 - OK DONE NOW YOU GOT IT .....
    Good Luck Happy House Cleaning.....
    Wamest Blessings,
