Options for Canon RAW files?

I have a PowerPC at the office running 10.5.8. I am a graphic designer & photographer. Previously I was able to use iPhoto with my older DSLR to import Canon RAW files. I've upgraded to a Canon 60D and iPhoto no longer reads these new Canon CR2 files. As you know, CS4 is the latest version of the creative suite I can use on this Mac, and Photoshop CS4 doesn't open these RAW files either.
I checked out Adobe DNG converter but it won't run on this system.
Are there any options or is it just time to upgrade to a new Mac?

I don't currently have the install disc with me, but I can try that later when I remember to bring it with me.
I went to the Canon site to download a driver and it either is not available for my OS, or says I don't need it.
I want to do all of the above (import from camera/SD Card, open, convert/modify) in a seamless workflow. I use Lightroom 4 at home which I love but only have access to iPhoto at work.
Thanks for the help!

  • Support for Canon raw files in panther and iPhoto

I can't get iPhoto 6 to import the raw files (.cr2) from my Canon 400D.
I can use image capture and also Elements 4 with Raw support, so I am not sure if its the operating system level (panther) or something else.
I did use iPhoto with my previous Canon with .CRW files and that worked fine to import them, organise them and then edit etc externally in Photoshop.
Is there any way out there to do this without upgrading the OS or iPhoto, I appreciate I have a way to continue working but miss the convenience of the easy import.

Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

  • How do I open .CR2 Canon Raw Files in PS Elements 8 for iMac

When I open a .CR2 Canon Raw File (Canon T3i camera) in PSE 8 for iMac, I get all greys - no color.  It is showing as color as a .CR2 on my desktop - when I bring it into PSE, it is grey.  I chose first 16 bit, then 8 bit.  Same result.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.  George

Thank you Barbara for pointing this out. Since I'm new to forum stuff so missed the catch here. Got exactly same information as you posted. Got to know that ACR 6.2 doesn't support T3i files. It's ACR 6.4 which supports them but is incompatible with PSE8 ( http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html ).
So the solution seems to be either upgrade to a newer version of Elements or download the free DNG Converter ( http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html ) and convert the raw files to DNG.
Thanks again for correcting me here

  • Can't open Canon RAW files in LR1.3, Photoshop, Bridge

    Hi.
I'm having a problem with some Canon RAW image files a second photographer sent me. He sent about 800 files and I'm only able to import into LR (1.3) about 15% of the files. The remainder will not import. Upon import, LR says something to this effect: "files appear to be unsupported or damaged." I tried them on both of my macs (my G5 and laptop) and had the same thing happened. Photoshop says: "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
They show with this icon: file:///Users/marthafitzsimon/Desktop/Picture%203.png
When I do the "get info" on these files, under "General:" it says, e.g., that a file is a 10.8MB file. Under the "More info:" box, it says the dimensions are 0x0 (that's weird because when I look at this for other good files there are numbers for the dimensions).
This is a picture of the "get info" window:
    file:///Users/marthafitzsimon/Desktop/Picture%201.png
I have tried to open these files in LR, Photoshop, Bridge and Preview and nothing will open these.
The files are locked so I unlocked one, but that made no difference whatsoever.
I noticed one thing about the naming convention on the files, but I don't think this matters. My own Canon RAW files always have the .CR2 extension. All of his files have the .cr2 extension. Mine are all uppercase and his are lowercase. However, I don't think this could matter because the files I was able to download of his all had the .cr2 extension, just like the ones I couldn't download.
(PS: Just in case you saw my earlier posting, this problem has nothing to do with that. This is another second photographer's files that I'm having problems with. Jonathon LeFaive solved that other problem for me.)
Thank you for any help you can provide! Martha

LR 3 is a complete new build so it will not overwrite the earlier version of LR 1.3 or its catalog or other settings.
The install procedure will recognize your LR 1.3 catalog and ask if you wish to create/ convert to a LR 3 catalog. This procedure will not overwrite your 1.3 catalog but will create a LR 3 compatable copy.
Download the trial which is good for 30 days before you will need to pay the upgrade price of $99 if you decide to keep. The trial is the full package and you will not be restricted in any way.
The new features are a substantial upgrade with significant improvement in the conversion output of your raw files.
Full details are provided in the "read me file" included with the download which should be read carefully before you install. The decision should be a no brainer.

What camera generated your Canon raw files.
A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,

  • When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

When i open my Canon RAW-files with preview or transfer them to another program using preview they change to color despite the fact that they where all shot in B/W... How to change this?

    I shoot only RAW - no JPEG-files except those visualizing the files on my memorycard or computer. I think i have to refine my question;
    1. I know there is possible to make B/W HDR-images.
    2. I know the best HDR images are based on RAW-files.
    3. When i transfer the images in question to a HDR software they change, so when i view them in the software (either Preview or the HDR software) they are suddenly viewed (and processed) in color.
    4. This never happend on my PC so i know it has to do  with either Finder or Preview.
    5. Do i have to make all my B/W HDR-images on the PC or is it a way for me to change how Finder/Preview show/alter my images?

  • Workflow for unsupported RAW files

Aperture doesn't recognize RAW images from my Leica D-Lux 2 so I will need to use ACR to convert the files. I'm wondering what other people have set up in terms of workflow for unsupported RAW files. I'm thinking I will have to open in PS, convert, save as TIFF, and then import into Aperture--keeping the original RAW files classified somewhere on my hard drive. Anyone have a better workflow idea?

I myself am in the same boat (unsupported RAW), what I've been doing is saving 16-bit TIFFS from my RAW editor and importing those into Aperture. I just batch convert first and load them in all at once.
When Linear PNG's are supported that is the option I will favor for import I think (until my camera's RAW format is supported, but I think linear RAW will come first).

  • Display a Canon raw file as shot in Aperture?

I believe a number of settings are saved along with the image in a Canon raw file, such as. White Balance, colour space, Saturation, Contrast, sharpness and picture style as well as a few more things. Is it possible for Apreture to display the image with these "as shot" settings? A previous piece of software I used to use on a PC called Breezebrowser displayed the image prior to import (conversion) with these as shot settings but allowed you to alter these if required. If this could be done then I would find it a good starting point before post production adjustments are made. Hope this makes sense.

The short answer is no you cannot - yet. The best way to accomplish this is to create a series of preset templates that you can lift from prototype images and stamp to your imported images as a set of baseline adjustments. If you like the way that the in-camera settings are rendered just shoot RAW+JPG for each of the settings and then match the RAW to the JPG for each different setting for your starting points.
I am not real familiar with Canon stuff but if the WB is rendered a little differently that is the biggest pain in Aperture because it is one of the only adjustments that are not relative, it's absolute - so unlike brightness, contrast etc. you can't bump it up a little or down a little with a preset you can only assign an absolute value.
Hope this was at all helpful.

  • Updated Camera list for converting Raw files in PSE7

I am looking to instal an updated CameraRaw.8bi file to accomodate recent cameras.
Camera updated needed for Canon powershot G15.
    Regards Daz.

Photoshop Elements 7 supports Adobe Camera Raw from version 4.5 to 5.6 only.
Please refer following document for you reference:
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Canon Powershot G15 starts supported from Adobe Camera Raw version 7.3.
Hereby, raw files from particular camera is not supported in Photoshop Elements 7.0.
However, you can use DNG converter to convert Raw files into DNG and import in CS4 aaplication.
The Digital Negative (DNG) format is Adobe’s proposed standard format for camera raw files. DNG files are useful for archiving camera raw images because they contain the raw camera sensor data and data specifying how the image should look. Camera raw image settings can be stored in DNG files instead of in sidecar XMP files or the camera raw database.
You can download the latest DNG convert from following place:

  • Camera Conector and Canon Raw files

    Hi
I have a Canon 30d, looking at buying a Ipod 30gig to use as a back up whilst shooting and filling a 1 gig cf card rather than keep buying cf cards...
Will the ipod accept the raw files? and will I be able to view the photos ie can an ipod read canon raw file format??
    thanks
    Steve

    Hi
Whether or you can transfer raw photos from a camera to the iPod via the camera connector I don't know. However, I do know that on the older iPods (the ones with the color screen which can't play video) you could transfer a movie (mpg) that you had shot on a digital camera. Although the iPod couldn't play the movie, you could see tell if the movie had transferred, and you could then transfer the movie from iPod to the computer with no problems. Thus, it may be possible to transfer raw photos from camera to iPod via the camera connector and then from iPod to computer. However, the iPod CANNOT display raw photos, so even if you can transfer them, you won't be able to see them.
    Hope this helps

  • Just upgraded to 10.8.4 and now can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7

i've just upgraded to os 10.8.4 and now i can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7 which worked perfectly prior to the upgrade....anyone else encountered this issue?

Adobe's software is a mess in terms of the fact that it's sprayed all over the place and may not survive an OS upgrade.  Try reinstalling Photoshop CS5.

  • For Eric Chan - is Adobe using legacy (or Sigma's) code to do NR for Foveon raw files ?

    Hi Eric,
is Adobe using legacy (or Sigma's) code to do NR for Foveon raw files ?
it was stated (I think it was either you or mr Schewe) that Adobe nowadays do not use NR behind the scenes when NR sliders are zeroed - however this is clearly not the case for Foveon raw files... hence the question - is it Adobe's legacy code that for whatever reason was not changed from old days or Adobe is using some SDK provided by Sigma ?
compare two screenshots - one is ACR, another is SilkyPix v5 Beta... we do not have any demosaicking for Foveon, so it is clear that ACR despite zeroed sliders does NR behind the scenes... can that be fixed and modern Adobe's NR made available for Foveon raw files, like Adobe has it for other cameras ?

    > Is it possible that this file has defaulted to the 2003 process version by accident?
    ACR shows "Process: 2010 (Current)"
I think that foveon related code was kind of neglected for quite some time... however if Sigma indeed will start selling SD1 that might cause some influx of new customers and it is time to dust off whatever is for foveon inside ACR/LR.

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

  • Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.
