Options for converting '.vob' files for editing in PP Pro CS3...

Hi,
I'm using PP Pro CS3 (Windows) and I have a few projects here where the source material are '.vob' files only.
Now because PP Pro doesn't support that file format, I'm looking for options to convert this footage to a format - suitable for editing in PP Pro CS3 - that does NOT explode in file size.
Converting to uncompressed .avi is up 20 times the file size, DV .avi is about 5-10 times the file size.
Here are the options I've tried so far:
1. importing '.vob' files straight into PP via the Avisynth method
--> works, but PP crashes randomly and it always crashes when rendering more than 2-3 min
--> all my system drivers are up to date
2. renaming to .mpg or .avi
--> works for some files (only) but you get random red frames in your footage
3. converting to mpeg-2 via...
a. Carbon Coder - best quality so far - looks like original
b. Premiere Elements 4 - no de-interlacing option, takes way too long, quality worse than original
c. MPEGStreamclip - no options selectable, quality is worse than original
4. converting to 'DV avi' via...
Carbon Coder - PE 4 - MPEGStreamclip - VirtualDubMod
--> file size explodes (5-10 times of the original .vob file), quality looks on all kinda the same and NOT better than the mpeg-2 output from Carbon Coder - that's why I don't wanna take the storage hit...
Are there any other methods or ways to convert '.vob' files to a suitable editing format (with a reasonable file size) ?
Thanx for your help !
Mike

Take the storage hit and be done with it. Hard drives are cheap these days. Editing takes lots of space. Might as well get used to it.

  • Convert .VOB file to edit in FCPX

Can anyone please suggest the best way to convert a .vob file to edit in Final Cut Pro X?  I read that Mpeg Streamclip was the business, but when I load the .vob file, it appears only as a sound file with no video.  The .vob is definately a video file.  I also get a message about Apple Quicktime Mpeg-2 playback component is not installed.  It says I have to buy this part, but I haven't read anything about needing this.  Maybe I do.
Besides "how", also what is the best format to convert to for editing in FCPX?
    Thanks!

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion and Mountain Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion and Mountain Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion or Mountain Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8 betaabove; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component M. Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion or Mountain Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion and Mountain Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion and Mountain Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
Thanks, I downloaded and installed the beta from Squared5.com.  However, when I run the Utility MPEG2 Component M.Lion, I get a dialog "Please double-click the file QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg to open the quicktime MPEG2 disk image".
How/where do I get the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg?  e.g., trusted site.  Do I need to purchase the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store?

  • Convert vob files for use in FCP X

I need to convert VOB files for use in FCP X on my macbookpro in OS X Lion (10.7.5) I use Clipwrap to convert other formats, but it does not seem to accept VOB for conversion (or if it does, I have not figured out how). In searching the web, I've come across several products that tout themselves as the best, fastest, easiest VOB to Prores converters etc., some that advertise as "free" when actually only a watermarked trial version is free. I have no idea of the actual quality of any of these (some examples are Brorsoft video converter for Mac, and Acrok HD Video Converter...), and would like some input from folks w/ experience in these things before dropping $ on the problem.
In another thread on this site I read something about MPEG Streamclip, & something about needing to separately download an MPG2 converter for it w/ Lion or Mountain Lion - the process sounded confusing and I couldn't tell if it applied to my situation or not...
Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed.

MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:

and when I next connect the external hard drive how will I easily get the newly downloaded media onto the external HD
you'd have to point +iTunes media folder location+ back to the external via preferences > advanced > iTunes media folder location, then file > library, organize library > consolidate files
and essentially, to have it easily readable on both machines?
in that case it might be best to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external. then, on each machine, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes can access the iTunes library @ a time !
also, make sure the external is mounted on either machine before launching iTunes.

  • An app that will convert VOB files into individual episodes?

    Hello,
So I have a DVD that I converted a bunch of TV shows onto using Visual Hub. The problem is I get 18 hours but it converts into VOB files.
Is there an application that will convert VOB files into MP4 format but make them into individual episodes?

    AndreTheGeek,
Thanks, I did try it but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Think what I want is impossible. I want to take a VOB file that has like 5 shows on it and want the output of that to be 5 individual mp4's so I can pick and choose what I want to go on my ipod.
I think you must have done it wrong.
For a start. forget about VOB files - there's no need to mess around with them if you use Handbrake. Simply put your DVD in the DVD drive of your Mac and tell Handbrake to use that DVD as the source - it will help you with the rest of the procedure.
You will find that Handbrake interprets the information on the DVD as individual episodes (top of the page, choose the "title" drop-down menu), giving you the running time of each one. Just choose a particular episode, give it an output file name and add it to the queue. Then select the next episode and give that a different file name. When you've finished, simply run the queue and it will convert them all into the individual files you've specified.
If you find an episode that appears to be longer than all the rest, this is usually the one that contains all the episodes for the 'play all episodes' feature on your DVD. Leave that one out of the queue.
It's not always obvious which episode is which (as they aren't always stored in the correct order on the DVD) so you can just give each file an arbitrary name for now, then watch the resulting mp4 files and name them appropriately at that stage.
There is also a guide to ripping TV Shows for your iPod on the Handbrake website (with pictures) if you find my description confusing.

  • Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and if there is how do you convert.

VOB files are video files.  Tiger is an operating system.  Converting video files to Tiger frankly doesn't make sense.  Can I convert a Beethoven symphony into a toothbrush?
What is your actual goal in this?  You can play VOB files with VLC, and there is still a Tiger version of that.  Converting to another format is harder since usually when you are working with VOB files you are doing higher end video editing.
If you goal is to convert commercial DVDs you have ripped, don't bother asking.  Discussing that is against the terms of use of this site since ripping commercial DVDs is illegal in the USA and some other countries.

  • Converting VOB Files For use in FCP

    Hello,
I have a large FCP project using VOB files shot on a DVD Recorder.
I have been been using a freeware called MPEG Streamclip to convert them into Quicktime Files for use with FCP7. The resulting QT files have all been very choppy when used in the FCP Timeline etc.
I have options with this freeware to convert to MPEG, TS or export to Quicktime, DV, AVI, MPEG4 or other formats.
Any suggestions on how to bring these VOB files into Final Cut Pro so that they work well.
    Thanks,
    Marc

Nick's tutorial is good. Read it.
I had been using Cinematize for this but would always have trouble with the aspect ratio.
With MPEG Streamclip I have no problems if I do it this way:
    Export to QuickTime
    Change Compression to: Apple DV/DVCPro-NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Frame Size: 720x480 (DV-NTSC)
    Sound: Uncompressed (the default)
    Make Movie
I do a preset of the above.
Now, when you take that resultant file into FCP:
In FCP make sure your sequence set-up is DV anamorphic (if footage is anamorphic/16:9). When you bring that file into FCP it will not be flagged as anamorphic. In the browser scroll over and check mark it as anamorphic. NOW drag into the timeline. Aspect ratio is good if you do it this way.

  • How can I convert a home movie on dvd(vob file) to edit on imovie?

I had home movies converted to a dvd- the files are vob. Now I want to edit the movies in imovie.
I am having a difficult time converting from vob straight to mov files.
I purchased Quick Time Pro thinking that could do it, but I haven't been able to.
Also, it just says QuickTime Player Version 7.6.4 (518.35) on my computer.
Is it supposed to say QuickTIme Pro?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

The "Pro" option just unlocks a lot of features in QuickTime Player. If you look at the registration info, it will show if you have Pro installed.
For converting DVD's you have two options; hardware or software.
The hardware option involves connecting a DVD player's analog outputs to a qualified "DV device" (DV camcorder, VTR or converter) then connecting the DV device's Firewire port to your Mac to capture the footage.
The software option involves using an application like DVDxDV or MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that works natively with your chosen NLE.

  • Comparing options for editing XDCAM in FCP?

Hello, I'm setting up an edit with 200+ hours of footage for a 90 minute project. It's shot mostly in XDCAM HD 60i. My goal is to get 2 or 3 editors through a multi-month edit while minimizing crashes as the assembly gets longer and the FCP projects get bigger... We expect to have a few other sources that come in as Apple Pro Res 422 or HDV. As far as delivery, we don't know of any reason why we'd have to deliver in XDCAM. We think it'll be graded in Pro Res 422.
Here's what I think I understand from poring over the forum... 3 project setups to choose from, The question is, if you can afford to do it, is C the preferred setup in terms of project stability for a long-haul edit?
(Setup A) The most basic route, editing natively in an XDCAM sequence, with render setting switched to Pro Res 422, has worked for some editors... but not if they start mixing codecs in their sequence...
(Setup B) Shane has suggested a few times to just edit in a Pro Res 422 Sequence. Shane, or others--could you clarify please, do you mean keep the XDCAM media but edit it in a sequence with Apple Pro Res 422 Preset? Also, what does it do better than the above? (Is it less crashy or does it let you mix formats?)
(Setup C) Several  editors here have suggested transcoding all the XDCAM camera footage to Apple Pro Res 422 and editing in that... If you can afford the storage space and the transcode time. Is that the clear winner?
If so, what's the best way to transcode in terms of video quality & workflow -- Media Manager, Compressor or any other software? Within compressor, is it better to choose "Apple Pro Res 422 for interlaced media" or just plain "Apple Pro Res 422"? (Again, shot in 60i) Would anyone recommend modifiying a Compressor setting for better results?
Also, this last one is just for curiousity... why is a clip in .MXF so close in size to the .mov that is produced when you import to FCP with XDCAM browser? My colleagues and I were thinking of .mxf files as "compressed" versions of the clips you'll edit with, but do they have the same  amount of compression, just one is in an .mov wrapper?
    Many Thanks to all!
    Jen

Yes, that is what I mean.  Make a 1920x1080 ProRes 422 sequence, and edit the XDCAM in that sequence. If you have other formats, convert them to ProRes 422 if you can, or if they are other native formats like DVCPRO HD or HDV, they will mix fine. AVCHD, H.264...those get converted to ProRes.
This is better than Option A when mixing footage types. So if you have ProRes, XDCAM, HDV, DVCPRO HD, DV...this is the way to do it.
Setup C...if you have the time and space....is a fine option too.  But Setup B has always worked fine for me and I see no benefit to transcoding, other than not having a render bar.
    >Also, this last one is just for curiousity... why is a clip in .MXF so close in size to the .mov that is produced when you import to FCP with XDCAM browser?
MXF and Quicktime are just "wrappers" that house the footage CODEC.  Like AVI is the Windows wrapper of choice.  MXF can be DVCPRO HD, XDCAM...a host of other formats.  What FCP does is take the MXF media, the codec, and just wraps it into Quicktime so FCP can read it better.  Just changing how it is housed, not the codec. So the sizes are exactly the same.

  • Load Options for Edit Sub Step

    Hi Ppl,
I have created a custom step type which has a edit sub step with LabVIEW adapter. When invoke the edit sub step for the first time, it takes a while to load the edit sub step and there is a noticebale delay for the first time. I want the edit sub step module to be loaded when TestStand is open or when the sequence file is open. I was not able to locate any location where we can specify the load and unload options of the edit sub step. Is there any way to do this ?
    Thanks,

This is probably because of the launching of LabVIEW development system.
Have you tried setting the Load option for the SequenceFile to 'Preload when opening sequence file'

  • Acrobat X Pro Ctrl E option for Edit Document Text tool

    Hi,
When I use the "Edit Document Text" tool (formerly TouchUp Text) in Adobe X Pro and press Ctrl E, it's saying "Properties No current selection".
However, pressing Ctrl E on other tools such as Comments, Link etc, the Properties toolbar is showing properly.  And when I switch back into using the  "Edit Document Text" tool, the Properties toolbar will show as grayed out.
I tried using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and it's doing the same thing.
Is the Ctrl E Properties toolbar is not really available for "Edit Document Text" tool?  Do I really have to right click on the area and choose Properties?

  • Imac 27inch is a better option for editing?

Hi! i am having intel based Imac 17 inch computer .I want to go for 27inch . Is that good for editing?
The imac 27inch has only one firewire 800 and i want to connect to my external hardrive and to my external monitor. So i need two firewire ports atleast. what should i do? help me please.

Monitors do not connect to Macs through Firewire ports. You use the Mini DisplayPort for that, along with a suitable adaptor like the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter or Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.
You can also daisy chain several Firewire devices on a single Firewire port, for instance to use several Firewire HD's or a HD & some other Firewire-connected device.
