Options for high speed internet connection. . .anyone tried Directv?

Just relocated to a black hole of communications. . . Sprint telephone provider does not provide high speed service in my area. Town about 10 miles away has wireless access but not good for me. . . have new intel 20" Imac and now using apple external modem. . .good connection with aol but slow and would like to do better. I have Directv which is persistently touting their internet service. Anyone have experience with that? What are my other options, if any?

I have had DirecWay (soon to be HughesNet) for a year. I have the Pro account ($69/mo) with 1000/200 kb/s D/U and a 350MB download bucket which refills at 56 kb/s. That is about 350 MB per 16 hour period. It has been reliable. Heavy snow will stop like with DirecTV, but with dish low enough to sweep the snow off corrects this. Speeds vary, but is always better than dial-up. We had 18.8 kb/s on a very good day with dial-up.
However! The latency is high, 700-900ms. This delay is annoying, it takes a few seconds before your page come up. "Twitch" games don't play well. Other than that it is great.
I kept waiting for DSL or anything but it never came. My only regret is that I should have gotten it sooner.

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • Wireless high speed internet connection

I would like to know if somewhere we can find a kind of PCS card for wireless high speed internet connection, but for power books and iBooks G4?
I'm living in mexico City and one company (iusacell) is offering the service but just with PCS cards for PCs, but no for macs.

Unfortunately, the 12" PowerBooks and both size iBooks lack the required PCMCIA slot for such cards, so they cannot be used at all.
The 15" and 17" PowerBooks do have a PCMCIA slot, but if your network doesn't supply Mac software or drivers, it probably can't be used.

  • Monthly charge for High speed internet vacation period (suspension)

I talked to two agents regarding with temporarily suspending my high speed internet service, and I just found out I was getting charged monthly $10 during the suspension periold, which the two agents never mentioned.
Why did I get the wrong information from the 2 agents even though I made sure with them couple of times I will not be charged during the suspension on the phone. Now I am disconnecting verizon internet service. And I will disconnect my verizon phone service with my wife next year when the contact is over.
One more thing, I can not file complaint anywhere about this issue in the verizon website, which I found out they made it impossible in their website. Other verizon users mentioned it in the forum. There is no such thing about filing complaint in their company. Good luck.
    Good bye verizon kingdom.

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.

  • What is the best way to connect my ipad to the high-speed Internet connection in a hotel room

what is the best way to connect my ipad to the high speed inernet connection in a hotel room

every connection is a bit different. Generally, connect to the wifi, then you may need to open Safari, and may even need to try to get to one of your bookmarked pages to trigger the 'agree to our terms' page to come up.
As to it kicking you off every so often, there are sometimes glitches with the wifi on iPads, you can also be subject to any programming the hotel has. Like I've noticed various places that only allow you to log on for a period of time before having to relogin.
most hotels have 1-800 numbers, so you can always try calling that to see if their tech support has any tips for the frequent disconnection issue.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • Installing Sprint Broadband High Speed Internet Connection

I am getting 11bps internet connection with my dial-up server, AOL.
Sprint has sent me the materials that are, for a huge price of $69 a month, supposed to give me broadband speed which I simply must have in order to attend online art classes which I am beginning next week.
Does it make any difference if I insert the disk before the laptop is turned on, or if I insert it while the laptop is already turned on?
I am totally scared to death to do this. I'm afraid something will go awry and I will screw things up. Any one here who has been through this? And knows the possible pitfalls? And can guide me through it?
I've read the printed instructions through 3 times and they are NO help. They are not clear or informative, so that I feel sure and secure of what to do and what to do next. I am floundering....and the clock is ticking! Help!
    Cyan

    Hi Cyan,
No worries either way on the disk, but no benefit of having it in first... you must still be a little bit stuck in the Windows® universe!
There'll be an installer once you open the CD, but it won't boot your Mac like some PC stuff does.
In fact, I think you/we can set it up without their CD even.
Seriously, don't worry yourself on this, it'll be easier than the documentation, and if that weren't enough, if I or others can't help you, I'll put out a Bat Signal for the best AOL helper in the whole world... Ali B., and help is but a parsec away.

  • How do I setup high speed internet on Sun Solaris 10?

    Hello,
I have comcast high speed internet. It doesn't work automatically. How can I setup my high speed internet connection to work with Sun Solaris 10?
    Mateusz

Pickup a broadband router, made by dlink, linksys, netgear, SMC or Cisco. If possible get a wireless with 4 port switch built in. This will give you added flexibility if you happen to get another system or a wireless laptop. You want a gateway router that does NAT, SPI firewall, DHCP.
Plug it into your cable modem then into your sun box, default settings on the router will generally self configure to the broadband you connect to and there will be no problems. However if you are using a DSL or bigpond they require a username and password to get the line active, this requires an initial login to the firewall to pick PPoE on the WAN side.
Different brands default to different 'non routeable' internal IP's, all are 192.168.x.x, smc defaults to 192.168.1.x or 192.168.2.x depending on release date, Linksys defaults to 192.168.2.x as does linksys, Netgear defaults to 192.168.1.x, the owners manual will usually tell you this.
They are generally made to default to a windows box so configuring a unix box has to be done either manually or with the dhcp option. www.dslreports.com has alot of good vendor specific information on configuring these things.
At any rate you need to create a file in /etc called 'defaultrouter' with the routers IP address, in the smc case it would be 192.168.2.1, pick a couple of outside DNS servers and put them in a file in /etc called resolv.conf in the format
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    copy nsswitch.dns nsswitch.conf
pick an address in the 192.168.2 range like .25 and add it in the /etc/hosts file, create a hostname.hme0 file with the host name thats in the hosts file and reboot.
Then try to ping the router, if no ping then the chang the 3td octet 1 instead of 2 and try again.
I've never tried doing the .dhcp thing but I've never used dhcp for a sun box before because all I do is servers.
I think I'd try the DHCP thing first then get to the router to get all it's information and write it down. Usually the ISP will populate the router with dns servers and any dns requests are answered by the router in the dhcp configuration. I think thats about it...

  • Upgrading to high speed internet enhanced with budget local phone service?

Searched for this issue but can't locate anything on here.  I have gotten conflicting information on this by phone and online chat.  When I click on "Order Now" for High Speed Internet Enhanced (29.99) it takes me to the bundle page where it wants me to add TV service and upgrade my phone.  All I want to do is upgrade to enhanced from the regular High Speed (19.99).
I don't know which dept I was connected to 1st on the phone, but her system wasn't allowing her to order it for me.  She referred me to E center who wasn't sure and asked the online chat people sitting near him who said I have to upgrade my phone as well to get enhanced?
Is this true?  I need to have a regional calling plan to upgrade to High Speed Internet Enhanced?  Instead of paying an extra 10 bucks a month, it jumps to an extra 25 to 30 per month.
Does anyone else have budget phone service with High Speed Enhanced?

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
        news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
        1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
        2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
        3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
        4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • Neighbors Have High Speed Internet but Systems Says Not Available

    Hello,
I have been trying for the past week to get High Speed Internet with Verizon.  Two times I received an email saying… Although your line qualified for High Speed Internet service during the initial phases of the order process, unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with Internet access on your line ending in 0602 .
I live in a small subdivision on the outskirts of Colonial Beach, Virginia with approximately 500 homes.
I have two neighbors, one on each side of me i one  would be the closest to the substation) and another neighbor about one block past my house.  The second neighbor drives past my house every day to get to their house.
I spoke with a local Verizon employee who told me the computer was turning down the High Speed Internet because of distance and that I needed to have someone at the local office, over-ride the automatic turn down so that it would be installed.  After the second computer automated turn down, I spoke with Eric – he said to give the next tech this information – Acct Number XXXXXX  Order Number XXXXX at the DSL Technical support so we could get this resolved.  The DSL Technical support guy was NOT interested in obtaining the account number or Order number Eric gave and said either the Router was filled or I was too far from the Loop.  I explained the neighbors and it still didnot seem to matter.  He was foreign and we did seem to have a significant language barrier.  He then transferred me back to Sales.
Over and over I requested to speak with the actual Local Office in Warsaw, VA so I could be given a reasonable explanation.   I spoke with a woman who said the two neighbors were closer to the loop than me.  When I asked how this was possible if I am in the center of the two she said maybe it was because of a curve in the road?  She also said she was the local office but was not able to tell me where that office was located so obviously it was not the actual "local" office.
How can I get someone to physically come out and determine why I cannot get High Speed Internet?  Who can I contact to make a formal complaint.
    Thank you for any input.

Here, maybe, is a FAQ that explains why

  • Is Practical to use ODBC over high speed intenet connections?

I am developing an application using Oracle 10g as back- end and Visual Basic / Access as front-end. ODBC works fine in intranets for this purpose, but I wonder if it will work over high speed internet connections to manage several offices from the headquarters.
Any information on the subject will be appreciated.
    Francisco

Connecting and using database connections over a WAN can be very slow. There are usually several network conversations for even the simplest SQL statements. An application that is used to querying the database each time it needs data can be brought to its knees when the latency goes up, regardless of how much bandwidth is available.
As long as the latency is less than 20ms, you probably won't notice too much. Once it goes over 50ms, you start to curse these database companies that don't use real streaming. At 100ms or more you start thinking that Citrix is the best invention in the world.

  • Connecting to High Speed Internet - I am not a Crook!

Ok, first of all, you're going to have to hear me out. I think technically what I'm trying to do is illegal, but in the real world I think its perfectly justified...
I have cable internet at home that I pay for and enjoy. My computer is the only computer in the house and thus the only one using the service. Right now I am house sitting with my girlfriend and have brought my computer with me, thus leaving my cable internet hookup behind at home unused. I'm connecting to the internet here with a dialup connection account that the owners of the house have and the slowness is driving me crazy.
I thought that if I brought my cable modem with me and hooked their cable into it I would be able to get access to the high speed internet - which I think I am justified in doing since I am paying for the service and it is going unused at home. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be working. The cable modem has a green light for "cable" but nothing for "data", and everytime I try to go to a website it either asks me to dial in to the dialup service or work offline.
At home I know that we have the same cable for our TV as we do for my internet because in my room where the computer normally is I have a small TV (for viewing with Premiere) that we also pay to have a cable connection into and the cable guy merely split the cable to go both into my computer and my TV.
Is there something they would normally have to switch on outside to make the cable work for the internet as well? I'm not interested in messing with that, I'm just wondering why its not working here.
    Darcy

Oddly enough, I was in paying for my cable and asked (in a roundabout way) about the possibilities of hooking up at another house and what was the deal about splitting the line and getting basic cable without paying for it.
The answers I got were basically...
When you sign up for cable modem, you are renting a port, that prot can go anywhere, it's not stealing if you only use it from one place and can only get detected if it's on in two places.
When you subscribe to cable modem, the basic cable is inherent in the signal. In my case (comcast), you can opt for a package that includes basic cable and the internet service for the same price as the internet port alone. They know people split the cable and hook it up to their TV, some installers go ahead and do that as a service. If the installer runs two cables into the house, it's simply split upline somewhere, it doesn't really accomplish anything.
It was almost like talking to the limo driver in the Wayne's World movie. Too much information...
