Options for NAS sharing in a large environment
The lack of Samba on Lion is a major problem for me at work and my employer. I work for a large university. We have one of the largest computer labs in the country, loaded with iMacs and MacPros. Without being able to mount cifs file shares on our NAS via Samba, Lion is a no go here. I am wondering what other people in a similar situation are considering in order to retain the disk sharing functionality thatSamba offered with Lion.
Your question concerns the underlying performance of messaging providers in general, not the JMS API. It is akin to using JDBC to connect to Oracle.
Messaging in general has been proven in large environments for many years, and most providers claim to be the best.
The following have some decent comparisons:

Configure DHCP Server options for Internet Sharing?
Good morning, all.
I have a Sprint (Sierra 595U) AirCard internet connection, which I'm sharing over my AirPort (using OS X's built-in Internet Sharing) to several Windows clients in my office. I see that when Sharing is enabled, en1 takes on the address 10.0.2.1 by default, as well as the role of default gateway/router and DHCP server for the Windows clients.
My question is: Can I configure the IP addresses and DHCP options for Internet Sharing to another address/mask scheme?
Just like I changed my home wireless network away from the default 192.168.1.0/24 for security reasons, I'd like to do the same here.
Thanks and Regards,
BrooklynWalkerSome paranoia is good.
Yes, of course security paranoia can be cultured. like yogurt
I googled.
This might help:
http://www.aleph0.com/computing/macosx/dhcp-setup/
but from what I just read, changing away from the default net & mask might be putzy. Some other discussions for you:

or you might see something here that helps.
Sorry not to be more specific. Hard to tell if you already googled for yourself.
I'll let someone smarter than I am take a look for you, here. -
Additional payment options for Family Sharing I wish....
I was not aware that each purchase would be billed to my credit card regardless of my iTunes balance. I knew I would be paying for all purchases, but not being able to use my account balance to pay it is extremely annoying. Prior to Family Sharing being available all their devices were under my id. So any gift cards they received were redeemed under my account. Now I have their money and can't use it to buy their things.
My mistake for not following every link on the Family Sharing info page, but I read that I would be charged for purchases. I thought it would be the same way as any purchase I made (balance, then credit card).....
I wish:
There should be an option for:
1) those who have a credit card be able to use it if they aren't on the "ask to buy" restriction. This includes both adults and other teens.
2) as the Organizer--give me a choice on how I want to pay for the purchases. If i want to use my own balance, I should be allowed to.
3) if this is how it's going to stay, then I should have the option as the organizer to transfer my balance to individual family sharing members as I see fit. Or allow me to 'gift' them the balance. Right now you can't use iTunes balance to buy a 'gift'.tminutes wrote:
I understand that now...but the their gift cards had been redeemed to my account prior to having family sharing. So basically, for now, I will have to decline any of their requests and then purchase them through my own. They can then download them on their device. I just wish there were alternatives...Thank you.
Tminutes,
Based on posts in this Forum, other Family Organizers have found themselves in that same dilemma. If you would like to make the "additional payment options" suggestion directly to Apple, you can do so at the iTunes Feedback page:

Does iCloud have any options for video sharing?
I found the MobileMe gallery for videos and pictures really useful. I am trying to find an alternative for video sharing that will allow me to upload files up to 2 GB so I can send a link and people can view the video streaming without having to download it.
All I could find is Vimeo Plus. Anything else out there I should consider. Does Apple offer an alternative to what we had on MobileMe?No.
Photostream is for photos only as the name says, and even this has no gallery or sharing features. Videos are not supported at all . The content in your camera roll is backed up, including videos, but that's only for restoring the device to the last known state if necessary. -
Outgrowing storage - best NAS/SAN options for OS X Server environment?
Hi All,
We use an Xserve (2x3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) for our production/graphic design team. I have a 1TB ADM dedicated to "live" jobs and another 1TB ADM for "archived" jobs. (A third, smaller ADM houses OS X Server only...)
Both 1TB drives have a dedicated 1TB external drive for nightly backups and another for weekly backups (we use SuperDuper). This very basic system has worked well for us, but our storage needs are increasing. I'd like to double our current scheme -- just bump the "live" and "archived" environments up to 2TB.
I see a lot of NAS and SAN options. Main concerns for me are:
1) compatibilty with our current Mac OS X Server environment;
2) cost; and
3) ideally, preservation of our clean and simple backup scheme
Wanted to get input from other Xserve/OS X Server users as far as the best options for this transition...
Thanks!I am a huge fan of the Netgear (formerly ReadyNAS) NAS devices. I've owned 2 of them now, and am now standardized on the little 4-bay NVX Pro. It supports AFP perfectly as well as Time Machine, SMB/CIFS for any windows needs, iSCSI, NFS, RSYNC, etc. etc. iSCSI is a great option not to be under-estimated, though NFS is the more traditional backup model for Network storage. I backup several Apple machines to the single NAS, which is now running 4x3TB drives in the XRAID2 format (essentially RAID5). I can pull a drive in live production and swap it out and the RAID re-syncs without interrupting file transfers, etc. It's also got some nice plugin's of some open source tools like Subsonic server, Wordpress, etc. etc. They make a myriad of devices with the same basic software, just different amount of drive bays, enterprise vs. SMB market, etc. etc. Again, I chose the NVX Pro, but there are other options up and down the line-up. And no, I have no officialiation with Netgear, in fact on a certain level, my company competes with them :-) Lastly, remember, there is value in off-site backups as well, in case of fire, theft, etc. If you're really paranoid, like me, you could additionally mirror your NAS to an off-site NAS or other cloud-based solution. Of course, there's a cost for everything. Good luck with it.

In Aperture album about 16 photos would show on screen and double clicking on one would enlarge it for adjustments. Now one larger image shows with about 7 photos at bottom. Options for controlling this no longer appear at top right. How do I correct this?
Do you mean the "View" controls are missing in your Toolbar?
To add these controls back to the Toolbar, use the View menu and select "Customize Toolbar". Drag the View Controls back to the Toolbar. -

Different options for shared computers (screen sharing)

Why do I get two different login options on my network? For one computer I can check on screen sharing, but I don't get that option for the third computer.
Am I missing a point here?
What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated
I have leo on my laptop and can screen share with the swivel on tiger, but not with the iMac G5 on tiger...Hi Catherine.
The question is. Are both computers running Leopard? Screen sharing only works between Leopard computers. It doesn't work between Leopard and Tiger unless you install a third party VNC program like Chicken of the VNC or similar.
I have three computers at home. Two with Leopard and one with Tiger. I can share my screen between the Leopard ones but not with the Tiger one.
Does this answer your question?

IPad "more" option for selecting Home Sharing no where to be found
All settings for Home Sharing checked. All devices using same Apple ID.
iPad does not offer a "Library" selection.
Also, iTunes window does not have a "more" button or a sidebar with library options.
Also, Apples help page re: iPad set-up shows different picture of iTunes front page to the one I get.
Any suggestions? The more button is in the Music App the bottom of the screen.
Go to View>Show Sidebar in the iTunes 11 menu - at the top of screen in order to see the sidebar. Once you can see the sidebar, you will see the iPad under the devices heading. Then click on your iPad under devices and you will see all of the tabs in the iTunes window - on the right at the top of the window - that you are familiar with. -
I am trying to set up internet sharing from my macbook air but there does not seem to be an option for this because the air is connected to the internet via wifi connection. Is it possible to still share this?
It depends upon how the other machines are connecting to your MBA:
If the the other machines are also using wi-fi, they can connect directly to the wireless access point (router) without going through your MBA
If the other machines are connecting to the MBA using ethernet you can share your wi-fi connection to them -
The new iTunes update gives me no option for a "share" tab on the side bar for me to play home shared music. why? please help i need to listen to beyonce!! plzzz
"share tab on the side bar ..."
iTunes has not had a sidebar for over a year. You can see one (as iTunes 10 used to show) by doing View > Show Sidebar from iTunes' menu.
But I'm not sure if that is your issue. You do not need a sidebar to do home sharing. Are you running the current iTunes (11.1.3)? Have you turned on sharing in Preferences? Have you done File > Turn on Home Sharing? -
Best video format for converting DVD to NAS for widely sharing
Summary: The article shows you with an easy workaround for
copying DVD to NAS for streaming by ripping DVD to NAS friendly video
format on Mac and Windows
I recently purchased a NAS to store all my music/photos etc on. I
can stream stuff to my iPhone/iPad using the NAS software. What I want
to do is rip all my DVDs (over 400) to my NAS, but I’m not sure which
format to do it in, to play nice with my Apple TV2, Xbox 360, iPhone,
iPad etc. I wanna get some advice as to what format to rip in and what
software to use?
Learn some tips from online, I got know that to copy dozens of DVD movies to NAS,
you need to get the content off the DVD disc as a protection-free and
easily readable element for NAS. In this case, at the first place
powerful third-party software for backup DVD to NAS is what you need.
There are many, many DVD ripping tools on the market. I’ve tired a pile of them.
Brorsoft DVD Ripper
is the best one I’ve tried yet. It is capable of ripping DVD to MP4,
AVI, MKV for NAS streaming with no quality loss; it also enables you to
copy DVD main movies for backup onto NAS in .vob format. And what I’ve
learned is that MP4 would be one best target format for it is fully
compatible with nearly all media devices including iPad, iPhone, PS3,
Apple TV, etc. If you are running on Mac OS X, turn to DVD Ripper for Mac. If you haven’t got the software, download it now and let’s start the conversion.
Ripping and copying DVDs to NAS
1. Launch the DVD ripping program for NAS devices . Then
click "Load DVD" to import the DVD files you want to convert. To select
the subtitles you like, simply click Subtitle and select the one you
prefer. P.S. Before start the conversion, you can choose to backup DVD mian movies.
2. Click Format bar and choose your desired format. To store
hundreds of DVD's on NAS, you can rip DVD to .mp4, or .avi, .mkv, etc
compressed format. And click Settings bar, you can adjust the level of
compression to suit the quality you want.
Tip: If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the
video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind
the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution
which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible
quality loss, and vice versa.
3. Press the "Convert" button to start ripping DVD for NAS streaming.
After the conversion, click Open button to find the output files.
Make sure the wireless network connection is accessible among the NAS
and Apple TV, PS3, HD TV or other media players. Then just enjoy the
high quality DVD movies anywhere anytime.
movies-videos-convert-tips.overblog.com/2014/02/ripping-dvds-to-nas-how-to-copy-dvd-to-nas-for-streaming.html
I've always found encoding with Handbrake and choosing the Apple TV2 preset is an excellent place to start and video encoded using that preset will work on my iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 2.
If the files encoded using that preset are too big for one's taste they can always encoded at a lower average bit rate rather than using the default 'Constant Quality' of 20.
Later on I'm sure the Handbrake group will have an AppleTV '3' preset supporting the 1080p format supported by the ATV3 and iPad '3' but using such a preset would not create a file usable on the iPad 2 or the iPhones. -
Oracle White Paper- Storage Option for RAC. on Linux
hi..
This in reference with White Paper.. Stotage Option for RAC on LINUX. Author- Umadevi Byrappa.
Which states on page 10: To Use NAS for RAC database file storage select the file system storage option in OUI. or the Clustered file system storage option in DBCA.
With which i disagree. File storage option of oracle 10g RAC only shows.
1. Clustered File system.
2. ASM
3. Raw Devices.
When i try to select Cfs and select the shared directory on NFS it says. < Directory_Name> is not a clustered file system or Shared on Both <Server_1> < Server_2>. and at this point of time i m stuck.
1. I dont want to use OCFS as its not supporting NAS.
2. Selecting CFS doesnt recognise mounted shared volume as valid storage device option can only store OCRfile and CSS file.
3. So, I have to use ASM.. with zero padded files..which i dont want to because no other option. ( PART NO. B10766-02 PAGE C-6)
Also, I would like oracle to provide Back up Recovery Option or Document which tells me how could i Recover Database when i use Zero Padded Files.
What would be the best Option in the above scenario ?
I hope by applying patch or with workaround somehow it shows Filesystem ONLY.I'll be the happiest man in this Case.
Any suggestions and corrections are most welcome. I wish i m wrong.
Nadeem ( )NFS isn't a clustered file system at all - by RFC it is an exported file system with access controls
If your vendor offers an NFS solution over and beyond that - more power to them. However that isn't "NFS"..
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3010.html
You can use NFS in a clustered server environment (to mount apps, read only data and for synchronous access to files), however it doesn't support the concurrency out of the box for RDBMS transactions - if a vendor is supporting this promise then that is for you to decide.
However i stand by my statement that NFS is a file system exported across your network and not a full clustered file system. -
BODS : Datastore options for SAP R/3 - need clarity for use
Hi All.
Another request to understand the datastore optiono n BOXI 3.1 BODS existing installation.
We are trying to pull a new table from SAP R/3 into BODS and we find that ABAP program is not getting generated as expected. And terminates. When we tested a simple workflow.
While creating a new datastore for SAP R/3 Source :
When we look at the datastore we find the following options for R3 Source ;
ABAP Execution option :
Execute preloaded
Generate and execute
Under data transfer method we find ;
Shared directory
Direct download
FTP
Custom transfer
Then we have working directory on sap server
local directory
generated ABAP Directory
Am testing a simple workflow of pulling data from SAP R/3 in a dev machine.
But am not understanding.
which option of ABAP Execution, and data transfer , path would work in co-ordination.
Because when i say direct download and say generate and execute it throws error.
Can anyone help me with combinations of the options to choose for a R/3 source. And the implications thereof.
I had created a folder under local bods server D:\Bodi. And given the path for data transfer.
But the files are not getting generated for whatsoever reasons.
Any advise on this would be helpful.
Also found a bit unusual, that there was no button to test the connection to be correct or not, a TEST connection button is not there. Which i felt, could be included.
Note : on the existing production system, we have chosen execute preloaded; shared directory on sap server. and shared that folder path for the user and given full rights. But while we try to do the same on the dev machine a test before transporting on production, a simple workflow does not work.
would like to know what settings on sap server, really affect the data store options on the BODS
thanks

Edited by: Indumathy Narayanan on Jul 19, 2011 4:14 PMIndeed, BODS <> SAP connectivity can be tricky.
For a development environment, I suggest you select the option "Generate and execute" for your "ABAP Execution Option." What this means is that DS will create, on the fly, small-ish ABAP programs. These ABAP programs will be written, in plain text, to a local directory on the DS job server, in the folder specified in "Generated ABAP Directory". You can see them in there after an attempted job execution, assuming the job involves the creation of an ABAP program. The ABAP program name is specified in the properties of an ABAP data flow, under Options > ABAP Program Name. If you can't, perhaps the DS job server process doesn't have full rights to that folder - ? After being generated on-the-fly, they'll be transferred to SAP to execute. The SAP user you use to connect to SAP must have sufficient rights to upload-and-execute these ABAP programs, and that's a fairly substantial set of rights. What's required is documented in the BODS supplement for SAP. Often, to get things running, your friendly local Basis admin will grant SAP_ALL to the DS user, to see what rights are being invoked.
Once all that jazz is working, you need to get the data back. There are a number of ways to do this. The method of data transfer is specified in "Data transfer method," where, ignoring "Custom transfer," you have three choices:
1) Direct Download: easiest and slowest. This method tells SAP to attempt to stick data in the client-side folder specified in "Local directory." Try this first.
2) Shared folder: This is recommended when you have SAP being hosted on a Windows box. Basically: you set "Working directory on SAP Server" and "Data Services path to the shared directory" to point to the same folder. SAP uses the "Working directory on SAP Server" to find this folder, and DS uses the other setting. So, for instance, if you were going to use the Shared folder method, you could set "Working directory on SAP Server" to "E:\BODS_Transfer", and, assuming E:\BODS_Transfer was shared-out as "BODS_Transfer", you could set "Data Services path to the shared directory" to
dev12.somecompany.com\BODS_Transfer . Then, you'd need to setup all the relevant security, as both SAP and DS need rights to read and write files in this folder.
3) FTP (this is the method I usually use): SAP writes the "transport files" you're after (i.e., the data) in the folder specified in "Working directory on SAP Server". Then, you need to establish ftp connectivity to that folder from the DS job server's perspective, which you do by entering the ftp host name and the path to that folder in "FTP host name" and "FTP relative path to the SAP working directory". In my opinion, the "relative" business is a little confusing, and I just typically enter the full ftp path, beginning the path w/ a forward slash, like "/usr/sap/tmp/BOBJ" or something like that. You also need to obtain a separate username and password for the ftp connectivity. Note that this name and password has NOTHING to do with the SAP username and password; you're just setting-up DS to act as an ftp client. I strongly encourage you to test ftp connectivity by using a regular ftp client from the DS job server and attempt to connect to your ftp host using the username and password you were given, and attempting to fetch some sample test file. If you can't do this, manually, then DS won't be able to do it, either.
Best wishes,
