Options for PS3 connection beyond wireless range

I'm technically challenged, so bear with me..
The coax from the Verizon box splits in my attic - 1 line goes to my m1424wr wireless router and the other goes across the house to my FIOS DVR. My PS3 is sitting right next to the DVR but it's too far from the wireless router to get a solid signal.
My questions is this -  can I split the coax running to the DVR so that I can use it as the internet connection for both the DVR and the PS3? (wired or another router) Or do I have to use the internet connection at the current router? (wireless repeater, powerline adapter, run a cat5, etc..)
Thanks!

Powerline reduces in speed the farther you are away from it, but generally unless your wiring is very old or you've got very noisy electrical the Powerline adapters typically work pretty well.
The two MoCa adapters mentioned will work fine. Verizon's own adapter is in fact from ActionTec. Even if the diagram shows it going from the Verizon router to the bridge, as long as the Verizon router is connected to the same Coaxial network as the Bridge and DVR are connected to (which is most likely the case, along with the ONT for MoCa WAN connectivity), the MoCa bridge will work. MoCa is after all how the Set Top Box gets it's guide and gadget data, and runs VOD. Rule of thumb is, same Coaxial network as set top boxes, it should work without an issue as long as you haven't gone over MoCa's device limit of 16 coaxial devices I believe per MoCa Network.
So yes. Use a 5-1000Mhz (1Ghz) bi-directional (!) splitter with two legs and ideally low attenuation for splitting the feed going to your Set Top Box. Put the STB on one leg, MoCa brige on the other, and watch it work. As a note, Verizon gives out splitters from PDI but other brands granted you meet the criteria above should work fine with FiOS. As long as your MoCA speed stays above 200Mbps and TV is not pixelating you're golden.

  • ACE - TCP Options for Proxy-Connections

    Hi all,
I have the issue that my ACE does not seem to allow tcp options with L7 proxied connections to the servers. For the client side connection I see the TCP option timestamp for example, but unfortunately the ACE itself does not put the timestamp option into its own TCP connection to the rserver. A 'parameter-map type connection' does only seem to have an effect on L4 connections, not proxied ones. Does anybody know a way how to tell the ACE to have e.g. a timestamp option in the TCP connection to the server as part of a L7 loadbalancing?
    Any help is highly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Daniel,
we do not support timestamp at L7.
I think we only support window scaling.

  • Disk monitoring options for firewire connected hard drives

I recently connected a 750 gig Western Digital hard drive to my Mac via Firewire. I just learned that Disk Utility's S.M.A.R.T. capability will not monitor hard drives connected via Firewire or USB.
Does anyone have suggestions on 3rd party applications that might give me some piece of mind that the disk is in good health?
    Thank you!

    Hi David,
most (if not all) FireWire and/or USB connected external HDs don't report any kind of S.M.A.R.T. status. Even if they do, OSX has not implemented them.
    See here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring%2CAnalysis%2C_and_ReportingTechnology
Even the third-party tools like SmartReporter or smartmontools can't get informations from FW/USB-HDs.
Only eSATA connected external HDs are supported.
    Sorry

  • Wireless Range Expader for WAG354G (EU)?

How can the wireless range of my WAG354G wireless home gateway be expanded? It seems not to be compatible with wireless WRE54G.

I don't think so that WAG54G should have any issue with WRE54G .....
For better connectivity on wireless network .....
Change the channel on router from 6 to 9 or 11
    Under advance wireless settings .....
    Becon interval sholud be 75
RTS & fragmentation threshold should be 2306

  • Need a slow download option for Satellite Internet Connections

Adobe Acrobat X fails to download completely when using Satellite internet connections.  The executable downloads but the 51Mbytes of software only gets part way through before failing as it is requires cable/ADSL speeds.
Please, those of us in the country who are remote, rely on satellite internet to reduce travel costs.  It would be nice if adobe would provide a download option for slow connections.

  • Sony LED TV w/Internet Features plus PS3, setup question (wireless vs. hardwire)

I connected a CAT6 cable from my Verizon router to the back of my TV for movie streaming etc, and was really amazed at how fast and consistent the hardwire connection was. I currently have my PS3 connected via wireless and although it does work, it's a bit slower and less reliable. My question is, can I use the same CAT6 Ethernet cable and split it at the end one side to the TV and one side to the PS3 so I can enjoy a more reliable connection when media streaming, etc.? I know I can get a second Ethernet cable but was wondering if it could be done with only one just so I don't have to worry about rewiring, etc.
One of my main goals is to achieve a faster connection on the PS3 so streaming sites give me a better quality picture. I played the same movie from Netflix via PS3 and Sony TV and the hardwire connection did give me better picture quality.
    Thanks so much in advanced.

Buy a 4 port switch and place it at your tv and plug the existing cat six into the switch. Depending on the switch you purchase, you can have as many ports as you wish. I have a 16port 10/100 and a 5 port gigabit switch connected to my router.
    2 choices.
    1. A second cable from the Verizon router
    2. Install an Ethernet switch at your TV.

  • Airport Extreme - best wireless option for connecting a Windows XP PC?

First post on this board - forgive the long-windedness.
Relatively new to MAC, not to UNIX / IT in general and, sadly, Windows.
As well as the MAC mini, my wife has a black MACBook, running Tiger and Parallels. We have acquired an Airport Extreme to replace the old 802.11b WAP. This works well with the MACBook, but I have had a few problems finding a suitable wireless client / adapter for the younger son's Windows XP PC, an HP Pavilion with USB2.0 ports. I started with a Linksys WUSB54G, with the latest drivers downloaded from Linksys. This worked well for a couple of weeks, using Windows Zero Config, after which it dropped out and refused to reconnect to any network, even the unsecure old 802.11b WAP.
The replacement began well, but then required reinstall of the drivers after every reboot of the PC, which allowed it to work. Eventually, this remedy failed; although other networks remained visible, the Airport one did not.
I will be taking the second one back! But I need an alternative.
Is there an issue with Linksys / Airport connections in general?
A colleague has suggested that an internal PCI card might be a better option than an USB based adapter, but he has no MAC experience.
Can anyone recommend a suitable card or an alternative USB solution?

    Generally no.

Yes generally they are better choice, another option would be an ethernet wireless bridge such as the WET54G which would require NO installation of software or drivers on the PC - it can be configured via a web browser.

Which one can I use properly to monitor all the wireless Devices in my hous

Actually, none of the options will do what you are looking for it to do. That is because, this application only monitors the traffic from the device it is hosted on. That would also mean that you would have to run a copy on each computer that will access the Internet on your network; note their individual usages, and then, combine them to get an idea of the total usage.
However, if you are only interested in the amount of Wi-Fi traffic that only your computer is seeing, then the "AirPort Network Card" option would be the correct choice.

  • Given wireless range of Time Capsule is 150', will this work? Put DSL modem on phone line in garage, connect ethernet to small office bldg (125') and connect separate ethernet to main house (200'). Time capsule on each end (or Airport Express)? Thx

Given Time Capsule wireless range is 150', will this solution work? In detached garage, connect DSL modem to phone line, then connect ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 125' to small office bldg. Connect separate ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 200' to main house. Put time capsule or Airport Express in each bldg resulting in separate wireless networks in each? Thanks.

This will work very well. You can run a CAT5e (or CAT6) Ethernet cable up to 330 feet...or 100 meters...with virtually no signal loss.
CAT6 costs a bit more, but will handle next generation Ethernet speeds, so if you have a choice, suggest that you opt for CAT6 cabling.

  • Can I run a cat5 cable to a 4 port hub from a cisco router then connect one of the hub's output ports to an airport express to 'extend' my wireless range?

Can I run a cat5 cable to a 4 port hub from a cisco router then connect one of the hub's output ports to an airport express to 'extend' my wireless range?
    Flow would be
Cable modem---->cisco e2000 wifi router (This is broadcasting wifi but not strong enough)---->4 port hub ---->airport express (to extend the wifi in another part of house)
    thanks!

Yes, you can do this as you stated. In essence you will want to configure both routers for roaming network. Please check out the following Apple Support article that describes this type of network. Although this article uses two or more AirPorts, it can be done with just about any manufacturer's router.

Wi-Fi or another interference source. Try turning off the Wi-Fi and see if the problems continue. If that solves the problem, see if you can set your Wi-Fi to run in the 5 GHz range.

It depends upon how the other machines are connecting to your MBA:
If the the other machines are also using wi-fi, they can connect directly to the wireless access point (router) without going through your MBA
If the other machines are connecting to the MBA using ethernet you can share your wi-fi connection to them

  • Can I move EA6500 router out of basement to 2nd floor of my house for better wireless range?

I am having issue with EA6500 wireless range from one end of house to other.  Currently, the EA6500 router is in the basement connected to my SB6141 cable modem.
Would it be possible to move EA6500 out of basement and to the 2nd floor of my home while keeping modem in the basement.
I was wondering if I could purchase a switch to place between cable modem and router which would allow me to place the router in closer proximity to my wireless devices.
I've already tried changing wireless channels and using inSSID but that has not resolved my problem.
    Please let me know.  Thanks.

It is possible to change the EA6500 router’s location from the basement to the 2nd floor. You need to have a long cable but it should not be 100 meters long since it will cause the connection to drop. It is also advisable to have a wireless AC adapter on our wireless devices/computers to optimize the wireless features of the EA6500 router.
For your Connected Home, you may use the 2.4 GHz network to connect your wireless devices to surf the Internet and email, share files and print.  The 5 GHz network is best for heavy applications including Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, online gaming, and streaming high-definition videos.

  • No WPA2 encryption option for Intel 2200BG wireless on T42 w XP SP3

Hi, trying to upgrade my wireless network to WPA2 so i can use the higher 802.11n speeds for my new T500 so I want to upgrade my T42 now on WPA to WPA2. (Yes I realize my T42 needs to be turned off from the wireless network before I can get the higher speed for my T500 but I still want to have both machines set up for WPA2 so I don't need to change any options in Acess Connections before using the T500 on wireless.)
On my T42 I have upgraded to the latest Intel PRO/Wireless driver 12.01.1000 dated Jan 5 2009. I have latest Access Connection 5.12. When trying to install Microsoft patch KB893357 it responds that it is no longer needed on latest release (I am on XP SP3.)
Setting my DIR-655 Dlink router to WPA2 only I can access it with my T500  with encryption set in Access Connection to WPA and AES. I can't access the network from my T42 with these settings. (Dropping the router down to WPA and setting encryption on the T42 to WPA and TKIP works.)
What can I do to achieve WPA2 encryption on my T42?

Googling on WPA2 and SP3 there seems to be quite a few people who lost their WPA2 ability as they installed SP3 on XP. Did anybody here find a solution for their WPA2 SP3 problems?
