Options for running older software on Mavericks

When I try to upgrade, it lists a bunch of software that won't run on Mavericks - does Mavericks have some type of "classic" mode that will enable me to run these programs?

Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.

4. Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753). This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

NOTE: Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization

There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
   1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows
         XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. For Boot Camp
         4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
         instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
         installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
         installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the
         computer into OS X or Windows.
     2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
         Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software
         virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
         with OS X.
     3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
         or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that
         enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
     4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
         applications without having to install Windows. The
         Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
     5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
         as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
         It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
         Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Running Older Software

I work for an elementary school and some of the teachers are getting new MacBook Pros with Mountain Lion on them. However, some of the programs they used to use with Snow Leopard are too old to be run on Mountain Lion. Is there a way to fix this and make Mountain Lion run older programs?

My computer was deemed capable of running a "modern" operating system, so I upgraded. Now, most of the older CAD/CAE applications I need to use on an almost-daily refuse to be installed. How do I run this software on my new, modern operating
system? Using the XP VM is not a workable solution...

We need a ton more information on the CAD/CAE apps before we can even venture a guess. Are they 16 bit? What was your old OS, what version of win 7 is you new os, ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC....

I often say there are three ways Flash is used on the Internet:
Showing advertisements (I assume you don't want to get those working again)
Video games
Showing video
(did I miss anything?)
What are you trying to do?
EDIT: Also, I think there have been many threads on this topic. The general solution was to use 32 bit Flash in 64 bit Arch. As for me, I just stopped using Flash.

Options for running Windows Apps

Here goes - I'm a pc user. Developer to be specific, so I need to be able to run SQL Server 2005/2000 Visual Studio 2003/2005, and other Windows related apps to support my job. However, I'm interested in purchasing an Apple to support my hobbies (photography, etc). They're elegant in design/architecture, etc.
I was really excited about the new MacBook Pro on an Intel platform - with dreams of "dual booting" Windows. Unfortunately, it does not appear that Windows (currently) supports the BIOS of the MacBook Pro - and I'm not interested in "hacking" a solution out. I need this thing to run, and run well.
I've also heard about the VM and have used VM to support development work. However, I've found it to be clunky at best - and would rather pursue alternatives.
So, ultimately my questions are - am I ultimately restricted to having multiple machines if I want a MacBook Pro? Is there any reality to the claim that Vista will be able to support the BIOS standard used by Apple? Should I just forget about it - and purchase another antiquated pc.

It is possible that Microsoft will release a Virtual PC for Intel Mac, but that may be some time in the future.
Currently you can obtain a boot loader that will instal Win XP on an Intel Mac. It is fairly straightforward but assumes that you are not a new computer user.
Please be advised: This solution is not supported by Apple. Apple is not preventing people from instaling Windows, however they will not troubleshoot your problems. Furthermore you may wish to consider waiting a bit because the current instal does not contain fan drivers which means that while in Windows you run the chance of overheating your MacBook Pro. Given time this is likely to be fixed.

In the long run it is better to only run OS X, however if you are forced to run Windows the least we Mac users can do is buy Apple hardware and software and dual boot our computers when required to. If I were in your situation I too would rather have a product made by Apple than any other manufacturer.

The best option for running Windows on a Mac?

Though I'm loving my MacBook Pro, the only thing I would like to improve is the capacity for playing games. And for that I really need Windows.
So, I have a copy of Windows XP, and I have a copy of Parallel. I've installed Parallel and Windows XP, but it's limited and I can't figure out how to make my graphics card (which is 256MB) work with it. It seems to need to use the Parallel Graphics. So, some questions:
1) Is there a way to play the best Windows games using Parallel?
2) Is there a better alternative? One of my friends mentioned Bootcamp to me. Would that be better? Is there any program that would allow me to run Windows and use the full power of my system to play the games?

For gaming... your best option is to use BootCamp. Parallels is an excellent program... and it runs Windows well under most conditions... but it is still not great for gaming (even with version 3). BootCamp is free. It allows you to boot directly into Windows making your MacBook Pro a full fledged Windows PC. Games will run just as well as they would on any similarly spec'd PC notebook. The BootCamp utility in OS X will allow you to create a Windows driver CD for all of the hardware. You will get full speed 3D, ect. Also... you can use your BootCamp installation of Windows in Parallels... So, after you install Windows via BootCamp, you can delete your previous "Parallels Only" Windows installation and go through the process of installing a new version of Windows in Parallels... you will be able to point it to the copy of Windows you have set up in BootCamp. This way... when you want to play games... you can boot into Windows and run them at full speed... but for those times you are in OS X and you just want to launch an application that does not need all the 3d power, you can launch that same copy of Windows through Parallels.

Running Older Software On OS X

Alright so I'm newer to Macs, only been using them for the last year or so. I've recently bought the Diablo Battle chest, with Diablo 1,2 and the Expansion, all of which according to manual will run on Macs. But when I run the disks, OS X tells me that that 'The Classic Environment Is No Longer Supported'. I also Have a version of Adobe Premier 6.0, which it says the same thing about. Is there anyway around this or did I just waste my money?

Somebody else reported recently that D2 stopped working after the recent Quicktime update. Did you install that?
D2 is basically software written during the Tiger generation and probably when PPCs were dominant. Running it on an Intel machine with Leopard requires several jumps in technology. Some PPC programs don't run well under Rosetta which is what enable PPC programs to run on Intel architecture. Then too, the OS jumps aren't helping.
If you're very, very lucky it might just be a corrupt preferences file causing it to stop. That would be in your user area > library > preferences folder. I don't know exactly what it would be called since I don't have D2 but it would probably have the software author name in it and hopefully something obvious like "Diablo". It would end with .plist. Move it out of there and try starting the program again.

Most users have had no difficulties at all upgrading to Leopard. But just in case something does go wrong, have a bootable clone of your previous system you can revert to. It is also a good idea to make sure your main boot drive checks out okay with Disk Utility before doing any update or upgrade.

Does Mac Mail's "Quick Look URL" option for links prevent software from being downloaded onto my computer?

I received an e-mail from a friend that had a suspicious looking link embedded in it. I did not navigate to the link in my web browser but I did do a "quick look" in Mac Mail. Does this open me up to any vulnerability? If so, is there a way to check to see if any malicious software and/or viruses were downloaded onto my MacBook?

It's possible (more likely the drive is dead) that the drive's directory is damaged. If that's the case, Disk Warrior may be able to fix it. At $80US for Disk Warrior, I'd be more inclined to replace the drive. If your patient and can wield a few small tools, you can replace it yourself.
