Options re: Nike+iPod compatibility with non-nano iPods?

Hi,
I'm a runner who bought a fifth generation ipod (mainly for running) in late 2005. I am interested in the Nike+iPod system but was disappointed to learn it is only compatible with iPod nano, though many nanos use OS 10.3, like the fifth gen. ipod.
Any suggestions beyond selling the one I have and buying an ipod nano?
Thanks

The compatibility of the Nike kit with the nano has more to do with the nano being more suitable for running as it has flash memory and not a hard drive (no skipping or moving parts), and is lighter and smaller too. Much more suitable for activity sports. It has nothing to do with the Mac OS version.
Thank you for the reply, Jeff.
I appreciate your points and I don't mean to belabor the issue. I meant to say I purchased the iPod in late '06, which makes it just over a year old. Technically the Nike+ kit was available then, but it was basically brand new and I don't recall being aware of it.
To respond in support of the 5th gen ipod, personally I've run with it well over 500 miles, up to 13+ miles at a time, over steep hills and through heavy rain and skipping has not been an issue once. The same is true for a few other runners I know who use this model. While the nano is smaller, the 5th gen is a good size as well, and a marked improvement over older devices runners used happily for years, so it is far from a critical issue.
There's nothing you can do other than replace your 5th gen with a nano. There are no options to make your 5th gen work with the Nike kit.
I understand and appreciate Apple's making an iPod tailored to running, but logically activity sports would have been considered a key use from the first iPod, and the pre-nano models are suited to this very well also. I am a usually-happy and consistent Apple customer, am just once in awhile annoyed when good (and relatively new) products are not included for compatibility with new systems. It seems to me that the points you mention, while logical, are far from critical, and that a product less than 18 months old using the same OS could easily have been made compatible with the Nike kit.
Thank you again for the reply, I'll forward my thoughts to iPod feedback.

Keep in mind that you can't drag and drop (transfer) songs from one iPod to another using iTunes either.  The music you want to add from one iPod to the other, must be stored in your iTunes library first.

Nope, I'm sorry. iOS/iTunes only (you need a connection to your network, and the iPod classic doesn't have network capabilities).

Can anyone tell me if the 8G nano ipod will fit the ipod hifi? I purchased ipod hifi last year and 8G ipod is not listed as a module that is compatable. I believe because the 8G was not out at the time. Thanks!

Which generation 8GB Nano? 2nd or 3rd? If it is the 2nd it is fully compatible, I don't have a 3rd generation so I can't help you there.

  • Replacing Ipod mini with New nano,

    Hi
I have purchased my wife to be a new Ipod nano (8gb), she currently uses an Ipod mini (6GB). We use the same PC & to keep both her mini and my 30Gb Ipod video. So she has to manually manage the tunes on her mini.
Now she has this new nano, she wants put the same songs on her shiney blue nano, but this as taken hers hours to shift through all 6000 tracks that we have collected in itunes.
So the question is, is there a simple way to copy the same tracks on the old mini to the new nano?

*is there a simple way to copy the same tracks on the old mini to the new nano?*
You can't copy from one iPod to another and since the old one is being managed manually then you've no original single source to sync from so I'm afraid there is no simple answer.
Something you might want to consider for managing smaller iPods with a large shared library is the option "Sync Music - selected Playlists". Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". This is particularly useful when your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod. When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync". In future if you were to add another iPod it could sync to the same source playlist.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update the iPod from, call it -My iPod Nano for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod: Syncing Music to iPod

  • Imported album to itunes library but it will not sync to my ipod, tried with my husbands ipod and the same thing. What could be the problem?

imported an album to my itunes library, but it won't sync with my ipod classic. I tried it with my husbands ipod also and the same problem. What could be the problem?

Thank you all for your replies. Here is what i ended up doing. I cannot afford any 3rd party software so i went to itunes and manually entered all my playlists. As I had indicated my purchased music was on my new computer just not the playlists  and I could not sync my ipod. After I rebuilt all my playlists I tried to restore my ipod to factory defaults/new. All of the steps called for in apple support and elsewhere were not available to me. I connected my ipod, went to my computer, right clicked my ipod, and formatted. That wiped my ipod so when I connected to itunes it then gave me a restore option. I did the restore and all is good in the empire again. I can now buy new music and sync my ipod so I am a happy camper.
    Thanks to all.

  • IPod sync with 2nd generation iPod?

    Hey gang-
Is the iPod sync supported in iTunes 7 dependent on the most current iPods, or will it work with older iPods, like my 2nd generation iPod? I'd like to use the new iPod sync to sync my authorized MacBook and iMac.
    Dave

Or am I misunderstanding your question?
Perhaps. I'm referring to the new feature in iTunes 7 that allows an iPod to "push" purchased music to all your Authorized computers, thus ensuring that you always have your full Authorized music collection on all your Macs. In other words, as you sync your iPod with each of your computers, it sends the latest purchased music to each.
Here is an article describing what I'm talking about:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.0/en/2586x.html
So I was wondering if that works only with the newest iPods, or also with earlier ones.

  • About had it with this nano ipod

Some months ago, I bought two ipod nanos for myself and my wife. Some time after, my wife's started to skip songs that I'd downloaded from iTunes while playing songs I'd imported from disks. I reset it, I reloaded software, I reloaded songs, I created a separate library for my wife, etc. After each "fix", it works for awhile and then starts doing the same thing all over again. I'm about ready to invoke the "lemon law" on this thing. My ipod does not have this problem. I've read some of the email threads that espouse solutions such as those above, but nothing seems to work for any length of time.
    What a piece of ...

Did you Restore it in iTunes?
Also, try this: in iTunes go to the Store Menu and Deauthorize the computer. Now play one of the songs (in iTunes) that is skipping on her Nano and when prompted enter your Apple ID and password, then Resync her Nano.
If this doesn't work hers may have a hardware problem, it happens. If it is under warranty have it serviced.

  • Ipod compatibility with old mac mini

I have a mac mini running on 10.4.11. Does this man that to buy a new ipod (nano or Touch) I also have to buy a new computer?

If your Mac Mini meets the minimum requirements to install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (which it should) you can go ahead and do so, but you'll need to also purchase a copy of Leopard beforehand from Apple or an online third party reseller.
Here are the minimum requirements, just in case.

  • IPod compatibility with itunes 4.7.1

Hi, I would like to buy an iPod player or mp3 player that will be compatible with my iTunes 4.7.1. This will be a first purchase, I do not need alot of GB or features, least expensive but will work with what I've got.
    Thanks
    imac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I have been checking around, and ipod mini 4GB seems to be the one for me, it will work with my system. Is 135$ a reasonable price for this? Should I look for necessities to include, such as battery, etc, can I use any lithium battery if the battery it comes with wears out, or are they rechargeable. Bear with me as this is my first ipod for my son!
    Thanks alot

  • IPod compatibility with VW cars

My old iPod (I believe it would qualify as first generation) is not recognised by my new VW Golf. Niether will it play my wife's later model. I suspect that I will have to upgrade but I really thought that all iPods were compatible. What is it in the interface that singles it out to be incompatible? I really thought that Apple would ensure seamless connections with all models irrespective of age - it seems that I am wrong. Has anyone out there had this problem?

Thanks for the help. I eventually got it to work.

  • ATOS - Compatibility with non mac machines

Not sure if this is the right forum.
I am trying to find some information on whether ATOS (address to symbols) can be used on a non-Mac Unix machine like Sun Solaris (Sparc or X86) and Linux.
    Has anyone tried this?

Thanks for your quick response, Neil. I am aware it's created by Apple. I was hoping it will be usable on other Unix environments.
I am trying to set up a batch process to run ATOS on some crashes. I don't have an extra Mac handy. I may have access to some spare Sun Sparc machines. I was wondering if I copy the tool and required symbol files etc it will work.
The man page generally says ATOS is Mac OS X developer tool. I don't know the details of the low level ties with the operating system, but thought if we give it required symbols it might just work? Is it worth a try? Or you definitely know it's not going to work. In that case i don't want to waste time tracking down the Sparc machines.

My daughter's iPod has frozen on a web page. The lock button doesn't work so she uses the assistive touch but even that won't work and can't do a hard reset...help,

    Try:

RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:

    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
