OptiPlex 7020 MT Video/Power Upgrades

I recently acquired a Dell OptiPlex 7020 MT through work for a good price and the option to use payroll deduction to spread out the cost. Let me start by saying that I realize this is really meant for the office and not for home/gaming purposes. However, having the i7, 16 GB of RAM, etc. makes it tempting just to do a little bit of gaming at home. However, I've been rather underwhelmed by the AMD R5 240's performance.
I've been looking at what my options are for upgrading, and I'm left with a couple of questions.
- The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti seems like a good card to go for. Not too expensive at $100-150 and there's low power consumption at around 55-60 watts (up from the 50 watts that the R5 240 supposedly uses). However, most pages I can find for this card recommend a minimum of a 300 watt power supply, while the 7020 comes with a 290 watt (80 plus bronze) power supply. It seems like it would be pushing it to try to make it work anyways. On the other hand, it doesn't seem like much more power usage than the current video card. There's the argument that I'll never hit 100% power utilization on all of the components in the system (and you'd hope that there would be extra power capacity for an additional hard drive, etc.), but I don't like taking that gamble. There's also the issue of BIOS compatibility, etc. that I've heard others complain about with third-party video cards. Has anyone had success with a GTX 750 Ti or even just the plain GTX 750 with 2 GBs of RAM in an OptiPlex 7020 MT with the stock power supply?
- The next upgrade to look into logically is the power supply. Dell chooses this exact same video card, the GTX 750 Ti, for the higher end of their XPS line of desktops, though they are nice enough to include a 460 watt power supply for that configuration. I know previous models of the OptiPlex and Precision machines that I've worked with have been using standard ATX connections for a while now. Suffice it to say that I am VERY disappointed that Dell has gone to using a proprietary 8-pin connector from the power supply on the 7020, reminding me of older models that used to try the same thing. I checked and even our 7010's have the regular ATX power connections. So disappointed! This will likely be the last Dell I buy for awhile if they keep that kind of stuff up. Nevertheless, I'm pretty much stuck with this purchase until I pay it off, so I'd like to figure some kind of solution out. Are there any options for upgrading the power supply in the OptiPlex 7020 MT, even if it means changing pins in the connectors or getting a higher capacity power supply from a different Dell model that uses the same connection with the motherboard?
Again, I realize this is meant to be an office machine and not a home/gaming machine. I'm trying to make it something it isn't really intended to do. I also realize this is a fairly new model, hence the lack of good information out there for what people have and haven't tried with it yet. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated! I also hope this helps prevent anyone else from making the mistake I did by thinking they could buy this machine and easily upgrade the video card/power supply afterwards. Finally, please let me know if additional information is needed.

Newer Dells even with 305W power supplies have 20 to 25W on the +5VSB.
This means you must use an EPS 12V 2.92 certified supply because ATX even version 2.4 only requires 10W on the +5VSB
Minimum Recommended Upgrade for A Dell Tower is CORSAIR CS750M.
550W is too small.  Generic 550W power supplys are NOT AS GOOD as the Dell 305W power supply.
The EPS12V spec 2.92 guarantees 170w combined on the 5V/3.3V rails and 20W on the 5VSB as well as 45 amps on a Single 12V rail.
Note on the Label for the Dell that they provide 20W on the 5VSB.
If you add up all the currents its more than 305W but Dell does not overstate the total output of the supply.
5V @ 22A = 110W
5VSB @ 4A = 20W
3.3V @ 17A = 56.1 W
12V @ 36A = 432 W
-12 @ 1A = 12W
630.1 W Total on 305W power supply.
80 percent of 750 = 600W
80 percent of 550 = 440W
This means that 550W supplies for some dell models will not even turn on the machine due to lack of power in specific areas.
And no supply is 100 percent efficient.
This is why I recommend an EPS12v  Corsair CS750M
DELL's 525W power supply Guarantees 150W on the 3.3v and 5v Rails. But also again Rates the 5VSB at 20W.
You Need an EPS12V 2.92 certified Power Supply
Dell supply's have 20 to 25W on +5VSB and most cheapo units have 10W or less.   Dell Supply's guaranteed 130 to 180W on 3.3v/5v rail and Others do not.
Minimum recommended unit is CORSAIR CS750M.

  • Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Guido

    Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • DVI & ADC video card upgrade???

What can I get to replace the stock 64mb AGP card (at least I think it is) in my MDD Dual 1.42 machine. I currently run two Acrylic Cinema Displays, a 20" via DVI and a 17" via ADC...
Is ADC going to limit my options? If so, I can use a second ADC-DVI for the 17" monitor.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanx

Okay, so it sounds like I should "dump" the ADC idea.
    Then an I looking for a card with 2-DVI or 1-DVI and 1-VGA ???
I've followed several of your discussions, but still need a little help with the Video Card upgrade education. Flashed cards kind of scare me, but are they okay to use? I don't know if I could tell the difference anyway. Asking a seller on eBay if it is in most cases won't get you anywhere either.
You've talked about the 7800gs card. Any others I could consider? I've read that some cards don't work in a FW800 MDD machine.

  • No sound in MPEG2 video after upgrading to QT 7.6.6

I still have a problem with QT playing the sound of MPEG2 videos after upgrading to QT 7.6. I had this problem one year ago and solved it by downgrading to QT 7.5. Now I did the automatic update suggested by the system which insrtalled QT 7.6.6
Unfortunately again no sound when playing MPEG2 videos (I have the MPEG2 QT component installed). When converting the video to MPEG1 or MP4 there are no problems at all. So it seems to be a problem of the MPEG2 component together with QT 7.6
Any idea how I could solve this? Is the a MPEG2 component update which works with QT 7.6?
    Thanks for your help
    Wolfgang

I downloaded the new MPEG2 component (unfortunately I had to pay the 20 EUR as my previous download has been in something liek 2008 and is no longer registered in the Apple Store
Strange! I made my original pre-QT v6.4 MPEG-2 component purchase in September of 2002 and it was automatically updated to the version for QT 6.4 thru QT v7.5 which was then automatically updated for QT v7.6 and later. It would seem the European stores may operate differently than the US store. You may wish to hang onto you purchase information in case this ever happens again in order to discuss the matter with Customer Service or at least learn the specific terms/limitations of your purchase agreement and/or account.
I hope this solves the problem but it seems most likely that the incompatibility of the old MPEG2 component and QT 7.6.x is the reason for my problem. You may be right
I opened up the installer package after reading your latest post and noticed a statement that QT 7.6 is "required" for this update. So it looks like there were some compatibility issues with the change to QT v7.6 software.
In any case, wish you the best of luck...

  • Using Flip Video Power Adaptor to charge an iPod Touch

Is it possible to use a Flip Video Power Adaptor to charge my iPod Touch without damaging it?
The Flip Adaptor says: Output +5VDC 1A (5W)
    Thanks

With this sort of thing you have a choice. You can take your chances with the cheap option, or possibly pay more than is necessary, but have what is pretty much a sure thing.
If we were talking maybe a $100 or less MP3 player, I'd say go with the cheap option because the worst that happens is you have to buy a new MP3 player for around $100. Annoying, but generally doable.
With expensive electronics, I'd suggest the sure thing. If you go cheap, and it fries the logic board on the MBP, then you're looking at like $1200 minimum. Probably around $200+ for the iPod, and around $500 for the iPhone. If Apple's gear ends up frying the various devices, Apple would be pretty much obliged to replace them. You buy some third party stuff, they'll just say the fault must have been with the third party adapters, and that you're SOL unless you cough up the cash for a repair/replacement.
So, at the end of the day, is it worth risking around $2,000 worth of equipment just to save a few bucks on a travel adapter? Only you can answer that.

  • Can't watch video since upgrade to IOS6, anyone solve this?

Anyone else having a problem streaming video since upgrade to IOS 6?

I had the same annoying problem (iPhone 4 with ios 6.1.2), but just found a very easy fix
    1) Go to App Store and install the Perfect Browser App
    2) Open App, click settings and scroll down to "Select Tab for TV Out" (Perfect Browser just added this functionality a week or two ago)
    3) Top right hand corner of the browser you'll see an area to search YouTube...just type in whatever video you're looking for...
Once you've found the video, just click play (as normal) and voila...because you are viewing in TV Out mode, whatever you're watching now displays perfectly on your TV with full sound...  Nice. ENJOY!!
Note - when you close down Perfect Browser it will automatically return to normal web mirroring mode, so you'll need to select TV Out again next time you want to watch videos on your TV.

  • CS4 unable to encode videos after upgrading from CS3

CS4 was unable to export and encode a video after upgrading from CS3.  The error message indicated the the file could not be found.  To fix this problem do the following.  Create a short cut to adobe premiere pro (executable program) named "Premiere"     Then place the short cut in the folder C:Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/dynamiclink    After doing this my version worked fine.

The problem mainly occures when one then removes the CS3 version of Adobe Premiere.   I have found a tech note on this problem at:

  • Video Card Upgrades

I'm looking to either upgrade or augment the vid display card in my (admittedly) older G5. It was my severance pay from my previous employer, and I still haven't been able to find a job, so my financial resources are a tad limited at the moment.
I've seen Nvidia Geforce 6600 128mb on Ebay and I was wonder if it's a suitable replacement for the 64mb card I've currently got. ATI is the manufacturer of the existing card.

Seems like you must have an early G5 but not sure which exact model, but one with AGP 8x.
There are a number of threads of others asking for video card upgrades. And there is a great hardware resource and database:

    I think there is/was a 6800 Ultra also.

  • 600 watt power supply questions and video card upgrade questions

I am looking to upgrade to a Xfx Radeon 7970 Double D graphics card but i was wondering if the HP 600w psu that came with my Hp Envy Phoenix H9-1350 has a 8 pin and 6 pin Pci-e connector because that is what the Radeon 7970 needs. Also I am wondering if it will fit into the Hp Envy Phoenix H9-1350 because the case seems small but the card is only 9.3" long. I currently have an Amd Radeon 7670 but I think it is time for an upgrade but I am just not sure if the power supply has the correct power connections needed for the Radeon 7970.
This is the card I am looking to get:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150665
This is the computer I have:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+ENVY+Phoenix+Desktop+-+12GB+Memory+-+2TB+Hard+Drive/6890832.p?id=12...

I understand you want to know if the power supply will have the necessary connectors for the desired video card.
According to the specifications, it lists the case as a mini-tower which is on the small side.  You may need to use a tape measure to find out exactly how much room the system has in regards to length.  It has become much better, but other components (such as the HDD) were at the end of the PCIe slot limiting the length of a video card.  Sorry I couldn't provide anything more specific.  The manuals are somewhat vague as far as the internal dimensions and I don't have access to one to verify the dimensions.
Ordinarily, I can find more information regarding the power supply not that seems not to be the case here.  According to this thread, the PSU has two 6 pin PCIe connectors.  You would need something like this to convert one of the 6pin connectors to 8pin.  As long as the PSU is capable of pushing enough watts, it shouldn't be an issue.  The card needs up to a 500W power supply, so the 600W power supply should be just enough to cover it.

  • Can you help advise re video card upgrade for my G4 MDD?

Hello all. Just upgraded to Tiger from 10.2.8 a couple weeks ago. Should have done it long ago... like having a new computer! I want to get more out of the OS for mostly graphic apps like PS-CS2, Painter, Freehand, Fontographer, etc. Right now I have 1.5 GB of RAM & will probably max it out pretty soon.
No video or games (at least for near term). Have been doing homework by lurking here, studying mfr. sites & reading things like John Siracusa's great article (book) on arstechnica.com: "Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger". I spent a lot of last night digesting that. So I think I know what I want to do, but would appreciate opinions.
    1. I'd like to get a graphics card that will get my G4 to Core Image-enabled. According to this -- http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/coreimage/ -- and other advice I've run across in these forums, I should probably get a Radeon 9800 (or 9600) Pro Mac Edition. The downside w this is just that they're currently not to be found at any dealers I've called or googled because of the AMD merger/backorder situation. Same goes for the 9600. Bummer. In the meantime I'm wondering if one of Nvidia models listed in the Apple page might work in my machine. Probably not... but does anyone know different? Here are the models listed:
    nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
    nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
    nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
    6800 GT DDL
I think I've seen most of these configured for AGP 4x, as I would need. Just don't know if any would fit into my G4... or if it would support the power requirements, heat levels, and so on that these things apparently generate.
    2. I have another requirement besides just running Tiger happily. I have hundreds of fairly big image files that all still need a lot of work, for a book project I've been commissioned to do. Average file size around 200MB. And more than half of them are in a "Legacy" proprietary format used by an out of print app called Live Picture. So even just to convert all of them from that IVUE / FITS format scheme I still need either classic or 9.2 for a while. I can still do some things in L.P. better than in Photoshop.
It's a pretty interesting piece of software. The IVUE file is the base bitmap image. All corrections are in Vector layers on top. When done, the layers you want to apply are turned on and the final (or workaround buildout) is rendered as a TIFF, PS or stn file. (It also has a great prepress filtering engine to optimize cmyk for specific outputs). This app is VERY monitor drawing intensive - especially for layers with textures or selective color mods. When I was an early adopter in the program years ago, the developers constantly told us to do things like use as small a window as possible; turn off antialiasing unless really needed; build out intermediate IVUE's before collecting too many complex layers, and things like that. It has it's own VM system, and it does not like another Virtual Mem. running. Of course in Classic you can't turn off the OSX VM!
Development on this app stopped the arrival of OSX, and I think even before OS9! It was crash-prone back then, and of course is even more fussy in Classic. I can boot in OS9, but for some reason prefer the "security" of protected mode, since these new-fangled machines no longer have that civilized reset button.
So if I understand things properly, I want a graphics engine that will take the load off RAM for Quartz Extreme tasks. I've come to think that maxing RAM AND VRAM utilization will let me do more before the crash. Am I right?
Not necessarily the same needs as for Photoshop in Tiger; but for me right now this is my critical/important working environment, as this is a big paid project (it will be a vintage watch coffee table book - which draws from a couple of the world's notable private collections). It shouldn't be long before I'll be getting a MacPro anyway. Am sort of holding out for the sophomore edition, and Leopard.
What would you guys do? Thanks in advance for your consideration. I will greatly value your input.
    Best regards,
    Mike
    G4 MDD 867, G4 Q'slvr 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also iBook G3 900 10.4.8 (G4 733 still running 10.2.8)
    G4 MDD 867, G4 Q'slvr 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   also iBook G3 900 10.4.8 (G4 733 still running 10.2.8)

Thanks very much for the info. Kind of what I thought.
Re their price gouging - Ouch! A 66% markup from retail, and they're refurbished. I think I can wait a month or so... of course if those cards were dc'd, I might consider it. But I talked to a guy at ATI, and he didn't give any such indication.
I did find a GeForce4 Ti4600 (NOS) for a pretty reasonable figure at another site, but that's an older, slower card. I'm impatient, so I'm tempted, but I think I'd be kicking myself if I didn't wait for the better solution.
Are you saying that I won't really do any better in Classic with the ATI, compared to my stock GeForce4 32MB? Forgot to mention I'm using a 22" Cinema (ADC), if that makes any difference. And I'll be running Classic probably on top of Jaguar (I installed Tiger on a fresh new second internal drive). I thought I'd skip mixing Classic with Tiger altogether, but when I booted up the first time, there it was in Sys. Pref's. I guess it saw OS9 on the other drive during install. That's sort of funny.
I guess my question is mostly answered. Will put up the flag shortly.
    Thanks again.

  • My iPad2 will not play videos after I upgraded to IOS 5.1.1.  How can I fix it?at?, My iPad2 will not play videos afteri upgraded to IOS 5.1.1.  How cani ix that?

I have an ipad2.  Ever since I upgraded to the IOS 5.5.1 I am having problems playing videos on Netflix or YouTube.  I do to have this problem on my laptop, so it isn't in my wireless router.  I have cleaned out the cache on the iPad and that didn't help. I've restarted it too.
I hope someone has an idea how to fix it.  I'm lost without it now.
    Thanks.

Do the videos start to play and quit? Do they not start at all?
Close all apps and restart the iPad and then try YouTube or Netflix again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
You can also try resetting/rebooting the iPad and see if that helps.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Even if your the internet is OK with other applications doesn't mean that there isn't an issue with the way that the iPad is connecting to NetFlix and YouTube. You can always try rebooting your router - unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Why does my ipad 2 keep dropping the connection to my BT Home Hub, whilst streaming video, since upgrading to IOS 6?

Ever since i have upgraded to IOS6 My connection to my BT Hub 3 wifi router keeps dropping out whenever i am streaming video. I have an Apple TV connected as well which is fine as are other devices, its just the Ipad since the move to IOS6. It is really frustrating and i had hoped the 6.01 release would have resolved it, but it didnt. I have seen other similar comments, i just want to know if this is a common known fault which Apple are going to fix.
The strength of Apple has always been 'it just works' , i can't help but feel that there are cracks appearing in this.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
