Optival RAM by Omni Technologies?

Hello,
I was considering adding 2gb of RAM to my Mac Pro and I found a good deal for some RAM called Optival by Omni Technologies. I never heard of this RAM but nothing looks wrong with it and its lesser than half the price of RAM for Mac Pros from Apple and Crucial.
Anyone know any bad things about this RAM? I found someone else asking about it on some forum and someone replied saying it works but isn't the highest quality of RAM. I don't know much about that except that RAM is RAM and if it works then it works heh.
Any insight if you have used or know anything about this particular brand of RAM is appreciated.
Thanks!

As you didn't provide a link, I Googled "Optival Omni Technologies" which yielded an eBay store. I looked at the 2GB ($389) module and would not buy from them. For one thing, no mention was made of the fact that the Mac Pro really needs to have RAM purchased and installed in matched pairs. Then the heat sinks are the flat heat sinks which are found on less expensive RAM. Such RAM is listed as having "Apple Specs" but without the extra large heat sinks it often overheats and causes ECC errors.
I'd suggest that if you want the least expensive Mac Pro RAM with a pretty good track record, you look at Max Upgrades...

  • OSX hangs during boot or install

    Hello all,
I'm writing this because I'm not really sure where else to post this at to get an indepth answer. Currently I have a dual G4 450mhz AGP PowerMac that I bought used. When I purchased it, it had 768mb of ram and the only thing it didn't have was a working hard drive. After putting in a new hard drive the system worked great when i intially installed OS9 and later OSX for fun.
However I had to remove the 768mb of RAM because a client PC needed it and that took priority over my dual G4 at the time. Just the other week I purchased 2 x 256mb of RAM from Omni Technologies (omnitechnologies.biz) which guarantees working ram for specified Apple systems.
Upon receiving that ram and installing it, I powered on the G4 only to find it would "hang" when booting OSX (10.3.9). The symptoms are as follows: When powering on I hear the normal chime and the white screen with gray apple logo appears. Seconds later the spinning progress indicator shows up spinning in circles as OSX is booting. However after about 5 minutes with no DVD/hdd activitity, the system then hangs. The gray apple logo changes to a gray 'prohibited' logo. It's the logo of the circle with the slash through it. Like the kind you see over no-smoking signs.
I figured the hard drive was messed up and I decided to reinstall OSX cleanly. However when I booted from the CD by pressing 'c', the EXACT SAME symptoms above happened. It was at this point I started getting really worried. So I decided to remove the hard drive temporarily and boot from the CD just to make sure it really was booting from the CD. Unfortunately the exact same symptoms happened.
Out of desperation to make sure that my hardware was OK, I decided to install OS 9.2.1 which installed and WORKED perfectly. I also installed UbuntuPPC and Slackintosh versions of linux which also installed and worked perfectly.
The issue appears to reside with OSX. I've borrowed friends cd's of 10.2-10.3 and all of them will NOT install. They start to boot from the CD, but never even make it to the first window.
    Help!!
    Brad

Actually trying one stick in each individual slot was one of the first things I did. Unfortunately that did not provide a resolution for me.
Thanks for the links regarding the broken folder/prohibitory sign. I read those and they made mention of resetting the nvram and pram. I just did that a bit earlier today but logging into the open firmware by pressing Option-Command-F-O and typing: reset-nvram; set-defaults; reset-all.
Upon the reboot and after I plugged the hdd with OSX on it back into the system, the resolution was a bit off as I figured. But this time there was no progress indicator. Instead only the gray apple logo showed and there was no response from the hdd or cdrom drive.
I also noticed that the USB mouses red light went out within the first 45 seconds of booting. I swapped out keyboards and mice and the new ones did the same thing as well. I also tested the memory in an imac I have and OSX that is installed ont heimac works gerat with that stick of memory. I'm leaning towards the fact that the memory I have is fine, being that it was ordered from a company that specifically guaranteed it to work on macs of all kinds.
    Any other thoughts or ideas?

  • Buying RAM for Quicksilver

I am thinking about buying this RAM. there are two specs that bother me about it.
1: it's only 2.5 volts and Apple says a Quicksilver requires 3.3 volts
2: it says it is a dual 512 MB card. I read in an Apple article that no memory gains are seen when two DIMMS of the same size are installed. My J21 slot has 512 MB in it. Does a dual 512 MB in J22 improve memory or no?

    Hello,
I've just added older Infineon 512MB SDRAM into my Quicksilver and it works and this RAM isn't offered at ANY apple shop. Try to check developer note about your model (search on developer.apple.com for "PowerMac G4"), there is a section about RAM requirements in great detail. Usually if you try google: "type of your ram", you'll find similar specs on the site of manufacturer. If they match, no problem. If they don't match - 90% it won't work. Care about number of units (has to be 16, 8 on each side of RAM for 512MB pieces)
It's just my opinion, but I think that there is no need to pay extra money just for RAM which is recomended by OWC or any other apple shop. I think most reliable source of information is detailed specification provided by manufacturers.
I guess "1GB RAM kit" is just "psychological trick" to sell better - eg. it's generally known, that 1GB DDR dualchannel kit consisting of 2x512MB pieces can be faster than single 1GB piece in some computers. Nothing to do with SDRAM, which you need.

  • Opinion needed on ram.

This is a ram manufacture that I found on Ebay, http://stores.ebay.com/OMNI-TECHNOLOGIES. They offer two types of ram that are compatable with the Mac Pro. One is called Optival and the other is called Hyperfomance. Could some one check their store and let me know which sticks match the ones that come with the Mac Pro system. I now I am asking alot, but I dont want to damage any thing by not using matched sticks. I will soon be making the switch to Mac and this will be my last system for a long while. I just don't want to screw it up.

Also search the net under <Optival> without the chevrons. The postings under that are mixed some report errors per Sys prof some say good, some say ready replacement and others say the are friendly on the phone. The mfr (?) Optival are apparently in Florida so you should be better able to track them than I from here in Ultima Thule. The specs on the website of the vendor ,Omni Techologies, gives the right specs.
    THEY SAY about your pacage: 4.0GB, Apple Spec Certified, DDR2 PC2 6400, 800MHZ, ECC Fully Buffered, 24 Pin /Gold lead, DIMM 256 x 4, 16 chip, 8 Byte, CAS 5/4, 7.5ns, 1.8v.
The ILLUSTRATION showsthem to have substantial heatsinks and a post (but on another ram module) shows the giving the reply that they use the same heatsinks as Apple. I don.t think Apple make heatsinks and they (Apple) use various makers so you work out what the heatsink reference means.
P.S. there is a US phone number 800-805-8655 on the Omni Technologies page I don't know a phone number for Optival. Ask for the mfr phone on number given, which is said to be for support and advice. They do not seem that cheap to me at $2609.99 for the package you mention but you are getting 16GB.
The Omni page gives it's address as " Our postal address is 1515 N. Federal Highway 300 Boca Raton, FL 33432. We can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] or you can reach us by telephone at 561-750-2484."
I have no personal knowledge of them. I would let you make the experiment.

  • RAM type

I am about to upgrade two 1.42 Ghz G4 Mac Minis from 512MB-each to 1GB-each. RAM vendors such as Crucial and Omni Technologies recommend using DDR333 PC2700 RAM. However when I look at one of the Mac Minis, the System Profiler says that the currently installed RAM has as its speed: PC3200U-30330. This was the RAM that came installed in the computer from Apple. Should I be looking for something faster than PC2700? Thanks.

Ah, then you're in luck because this is an easier task than on the Intel models. On the G4 minis, once the case is off the single memory slot is accessible without further disassembly, while on the Intel models it's necessary to remove the drive tray also.
A brief but good description is at http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/tutorials/macmini-ram/ - bearing in mind that for the G4 mini you stop at point 5.
Or http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2005/01/macminiinside/ which is the first take-apart guide published, when the G4 model was first released.
There's also a link to a video at the bottom of the page at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/ (click on the size of video best suited to your internet connection) and another at http://macminiupgrade.blogspot.com/

  • Buying RAM - G.Skill vs. Patriot

I'm about to buy some RAM at Newegg.com and I was wondering which I should go with? I've read reviews for both and they are both good for the most part and the prices of the two are very close so price isn't really a factor. One review I read stated that the Patriot Ram will not run at 667mhz and only at 533. Is this true? I've also read that the GSkill RAM requires a lot of pressure to install. I've never installed RAM before so I wouldn't want to accidentally void my warranty. How does the Patriot installation compare? Thanks a lot

    http://www.ramseeker.com/pc/index.php
This site is always a good place to start.
    I've used memory from:
    Omni Technologies
    18004memory.com
in both my MacBook's and my Mac Mini's without any problem.
Prices have gone up in the past few weeks. About a month ago I bought 1GB SODIMM's for around $79.00 each.

PS I don't think I saw either brand listed... ??

  • RAM Vendors

I'm thinking about buying some RAM and saw that ramseeker.com lists some 512 MBs for as low as $42 (Omni Technologies) and has others for as much as $122 (Crucial). I've read that Crucial seems to be the most reputable source for RAM, but is it worth it at triple the price? Is there some horrible thing about those other vendors that I don't know? Is it likely that their RAM wouldn't work? Most of them have warranties, though, so it seems like it would be fine to buy from them. Any thoughts?

I've been shopping for memory. I thought that Apple builds for compatibility with "industry standard" RAM, but apparently sometimes their products can be picky.
I'd like to buy from Crucial, since their pricing is generally competitive and their quality/compatibility/reliability is well known. I've purchased from them before (for my iBook G3 600), where the price was competetive and the memory has always worked.
Their current pricing seems to be weird, shifting from day to day or minute to minute. The CT464095 (1GB PC2700 SODIMM ) I'd like to get seems to have different pricing that varies up to $10. I tried looking up the price today, and I got $162. Then I tried other browsers and got $152. I reset Safari, tried again and got $152. Perhaps they use some sort of strange, variable pricing scheme like Amazon.com was criticized for.
For $40, I might take the chance on some off-brand. However - for $150, I'd like to get some sort of assurance that it'll work. I could take my chances on some generic memory not specifically recommended for my application, but most retailers make it difficult to return memory. I would recommend Crucial, but recheck their prices, since they seem to change often.

  • Help/Info regarding the CL rating of RAM upgrades.

I'm upgrading my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 17 to 8GB Ram and I'm curious if anyone can offer advise regarding the CL rating. All the DDR3 1333GHz SODIMM kits have a CL9 rating. Is this a higher latency than the 4GB of ram that I have already? If so, will more latency actually do more harm than good??

No, CL9 is a standard. I have the same model and put 8G from Omni Technologies in mine. It screams!

hey guys, i am 15 and i am really getting interested in graphic design and video editing (aka photoshop and imovie). so is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?
also, will this fit in a MacBook and/or should i buy a different brand? if so, from where?
    thanks alot for any help.
    Chris

I wouldn't take the risk of buying RAM from an eBay vendor. You ask a very relevant question -- "is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?" -- and with a no-name vendor, nobody is likely to be able to tell you.
Many people can answer that question for a whole bunch of known, reputable vendors.
Some good choices in the US include OtherWorld Computing and Small Dog Electronics; scan the discussions on this forum for many, many others.
Macs can be touchy about RAM, and the few dollars you might save buying from an eBay vendor simply aren't worth the risk.
Buy from a reputable, known vendor who will stand behind their product and offer a warranty.

  • Hyper Ram

I am wondering there are some auctions on ebay that use the word HYPER in them. They sell for more.
One is OPTIVAL ram. Is this good or bad or what. Is it worth the extra money for HYPER ram.
The other is Macramdirect.com they are calling thiers hypervelocity
    What is this all about?

It's the latest. They've squeezed a 16MB frontside cache into the packet regulator. Very expensive because everything is miniature.

Tried every orientation conceivable - just crashes when expanded ram is loaded to its specificed max - 2GB.
Upgraded BIOS to 3.2 - no change

  • Stock RAM Configuration for 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Hello,
I have a new 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo on it's way to me and I need to order a RAM upgrade. I know the specifications of what I need, but am getting conflicting information from the retailer on how the stock models are configured for RAM. The total amount is 2GHz. Does anyone know if this amount is provided by one or two RAM modules?

You'll find the RAM is in a 2 x 1GB configuration. Unfortunately they both need to come out for you to upgrade to 4GB RAM in a 2 x 2GB configuration. Still cheaper than going with Apple which makes it a little softer.

  • Upgrading an early 2005 G5 Power Mac - memory & HD - your hindsight appreci

Hello, I have an early 2005 G5 Power Mac, dual 2.3 Ghz, 2GB memory, and a 400GB Hitachi Drive.
In researching memory and hard drives, I come face to face with all the engineering terms and now have cold feet about it.
My existing memory is called: PC3200U-30330 DDR SRAM. I found a Samsung module on the web called a PC3200 DDR400 for $61 but the vendor won't confirm compatibility. Can anyone recommend a competitively priced substitute for the expensive Apple part? Is there a rule of thumb on knowing how much is too much or should I just buy 6 additional 1GB modules and have done with it.
I have one HD. I assume it is a SATA-1. I'd like to buy a 500mb 2nd drive. I have read the SATA-2 drives are backward compatible; are they? How should the jumper on the new drive be set: cable select??
Finally, are there any performance suggestions anyone could mention for me to look into? I am editing music files in the 10 to 75mb range, cutting and re-constructing movie clips in the 4.7 gb range.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
    Sam

    Hi,
the RAM compatible with your computer you can find here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=219&type=Memory&TI=1906&shoup grds=Show+Upgrades
And also on other Mac's sites like Crucial, Omni Technologies
I would be very careful with PC's RAM - some of them can work with Mac, but some don't.
Hard disk SATA-2 is backward compatible, so you can buy for example Maxtor MaxLine Pro 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
    or WD RE2 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD5000YS/
    or Hitachi:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A31619/
I think that you don't need more then the next 2GB of RAM. In fact, if you editing music - your current 2GB seems to be fine. But always 4 GB is better then 2 GB
And performance suggestion in this case is faster processor - so, you can buy used Quad G5, or better MacPro 3.0 with 2 GB RAM.
    Marek.

  • My iMac won t wake up after going to sleep

Ok, here s my problem. When the computer goes to sleep, later I press a key, the monitor stays black, the fans spin up a bit, and then I have to pull the power plug cause nothing can wake it up...
    what to do?

I'd like to post a reply in this forum because I've had a similar issue and I'd like to see what could come of a little discussion. This iMac is 2 weeks old, I purchased a 1 GB RAM chip (from Omni Technologies through Ramseeker.com) to upgrade from 512 stock. The RAM installed with no problems and I have to say; this is the easiest upgrade I have ever made, Apple's design for opening the computer is truly supreme.
So I read about 128bit vs 64bit data paths and got greedy for power realizing that my RAM was not matched. So I contacted Omni and ordered 2 matched 1GB chips and planned to return the 1GB chip I had previously purchased. Again, the RAM installed with no problems, but this time my computer would not wake from sleep no matter what. Exactly as Tomi K. describes; blinking light goes off, fan spins up, but the screen stays blank. Hardware tests and applications work fine, but the computer will not wake from sleep. I have been all over these discussions, resetting, unplugging, and trying different combinations of RAM etc. The only thing that works is the original combination of 1.5GB of RAM, which completely solves the problem. I'm baffled and I am curious... could this sleep issue really be related to the RAM even though everything else works and tests fine? Should I try to get another kit of RAM and see if that works? Any feedback would be appreciated.
