Optura 600 w Final Cut Express HD

Has anyone been able to make it work? I can use the camera fine with iMovie but Final Cut Express won't take it. At this point I feel like I need to get a new camera.

I have MVX4i that is the PAL version of the Optura 600.
It works very well, and I tried many different connections with FCE 3.5.1: capturing, playback, A/D and D/A conversion. So probably your problem has to do with FCE settings, not with the camcorder.

  • Final output of Final Cut Express HD 3.5 is blurry and out of focus.

Using clear/sharp '.mov' files as clips. Doing simple editing, nothing fancy. When I finally output the project using 'Export/Using QuickTime Conversion,' the final is blurry and out of focus. I've tried every compression type (H264, Animation, etc.). Same problem. Anyone know why this is happening?
Although the specs for my computer are well within the Final Cut Express guidelines (I've even upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon 9800 Pro 256 MB), I'm still thinking that perhaps the G4 I'm using doesn't have enough juice to run the FCE software. By the way, I don't have any other programs active when using FCE. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.
Here's what I'm (trying) to do:
I'm creating short 5 minute tutorial movies that will be distributed as QuickTime movies (burned to disk) for short run distribution (college).
Here's the process: the movie itself is a recording of monitor screen actions recorded (audio and video) using Snapz Pro movie mode. The recorded size is 800 x 600. There might be 5 such 1 or 2 minute clips. The quality is excellent. I bring them in to FCE, drop all the clips on the same track, and add simple transitions. That's it.
Now I need to somehow get a final QuickTime movie, with close to the same quality I had in the clips.
So... I take the FCE file, output it using 'Export>QuickTime Conversion,' using the same size I originally recorded in, 800 x 600. Tried every codec available. Every time, the end result is a very blurred version of the original Snapz Pro recordings.
I've even tried outputting the FCE file as 'Export>QuickTime Move' (not using the conversion method). Opened that up in QuickTime Pro with the same result: blurred and out of focus.
I'm viewing the exported file in QuickTime Pro, with the 'Movie Properties' setting of 'High Quality.'
Any clue? This is driving me crazy. But I'm determined to get this right.

  • Camcorder Question/ Final Cut Express 2

    Hello All,
I am looking to buy a new camcorder as my old one (Sony DCR-PC100e) has died on me. Am thinking of the Canon. Like the look of the XM2 but notice that on this board a lot of people talking about the HV20 and HV30.
I need mini-DV, am not bothered about HD necessarily cos I don't have an HD tv or anything else that's HD. Obviously am using a Mac, and need it to be compatible with Final Cut Express ( iahve version 2.0.3...old, I know, but suits me fine for now).
Any strong opinions on which one of these is better? XM2 or HV30.
The semi-pro version that Sony has, the DCR-VX2100-E is way too expensive....looks like the Canon XM2 is around £1500 or so?
    Would appreciate any feedback, Thanks.

I have got the HV20 but cannot comment in depth on how good it is as I have only shot about 5 minutes of footage!
However, it received excellent reviews last year and is available for well under £600 new.
There are some 10 huge web pages to this review but they are worth wading through. The other reviews are shorter:-

  • HD Camcorder;non-Intel G5; Final Cut Express

I'm considering the purchase of a new HD Camcorder. I have a non-Intel Mac G5 and Final Cut Express 4 software already loaded. What would be the best and compatible camcorder for my situation for a price in the $600 or under price range?

Thanks...I've dropped the idea of Canon HF200 and am now heading toward a Canon HV40. Have found a source where they are in the $650 range (new). I can swing that.....This leads to another issue that has come up. When I open Final Cut Express, I get a note that says: "Unable to locate the following external device: Apple FireWire (720X480)". Is this a cord that I need to purchase that goes from my G5 to the Camcorder (with a firewire port) OR is it software I need to download that will go on the hard drive?

  • Contrary to Apple's claims, Final Cut Express does work with Rosetta.

Using a rather simple hack, Final Cut Express works well actually. I was impressed that it wasn't as slow as the other apps I had tried in Rosetta. With some more RAM in my iMac, it should be tolerable until the Universal version is available.
Trick to get it running is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=335392&tstart=0

Well, it works for a lot of people and it's now working for me. I suppose some features may not work but I haven't found them yet. It's running faster than it did on my G4 and I've already edited a short piece and printed it back to video.
In fact it even works on my iBook G3 600. That's FCP 4 on an iBook G3 600. I'm certainly not throwing any Naettress film effects on but I'm cutting video. And now I can take it on the road. Man, wish I'd have known this earlier.
Anyway, this will certainly allow me to wait until Apple gets the bugs worked out of the first UB versions of the Studio suite before dumping yet another $700 in the kitty. But, hey, it's Apple stuff and it's cool and I'll do it...yet again!

  • I'm running Final Cut Express 2. How can I move entire project and application from one internal hard drive to another? Ran out of space on one drive. Thanks.

I'm running Final Cut Express 2. My video project is 95% done and I've run out of space on my 500g internal hard drive. How can I (1) move the complete FCE program and video to my unused 250g internal hard drive and operate it from there and (2) how do I then purge all the FCE info from the 500g drive without losing anything from the 250 drive?
Also, is it possible to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 when the project is finished? If so, how? I now know this all should have been done before I started. Thanks for the help.

    1. You can't move the application. It must remain on the system drive. Move your capture scratch folder to the external FireWire drive and use the reconnect function in the project.
    2. What's the media 16:9 or 4:3?

  • My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link
    http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/fcpx-bug-best-practices-for-using-external-hard- drives-and-final-cut-pro-x/
You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.
    booya!

  • Final Cut Express won't allow me to capture from my vdo camera

I just loaded Final Cut Express HD on my Mac because I wanted to upgrade from IMOVIE. My Powerbook G4 had no problem capturing video with my Sony HDV 1080i video camera. But I can't get Final Cut Express HD to locate my camera at all no matter what "easy setup" setting I choose. But if I turn on IMOVIE, the program can capture from my video camera no problem. I know the firewire cable is hooked to the computer correctly & the camera is on & in the VTR mode. If anyone can help me identify this problem, I'd really appreciate it because I'm trying to begin a new video project & can't if I can't capture video. Thanks for helping.

Fritz from Technical support told me about a glitch in Final Cut Pro & Express HD that happens when you upgrade to Quicktime 7. He told me to go to this article: Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301852
and follow the instructions & it would fix my problem. It didn't & then of course I called tech support back & it was after hours. I still can't capture from my video camera but it works in IMOVIE. I removed Final Cut Express HD from my computer (even all the files in library/users, etc.) and then reinstalled it. It still gives me the same error even though I have my camera plugged in & turned on. It says unable to locate capture device. This is unbelievable. Hopefully I can get some help. Brian

  • Final cut Express unable to capture

My Final Cut Express wont initialize my deck. A dialog box comes up saying so. one site suggest deleting quicktime receipts in my library folder on my mac, that quicktime needs to be reinstalled, then i should be able to get my canon HV20 video camera to communicate with FCE 4 and start capturing. has anyone heard of resolving my "unable to initialize video deck" issue this way? Any ideas how to get my HV20 and FCP to communicate to eachother?

There is a separate forum for FCE.
Make sure you are using the correct HDV settings in FCE and that the camera is set to output HDV and not downconvert.

  • Final Cut Express won't capture audio with the video anymore, why?

I have used Final Cut Express 4 for over a year now with no problems, but recently I am unable to capture any audio with the video from my camera. I can do it through iMovie no problem. I can't figure out if I changed a setting by accident because everything looks normal to me. Could another program be interfering with this? Quicktime Pro? I have no idea how to fix this.

First of all, we need a bunch of information in order to help. Please provide the specs of the footage and the sequence you are using. Also, are you using DV, HDV, or AVCHD? Do you hear audio when the clip is played in the viewer, or is there no audio at all once the clip is captured/ingested?

  • Panasonic HDC-SD100 media card unable to capture on Final Cut Express 4

No problems at all with transfer to i-movie but just purchased final cut express 4 and problems with capturing from the media card. Signal system on camera is 1080/50i. Have tried setting HD and 1080/50i in the easy set up but no joy. Have tried log and transfer and see clips but on transfer message states no data. Can anyone help with the settings please?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum!
There are many things that could cause this, and almost all have been discussed.
    Some things to try:
    • In the Log and Transfer window, click the preferences button (the gear in the upper right). Make sure audio is set to *Plain Stereo*
    • Also in that preferences window, click the button to *Clear the Cache*
Also, what drive are you using to capture to (internal or external)? How is it formatted, and how much space is left on that drive?

  • IMovie 08, iMovie 6, or Final Cut Express

I just got a new Sony HDR-SR12 HD camera. It records in 1080i. I tried iMovie 08, but I don't like the export options. I used the iMovie 08 import .mov file and opened it in iMovie 6. I exported the video and it doesn't look that good. I'm thinking about Final Cut Express but I don't know how it integrates with iLife apps. What's the best option?

iMovie 08 imports AVCHD in full 1080i. The AVCHD is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080.
The issue comes when you render the project. The iMovie 08 presets max out at 960x540 for Apple TV. Apple TV looks very good because most TVs will upscale it back to 1920x1080.
It is possible to export to Quicktime in full 1920x1080.
However, then you have the problem of how to play it back.
You can play it back at 1920x1080 on your Mac, if your screen is large enough.
You can play it back on a Sony Playstation 3.
You can play it on a BluRay Disk Player.
Toast 9 permits burning a BluRay Disk in full 1920x1080. You will need a BluRay disk Burner for this. Toast 9 also lets you do a short AVCHD/Bluray disk on a regular DVD on a regular DVD burner, but you are limited to about 20 minutes of playing time.
If you burn to a normal DVD in MPEG2, you are limited to 480i, so that is the worst option.

  • Is it possible to transfer stored (b-roll) video footage from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro event library? Is so, what do I need?

I have been editing in final cut express and now that I'm working in Pro X I would like to transfer my b-roll footage from FCX to Pro X. I read that there is an app. that you can buy that does this for Final Cut Pro 7, is this possible with Final Cut Express?

Any media used in FCE can be used in FCP. No third party software is required.
You cannot take an FCE project to FCP. 7toX will not help as FCE has no XML export.

  • From Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Express

I shot something in HD on a P2 card and captured it into a computer with Final Cut Pro. I want to edit it on my laptop at home, on which I have Final Cut Express. If I export the FCP file and make it a quicktime file to use on my FCE, will the video maintain its HD properties? (Forgive my ignorance. I'm still learning.) Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing but if you shot it on P2 media in HD it's probably DVCPRO HD. The codec for this format is only available with FCP. You can't edit this edit in FCE unless you export it to the the Apple Intermediate Codec. Yes, there will be some quality loss in the porcess.

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.
