Optus drop out issue

I note that there is at least one post on this topic - just looking for further input. When buying my iPhone 2 weeks ago I changed from Telstra (not 3G) to Optus 3G. Now my Optus signal seems to drop out very frequently - almost always when I "wake up" my phone but also during calls. Someone noted that if you change your phone to 2G it works better - but what do I lose functionally if I do this?

"what do I lose functionally if I do this?"
You lose the 3g data speeds when using the data network.

  • HH5 (Type A) - Drop-out issues now resolved? Still...

I have had a quick read about the forums - nothing conclusive on this one and as BT told us time and time again there wasn't a fault with the HH5 I don't suppose there will be an official post confirming a fix :-)
So, I had an HH3 with external VDSL modem - all was well. Upgraded to HH5 (Type A) and I had nothing but problems. Constant rebooting and my lovely 78/14 connection becamse 52/8 and wouldn't budge.
So I went back to the HH3, had an engineer visit and all was well once more.
Fast forward to yesterday. HH3 takes a nose dive. Don't believe it is PSU, but basically it switched off and won't come back on - it's looking rather broken.
So, I've still got my HH5 (Type A) in the draw and thought, well I do need fast broadband at home.
    So, to the questions.
Has the issue with the HH5 (which I had, many others had, BT said wasn't an issue etc.) now been fixed? I appreciate that I will have out of date firmware, however if I start to use it and I'm assuming the firmware will aitomatically update itself, will all the old dropped connection issues have gone away?
If not, is an acceptable option to use the HH5 togeother with my external VDSL modem? I remember this solving a lot of people's disconnection problems as it appeared to be an integrated modem issue in the HH5 and not using that seemed to solve all issues.
    Your advice greatly received.
    Thanks.

the firmware fix has for vast majority fixed the connection dropping problem of the hh5a  many chose to get modem and use that in conjunction with the hh5a and were happy with their choice as it stopped the conenction drops.  it also appeared to help connection in general
so you can try just leaving modem conencted and connect the hh5a to modem using hub wan port or you can conenct hub direct to master using the hub dsl socket

  • Ichat dropping out issue with Broadband Tuner?

    All,
I posted before when I was having this issue and Ralph suggested that since I had a FIOS connection and OS 10.3 I limit my bandwith to 100 in video preferences. That fix works(thanks Ralph), although my image is not as crisp.
Now I have 10.5.2 and downloaded the Broadband Tuner. Still have issue with Ichat just breaking down (running connection doctor show audio and video dropping off). I was wondering if I maybe need to do something else besides just install the Tuner? It came up with a successful install, but it seems like it is doing nothing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
I see it says not for Airports at the bottom
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/broadbandtuner10.html
I don't know if this effect you.
I am not sure where to look on a Mac to find out if it is working or not.
I would recheck the Bandwidth option in iChat to see which works best for your try anything up to 500kbps.
Do you know if your Connection speed is varying greatly ?
This is the normal issue with FiOS.

  • Anyone else having wifi drop out issues with their iPad 3?

Right from the word 'go' I have experienced frequent losses in wifi connectivity on my iPad 3 (64Gb, 4G). Fortunately I don't have to keep re-entering my wifi password but I do have to keep renewing the lease which is really tedious.  My iPad 2 works flawlessly on the same network (Netgear cable modem/router from Virginmedia).  I also have an iPod Touch and an iPhone that also work without issues on this set up.  Thus far I have tried:
    Rebooting the modem
    Restoring the iPad 3
Resetting the network settings on the iPad 3
Changing the channel on the router from 'auto' to various other channels
Switching between WPA and WEP encryption on the router
Turning off the auto brightness (a tip I saw that worked on some of the earlier iPads)
None of the above have helped and after three calls to Apple support I have received a replacement iPad 3 which has exactly the same problem?  People talk about replacing one's router as a potential solution but my options are limited because this is a combination cable unit supplied by Virginmedia.  Also, the issue points pretty clearly to the iPad 3 because, as I mention, my other Apple products work flawlessly.  I'm going abroad shortly and I'm thinking of leaving the iPad 3 at home if I can't sort out its wifi capabilities.
    Any ideas?

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.
If none of the above suggestions work, look at this link.

  • AirPort Express drop-out / skips -- Windows XPSP2 w/ Linksys WRT54GS router

    Hello,
I'm having some skipping / drop-out issues when streaming music from a Windows XPSP2 fileserver, which runs iTunes 7.3.2.6, to my AirPort Express. I've long suspected my LinkSys WRT54GS router. Here are some things I've tried:
    * tried enabling logging on my AirPort Express unit, (I actually installed a Windows SysLog client and ensured it was working) but it reveals no useful information after a skip -- just debug logging. No change.
    * changed the wireless channel from 6 to 11. No change.
    * Do not have wireless security enabled (just don't broadcast ESS ID). No change.
    * Latest firmware on router, AirPort Express, and iTunes. No change.
    * All other wireless devices in the house turned off. No change.
I'm seriously considering buying a new wireless DSL router to see if it makes the problem go away (any suggestions to makes or models appreciated). Unfortunately my WRT54GS is not one of the routers that supports reflashing with a third-party firmware, or I would have done this eons ago.
Another thing I am not sure how to test is the signal strength that the Airport Express gets from my LinkSys WRT54GS router. I've not been able to figure out how to get this information, and I also do not know what are considered good / not-good strengths. Any help here would be great.
    Here are some details.
AirPort Express with Firmware 6.3, communicating wirelessly over Channel 11 to my LinkSys WRT54GS router with firmware 1.52.0, into which my Windows XPSP2 fileserver is physically connected with CAT5 cable. The music files are served up on a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 7200 rpm 300GB Serial ATA-150 Hard Drive.
I've really tried everything I can think of, and I still get skipping.
Specifically, music will play fine for 45 minutes, or 5 minutes, or an hour; then, the music will suddenly stop. The AirPort Express will continue to have its green LED on, though. The music will resume 1-10 seconds later. This skipping will happen periodically for a 1-2 minute period, usually 2-3 times per minute, go away for an indeterminate amount of time; or, it might persist until I get tired and turn off my stereo. There is no pattern as to time of day so I don't suspect neighborly interference.
Other things in the house are an older 802.11b laptop, 5.8GHz phone, brand new microwave, and a few dozen Palm and Windows PDAs that all have their WiFis disabled, where appropriate.
Any suggestions or ideas would be fantastic. This has been a problem for a couple of years now which I have systematically (though unsuccessfully) tried to solve.
    Thanks,
    -Jeff

I haven't yet budgeted to buy a different router, but I'll respond when I do as to whether this was the fix or not.
Just an observation ... in your case, the music streams wirelessly from your laptop to your router, and then wirelessly again from the router to your Airport. That's 2 wireless paths it must go. In my case, music streams directly to my router with a LAN cable; then, wirelessly from my router to the airport. So that's only 1 wireless path, and even still I am experiencing problems.

  • Sky Fibre constant drop out and low speed

    Hi everyone,
Just recently switched provider from Plusnet fibre to Sky fibre and boy, has it been a stressful few days. First off, our fibre went live on the 6th of this month but these last couple of days I've been experiencing low speeds between 10-20 mb which I understand is meant to be normal (Never had this issue when I joined plusnet) and I have constant drop outs when I'm surfing the net or playing internet games on my Wii U
I've phoned Sky within the last two days and told them what's going on and they've done some tests on their end and they are telling me that I'm getting speeds up to 41 mb which I'm not getting, but they can't seem to understand why I keep having this drop out issue with my devices and my laptop and my gaming console. They have sent me a new hub, but I personally don't think sending out a new hub will make a difference. I've stuck a a Ethernet cable into my Sky fibre router and attached a openreach router, to the other end and see if that stops the drop out.
I'm inclined to leave sky, because I have a feeling this poor service will continue, unless someone can help me.
    Thanks

  • Slow wi-Fi internet connections and drop outs after MBP wakes up

    Hello,
I have the new MBP 17 and recurring issues with the Aiport/Internet connections with my TC 500 Dual Band:
After the MBP wakes from sleep mode, I have recurring drop outs with regard to my internet connection. Airport connection shows me the full 4 bars and tells me I am connected, but Safari loads internet pages to no avail. I then usually deactivate my airport for 5 seconds, then reactivate it. The connection usually is better after that, but I do still have drop out issues every so often.
    Anyone experiencing the same problem?
Would resetting SMC have any effect on this?
    Thanks

I've had a similar problem at home - it's been exasperating.
It appears to be not just one thing but a collection of things causing the problems. The recent firmware update combined with driver updates in 10.5.6+ is one thing, but also there are some keychain issues, waking from sleep issues and interference issues.
When the MBP firmware was updated (10.5.6 / 10.5.7) I can't be sure exactly I noticed that my wi-fi signal was effected much more by interference. I'm using b/g as I have iPhones on the same network as my MBP at home. I ruled out router issues by testing with various other machines (Macs and PC's) - and on different wi-fi networks (my office).
The other machines didn't suffer the same problems at home and my machine did suffer the same problem at work,
I have a feeling that the driver / firmware update combined with several Airport Passwords (for the same network) appearing in your keychain conspired together to create the issue. When the Airport Signal dropped below a certain strength (by sleeping or by moving to another room) and there is a lot of interference from other wi-fi networks - your machine fails to reconnect correctly to your wi-fi network.
Often your network doesn't even show up in the available network lists. When it does - the keychain issue appears to cause a network timeout when re-connecting and therefore the connection fails and you get stuck in an annoying loop.
Moving my MBP close to the wi-fi router causes is to re-connect - which is why I believe it is related to signal strength. Also using a n only network rather than b/g helps considerably (n suffers from less interference). This however is not a fix as I have an iphone (which requires b/g) and I like to use my MBP more than 3 meters away from my wi-fi router.
Also on identical machines in my office (10.5.6 and 10.5.7) I didn't have the problem. The only real difference was those machines didn't sync with .mac and share the same keychain. Further more testing some of those machines on my home network they had no problems.
I tried loads and loads of things to fix this. In the end it wasn't one thing that did it, but a whole series of them.
1 - Delete all your Airport Passwords from your keychain.
2 - Ensure that if you are using .mac syncing you replace the .mac keychain from your current machine.
3 - Trash all your network preferences (including network interfaces and remembered networks)
    4 - Zap your PRAM
    5 - Resent your SMC
    6 - Re-connect to your wi-fi network
And that appears to have worked for me. So far anyway.

  • My Apple TV drops out when my iMac isn't connected to wifi yet my TV is connected to wifi.  Also having issues with losing settings on Home Sharing as well.  How do I fix these issues?

Whether I'm watching a movie purchased via my Apple TV or a movie stored on my iTunes app on my iMac I'm having constant issues with Apple TV either cutting out (randomly - not related to wifi) or not being able to access the 'My Computer' files when my iMac drops out the wifi connection because its in power saving mode.  I also have issues with 'Home Sharing' settings having to be reset and sometimes having to unplug the Apple TV power cord and plugging it back in to be able to successfully reset these settings so I can get back to watching whatever it was I was viewing on Apple TV.  My TV is connected to wifi as well so I'm wondering if there are any changes I can make in the settings of both my Apple TV and iMac or TV so that I can just select whatever it is I want to watch and be able to watch the entire movie or episode without it dropping out or having to keep flicking the mouse on the iMac to keep the computer connected to wifi?  I love Apple products generally but Apple TV is proving to be a pain in the a**e lately.  Hopefully someone can help me sort these issues out

Intermittent issues will point to a local network/wifi issue.
Reboot ATV and router, make sure both are up to date
    Try ethernet
The home sharing connection will cut out if the iMac goes to sleep.

  • Broadband noise/ drop out/ speed issues

Am starting a new post because last one has become too long. See http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/Broadband-dropping-out-noise-high-speed-slow/m... if you would like the history.
Here is the summary.  Long distance from the exchange.  Noisy line.  Speed low.  I have tried all the usual things many times.  Broadband engineers have been out x3 recently and confirmed that they can't detect any problems inside my house, or with the line coming into my house - although my hub typically shows a high noise margin.  Nevertheless, engineer swapped my line onto a new cable in the cabinet yesterday because he couldn't think of anything else to try.  He also replaced my HH3.  This morning noise had been reset very low, line speed coming into the house was high (for me), I was happily waiting for IP profile to drift upwards.  The readings from this morning are in the link above.  It was all looking good.
And then this is what happens (and I think it may be exactly what's happened before).  Come about 5pm, at time of busy traffic, the line (I think, I'm not a techie) with low noise margin decides it can't cope.  It drops out.  I have to reset hub to get back on the internet.  It comes back with higher noise and slower downstream line speed.
Any ideas out there?  Please try and avoid the standard usual stuff because I've done it all before.  Readings to follow.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Here is what my hub was showing around 5pm when internet dropped out.  Notice very low noise.  Me thinking my line can't cope with that, hence drop out.  Me predicting line will come back with higher noise and slower downstream line speed.  Process will repeat over the next week until noise margin is incredibly high, speed is very low (that's my prediction anyway).  Here's the reading from when the line dropped out.

  • IPhone Signal Issues on Orange UK/Wi-Fi Dropping Out

I have noticed an issue with my iPhone 4 that seems to be unique to Orange/T-Mobile UK customers.
I'm sure you are all aware that Orange and T-Mobile customers in the UK can now share their respective networks which is all fine and dandy until there is an issue with one of their networks. Since November last year the Orange mast where I live has been down so I was told by Orange to manually log my iPhone onto the T-Mobile network as their mast was fine. However my iPhone still tries to pick up the Orange signal which is very weak so I get a lot of calls and connections dropping out.
Orange told me that my iPhone must be faulty so sent me off to my local Apple Store who told me that there was nothing wrong with my iPhone and that how it acted as even if I manually select a network it will carry on picking up any signal it can. Now as much as I love Apple that sounds like a load of bull to me, what's the point of having such an option on my phone if it doesn't actually do anything?!
Can anyone out there help or advise? Software Version is 5.1 (9B176) and Carrier is Orange UK 12.0
Also I have an issue where my iPhone keeps dropping the Wi-Fi connection. It's not a case where the network has been lost as it is still in the network list and I can immediately reselect it. The only way I can stop this from happening is by switching off the 3G and Mobile Data. Again the Apple Store say this is an issue with my Wi-Fi router (I am with Virgin Media and have a N Router) and say I should invest in an AirPort. The fact that i also have an iPad 2 and a PC which do not have these issues seem to have been lost on them. Again any help or advice you Guys can give would be appreciated

    hi banjo72.
as for the first part, there is nothing you can do,until orange sort out there mast, near your location.i know its a pain in the rear,i have low signal where i am and my orange logo, keeps jumping from orange and t-mobile like a yo-yo.once i am near a good signal it stays on orange.
    wi-fi connection issue.
you can try two things, first one is to go into settings-general-scroll down-reset-re-set network settings.
second thing to try is press the wi-fi reset button on your router.

  • AE and Computer- Audio dropping out and stuttering issues

    Hi all,
I recently bought an Airport Express 2 weeks ago. I hooked the unit up in my bedroom via ethernet(roaming) method.  I use Airplay and turn on Computer and Airport Express to play both in my living room and my bedroom at the same time. Problem is I'm noticing my iTunes in my living room exhibits some stuttering during songs or the audio will start to drop out intermittently and sometimes shuts off completely but the Airport Express is still playing in my bedroom without issue. I've tried turing off the wireless but it doesn't do anything. When I turn off AE in Airplay and just play using the Computer it works fine. I'm not sure what can be causing the interference but it seems its between my computer and AE when they are both turned on.  I would appreciate any suggestions forum members have to help me resolve this issue. I have the 2nd generation AE.  Thanks a lot.

    Hi Macthemini,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are experiencing issues with AirPlay between iTunes on a Mac mini and your AirPort Express. The following resource outlines troubleshooting issues for AirPlay performance:
iTunes: Troubleshooting AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203822
    Troubleshooting performance issues
    Wi-Fi Connection
If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your AirPlay-enabled device.
Ensure that other devices aren't trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.

  • Apple TV and Drop Outs, Connection Issues

I use AppleTV to mirror my ipad 2. it's great. Love it Then I'll try it again and it may work but often the icon disappears. I then clear the password then re-enter it and that will bring it back or if that doesn't work I may have to shut down my ipad 2 at least once.
This happens almost every second or third time I try to use it.
I currently have an iphone 4s, ipad2, ipod touch and as someone has said before, this is the first time I've been deeply disappointed in an Apple product. I expect glitches every now and then but this continual drop out and connection issues I have is beyond the joke.
Does anyone have any solutions. Yes I have done all the updates, yes I am on the same network, yes airplay is turned on, yes home sharing is enabled.
As you can see I am peeved!

I too am having the same problem. I have a MB Pro running OS X 10.9.4 cannot see AirPlay option. Any solutions out there? Tried AirParrot but it is spotty at best.

    Hello sstefanik
Check out the articles below to troubleshoot your issues with getting a proper connection with Wi-FI. Try creating a new Network Location and join your network to see if you can get on that way.

  • Is anybody having drop-out and dropped call issues?

    hi
i'm on my second 8gig iphone and am still having (after 2days) horrible drop-outs on almost every call and dropped calls. the signal is showing full strenght-4bars while this is happening. any ideas? my previous cell (blackberry on att) had perfect reception at all times at same location. drove through the neighborhood this afternoon and same thing. i areas where i used to get perfect reception i now get drop-outs.
    thx,
    mk

you are correct - hence my previous post that my att reception on my previous phone - a blackberry in exact same locations - was perfect. on the other hand i think this must be an isolated incident of bad luck receiving 2 phones in a row that have bad reception. i met at least 10 people at the apple store on friday night that live in my area (within 1/2 mile) and nobody has complained (so far) about reception issues and dropped calls.

  • Re: Broadband noise/ drop out/ speed issues

    Hi community.
I know this thread is old and probably closed but I would like to revive it.
I have exactly the same problem as MPR and any advice would be welcome.
I am a long way from the exchange, the line comes into my house overhead.  I reported intermittent line dropping weeks ago, spoke to several different people, all very polite, very caring, but not much use.
Several diagnosed fault on the line and said it would be fixed remotely.  One sent me a new home hub 2 to replace the one they diagnosed as faulty, though God knows how.
I kept saying that I suspected a physical fault with the line as a bundle of cables wired into a junction box (big black thing - looked like a toy from Anne Summers but never mind) was hanging down from one of the telegraph poles and the foil around the end where the wires went in lookd as if it was not fully weather-proof.
Eventually, last Friday, an engineer was sent round.  Checked inside the house, checked outside the house and said there was no problem with the line.  He detected noise which he suspected was causing the drop-out and said he would see if there was any water getting in anywhere which might cause this.
The hanging down thingy was secured better to the telegraph pole but I don't know if anything else was done.
Right away, same problem.  Intermittent orange flashing broadband light on the hub.  Occasionally no broadband light at all.  Usually needs to be re-set though sometimes comes back on its own.
If you have any advice I would be most appreciative.  This is costing me money as when my better half wanted to order something online, found a good price, put the details in and clicked "BUY", the line dropped.  By the time it came back up, the price had gone up £30.
Anyway, I'm calling them again tonight when I get home.  I would say "no more Mr Nice Guy" but that doesn't get you anywhere does it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear that your having problems with your BT Broadband.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
A summary of the checks are:
1a) Is your router/Homehub connected by a BT NTE5 master socket, Adsl Filtered Master Socket or Extension Socket?   Please bear in mind that extension cables and extension sockets can reduce the broadband's performance. If you have an Old LJU master socket then please say.
1b) Have you tried the Test Socket?
    2) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] If the other link doesn't work you can try http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
    3) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
    4) please post adsl line statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
    1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
    2) click Settings
    3) Click Advanced Settings
    4) Click Broadband
    5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link
    Don't have a BT Homehub/Voyager?
    • http://192.168.0.1 for a netgear router and look for ADSL adsl statistics with information like noise margin and line attenuation, connection speed
