ORA 01840 error

So much has been written about this error and I have followed some of the suggestions:
Here's the problem:
Field in the database is recvddate and the datatype is varchar2(10)
When I write the following procedure and pass the date parameter, I get the error:
ORA-01840: input value not long enough for date format
CREATE OR REPLACE Procedure test55
( startdate IN varchar2,
enddate IN varchar2)
AS
BEGIN
SELECT col1, col2
FROM table1
WHERE recvddate
BETWEEN to_date( &startdate, 'yyyy-mm-dd')
AND to_date(&enddate,'yyyy-mm-dd');
END;
This is how I pass the parameters:
Enter value for startdate: 2007-01-02
Enter value for enddate: 2007-01-29
Thanks a lot

Put a single quote around the Date and it should work.
You may need to modify your procedure as "SELECT col1, col2 " should be defined.
Wrote file afiedt.buf
1 CREATE OR REPLACE Procedure test55
2 ( startdate IN varchar2,
3 enddate IN varchar2)
4 AS
5 l_num NUMBER(2);
6 BEGIN
7 SELECT COUNT(*) INTO L_num
8 FROM t1
9 WHERE recvddate
10 BETWEEN to_date( &startdate, 'yyyy-mm-dd')
11 AND to_date(&enddate,'yyyy-mm-dd');
12* END;
SQL> /
Enter value for startdate: '2007-01-02'
old 10: BETWEEN to_date( &startdate, 'yyyy-mm-dd')
new 10: BETWEEN to_date( '2007-01-02', 'yyyy-mm-dd')
Enter value for enddate: '2007-01-02'
old 11: AND to_date(&enddate,'yyyy-mm-dd');
new 11: AND to_date('2007-01-02','yyyy-mm-dd');
Procedure created.

  • ORA-01840 error on inserting row trough object browser

    Dear Oracle Community,
    I'm getting the ORA-01840: Input value not long enough for date format error when I try to insert a row with the date value 24-MAY-10 with my object browser.
    This is the problem column:
    Column Name | Data Type| Nullable| Default | Primary Key
    SIGNUPDATE |DATE |No | - | -
    Now this will look like I'm using the wrong date format so I have googled and found that I should use the following query to check for the correct date format my database uses.
    select * from nls_session_parameters where parameter = 'NLS_DATE_FORMAT';
    This returns the DD-MON-RR format so I think I'm inserting the correct date format here.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I have already tried inserting with the following formats and tried replacing the - sign with the / sign.
    DD-MON-RR
    DD-MON-YY
    DD-MON-YYYY
    I have also tried using the SYSDATE is in the DD-MON-RR format trough the SQL commandline.
    I'm feeling like an idiot this should be simple right?
    Please help me out here this is frustrating, many thanks in advance.
    J Nijman

    using the SYSDATE is in the DD-MON-RR format trough the SQL commandlineIn sqlplus try:
    insert into <tablename> ( <date columnname> [, ... ] ) values ( sysdate [, ...] );
    To get a sysdate date value added. Or specify the format string with a to_date expression:
    insert into <tablename> ( <date columnname> [, ... ] ) values ( to_date( '24-may-10', 'dd-mon-yy') [, ... ] );
    The engine isn't picky about separators agreeing with the format string, most any character in place of the '-' dash is acceptable.
    Now to get an ora-1840 out of the object browser (Table/Data/Insert Row), I'm not having any luck trying to duplicate that. With the default nls_date_format 'DD-MON-YY' even trying bad dates (i.e. 30-feb-10 or 30-feb-2010, or even 31-apr-10) it either does an ora-1839: date not valid for month specified, or with a four digit year it gives an ora-1830: date format picture ends before converting entire input string.
    Any RDBMS presents programmers with date and datetime challenges, its not just an oracle-frustration thing ;)

  • ORA 01840 SELECT INTO

    HI,
    Would someone please look at this code? For all the changes I made it still returns the same error above. If I can not use the TYPE TABLE ... would be great. The select statement is going return several values with the same date (sysdate-1). I am only interested in getting a distinct value of this but I used that word and it screamed. So as far as I can see I have to capture all of them then do a select distinct on the table type to get my answer. Any suggestions in re writing the code as necessary is appreciated.
    This is another block of the continuing drama.

    So, you basically want to verify that at least one row exists in the table named dba_optstat_operations, with yesterday's date? Something like this should work (no need for any bulk operations):
    Note: untested code ahead!
    declare
      l_dummy pls_integer;
    begin
      select 1 into l_dummy from dual
      where exists (select 1 from dba_optstat_operations

  • Ora-01008 error with bind variable

    Hi,
    We have a test program which have one bind variable on a column which is varchar2(20), in the test program we've passed a 20 character string to the variable. The program returns error in one of the databases but all others are successful. We've checked the column is same in all of them.
    Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1

    Could you please advise how to troubleshoot this issue?
    Regards

    We aren't going to be able to help you if you won't post the database code that is giving the error.
    And now we need the Java code that is constructing the query that you are using.
    Your error is saying there is a second variable that you are not providing a value for.
    And you said
    >
    We have a test program which have one bind variable on a column which is varchar2(20), in the test program we've passed a 20 character string to the variable.
    >
    But you are using a string that is 23 characters long

    ORA-24381: error(s) in array DML
    Cause: One or more rows failed in the DML.indicates that you fail on the insert itself. Are the table definitions the same? Same primary/unique keys?

    PL/SQL: ORA-04052: error occurred when looking up remote object UPLDUSER.filestatushistory@FTS
    ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
    ORA-03106: fatal two-task communication protocol error
    ORA-02063: preceding line from FTSStatement
    declare
    v_coun number;
    begin
    select count(*) into v_coun
    from updluser.filestatushistory@fts;
    end;Back ground of the situation as follows,
    My DataBase version 10.2.0.3 DB Name :DB1
    Table Owner : UPLDUSER
    Table Name : FILESTATUSHISTORY
    I have a report user on the same database and I have grant all on the above table to report user
    Report User : RPT_FTS
    SQL> GRANT ALL ON FILESTATUSHISTORY_V TO RPT_FTS;Now Please find the below database details where I'm getting subjected error.
    Database version : 9.2.0.8
    DB Name : DB2
    User Name : RPT_REPORTS
    I Have create a dblink from RPT_REPORTS to RPT_FTS on DB1 and the dblink works fine. But getting the above error while running it.
    but When I do the same other 10.2.0.3 db , the above PL/SQL block works fine without any problem.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Now the strange about this is that I have Created a new table on DB1 db like below;
    SQL> CREATE TABLE UPLDUSER.ABC AS SELECT * FROM FILESTATUSHISTORY;and retry my code on DB2 (9.2.0.8) after changing the table to ABC and it worked. Now I don't know whats wrong with a original table(FILESTATUSHISTORY).
    To over come the problem and a work-a-round method I create a view on the DB1 (RPT_FTS) like the below
    SQL> CREATE VIEW FILESTATUSHISTORY AS SELECT * FROM UPLDUSER.FILESTATUSHISTORY;and was able to run the PL/SQL block Remotely.
    Just wants To know what whould have been the cause for this .
    Cheers
    Kanchana

    Hi Kanchana,
    Perhaps following link of google search has answer to your query
    ORA-04052. The search result contains some useful articles whose URLs I shan't post in the forums.
    HTH!

    Hi,
    Please check the timezone set in your server where Weblogic is installed. Also ensure the timezone on which your weblogic is running, the same is present in in database by querying V$TIMEZONE_NAMES table. If it is not present then please change the timezone of the server. then try to execute the steps what you are doing, it will not throw any error.
    if this helps please mark.
    Thanks,
    Kishore

    I had a simular problem with progress. If the progress table had to many columns
    OWB was failing. The problem was the ODBC driver used to make a connection to PROGRESS.
