ORA-03113 end-of-communication channel (Oracle8.1.6, Powerbuilder)

I have an Oracle server 8.1.6 sitting in California.
There's a group in Cleveland accessing our Oracle server (directly to the IP address) through several different applications (Crystal Reports v.8, Powerbuilder application v.7).
Regardless of what they use, they are constantly getting the ORA-03113 error after about 5 minutes of inactivity.
They do not have any problems connecting to Oracle, it's only after some minutes of inactivity.
In california however we never get this ORA-03113 problem (using same Oracle database, same Powerbuilder application etc).
I don't know if this is useful but here's what the database profile in Powerbuilder looks like:
[Database]
DBMS=O84 ORACLE 8.0.4
ServerName=DB_ORACLE
Database=DB_ORACLE
UserID=
DatabasePassword=
LogId=login
LogPassword=passwd
DbParm=
Thanks for any help.
Tina

The ORA-03113 indicates that either the client or the server has taken some action to close an active connection. This most commonly occurs when a query exceeds a time threshold and is cancelled by the ODBC driver. By default, ODBC doesn't impose a statement timeout, but many applications which use ODBC do. From your post, however, I'm not sure this is a plausible explanation for your problem... When you say "5 minutes of inactivity", are you referring to the application being completely idle for 5 minutes or are you referring to the application chugging on a query for 5 minutes and then generating the error?
Depending on how the network is configured, it may be that the Oracle server is erroneously determining that the Cleveland connections have been abandoned. I have no idea what the mechanics of this would be-- I'm just assuming that such a capability must exist, and guessing that it might have problems with connections where there's a high latency or network wierdness. You might try disabling connection pooling for the Oracle ODBC driver (in the ODBC Data Source Administrator). That will force ODBC to create new connections to the database, rather than holding on to old connections for reuse. If it works, there will likely be a performance hit because of this.

  • ORA-03113 END OF COMMUNICATION CHANNEL

    Iam trying to install 0racle 8.1.7 on an NT server machine with SP6a.During the installation while the database is created I get the following error:
    ORA0-03113 end of communication channel.
    I have performed the installation (after unistalling, cleaning the registry ) 3 times and even have taken the machine off the network, but the same error occurs.
    I have installed 8.1.7 on another machine and never had this problem.
    Any ideas what is happenning?
    Thanks in advance

    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    I saw this when running the "Database Configuration Assistant" and "sqlplus". When the "Database Configuration Assistant" gave me this error during Oracle 9i (9.2.0) installation on Red Hat 2.1 AS, I simply removed the shared memory segments owned
    by the Oracle user and I restarted the "Database Configuration Assistant". I'm not sure if this is the right way but it always worked for me. Here is what I did to get the "Database Configuration Assistant" running again:
    I executed the ipcs command to get the address of the shared memory segments that have been allocated by Oracle:
    # ipcs
    ------ Shared Memory Segments --------
    key shmid owner perms bytes nattch status
    0x00000000 0 root 600 196608 2
    0x00000001 32769 root 600 655360 2
    0x00000000 458755 oracle 660 4194304 0
    0x00000000 491524 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 524293 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 557062 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 589831 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 622600 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 655369 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x00000000 688138 oracle 660 33554432 0
    0x3ecee0b0 720907 oracle 660 4194304 0
    ------ Semaphore Arrays --------
    key semid owner perms nsems status
    ------ Message Queues --------
    key msqid owner perms used-bytes messages
    Then I removed all shared memory segments that were owned by the Oracle user during the installation with the following command:
    # ipcrm shm 458755 491524 524293 557062 589831 622600 655369 688138 720907
    After that I restarted the "Database Configuration Assistant". Once the installation was done I immediately restarted the DB as well.
    Caveat: I'm not sure if this procedure can cause any other problems if it's done during the installation.
    But if you get this problem in connection with sqlplus, then simply make sure that the database is down and exit sqlplus. After that, follow the procedure above by removing all shared memory segments that belong to the Oracle user. To my knowledge,
    this should not cause any problems.

  • Problem with ORA -03113 End of Communication Channel

    Hello,
    Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
    Windows Server 2003 Version V5.2 Service Pack 2
    Im having this problem when executing an stored procedure that executes a SQL statement wich has uses db links... I get this end of communication channel error.. so I thought it was a network issue, but all connections are fine.
    The thing is that the procedure works fine, but just out of the nothing starts to give that problem, shutting down the database would not correct the problem, only restarting the server will fix the issue temporarily. I checked the dump file related to the process am running and I found this, I think it might be like a memory problem but not sure

    what do you recommend me to try here?

    Hi Ogan,
    I agree ! Of course we are often obliged to compose with minimal downtime, testing resources, editors, management, time etc.
    I have the same problems but keeping the base version is a pain and if you consider 10.2.0.5 you won't have to install many patchsets after this one on the 10gR2 homes/databases. It's a "good" investment if you have to keep the 10gR2 for several years (going to 11g is more difficult than installing a patchset !)
    Oracle patchsets are great and well tested and if you pay your Oracle license you pay for that ! The patchsets, patchset updates, support make the difference with the versions you can download "freely" on OTN.
    Best regards
    Phil

  • ORA-03113 End of communication channgel

    It's strange one particular sql statement is causing the issues. It's going across link on one table ( PS_RNA_FO_CONTACT ), which is a link to another database from HR.
    Below is the statement comes back with ORA-03113 with end of comminication channel with a core dump creating in the database, if we run in toad or sqlplus.
    SELECT A.FIRST_NAME || ' ' || A.LAST_NAME ,C.FIRST_NAME || ' ' || C.LAST_NAME ,A.JOBTITLE ,B.NAME1 ,A.STATE ,( SELECT URL FROM PSURLDEFN WHERE URL_ID= 'RNA_HRS_ONBRD_VIDEO') AS URL FROM sysadm.PS_RNA_OB_INVITE A ,PS_CUSTOMER B ,sysadm.PS_RNA_FO_CONTACT C WHERE A.RNA_OB_INVITN_ID=:1 AND B.SETID='SHARE' AND B.CUST_ID=A.CUST_ID AND C.SETID=B.SETID AND C.CONTACT_ID=A.CONTACT_ID AND C.EFFDT=( SELECT MAX(Z.EFFDT) FROM sysadm.PS_RNA_FO_CONTACT Z WHERE C.SETID=Z.SETID AND C.CONTACT_ID=Z.CONTACT_ID)
    I dropped the database link, synonym and recreated it, still no success but,
    the following work arounds work fine.
    1. If I create a view on the same table and use the view comes back fine fine.
    2. If bind variable is hard coded with some value, query returns
    3. If SELECT URL FROM PSURLDEFN WHERE URL_ID= 'RNA_HRS_ONBRD_VIDEO' is taken out of the select and joined in the where clause works fine, but that would bring cartesian product as there is no joining key.
    I opened up a case with Oracle, but if any body can shed some light, will be helpful.

    It will almost certainly be a bug.
    On one of the databases you should have an alert log entry detailing a trace file which will have further information related probably to an underlying ORA-00600 or ORA-07445.
    The additional information in the trace file can be used in the Oracle Support online ORA-00600/07445 lookup tool.

  • ORA-03113 : end-of-file on communication channel while running a SQL Query

    Hi,
    While executing the following query, we are facing ORA-03113 : EOF on communication channel error.
    SELECT
    FROM QDF_CLSS_SHENG_HIST
    /*WHERE* a.FACT_TYPE_CODE='BS'
    AND */
    WHERE (SRCE_SYS_ID = 850 OR (SRCE_SYS_ID IN (1747,1764) AND GEO_ID IN (826,372) AND PRTTN_BY_FUNC_DATE>=to_date('20060701','YYYYMMDD') ))
    When we remove one of the values in the SRCE_SYS_ID's 'IN' condition the error is not thrown, e.g.
    WHERE (SRCE_SYS_ID = 850 OR (SRCE_SYS_ID IN (1747) AND GEO_ID IN (826,372) AND PRTTN_BY_FUNC_DATE>=to_date('20060701','YYYYMMDD') ))
    The version of the Database we are using is 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bi. Is this a common error in this version of the database because when we ran the same query in a 9i database we got no such error.
    P.S : QDF_CLSS_SHENG_HIST table is partitioned on SRCE_SYS_ID and PRTTN_BY_FUNC_DATE
    Thanks,

    Yes, we get the same error and no dumps are getting created.It might be interesting to look at a trace file for this SQL statement with event 10046 at level 12 and event 10053 at level 1 enabled for the session. You may need to modify the query slightly to make certain that a hard parse is required (possibly by specifying a couple of the column names to be returned rather than *). Take a look through the raw trace file for something like this

  • ORA-03113 end-of-file on channel communication

    Hello at everyone:
    I have a laptop pentium 133 MMX, 40 MB Ram, 2.1 GB.
    I have been installed slackware 3.5, kernel 2.0.36, on it and
    oracle 8 too.
    I run svrmgrl, connect internal, everithing go well, but when
    write the command "startup nomount" <ENTER>, oracle begin to work
    and 2 seconds after, more or less, appear the message of the
    subject.
    I found the possibly means of this:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    Cause: An unexpected end-of-file was processed on the
    communication channel. The problem could not be handled by the
    Net8, two task, software. This message could occur if the shadow
    two-task process associated with a Net8 connect has terminated
    abnormally, or if there is a physical failure of the interprocess
    communication vehicle, that is, the network or server machine
    went down.
    Action: If this message occurs during a connection attempt, check
    the setup files for the appropriate Net8 driver and confirm Net8
    software is correctly installed on the server. If the message
    occurs after a connection is well established, and the error is
    not due to a physical failure, check if a trace file was
    generated on the server at failure time. Existence of a trace
    file may suggest an Oracle internal error that requires the
    assistance of customer support.
    ------------------------------------------<^
    This possibility, above |, i guess that not apply, because, i
    work in any network, everything is local.
    ------------------------------------------<ORA-3113: end of file communication channel
    Cause: An unexpected end-of-file was processed on the
    communication channel. The TCP/IP retransmission count on Win
    NT/95 has a default value of 5. This means that the send side
    retransmits the packet five times or until it gets an
    acknowledgment. The timeout for each retransmission is two times
    the timeout for the previous retransmission (exponential
    backoff). With the default value of 5, the send side retransmits
    5 times (approximately. 15 seconds) and if it does not get an
    acknowledgment. it assumes that the other side is down and closes
    the connection. If the link goes down for a minute or two the
    Net8 client receives this error.
    Action: Modify the retransmission count.
    Please see your Microsoft specific operating system manual for
    more information on tuning the microsoft TCP/IP software.
    ----------------------------------------------<I got it from Oracle 8 documentation for W95/NT. I guess that it
    is a good posibility. But how can to modify the retransmission

  • Help need for "ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel" on startup

    Hi everyone,
    After install the oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris 2.7, I can not start the oracle server, below is the problem I got,
    $ ./svrmgrl

    : SVRMGR> connect internal
    : Password: oracle
    : Connected.
    : SVRMGR> startup
    : ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    Can someone tell me what is wrong with my
    oracle server? Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
    the answer is simple. check first if TWO_TASK parameter is set to value from Ur tnsnames.ora. usually this environment variable must not be set for servers, only for client side. that means try 'unset TWO_TASK' and then should work.
    best regards,
    nicky

  • Convrtd to Invterval Part- ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

    Hi all,
    I had a table as Interval Partitioned. In order to create XML- Xpath indexes on it, I converted it to Range Partitioned table.
    I am able to create the XPATH indexes but I get the error: ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    - When I revert the code to Interval Partitioned without the XMLIndex, it works fine(although takes time as no XML Index)
    - When I convert table to non partitioned table, create the XML Index, it works fine.
    But I need the partitons, so when I create the partitioned table I get the error.
    CREATE TABLE INT_PART_TABLE
    DB_ID VARCHAR2(10 BYTE),
    xML_mESSAGE SYS.XMLTYPE,
    LOAD_TIMESTAMP TIMESTAMP(6)
    XMLTYPE xML_mESSAGE STORE AS BINARY XML
    PARTITION BY RANGE (LOAD_TIMESTAMP)
    PARTITION MAX VALUES LESS THAN (TIMESTAMP' 2013-06-01 00:00:00')
    TABLESPACE CSTR_STG_DATA

    NOCACHE
    ENABLE ROW MOVEMENT;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_XMLINDEX.dropparameter('Indx_Par');
    END;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_XMLINDEX.REGISTERPARAMETER(
    'Indx_Par',

    end;
    create index INDX_XPATHS on "INT_PART_TABLE" (XML_MESSAGE) indextype is xdb.xmlindex
    parameters ('PARAM Indx_Par') local;
    Now if I execute the following statement in
    SELECT T.xML_mESSAGE
    FROM INT_PART_TABLE1 T
    WHERE XMLEXISTS (
    declare namespace abc="ABCD";
    declare namespacedef="DEFG";
    declare namespace xyz="XYZA";
    let $tt as xs:boolean := fn:exists($p/main/id = ("144283","9085802")])
    return if ($tt) then true()
    else ()'
    PASSING T.xML_mESSAGE AS "p");
    - Is there any other way of writing this Select statement, which may work?
    - Any other thing I need to take care of when defining the table and partitions script so that I don't get this error?

    Hi,
    I think it's time you give a clear (and working) test case so that we can safely try to reproduce the issue.
    What you've given so far has syntax error and name mismatch.
    So please :
    - database version (SELECT * FROM v$version)
    - complete sequence of DLLs
    - some sample XML documents (it doesn't have to be the real ones, but at least something realistic)
    Thanks in advance.
    declare namespace abc="ABCD";
    declare namespacedef="DEFG";
    declare namespace xyz="XYZA";
    let $tt as xs:boolean := fn:exists($p/main/id = ("144283","9085802")])
    return if ($tt) then true()
    else ()'Why all that stuff? You don't have to return a boolean.

  • Error ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel in droppping  a table

    Good evening,
    I am very new on Oracle and I have a problem with some tables. Without any reason, apparently, I can't drop some of my table. Oracle gives me this error:

    What I should have to do?
    It is very important.

  • ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel while executing a query

    Hi all,
    I am getting following error while executing one of the query.
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    The query involves subqueries. At one point, in the second last condition of the whole query is the cause. what makes the query to disconnect from database.
    I am pasting the whole query with highlighted part causing the error.

    where
    Num_Employee_Id=D.Num_Employee_Id
    and D.Num_Employee_Id=B.Num_Employee_Id
    and B.Num_New_Office_Id=1
    order by
    A.Str_First_Name,
    A.Str_Middle_Name,
    A.Str_Last_Name
    Awaiting your valuable suggestions.
    Regards
    Vijay Kumar

    I would start by compareing the explain plan of both versions of the statement.
    Also by adding such a restriction you might change from an uncorrelated subquery to a correlated subquery. I'm not sure, because your code is hardly readably without formatting.
    In any case you seem to select again and again from the same table. Maybe you should find a way to optimize to query in terms of io (less table access). Then this problem could go away.

    Hi,
    Looks like your archivelog space is exhausted. Increase the db_recovery_file_dest_size size and check.
    SQL>  show parameter db_recovery
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    db_recovery_file_dest                string      /oracle/flash_recovery_area

  • ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel while running utlrp.sql

    Hi All,
    I am getting ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel while running utlrp.sql.
    Actually I ran utlrp.sql before in my test database and terminated the session in middle after that when ever I am running utlrp.sql i am getting the above error.
    how to resolve the issue.
    Kiran

    Hi,
    Check as follows;
    select owner,object_name,object_type from dba_objects where object_name like
    'UTL%'The objects should only belong to SYS, if they do belong do some other user (example HR, etc). Drop objects belong to other users (not sys).
    Then connect as sys as sysdba and rerun the script utlrp.sql.

  • Context Index World Lexer ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

    I have release 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.2.0) for Windows and trying to take advantage of the World Lexer.
    My table is:
    create table worldtest(
    filename char(32),
    content blob
    I've created a preference for the WORLD_LEXER:
         begin
         ctx_ddl.create_preference('wlex', 'WORLD_LEXER');
         end;
    Right now I'm working with 10,000 records of PDF, MS-Word, Text, and HTM documents. When I try and create a context index using this lexer:
    create index i_ctx_wc on worldtest(content)
    indextype is ctxsys.context
    parameters ('lexer wlex');
    The following error is returned, and I have to use drop index force to remove the index. Without 'Force' a message is return saying the index is an a loading state, but nothing is occuring.
    create index i_ctx_wc on worldtest(content)
    indextype is ctxsys.context
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    The indexing works fine when I leave the world lexer preference out.
    Any suggestions would be wonderful. I've been banging my head on this one for a while.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I couldn't reproduce (different version which is perhaps the problem). Check out bug 4056162. ORA-3113 related to the use of the world lexer. The resolution is not published externally, so no help there, but the bug is closed so perhaps support can provide some insight.
    Thanks.
