ORA-12514  9i Database 10G IAS Issue

Hi Friends,
We have installed 10G IAS infrastructure and applicaiton server. Our custom application is migrated and deployed on the 10G app server.
The database is on a seperate server and is still 9i.
When we try to connect to the database from the app server, we get the
ORA-12514: TNS: listener does not currently konw of service requested in connect descriptor.
How can we fix this.
Is it ok to connect to 9i database from 10 app server application.
Thanks and Regards.

Thank you. This is resolved.

  • 10g Installation and Error : ORA-12514 : Listerner cant recog. service requ

    Hi,
I installed 10g, and trying to start sql plus. I entered
    username: orcl
    password: my own password
host string: name of my computer
I am getting the error: ORA-12514: TNS: Listener does not currently know of service orequested in connect descriptor.
I started the services and tried again but same problem.
I also tried system and sysman as username, w/o a password and included my computer name, but still facing the same problem.
Any thing else I should do besides uninstalling and reinstalling ?
    Thanks

Where did the user name orcl come from? It certainly is not going to be there unless you logged in with a DBA account and created it: Did you?
So back to basics ... what version of Oracle did you install? 10g is a marketing label not a version number. It is likely something between 10.1.0.2 and 10.2.0.4.
Second how did you install the database? With the Oracle Universal Installer or with a script? Were there any error messages?
Have you checked the installation log?
Has it ever worked in the past and is now broken or has it never worked?
Is the listener running? How did you check?
When you say "I started the service" you are in what operating system and you started what service and how?
My guess, and it is only a wild guess given how little information you provided, is that there is an issue in your listener.ora and/or tnsnames.ora files: Post them along with the value you are entering as "Host" when you try to log in.
Again just a guess ... the user name should be SYSTEM, the password whatever you entered, and the Host "orcl."

The approach I would take, in general is:
    1) pick a listener, and only one. Get that working.
    2) Make sure all the databases register to that listener
    3) Fix the TNSNAMES.ORA files appropriately.
    To fix the listener
    1) Verify the listener address matches the current environment
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server)
          (PROGRAM = extproc)
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = CLRExtProc)
          (ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server)     << - MUST point to correct HOME
          (PROGRAM = extproc)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
      )where
myHOST is this host's resolvable name or IP address
myPORT is the port (default 1521) that the listener should monitor
The HOST is often a problem if the machine uses DHCP.
    2) Register the databases
On startup, database will auto-register to the listener defined in the init parameter 'LOCAL_LISTENER', which defaults to 'HOST={current_host}, PORT=1521'
After startup, if the listener is taken down, you can register each database manually using the DBA command
    ALTER SYSTEM REGISTER;
Either way, it should show up in the output of 'lsnrctl status'
While you are accessing the database, you might want to find out which services the database supports. That can be done in SQLPlus using the command
    SHOW PARAMETER SERVICE_NAMES
Note that the database name is the default service name.
    3) Fix [all] the TNSNAMES.ORA file[s].
Each SERVICE_NAME from the previous list that you want to access from this client, yu should find an entry that looks like
    myTEST =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myHOST)(PORT = myPORT))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = mySERVICE)
myTEST is the alias I want to look up by using it as the connect target string.
myHOST should match the HOST= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
myPORT MUST match the PORT= entry in the LISTENER.ORA
mySERVICE is the Service to which I am asking the listener to connect me, as found in the lsnrctl status output

  • 10g XE, ORA-12514 TNS Listener does not currently know of service req...

    Hi,
I have an Oracle XE installan. After booting and trying to connect to the Oracle 10g XE database, then on and off I encounter ORA-12514 error. Did someone experience a similar issue? As far as I know
    Regards,
    Tamas

    Hi Tamas Szecsy!
I encountered a bug that looks similar to yours using Fedora 10 and Oracle XE. The problem has been that the DB hadn't registered its self by listener. After a "lsnrctl status" I saw that the listener didn't know the service XE. I did an "ALTER SYSTEM REGISTER" in SQL*Plus and the problem was solved for this time. I had to do the register each time I did a shutdown and startup.
    Hope that helps!
    yours sincerely

  • Oracle 10g XE: ORA 12514: TNS ...

    Hello,
I installed "Oracle 10g XE Database" in a Windows 2003 Server platform.
Sometimes, when I restart the machine, database gives me the following error:
ORA 12514:TNS:IL LISTENER NON è ATTUALMENTE A CONOSCENZA DEL SERVIZIO RICHIESTO NEL DESCRITTORE DI CONNESSIONE.
DESCRIPTION: AN UNHANDLED EXCEPTION OCCURRED DURING THE EXECUTION OF THE CURRENT WEB REQUEST. PLEASE REVIEW THE STOCK TRACE FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE ERROR AND WHERE IT
    ORIGINATED IN THE CODE.
EXCEPTION DETAILS: ORACLE DATA ACCESS.CLINT.ORACLE EXCEPTION: ORA 12514:TNS: IL LISTENER NON è ATTUALMENTE A CONOSCENZA DEL SERVIZIO RICHIESTO NEL DESCRITTORE DI CONNESSIONE.
I can solve it restarting "OracleServiceXE" and "OracleXETNSListener".
My colleagues cannot resolve this problem and they had to install Oracle 9i.
It is all ok with Microsoft XP Professional.
Is there any patch available to solve this problem with Microsoft Windows Server 2003?
    Thank you very much.
    Massimiliano

it seems not to be a bug but a configuration issue.
12514, 00000, "TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
// *Cause:  The listener received a request to establish a connection to a
// database or other service. The connect descriptor received by the listener
// specified a service name for a service (usually a database service)
// that either has not yet dynamically registered with the listener or has
// not been statically configured for the listener. This may be a temporary
// condition such as after the listener has started, but before the database
// instance has registered with the listener.
    // *Action:
// - Wait a moment and try to connect a second time.
// - Check which services are currently known by the listener by executing:
    // lsnrctl services <listener name>
// - Check that the SERVICE_NAME parameter in the connect descriptor of the
// net service name used specifies a service known by the listener.
// - If an easy connect naming connect identifier was used, check that
// the service name specified is a service known by the listener.
// - Check for an event in the listener.log file.

The error basically means that the connection service which you are requeting in your connection string is not yet to known to the listener of yours. See here the output of the listener's supported services from your post.

It clearly shows that the listener is only working to listen for the PLSExtproc service which is meant for external procedures.
Is the database just started? If that's the case than it may take a while to get the PMON register the db with the listener. Or you can issue,
alter system register from your db's sql prompt which can ask listener for immediately register the db with it. Try this command and post feedback. If that won't work than you may have to manualy register your db with the listener.

  • Important--Bug(ORA-22813) fixes in Oracle Database 10g  Release 10.2.0.4

    Hi,
I found that in SELECT STATEMENTs where we use "xmlagg() functions with a GROUP BY/ORDER BY,it fails with ORA-22813 if the result is too large.
This happens as there is a hard coded limit on the result size. (max 30k)
Next,i confirmed that and when i removed a portion of the XML agg() values and executed it---Wonders,it runs perfectly fine.
This means that ""xmlagg() functions with a GROUP BY/ORDER BY,fails with ORA-22813 since the result is too large.
I have come to know that patch "Release 10.2.0.4" has the fix for Bug-22813 for "xmlagg() functions with a GROUP BY/ORDER BY".
Could you all please confirm that "Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.4" (patch 10.2.04) fixes the issue?
Based on your confirmation,i can go ahead to get the patch installed.
    Current Version:-Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bi

Your query should be written something like this..
    select d.*

           XMLTABLE
              '//c3'
              passing XMLRECORD
              columns
              C3_VALUE varchar2(60) path 'text()'

  • Connecting to Oracle XE via regular 10g client - ORA-12514

I have had the 10g client installled on my computer for a while, for developing against our company Oracle databases. I have now installed the XE database locally on my computer so I can do some local development - according to the information I've been able to find the two should live side-by-side without problem.
I can still connect to our company databases just fine, but I can't get a connection to the local XE database at all.
I've added this line to tnsnames.ora:
    XE = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = XE)))
The error I'm getting connecting is:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
I did mean duplicates even between different tnsnames.ora files.
As I understand, if you XE works, you should not need do anything for that tnsnames.ora.
Just find how entry should be for client.
BTW, what tool you will use for XE? Do you need client?
E.g. if you use SQL Developer, you do not need client or set anything to tnsnames.ora
    Regards,
    Jari

BTW, it might good to search Instant Client forums if you find help there.
If you do not find answer, then it might good idea post question there.
At least for me this is more client question than XE.
    Instant Client
But as I understand it should not be any problem use 10g client for XE.
I just have never done that =)

    I've select from Oracle Universal Installer the default setings (Enterprise option and orcl database name) ;
In Computer Management-> Services I have only "OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener"
    service; The "Orcl" database services has been removed when I hit the "Abort" option (when I received ORA-12514 error);
Anyone can iluminate me with this problem?
A few months ago I've installed the 10g product version with no error!
Before I try to install 10g relese 2(beta), I read plenty of documentation about installing the new verision of 10g release 2, and I removed any trace from old 10g Oracle (directories, registry, environment variabile, etc)
The problem is that I can't install now even the old 10g version!
I've tried on another Pc (this PC, let's say "never hear before the word ORACLE" and have the same config winXP+sp2) ..and again the same ORA-12514 error appear!
Because I could install the old 10g on my T43 laptop a few mounths ago with no error, I think the only explanation is that the windows updates, which I 've upgrade my laptop in this time cause the Oracle instalation/create database services to crush!
Am I right...? what can I do? ... I realy need the ORACLE 10g to move on it, my old Oracle 9 databases, and continue my development work!
    Thanks! Have a nice day!

I see your tnsnames.ora does not contain an entry for service_name srvdzt43 , so EZCONNECT (or hostname) resolution is used, this is possible because service_name and hostname are the same.
There's a known problem with EZCONNECT connections, if a connect string is provided, but no password (throws ORA-12514), maybe there's something like that in the DB creation scripts.
I recommend you add a proper connect string into tnsnames.ora and try again.

I have no idea why the XE service is unavailable while it is properly configured in my tnsnames.ora file.
I will appreciate your help and advices on how to configure the database to be able to connect to it by providing the service name.

    Hm, 12514 or 12154?
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect
identifier specifiedThis means that your tnsnames.ora (or other naming method) is missing the called for entry/stanza.

but then sqlplus prompts me once again for user name
and pass (it does not prompt for service name) and
after entering those two connection is established as
shown belowIn the username field you could input for example user@service
If this is the only oracle product installed on the machine, and you are connecting to it locally, you could use just
    sqlplus system/system
which uses the "default" instance (on Windows, that is).
    lsnrctl services
I have no idea why the XE service is unavailable
while it is properly configured in my tnsnames.oralsnrctl serv is on the server side, it does not matter what you have in tnsnames.ora
Normally the database should register itself to the listener, so the XE instance should have a service for it listed.
If you restart the instance's Windows service, does it show up in the listener?

  • Startup database via sqlplus - ORA-12514

Windows XP Prof., ORACLE 10g R2
I did the following on the database server:
    sqlplus sys as sysdbaSQL>shutdown
    SQL>exit
sqlplus /nologSQL> connect sys as sysdba
    ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS: Listener kann in Connect-Deskriptor angegebenen Service aktuell nicht aufl÷sen
What have I to do that I can connect to database on the server via sqlplus without using the listener? I understand that the listener can't find the service because the database is down. But there must be a possibility to connect to an idle instance.
    Thanks in advance!

The only 10g software certified/supported on Win 7 (Professional or higher) is 10.2.0.5. Win Home versions are not supported.

Other versions may or may not work - so fixing any errors that result from unsupported/uncertified combinations is up to you.

  • ORA-12514: TNS:listener - RMAN - Target Database

    Hi Pals,
Today while configuring two of my machines (On same Network) for RMAN I'm facing some issues while connect to the Catalog Server and register a target database.
Here are more details about the (Environment) -- machines:
Machine 1 - ORCL (Catalog Server)
Machine 2 - PRCL (Target Database)
Both machines and in same network.
Tnsping results: both machines are able to ping each other
Unix Ping results: both machines are able to ping
Listeners: Up and Running on both machines
    Names: Listeners (Both Machines)
TNSnames: Created an for both machines in each others tnsnames.ora file.
    tnslsnr status: Connected Both Machines)
    OS: Linux Red Hat 5
    Db: Oracle 11gR2
Status: DB are up and working good and both are in ARCHIVELOG Mode.
    Env: VMWARE Team (Version 6)
So, while trying to connect to Catalog Server(DB Name: ORCL) from Target Machine (DB name: PRCL) I'm getting a TNS:Listener based error.

  • ORA-12514 when trying to connect to the database using SERVICE

    Hi,
    Version 10204
In a single instance database i would like to create new SERVICEs in order to use them later with Resource Manager.
    The instance name is DWH.
    I run the following commands:
I added to the tnsnames.ora file the following input:
    XYZ =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = xxx)(PORT = 1522))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = XYZ)
    As SYSDBA i execute:
    > exec DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE('xyz','xyz');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    > exec DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('xyz');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
But when i tried to connect to the instance:
    sqlplus ac/ac@xyzSQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production on Sat Nov 1 14:44:43 2008
Copyright (c) 1982, 2007, Oracle. All Rights Reserved.
    ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
    descriptor
When i am trying to connect , not via the service , its successed:
    sqlplus ac/ac@dwh
    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production on Sat Nov 1 14:45:07 2008

    Connected to:
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP, Data Mining and Real Application Testing options
Could you please help to understand why its failed to connect via SERVICE ?
    Thanks

    You told us.
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
I ask some questions, you set alias for listener port (no default) + local_listener parameter, don't you?
    If you did....
    Please check by .....
    lsnrctl status
    lsnrctl service
    Let me show my example:
    About 1522 (no default port)
    SQL> show parameter local_listener
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    local_listener string ALIASLISTENER
    - check tnsnames.ora file in the same location listener.ora file.
    $ cat tnsnames.ora
    ALIASLISTENER=
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost )(PORT = 1522))
    - About create new service
    SQL> show parameter service_names
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    service_names string db
    SQL> exec DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE('xyz','xyz');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> exec DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('xyz');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> show parameter service_names
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    service_names string xyz
