  • ORA-12560 error in VS2010

    I'm getting "ORA-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error" when trying to Add Connection in VS2010 (Server Explorer > Add Connection > Username: hr, Password: hr, Data source name: Local Database). This is sample HR database in Oracle XE 10g.
    I'm guessing this could be something related to installation? My installation was like this: Oracle XE 10g which I've been using for couple of weeks. I then installed VS2010 Ultimate x86 followed by ODT with ODAC 11.2. This is on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I've noticed that ODT is installed in D:\app, while XE is in D:\oraclexe.
    I can access my database through APEX interface. Running 'sqlplus' in command line issues same ORA-12560 error. Running 'Run SQL Command Line' from Start > Oracle XE 10g works. This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

This obviously points to wrong configuration / installation, but how to fix it? That depends on the type of client connection initiated - local IPC connection (also called a bequeath connection) or a network (TCP) connection.
    For a local IPC connection to work, the client driver needs to know the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID of the local database instance - this is usually set via the environment.
    For a TCP connection to work, you need an Oracle Listener running on the Oracle server, the local Oracle database instance to have registered itself with the Listener, and for the client being able to connect to the Listener via TCP.
    Oracle Listener is a service on Windows - but the command line program is called lsnrctl and via it one can start/stop the listener and determine its status and registered services. With the Listener running, the local database should automatically register itself with the Listener, unless one manually changed database or Listener parameters.
    For TCP connectivity, the usual applies - firewalls must not block TCP access, the client needs to resolve the server hostname into an IP (if hostnames are used), that server IP must be reachable, etc.

  • ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error while running Oracle Form 10g over IE

    Hi,
    I am getting the following error message while running my form over Internet Explorer. What could be the error and the solution.
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    I am using the same user id/password that i used to create the database.
    Plz help.
    thanks,
    RV

    unless you defined the TWO_TASK in your environment, you might need to provide it during the login. The typical Forms login screen has 3 fields, username/password and TWO_TASK , which is the alias used for the database server in the tnsnames.ora file on your end. If you are using iAS forms, then a proper RAD (Resource Access Descriptor) needs to be created by the DBA or whoever manages the iAS server. This is only if SSO is utilized, if not, then you need to provide TWO_TASK as well.
    Hope this proves useful

  • 11g on VMWare Not Starting Service, ORA-12560 etc.

    It's obvious that my Listener is up and running but that the Oracle Service never got started. I'm using a VMware instance of Win2003 Server with Oracle 11g on it.
    I'm having very similar issues to the person that wrote this:
    http://www.dbasupport.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50051
    ORA-12560 at service startup *** ( protocol adapter error )
    I'm working on a VMware instance, and I'm not trying to connect from another machine, so I don't think I'll need a 'tnsnames.ora'.
    I did review my listener.ora and sqlnet.ora
    and I did adjust my hosts file (on this Win2003 Server, vmware instance), adding an entry to resolve local host and also the FQ machine name to 127.0.0.1
    This I was unsure about since when I ping the FQ machine name (property of My Computer) I get a unique ip address.
    There's also the VMware issues of what Ethernet connection setting to use: Bridged, NAT or Host Only.
    I've tried to look at logs and config files: connection, startup, trace log, etc.
    Set tracing on and saw some errors in the trace, but not sure about how to go about debugging those.
    It's apparent that I'll need to start the Database with oradim or a version specific command, oradimxx but I wasn't sure what to use for my -pfile parameter, or how to create orainit.ora or configure that file.
    One last thing: Previously my program group for 11g had 'Enterprise Manager' which brought up the webpage and showed that the database was up, uptime and other stats. Now that menu link has disappeared.
    Any suggestions on all of these issues ? TIA.

    Yeah , of course Oracle offers his own hypervisor... that's one very powerful reason.
    Please provide us with proper references to support your statements, we all will appreciate that.

    I've found the answer on Metalink Note 249212.1, which basically says that Oracle doesn't certifies any product on any VMWare virtualization products, however Oracle will support the product isolating the relationship among operating system and the Oracle product, to known issues or not known issues BUT not related to the existence of an hypervisor layer (VMWare in this case, and distinct of Oracle VM).
    In other words, if you have an issue where a certified OS+Oracle product is running over a VMWare product, you'll be lucky if the error is replicated without the VMWare product, otherwise it will be an issue induced from the hypervisor layer, therefore the hypervisor provider must solve.
    Anybody interested will follow similar proceedings with another VM products like Virtuozzo (Note 412431.1), Xen (Note 417770.1), this clearly shows a commercial strategy...not technical barriers.

  • ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error in Oracle Forms...

    Hi, I installed Oracle developer suite to use for Oracle forms but am getting "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error" when trying to run a form. The database is running locally on my PC.
    I've run the command line to see if hostname matches up with the "HOST= " in the ".../network/admin/listener.ora " file match, they do. What can I try next? I did have Oracle 10gXE installed, which I have now removed. I'm including my tnsnames and listener file content:

    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Of course you found another one. Each .and every Oracle database client home (such as developer, app server) has one.
    Don't just change the port - the tnsnames.ora in the dev home does not point to a database service. It only points to an extproc [external procedure called by a database]. You need to put a database service entry into that file similar to the one in the database home. (Easiest solution - copy the tnsnames.ora from db home ... after you've made a backup)
    And please don't tell me you are using Developer 6i - a simple Google search would verify that the networking is incompatible.

    And you also read this?
    To install, use Oracle Database 11gR1 Release 1 (11.1.0.7.0) for Microsoft Windows 2008 Server. Do not install with the 11.1.0.6.0 version.
    PS: To get better advice, don't post a marketing label like 11g only. post the full version you're trying to install.

  • Oracle Database 11g Installation Issue: ORA-12560:TNS: protocol adapter error.

    Folks,
    Hello. Initially, my Windows XP host name is "localhost" and IP address 127.0.0.1.
    I installed Oracle Database 11g with Windows XP successfully and all Database clients work with Database instance correctly.
    For some reasons, I uninstalled the entire Database Server and delete the entire installation directory /oracle.
    I configured Windows XP IP address into 192.168.196.101 in order to ping other machines.
    For my need, I installed Oracle Database 11g with Windows XP again. On step 7 of 8: Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, I got this error:
    ORA-12560:TNS: protocol adapter error.
    I click "Password Management" button, there are no rows in this Windows (no username, no lock accounts).
    I check listener as below:
    C:\>lsnrctl
    LSNRCTL>start
    Its output: listener name LISTENER has already been started.
    LSNRCTL>status
    Its output: ......Service DB1 has 1 instance. Instance DB1 status ready. The command completed successfully.
    I check \Oracle\cfgtoollogs\dbca\DB1\trace file, the entry is :
    listen[0]=LISTENER address=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=localhost)(port=1522))
    I also check \oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\SAMPLE\tnsnames.ora file and listener.ora file, the entries are the same as below
    HOST=localhost  port=1522
    I think HOST=localhost and port=1522 is the cause of the error ORA-12560 because Windows XP has been configured into HOST=192.168.196.101.
    But I don't understand how to solve this issue.
    Can any folk tell me how to solve this issue ? need to cancel the installation on step 7 of 8 and install it again ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
    Hello. Oracle Database 11g Installation Wizard is on step 7 of 8. I don't cancel the Wizard. I am not sure whether there is effect or not. listener.ora is not removed. I have been waiting for a while after stop listener.  I run the 3 commands again and copy the result as below:

    Hello all,
    I am getting ORA-12560 error running svrmgrl,sqlplus or dbca after installing 8.1.7 release 3 and patched to 8.1.7.4. My oracle_sid is set, oracle_home is pointing to the right file system. listener and database services are up and running and tnsping comes back ok. I have exhausted all metalink doc referring to ora-12560 and windows 2000. Has anyone experienced this problem before? Any help is appreciated.

  • ORA-12560 TNS protocol Adapter error in 11g (11.1.0.6)

    Hello All,
    I have Oracle 11g installed on my machine and when i tried to log in to sql plus i got the error below:
    ORA-12560 TNS protocol Adapter error
    By setting the ORACLE_SID = orcl by browsing to the bin directory of Oracle Installation the above error disappaears and i am able to log in from sql plus.
    My intention is to create a db backup for which i am trying to use the exp command...this time the same error appears.
    Also the solution of setting the ORACLE_SID is cumbersome..everytimt i want to use sql plus i need to go in and set the ORACLE_SID.
    Can anybody please help me out find a good solution for this?
    Any help would be appreciated friends.....
    Thanks in Advance!!!!!
    Regards.
    Alicia

    Can anybody please help me out find a good solution for this?The solution depends on your (not specified) operating system...
    Anyway, if you have more than one database it's normal that you have to set ORACLE_SID, if not how can Oracle know which database you want to access to ?
    You can create batch files, one per database, or you can use connection strings, e.g. sqlplus username/password@<DB>.

  • ORA-04062 error when running forms with different users

    ORA-04062 error when running forms with different users
    I have a form that has a block that should display some data from another users tables. (The other user's name is dynamic, it's selected from a list box)
    I wrote a stored procedure to get the data from other user's tables.
    When I compile the form and run it with the same user I compiled, it works without any error. But when I run the compiled form with another user I get the ORA-04062 (signature of procedure has been changed) error.
    I tried setting REMOTE_DEPENDENCIES_MODE to SIGNATURE in init.ora but it didn't help.
    My Forms version is 6i with Patch 15.
    Database version is 9.
    Here is my stored procedure:
    TYPE Scenario_Tab IS TABLE OF NUMBER(34) INDEX BY BINARY INTEGER;
    TYPE Open_Curs IS REF CURSOR;
    PROCEDURE Get_Scenarios(User_Name IN VARCHAR2, Scen_Table OUT Scenario_Tab) IS
    Curs Open_Curs;
    i NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    OPEN Curs FOR
    'SELECT Seq_No FROM '|| User_Name ||'.scenario';
    i := 1;
    LOOP
    FETCH Curs INTO Scen_Table(i);
    EXIT WHEN Curs%NOTFOUND;
    i := i + 1;
    END LOOP;
    END Get_Senarios;
    I would be happy to solve this problem. It's really important.
    Maybe somebody can tell me another way to do what I want to do. (getting a list of values from another users tables)

    I think it should be a better solution to create a package,
    and put your own TYPES and procedure into it.
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE PKG_XXX IS
    TYPE TYP_TAB_CHAR IS TABLE OF .... ;
    PROCEDURE P_XX ( Var1 IN VARCHAR2, var2 IN OUT TYP_TAB_CHAR );
    END ;
    Then in your Form :
    Declare
    var PKG_XXX.TYP_TAB_CHAR ;
    Begin
    PKG_XXX.P_XX( 'user_name', var ) ;
    End ;

  • ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. Running sqlplus in different paths.

    Hi,
    Title: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error. Running sqlplus in different paths.
    Very strange. We have windows host, 32 bit oracle software 10g, 64 bit sap kernel X64.
    We have done Kernel patch yesterday and it was successful, system up and running.
    Only problem with sqlplus. I have logged in as SIDADM user and when i open command box, the default path is C:\Documents and Settings\SIDADM. when i run sqlplus sys as sysdba, iam able to connnect without any problem but when iam in this path -   /usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run and run sqlplus sys as sysdba, it returns ORA-12560 error. Thats why, the BRTOOLS are also not working, giving same error.
    Is there a problem in the kernel? Where could be the problem?
    The environment variables ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME are set properly.
    Many thanks,
    Mohan.

    Hi,
    Please look into below SAP recommendation from SAP note 192822:
    3. Can I run 32-bit applications on my 64-bit platform?
    This depends on the platform you are running on. For all unix- platforms, this  can be done without any problem. Even if the OS is started in 64-bit mode, it is possible to run 32-bit applications (R/3, oracle) on it. there is no need to either upgrade oracle or R/3 toa 64-bit version.
    This, however is NOT the case for windows & Linux. If you have IA64 hardware in place, you do need to run an 64-bit OS as well as all application in 64-bit mode.
    Could you please now share with me your OS (version and whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit as well), database (32 bit or 64 bit), SAP system (32 bit or 64 bit and System release) ?
    Thanks
    Sunny
