    Hi,
If I check in TOAD, then I see that the max size of the tablespace is unlimited. Btw, Tablespace XYZ is actually an index tablespace - dont know if this makes a difference. The max size of the data tablespace is also unlimited.
Using the query select * from user_ts_quotas or dba_ts_quotas, I dont see tablespace XYZ or its data tablespace in this result set. I'm not sure why.
Maybe giving the user unlimited quota on the tablespace might solve the problem - i dont know, but if it does, then I have to ask why has it worked all the time without this and only now it's giving an error??
The user has been doing the same thing everyday for the past couple of years and only now getting this error.

I have inserted a new tape so there is lot of space available on the tape. Tape is attached to the same box, so its only 1 box with admin, media and client roles.
The backup was working fine earlier on this box, this all started today itself and also the file system backup to tape using OSB is still working fine but not the RMAN backups, nobody changed anything in OSB or Database configurations.
Is it time to log the TAR or is there something else which I can check??
    Daljit Singh

Usually, that kind of error message indicates that the OSB user (with associated os privilege) does not have os privilege to access SCSI devices (ie tape devices). Believe it or not this is a common problem, especially, for the DBA user which os rights don't always include access to tape devices.
OSB will always adhere to os privileges soooo if the os blocks a user, OSB will also block that user.

    (2) Type sbttest test
The sbttest is a standalone program which test to see if the MML(Media
Management Layer) software is installed and can accept a data stream and return
    an identical data stream.
sbttest will return 0 which indicates success or 1 which indicates an error has
occurred. An error means it's not an Oracle problem.

  • RMAN backup fails using OEM with no output error

I am trying to do a weekly automatic full backup of a database in noarchivelog mode using RMAN in Enterprise Manager. Every time I submit the backup job (even if I try to do an immediate backup) the job fails almost immediately. When I Iook at the job output for the failed attempt, it says that there is no output for the job. I believe I have all of the preferred credentials and priveleges correct. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be or maybe where I can find an error log for rman to get a better explanation of the error?
    Thanks

  • ORA-19507 when restoring pfile from autobackup

    Hey,
We're testing our disaster recovery process and recently installed netbackup 5.1 on a AIX 5.3 server. Our database is 10.2.0.4.
We've imported the tapes, seemingly successfully. Now we are trying to restore the pfile from an autobackup of the spfile. RMAN finds the appropriate file in the netbackup catalog, but can't read it, it seems. The tape device is a standalone drive. • All pieces crosscheck validate but when  building standy - ORA-19870: error

This project is to take a backup of a database and restore it to a standby on the SAME server.
The parameters and channels are the same for both. All backups, controlfiles, and archivelog files show as crosschecked and available,

Did you duplexed the controlfile? If you did, then you may try use the other one to do the restore.

please any one help me out.
    Thanks & Regards,
    VN.

I don't have much knowledge in TSM.I guess you are not alone with this in this Oracle forum. The error comes from TSM, follow the suggestion in 'User response':
    Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure
    Explanation:
An attempt to connect to the server using TCP/IP communications failed. This error can occur if the LAN connection went down or if your system administrator canceled a backup operation.
    System action:
    Session rejected. Processing stopped.
    User response:
Retry the operation, or wait until the server comes back up and retry the operation. If the problem continues, see your system administrator for further help.

Thanks for respond but issue is slightly different, we have RMAN backup setup with TSM and it was working fine earlier but last week one of our team installed and configured NetBackup with RMAN for testing oracle backup with RMAN-NetBackup and after testing they revert back the changes.
After this testing mine RMAN-TSM backup started giving error and in error it seems to point to NetBackup instead of TSM, however I did check the RMAN script but there is no any changes that point to NetBackup.
I am not sure what changes are causing to point backup to NetBackup instead of TSM.

  • Integration of RMAN with virtual tape library

OS: Oracle Linux 5.5 UEK (Virtualbox)
    Oracle: 11gR2 11.2.0.1 Enterprise + ASM (Virtualbox)
    Hello,
I would like to test something about RMAN and writing directly to tape. For this I installed mhvtl, a virtual tape library. The installation was pretty easy. http://sites.google.com/site/linuxvtl2/
RMAN does not recognize any tape in the system.
ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-27211: Failed to load Media Management Library
What I found out is that in order to make backups to a media manager, RMAN must communicate with a media management library, which is a 3rd party library that is not supplied by Oracle. So I guess unless there is a Oracle MML library available for mtx I' out of luck here.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    rpm -ivh mhvtl-0.18-13.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -ivh mhvtl-0.18-13.src.rpm
    cd /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/
    tar zxvf ../SOURCES/mhvtl-2011-01-11.tgz
    cd mhvtl-0.18/kernel
    make
    make install
    /etc/init.d/mhvtl start
    yum install mtx
The tape library and using it for backup from system seems to work fine:
    # mtx status
    Storage Changer /dev/changer:4 Drives, 43 Slots ( 4 Import/Export )
    Data Transfer Element 0:Full (Storage Element 1 Loaded):VolumeTag = E03001L4
    etc.
    # mtx load 1
Drive 0 Full (Storage Element 1 loaded)
    # tar cf /dev/ntape ./
    # tar tvf /dev/ntape

    Thanks for the tip!
I installed Oracle Secure Backup Express and spend all afternoon with this strange product, mainly to troubleshoot the installation and setup. I'm not really sure everything works - it's quite a piece of software, as usual.
I ran into a couple of issues that were not mentioned in the installation documentation:
    - install sg3_utils
    - use obtool to register the server as mediaserver
    # sg_map -i -x
    /dev/sg9 3 0 1 0 1 /dev/nst0 IBM ULT3580-TD5 550V
    /dev/sg10 3 0 2 0 1 /dev/nst1 IBM ULT3580-TD5 550V
    /dev/sg11 3 0 3 0 1 /dev/nst2 IBM ULT3580-TD4 550V

    # obtool

    ob> mkdev -t library -o -a ol55:/dev/sg18 library1
    ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a ol55:/dev/sg9 -l library1 -d 1 tape1
RMAN was not happy with it:
ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-27023: skgfqsbi: media manager protocol error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
sbt__rpc_connect: Internal error - could not connect to obproxyd (Oracle Secure Backup error: 'bad port name specified (OB SBT proxy manager)').
    # cat /usr/tmp/obproxyd.log

2011/01/23.02:11:10 [5431] can't listen for connections - Operation not permitted
Document ID 396046.1 solution outlines to correct the hostname or mediaserver name. However, this was not the problem. I finally figured that /etc/obproxyd is a symlink to a .wrapper script which points to the actual proxy application. The fix was:
    #chmod +s /usr/local/oracle/backup/.etc.linux86_64obproxyd
    After this the error changed:
RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_SBT_TAPE_1 channel at 01/23/2011 02:43:36
ORA-19506: failed to create sequential file, name="3cm2q2an_1_1", parms=""

ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
sbt__rpc_cat_query: Query for piece 3cm2q2an_1_1 failed.
(Oracle Secure Backup error: 'no preauth config found for OS user (OB tools) oracle').
    The fix for this error:
    https://10.0.0.6, login as 'admin'
Configure->Users->Select Admin->Edit->Preauthorized Access->Add user 'Oracle' (select host and rman)

Strange, backup to tape with 'mtx' and 'tar' works, so the problem might be OSB.

I finally got it running. I deleted the current library and drive configuration and used the webtool to configure the other library at /dev/sg17. it was also necessary to use the webtool to load a volume into the drive. Unfortunately I did not note down the steps in details. Maybe next time.
