  • Obtaining an ODBC link to an Oracle 9.2 database via Instant Client

    Hi
Justin Cave, on one of your other forums, has been assisting but as of yet we have not suceeded. He suggested that this forum may be of help.
We are trying to find a way of linking a Microsoft Access database to an Oracle 9.2 database but as of yet have not suceeded can you please help?
The database server we are trying to connect to has a full installation of Oracle 9.2. We have a limited number of workstations that have a fully licensed Oracle client installation (required to use our PDM system). On these workstations we can successfully configure an ODBC connection to the Oracle database on the server and link tables in MS Access. However the majority of our PCs do not have any Oracle client installed, nor do we have any further Oracle client licenses to install with (we do have the installation media for both the server and client software).
We have attempted to use Orcale Instant Client (and ODBC addon) believing that we do not need licenses for this, at both the latest version 11.1.0.70 and at the earliest version we could find 10.1.0.5 but neither was successful in making an ODBC connection to the Oracle 9.2 database. Is this because we are using the wrong version of the Instant Client or is it just because we cannot configure it correctly? Are we correct in believing that we do not need to purchase licenses for Instant Client?
If we are way off the mark, what can you suggest?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kevin (and co)

    Hi Laurenz,
Firstly, thank you for your prompt response.
Secondly, in answer to some of your questions:
    1. How did you install Instant Client? By extracting the downloaded package to a directory on the local HDD (C:) maintaining the subfolder structure.
    2. What environment variables did you set? We set TNS_ADMIN using the System Properties Dialog (Environment Variables) to be the folder where Instant Client was installed to (extracted to) i.e. C:\InstantClient_11_1. We also amended the PATH to include this folder using a command prompt and typing PATH=%PATH%;C:\InstantClient_11_1. This works but only until the next reboot when the PATH reverts to the previous value.
    3. Did you run the odbc_install script to install the ODBC driver? Yes, we extracted the ODBC add-on into the same folder and ran the ODBC_install.exe script successfully.
    4. Does the driver show up in the list of drivers on your system? Yes.
    5. Do you get any error messages? When we use v11.1.0.70 and hit the test connection button within ODBC admin, we get a noticiable delay followed by 'Unable to connect... TNS could not resolve the connect identifier'. When we use v10.1.0.5 we cannot even complete the System DSN ODBC configuration.
Our next questions are as follows:
    1. Is the TNS_ADMIN environment variable case sensitive and should it have a \ after the folder name?
    2. How do we amend the PATH permanently, so it does not revert following reboot?
    3. What part does tnsnames.ora play in the configuration. This file currently resides deep within the folder structure on the database server. Should we be copying it to the local C: and placing it in the same folder as Instant Client?
Once again, many thanks for your help.
    Yours,
    Kevin (and co)

  • Occi  10.1.0.4 instant client  interface   and MSVC ++ 6.0

    First of All
I am using XP windows and 10.1.0.4 instant client with MSVC 6.0.
I success with connection only in Release version not Debug and only giving
user and password and not db data.
In any case i am able after connect to select some from table , insert etc. but
only 2,3,4 times not more !!! After that it crashes.
I have on the system installed also Oracle Form 10g . May it causes problems ?
I have check paths etc. and it seems to catch the right include lib and dll even
if Oracle Form 10g has some dll with the same name.
Thank You in advance for any help which will be very appreciate.
    Kind Regards

  • Instant Client 10.1.0.3 available for most platforms

Instant Client 10.1.0.3 is available for many platforms. Click through to specific platforms on the Instant Client website to see availability. We will try to release the rest of the platforms over the next few weeks, but may be delayed due to holidays in the US.
A notable change in 10.1.0.3 is the availability of the SDK package. These are the header files needed for compiling applications with the Instant Client only (in lieu of using an full Oracle client). There is a demonstration makefile in the package.
Documentation will be released shortly. However, if you are already familiar with developing with Oracle, you should not have any problems.
Another change is the unzipped directory of the packages that includes a X.Y version (10.1.0.3 is in instantclient10_1). This is purely a sanity check to make sure that your unzipped versions will overwrite a patchset of the same major release (the usual intention), but not of a different major release (such as a 10.2.0.1). We hope this helps everyone.
    Good luck! Hope everyone enjoys!

The new instant client looks promising on SuSE 9.2.
You need to rework some things, though.
    1. setup the dynamic linker:
    - add a line "/usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2/client/lib" to the file /etc/ld.so.conf
    - then run ldconfig
    2. create or copy a tnsnames.ora file:
    - cd /usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2
    - md -p network/admin
    - copy a tnsnames.ora from somewhere to network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    3. add some environment: edit /etc/boot.local
    - add a line: export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2
    - add a line: export TNS_ADMIN=$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    - add a line: ORACLE_SID=(some TNS name)
    4. add another link for convinience
    - cd /usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2
    - ln -s client/lib .
in order to have the so-files also at $ORACLE_HOME/lib which is rather often used in Java-Parameters "-Djava.library.path", for example in JBoss run.sh Scripts.

    LuciaHello,
I had the same problem. It was related to the shell script interpreter being used: it is really a bash script asking to be interpreted as sh. For the impatient, the solution was to change the first line of the script orarun.sh to read as:
    #!/bin/bash
    Explanation:
    1. The script runfixup.sh calls orarun.sh. The latter is the one that fails starting at line 845.
    2. The script is really a bash script as can be seen from the if syntax used. For example at line 191 we see the double equall sign ==:
    if [ "`echo $SET_KERNEL_PARAMETERS | tr A-Z a-z`" == "true" ]
    3. The bash man page says:
    string1 == string2
    string1 = string2
True if the strings are equal. = should be used with the test command for POSIX conformance.
    string1 != string2
True if the strings are not equal.
    (End of man page excerpt)
Notice in particular that for a bash script to be POSIX it should avoid the == and just use =
    4. orarun.sh has on its first line #!/bin/sh. On my Ubuntu system, sh is a softlink to dash and the dash man page says:
    s1 = s2 True if the strings s1 and s2 are identical.
s1 != s2 True if the strings s1 and s2 are not identical.
    5. So this script script uses bash syntax but is interpreted by dash. It is possible that this worked fine for the Oracle developer if on their system sh was softlinked to bash (which is often the case). Apparently, one should then be very careful to not use idioms that are not POSIX compliant.
    6. Another solution is to change the /bin/sh softlink from dash to bash. Personally, I was less comfortable doing this (the possible repercussions were wider than the proposed solution above).
After making the change, the script ran perfectly. I think the best solution is for Oracle to update the script to be POSIX compliant or to identify itself as bash.
    Hope that helped,

  • Oracle Instant Client & Oracle 9i Client Co-existence

I am having problems installing Instant client with existing Oracle 9i client. Some of our users have Oracle 9i client already installed. In this case, I need to do the following to make it work.
    1. Add the Instantcclient dir path
    2. Remove oracle_home from registry
    3. SET NLG_LANG and TNS_ADMIN env variables.
The main issue we are facing is with TNS_ADMIN. When you set this variable to Instantcclient dir , then both Oracle 9i and InstantClient 10g started using the tnsnames.ora in instant client dir. This is not acceptable , as some of the might intend to use Oracle 9i network/admin/tnsnames.ora file when they use Oracle 9i ODBC driver.
Can you please tell me how to install/configure Instant client 10g with an existing Oracle 9i client. Also, can you send me the ODBC Connection string thats doesn't use tnsnames.ora.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Metalink note 90419.1 describes how to connect to a database without using tnsnames.ora. eg
    sqlplus system/manager@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=tiger5.com)(Port=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=V815)))
I cannot use this method when creating an ODBC DSN. I tried the Oracle9i ODBC driver, the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle but not the Oracle10g instant client ODBC driver. I suspect that the long string exceeds the ODBC specification.
I have had some success using a MS-DOS Batch File to launch an application that required the Oracle7 client long after it had been removed from the registry. This could work for the Oracle10 Instant Client
REM set up the environment variables
REM these are local to this application
    set ORACLE_HOME=%CD%\oracle7client
    set TNS_ADMIN=%ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN

  • Instant client with Oracle 8i server

I am pretty new to Oracle.
I just installed instant client on my xp workstation, and set up all the variable. I am trying to connect to a Oracle 8i server.
Can instant client connect to Oracle 8i?
    Thank you!

Although the 10.1.0.3 instant client for windows doesn't appear to be "officially out", if I try to download
http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/instantclient/instantclient-basic-win32-10.1.0.3.zip and similar files, the files do exist.
Unfortunately this version still can't connect to my corporate Oracle database:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0, 64 bit - Production
    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
Oh well, back to a full client install of Oracle 9i.
Perhaps the official release when its documented on the Instant Client download page will work.

  • Oracle 11g INSTANT CLIENT for Mac OS 10.8 with SQLLDR and WRAP

To Oracle please upgrade INSTANT Client 11g and/or 12c (future) and include two additional utilities I always use SQLLDR and WRAP. Currently I have to open a Linux VM to wrap and use SQL*Loader. I would prefer to do it all in the terminal window.
Actually I would like to see sqlldr and wrap utilities included with all instant clients (Linux, Windows, Mac OS, etc)

Can you see the difference? (btw i am sure, genezi -v as sidadm worked with 11.2.0.1)
    sidadm > /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_10204/genezi -v
    Client Shared Library 64-bit - 10.2.0.4.0
    System name:    HP-UX
    Release:        B.11.31
    Version:        U
    Machine:        ia64
    sidadm > genezi -v
    Client Shared Library 64-bit - 11.2.0.2.0
    System name:    HP-UX
    Release:        B.11.31
    Version:        U
    Machine:        ia64
    Or
    sidadm > strings /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_10204/libclntsh.so | grep 'Release'
    Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Patch Set 3                            10.2.0.4.0
Or check in SAPGui -> Menu -> Status
    Cheers Michael
PS: the cause for the behavior is, that there is always a client library in the $ORACLE_HOME directory too. And you have to be careful which one you (genezi) picks...

Here are some additional statements for 10g on Solaris 10g x86:
    1. Execute runInstaller with the -ignoreSysPrereqs option.
    2. Select 'Do not create a starter database' when installing Oracle 10g.
    3. During installation, the warning message 'SUNWsprox package not installed' can be ignored. Press Continue to resume the installation.
    4. Download and install patch 4186426 from metalink.oracle.com after installing Oracle 10g software.
    5. If you have an End User Solaris 10 distribution, install the SUNWuiu8 package prior to installing the 10g client.

  • Not able to connect VS Web Developer Express through instant client 10

I just spent 10 hours attempting to connect Web Developer Express 2010 to an Oracle 10g database. In the end the solution was beyond simple, but with the existing threads there is a lot of talking around the problem. I’m posting this in case it might help someone else.
Obtain the Oracle instant client software that will work for your database. You will only need the basic package.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-100365.html
Extract the contents to a temp location on your hard disk
Create a directory for the application – it could be anything, but here is what I used
    C:\instantclient
Copy the extracted files into the directory you just created.
Right click on my computer and choose properties
Under advanced and environment variables you will need to add the directory you created above to the system variables PATH. You will need to create a new system variable called TNS_ADMIN and put the same c:\instantclient path in it.
Create the file tnsnames.ora under the c:\instantclient directory and put your customized entry in it. Below is an example.
    tnsnams.ora file contents
    <Alias for this tnsnames entry> =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <Your Oracle Server>)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = <Your database instance>)
It’s a good idea to restart your system after this installation.
In web developer express use the .NET Framework Data Provider for OLE DB.
Here is the key piece of information!!
Under server name you need to use the alias from the tnsnames.ora file entry. If you do not do this it will not pick up the SERVICE_NAME parm and will give you some goofy error like:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor
    or
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

  • Instant Client on 64-bit Windows 7: Driver does not appear in System DSN

Instant Client on 64-bit Windows 7: Driver does not appear in System DSN tab when creating a new Data source.
    What I did so far:
I downloaded the basic and odbc zips for Window 64-bit.
    Unzipped the basic zip.
Unzipped the odbc zip to the same directory.
Added the dir path to the System Environment Variable called Path.
Double-clicked on the odbc_install.exe to run it from Windows Explorer.
Then I tried to add the driver to create a new data source but it does not appear in the list of drivers.
From a cmd window, I navigated to the instant client directory and tried to run odbc_install again.
I got the message: Oracle ODBC Driver with same name already exists.
    What am I missing?

hello, I did it like that you say,but the result also is "oracle odbc driver with same name already exists". I don't kown what can I do it ,Thank you!

  • Can't get instant client to work on Win XP

This is driving me nuts. I'm trying to get instantclient10_1 (10.1.0.4) to work reliably on Win XP so I can use it in deploying a Python app I'm writing. I have one XP system on which I have the instant client installed and working. By this I mean that it works with the appropriate of sqlplus. It also works with cx_Oracle. However, I do need to set ORACLE_HOME in order to achieve this (contra the documentation). I do not seem to need to set SQLPATH.
But I can't get it to work on any other system. I copy my instantclient10_1 directory over and use the same batch file that works on the "good" system, but I get "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified". I'm using a command of the form
    sqlplus user_name/[email protected]:1521/db_name
I've also tried a "fresh" install on that machine. Same story. I've tried it on another machine as well. Same story. It only works on this one machine!
It actually took me quite a while to get it to work on that machine, involving installing and uninstalling the full client, the instant client, both, etc. But it does work there.
Another odd "feature": On the "good" machine, if I fail to set ORACLE_HOME, it errors and suggests I do this. On the "bad" machine, I just get the "invalid or unknown NLS" error.
There are other ORACLE directories on these machines (e.g., ORA17). But I get the same results if I hide these and take all reference to them out of environment variables.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Why is it working on the one system? Why isn't it working on the others?

There's one more way that the previously-existing Oracle directories on the other machines might be tripping you up - with registry settings. In particular, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\(some home)NLS_LANG registry key may be associated with the "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" error you're getting.
Of course, the Instant Client isn't supposed to have to mess with the registry, so that makes me suspicious. And I got Instant Client SQL*PLUS on a clean XP machine to work without setting an ORACLE_HOME. All this makes me suspicious that some stuff from outside your Instant Client is being run. I know you said you cleaned your environment variables, but double-check that the other Oracle directories are out of your PATH.
If you have permission to, you might want to thoroughly scrub the old Oracles from the other machines (starting with running the Oracle Installer, then hand-cleaning the registry, the c:\Ora92 or whatever directory, and then c:\Program Files\Oracle). If you have MetaLink, Document 74790.1 is a dated but good guide to cleanly de-installing an old Oracle installation from Windows. It's much more difficult than it ought to be; sometimes it feels like an Oracle home is never truly gone. If you can't do that, perhaps save a copy of your registry and then temporarily rename HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE to ORACLE_HIDDEN, or something - something to keep any existing registry settings from distracting your Instant Client.
    Good luck!
