  • Oracle 10g RAC and Unix *rlogin* question

    I support several 10g RAC databases, running on IBM pSeries servers using AIX 5.3. Our database and clusterware are 10.2.0.3 and 10.2.0.4.
    I understand that user equivalence and rsh/ssh must be enabled in order for the RAC environment and clusterware to communicate across all of the cluster nodes.
    My problem is a question being raised by our internal system auditors. The are requesting that the rlogin and exec commands for AIX be disabled, because they feel it is a security risk. Both commands prompt for a valid userid and password when they are used to remotely login or execute a command.
    I have reviewed the RAC documentation online, and searched Metalink (I am not a Metalink expert, though!) as well as Google and can't find anything stating that rlogin and exec are specifically required in order for RAC to function properly.
    Can anyone offer advice or their perspective on whether or not these two commands need to be enabled in order for RAC to function?
    Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give to me.
    Regards,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
    as far as my knowledge goes RAC does neither use rlogin nor exec commands.
    After you setup the cluster Oracle communicates simply via. TCP (clusterware) and UDP (RAC) and is only sending and recieving messages. There is no need during runtime for a remote login.
    So als ssh and rsh are solemnly used for installation and patching (not for communication).
    Still Oracle recommends to leave them enabled, since it makes life easier than to enable ssh each time a patch is needed.

    Hi Guru
    I m using oracle 10G R2 in Unix. One of the user has unfortunately updated the table with wrong dataa aand hence we need to recover the table.
    Our DB does not have flashbaack databaase option on.
    For recovering the table using Flashback table point in time recovery, do we reqquire flaashback database option on?
    If so then how can i recover the table?
    Can i recover it theough RMAN??
    Kindly Advise.

    I understand, but your post implies ("Because I have..") that you need to set a proper value for DB_FLASHBACK_RETENTION_TARGET for FLASHBACK TABLE to work and this is not the case.
    For example:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_FLASHBACK_RETENTION_TARGET=1;
    System altered.
    SQL> CREATE TABLE TEST AS SELECT * FROM DUAL;
    Table created.
    SQL> ALTER TABLE TEST ENABLE ROW MOVEMENT;
    Table altered.
    SQL> SHOW PARAMETER DB_FLASHBACK
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    db_flashback_retention_target        integer     1
    SQL> SHOW PARAMETER UNDO
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    undo_management                      string      AUTO
    undo_retention                       integer     86400
    undo_tablespace                      string      UNDOTBS
    SQL> DELETE FROM TEST;
    1 row deleted.
    SQL> COMMIT;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> BEGIN DBMS_LOCK.SLEEP(120); END;
      2  /
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> FLASHBACK TABLE TEST TO TIMESTAMP SYSTIMESTAMP - INTERVAL '2' MINUTE;
    Flashback complete.
    SQL> SELECT * FROM TEST;

  • Oracle 10g connection issue..

    Hi ,
    I have oracle 10g installed on one unix box and i need to connect to this oracle 10g from another unix box

    When i try to connect using sqlplus 9.2.0.7.0 i am not getting any response.
    is it possible to connect to oracle10g using sqlplus 9.2.0.7.0?
    Thanks.

    When i try to connect using sqlplus 9.2.0.7.0 i am not getting any response.You failed to provide any meaningful information in order to diagnose the problem.
    I suggest that you start off with some basic tests first.
    1. Ping
    Can you ping the remote server? On the local Unix box, use the dotted IP address of the remote Unix box and determine if it responds. E.g.
    ping <IP_ADDRESS>
    2. Hostname resolution
    Ideally you want to use the hostname (instead of dotted IP) of remote Unix box. Determine if the local Unix box resolves the remote Unix box's hostname. E.g.
    ping <HOSTNAME>
    3. Oracle port connectivity
    Next you need to test if the TCP port used by the Oracle Listener on that remote Unix box is reachable from the local box (and not firewalled for exampled). Telnet into this port (if the connection is accepted, press enter a few times and the telnet connection will be terminated by the listener). E.g.
    telnet <HOSTNAME> 1521
    4. Test SQL*Plus connectivity
    Once you've established that connectivity to the remote Listener is working, you need to test the TNS connection string and ensure that the connection parameters (such as ORACLE SID) that is passed to the Listener is correct. E.g.
    sqlplus scott/tiger@"(DESCRIPTION= (ADDRESS= (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=<HOSTNAME>)(PORT=1521)) (CONNECT_DATA= (SID=<ORACLE_SID>) (SERVER=dedicated)))"
    Once all ths is working, should you update the local Unix box's tnsnames.ora file with the TNS connection string and use that TNS alias for connecting via SQL*Plus.
    If any of these steps do not work, post the full details of the step PLUS the actual error information (error codes and error messages).

  • Oracle Streams:  Oracle 10g in Unix to Oracle 10g in Windows 2003

    Hello,
    At our company, we wish to migrate one of our Oracle 10g databases from Windows 2003 to Unix environment. With this new Oracle database in Unix, we would like to connect it via Linked Streams to another Oracle 10g database in a Windows 2003 environment.
    My question is: Is this possible? If so, what middleware/other components would we need to set this up?
    Thanks!

    You can use any of the samples in the official Oracle docs:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14229/pt_demos.htm#sthref1277
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14228/ptrep_demos.htm#BEIDDCBI
    There is simply nothing special that has to be done for the different OS.

    paragIf you are in 10g, you can simple call shell script from DBMS_SCHEDULER:
    BEGIN
    DBMS_SCHEDULER.CREATE_JOB (
    job_name => 'TEST_SCRIPT',
    job_type => 'EXECUTABLE',
    job_action => 'PATH_OF_YOUR_SCRIPT',
    start_date => SYSDATE,
    repeat_interval => 'FREQ=MINUTELY; INTERVAL=1',
    enabled => TRUE,
    comments => 'Shell script from Oracle'
    END;

    Please help me with this problem.
    Thank you

    It is because of UNIX shell. I also faced this error during installation.
    First check your shell by the following command.
    $ echo $SHELL
    Then select the below.
    For csh shell
    $ setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    For sh,ksh and bash
    $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    After you do this check the value of DISPLAY variable.
    $ echo $DISPLAY
    If the DISPLAY variable is set then run ./runInstaller.
    One advice: Keep a complete log of your terminal session. This will help you in future :)

    I remember one time whe I took a snapshot on VM server, grid control services are down for a moment, 4 minutes, WebCache seemed cleaned, this page is gone, after 3 minutes, it comes back.
    Anyone has the same issue, please share your experience.

  • ORA-01722: invalid number error coming in Oracle 10g.

    Hi,
    We are getting the error "ORA-01722: invalid number" while opening a cursor using CURSOR FOR LOOP.
    This error has started coming only after we have migrated to Oracle 10g from Oracle 9i. Earlier the same code used to work properly. And also on Oracle 10g, its not happening every time. Sometimes it gives error while sometimes it works.
    Does anybody know about any such bug in Oracle 10g. Our cursor is a parametrized cursor accepting a VARCHAR2 parameter and the value we are passing to it is also character.
    Our database is Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production and is running on UNIX server.

    And also on Oracle 10g, its not happening every time. Sometimes it gives error while sometimes it works. This is typically due to
    a) environment settings that differ from session to session
    b) or more often, data
    The actual error means that Oracle expects a number and is unable to obtain a number from the input (data or SQL or bind variables) supplied. I agree with William that it looks a lot like an implicit TO_NUMBER() conversion failing.
    Why not add a debug exception handler to the code? When that exception occurs, dump the PL/SQL call stack and values of all variables and parameters to a debug/logging table (using an autonomous transaction).

  • Error while installing Oracle 10G on Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.8 32 bit

    Our machine is a x86_64 machine with 32 GB of RAM available. I have installed OEL 4.8 32 bit on this machine (configured swap space of 32 GB) and OEL by default boots with the Hugemem kernel.
    I am trying to install Oracle 10G enterprise edition on this. All required kernel parameters, shell limits etc. have been verified and configured. The preinstallation checks succeed on all the tests and installation proceeds smoothly. However in the last step of configuring the database using dbca following two errors are thrown:
    1. ORA-27102 - out of memory
    2. ORA-01034 - ORACLE not found
    Most places where I am reading are telling to configure kernel parameters. However that doesn't seem to be the problem in this case.
    Please Help.

    Hi;
    What is exact db version? What installation log says?
    Please see and confirm you have all pre-req settings

    Intel SVR4 UNIX Error: 2: No such file or directory
    and following the error message prompt every minutes.
    "oracle: (Oracle CSSD will be run out of init)"
    "root: Failure in CSS initialization opening OCR."
    I don't think reinstall oracle will solve my problem if I don't figure out what going wrong. Could anyone tell me what I need to do? Thanks very much for helping.
    Cheers,
    Alex

    Check also if the t-bit is set:
    [root@vtl1g121 ~]# ls -dl /tmp
    drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4096 Apr 10 11:44 /tmp
    This is needed to mark the filesystem/directory as temporary.
    Sometimes this can cause such problems also
    Command: chmod +t   /tmp

    DISPLAY not set. Please set the DISPLAY and try again.
    Depending on the Unix Shell, you can use one of the following commands as examples to set the DISPLAY environment variable:
    - For csh:                % setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    - For sh, ksh and bash:      $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0; export DISPLAY
    Use the following command to see what shell is being used:
         echo $SHELL
    Use the following command to view the current DISPLAY environment variable setting:
         echo $DISPLAY
    - Make sure that client users are authorized to connect to the X Server.
    To enable client users to access the X Server, open an xterm, dtterm or xconsole as the user that started the session and type the following command:
    % xhost +
    To test that the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, run a X11 based program that comes with the native operating system such as 'xclock':
         % <full path to xclock.. see below>
    If you are not able to run xclock successfully, please refer to your PC-X Server or OS vendor for further assistance.
    Typical path for xclock: /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock
    [oracle@staging database]$ echo $SHELL
    /bin/bash
    Please help me.

    Edited by: satish.ygl on Oct 30, 2012 7:49 PMyou must log onto the DB Server as below (or functional equivalent)
    ssh -X oracle@DB_Server
    & the first & only command after logging onto the DB Server should be as below
    xclock
    If/when xclock fails, then OUI will fail.
