Oracle 10g  is an auto managed database. Why ?

Oracle 10g is an auto managed database. Why ?
I have read that with 10g version, Oracle database will need very less management, since it can be configured to automanage itself. Sounds not believable.
Apart from auto extending tablespaces, what others tasks can be automanaged in Oracle DB 10 G release ?
Please discuss.

Oracle 10g is obsolete.  Oracle 11g is already at terminal release.
Have you installed the Oracle rdbms software?
Installing Oracle and Building the Database
If you are going to be a professional DBA, you need to learn to
    1) read the documentation
    2) wean yourself from dependence on pictures and GUIs.
    3) read the documentation
    =================================================
Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career.  To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to  docs.oracle.com.
Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth.  They are reference manuals.  Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - *Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual*.
    - Take a look in your alert log.  One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - *When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again*.

  • About spfile creating in oracle 10g while creating a new database

    hi everyone,
i had this problem while i was creating a new database in oracle 10g.when running the database script, it gives an error about invalid option for create temporary tablespace. is it necessary to have an spfile created in 10g. when the script was not working,we tried to create spfile which gives error tht it does not match the parameter db_name. its taking the default db_name=orcl itself..tis not taking our new db name.
im creating it manually through sql prompt not through DBCA.the problem is that its still accepting the default db name. please send me the solution with syntaxes.
    thanx

first of all, thanx for giuding me as im a student doing a course in this
what abt the creation of spfile.. in a documentation for steps in creating database, they have mentioned it as recommended in creating spfile.here are some notes regarding this ....for oracle 10g
Step 5: Create a Server Parameter File (Recommended)
Oracle recommends that you create a server parameter file as a dynamic means of maintaining initialization parameters. The server parameter file is discussed in "Managing Initialization Parameters Using a Server Parameter File".
The following script creates a server parameter file from the text initialization parameter file and writes it to the default location. The script can be executed before or after instance startup, but after you connect as SYSDBA. The database must be restarted before the server parameter file takes effect.
-- create the server parameter file
    CREATE SPFILE='/u01/oracle/dbs/spfilemynewdb.ora' FROM
    PFILE='/u01/oracle/admin/initmynewdb/scripts/init.ora';
    SHUTDOWN
-- the next startup will use the server parameter file
    EXIT
the error : db_name does not match with the parameter.
its still taking the default orcl database name

  • Can we use replication usings oracle 10g steams for EBS r12 database?

    HI,
We are using EBS 12.0.6 and database 10.2.0.3 on linux 32-bit/64-bit OS (Multi-Node env).
Actually We want to decrease the load of custom reports on actual production system, so thats why
we need reports server and as my past experience I had used oracle streams for replication with simple schema based replication and tablespace replication also.
So, please educate me, that can i used the oracle 10g streams for EBS schemas like APPS, GL ,INV, PO, ONT, ODM, AR, AP, CM etc?
Please provide us the above related env docs and road Map.
If you have any other way to create the Report Server?
    Regard,
    Fayaz Ahmed

    Hi,
We are not in a position to upgrade the EBS from 12.0.6 to 12.1, because this is lengthy task, but we had already tested technically it in test env, but functional testing in pending.
Now we want to immediate solution if possible, because this is production?
    So, please suggest another.

  • Cannot use existing oracle 10g db as collab suite database

    Hi all,
I am trying to simulate colocated IM architecture installation in my test machines. I tried to use my existing Oracle db 10g R2 as my collab suite database. The OUI prompted an error after checking prerequisites:
Oracle Home you have specified is an Oracle 10g 10.2.0.0.0 or higher version and cannot be configured into an Oracle Collaboration Suite Database.
    Refering to OCS documentation,
"You need Oracle Database 10g (10.1.0.4.2) for the Oracle Collaboration Suite installation to be successful. If you have an earlier version of database, for example Oracle Database 10g (10.1.0.2) or Oracle Database 10g (10.1.0.3), then you must apply the Oracle Database 10g
Release 1 (10.1.0.4.2) Patchset to this existing Database."
Install Guide 10g R1 B15793-01 Chapter 5.2.1 "You can optionally convert an existing Oracle Database 10g into an Oracle Collaboration Suite Database. The database must be version 10.1.0.5 or higher.."
Deployment Guide 10g R1 B14479-01 Chapter 4These statements indicates that oracle DB 10.1.0.5 or higher can be converted into OCS DB. But the OUI hit me with the error. Have anyone encountered this before? or any idea why? Thanks

did you find out the solution for your issue. I ran into the same problem.

  • Oracle 10g Express Service not starting Database

I have a fresh download and install or Oracle 10gExpress and am having issues when I manually start the OracleXE service. The OracleXE Service starts, but the database does not. The error I see is ora-12560.
The database and service stops correctly if I manually stopthe OracleXE service. The start of the service just won't start the database.
    The oradim.log contains
    Thu Oct 15 11:51:30 2009
C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\bin\oradim.exe -startup -sid xe -usrpwd * -log oradim.log -nocheck 0
    Thu Oct 15 11:51:31 2009
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    New Information:
What I just found out was that it all works fine if the install of Oracle 10g Express is done prior to joining the Server to a domain. If the install is done after the server is part of a domain, the service will not start the database. If the install is done prior to putting the Server in a domain, the service will start the database.
Any help why this must be installed prior to adding the server to the domain?
    Edited by: user10279386 on Oct 15, 2009 9:24 AM

    Hi!
I think that installation must be done with Domain user who is Administrator on this machine also. Check ORA_DBA group that consist of at least two users: SYSTEM (who by default brings up the service, but you can change it) and your domain user (local Administrator on that server) who is making installation of XE on that server.
    Hope this helps,

  • Using Oracle as an IP Address Managment Database

Can an Oracle database be setup to document and manage IP
Adresses. Our Software team built a database for my group to
document addresses but, it does not perform any math features
based on subnet mask. Any suggetions on where to look for IP
Address Database creation with an Oracle database?

    Dear Stefan
(Please send the King of Iceland my regards)
We have just undertaken a similar project - but in reverse - i.e. synchronising an LDAP server from Oracle.
Our challenge was a little simpler in that we could use triggers to instigate an LDAP call on update/delete/insert.
We originally tried using the Oracle JVM in conjunction with the Netscape's LDAP JSDK, but this proved too flakey, and we have reverted to calling an extproc which inturn calls some java code to update LDAP.
Working the other way would be more complex and I'm not sure how you could get LDAP to invoke a command to update Oracle.
However, if you managed the process from within Oracle you could maybe use LDAP groups to maintain a list of those users that were in sync, and those that required synchronising.
    Good luck

  • Oracle 10G and UCCX 5.0 Database Connection return 0 rows on query

Currently I have an issue with UCCX 5.0 and Oracle 10G, we need to access a table on an Oracle10G DB, form IP IVR, so I installed the driver, created the ODBC connection and declared the ODBC, user and password on the Database subsystem (name on UCCX match the ODBC name) and restarted the engine.
Im trying to do simple select statement (SELECT * FROM TABLE) and I'm getting a 0 count once I test it.

    Hi,
I see it has been a while since you posted this question, but I am having exactly the same problem with an Oracle integration and I was wondering if you were able to fix this and how.
Your reply will be greatly appreciated.

  • Oracle 10g Scheduler, the Auto Task Job Class

When we are assign to a job to the auto task JOB Class on Oracle 10g scheduler, please advise what exactly we are asking Oracle to do?
From what I read from my text book, by assigning a job to a Job Class we can control the following..
Resource_Consumer_Group : Determine how much resources being allocate to the job
Logging_Level: Determine the detailing level of logging
Log_history: Determine how long the logged data should be retained
For auto task, what are the value on these paremeters set to?
    Thanks,

By default, jobs are assigned to DEFAULT_JOB_CLASS.
You can see attributes for the class from:
    SELECT * FROM   dba_scheduler_job_classes;

  • Oracle 10g Paremeter to Auto Roll Back uncommited transanctions

    Hi all
In SME Segment - People donot affort having Oracle Dba and at the same time less experienced persons keep making their own tests
    Situation goes as under :-
    a) Oracle 10g Windows 2003 64 Bit version on Branded HP Server with 8GB Ram having around 100 simultaneous users
    b) User A on Machine A fires command say
Table Iledg has inventory data say around 2 Million records
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Records get updates - But user A does either of the following
    i) Does not give commit
ii) Preses Ctl + Alt + Del
    iii) Switches off the Computer
    Problem
All other users get hanged for their Transanctions relating to table Iledg. EDP person is not able identify the culprit i.e User A
We have already tried - that if we kill the session of User A , position becomes OK
    Solution wanted for
    a) Set some Oracle Parameter which automatically rolls back un committed transnactions for say 5 Minutes
    b) Oracle automatically kills those sessions who have un commited transanctions for more than say 5 minutes.
Because in SME Segment - It is very difficult to ask the users to fire some very technical commands to find out the culprit and to kill their sessions. At the same time we can not start the server again and again.
    Suresh Bansal

    Thanks for the reply.
We were also very sure about Oracle 10g beharviour but it actually does not happen in abnormal disconnections.
    We tested this way
    a) Table Iledg has inventory data say around 2 Million records
    Machine A fires command say
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Oracle Results -> ?? rows updated ->Did not gave commit command ->Intentionally to test it switched off the machine without Exiting from
    SQL*Plus
    then on Machine B)
    Again tried to
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Session of Machine A is not killed by Oracle 10g and is blocking the Transanction of Machine B which is very unfortunate as we thought Oracle 10g must have killed the session of Machine A when he switched off his Machine. When blocking_session of Machine A is killed ->Position becomes absolutely OK and normal.
This can be tested in just 2 minutes at your end.
Kindly suggest some workable remedy to overcome such abnormal client disconnections. Setting Profile idle time is not the workable solution as we create Oracle Connection at the start of VB6 application and that connection goes on thru out applications for all reports and transanctions.
This kind of problem is not faced in last 6 years over the same forms. But now the client network has grown to say 700 Computers and is creating problems intermittently which is diagnosed properly and terminates the Oracle Connections which sometimes creates these kinds of problems.

Ask Tom and Burlesson refer to memory issues. Earlier in the month/late last month I found that a permission error was to blame on 10g installations on AIX (our installation is on AIX 5.3 ML8) -- I've checked and the external jobs controller permissions are correct, yet I'm still faced with this strange hang. The database is in no archive log mode, and not being shutdown at the time -- there is a massive truncate and import running at the time to re-create the database. This is what hangs and prompts the operators to call. The exact same process has been followed for the last two years without issues. It's only in the last week that this has been occurring. At first I thought it was the go-love on 6 April 2010 but we only started experiencing this apparent hang (cannot log in using SQL*Plus either as sys as sysdba or using OS authentication). Killing the pmon process and restarting the DB works and shows no sign of problems. I'm just frustrated as to the lack of error messages in the alert log when this happens and how to stop this from happening again.
If anyone needs more information kindly post your question and I will answer as soon as I can. Your help and cooperation in this matter is appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Andries Burger

I've updated the processes in the database and increased the sessions. I've done some investigatio into the number of processes and sessions used by our 'off the shelve' product and the numbers are considerably different from what the vendor claimed. Our usual pattern has been a hang then one 36 hour period of processing without issues, then another hang. Since posting this - I restarted the DB that same hour - we've had a peacefull 24 hour period, so if the process and session increase did not help, I'll be looking at another support call from operations in the next nine hours. I however this has fixed the problem, or at least this symptom, I'll mark this as having solved the question.
Another aspect I've left off. The application makes use of three database (this problematic one being one) and a number os public synonyms to tables stored in one of the other databases. How do I determine the number of 'sessions' that would flow over a dblink and/or a synonym? Sessions connecting from outside can be more than one session on a physical connection - would the same hold true for dblinks and synonyms? (If that is the case I might have to increase the sessions some more than where they are at present.
    Kind Regards,
    AB
