Oracle 10g network traffic
hi im new to oracle, and i was wondering if anybody can tell me what port does the oracle traffic use when it goes over local network connections? is it configurable?where?
The Oracle listener listens on port 1521 by default. This is configurable in the listener.ora file.
On Unix machines, database traffic occurs on the same port that listener traffic does. On Windows machines, things get a bit more complicated because of some architectural limitations of Windows. Clients are instructed to reconnect on a different port, chosen from a large number of ports Oracle considers available.

Need some helpt...
After successfully installing Oracle 10g on windows xp pro.. I can't access 10g from sql +/tnsping when not connected to the internet..I get error-
TNS-12560 TNS:Protoco adapter error
but this problem ceases once connected to the internet...
I'm of the opinion something is pointing in the default direction!!!
below are my tnsname and listener files...
Would appreciate someones help..

Not able to start the listener in oracle 10g after the domain name changed
Hi
I had installed the oracle 10g on zLinux. It was working fine( was able to mount the database and start the listener). Now my server's domain name got changed. So i have added the new domain name in the tnsnames.ora and listeners.ora file . now i could able to mount the databases but am not able to start the listener . whille starting the listener , am getting the following error

Oracle 10G Non-Network install - OEM will not start when on the LAN.
Greetings,
Got through a non-networked 10G Enterprise installation OK; I chose to create the orcl schema, connected to it through various utilities, added new tablespace, and all was well. I also checked my Host Name by pinging it in DOS, it showed me the IP address of the MS loopback adapter which is what I was expecting.
Once I connected the same machine to the LAN (and internet) and re-booted, for some reason the Host Name was now assigned the dynamic IP address of the LAN and not LAN2 (which is the loopback adapter that is assigned a static local IP address). It did this even though I had already added an entry in the /etc/hosts file that explicitly assigns a static IP address to the Host Name (as recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions). I also could not get the OEM to launch a webpage, run and connect to the orcl database after the re-boot; I am wondering if this is related to the IP address assigned to Host Name changing; maybe the Oracle agent can no longer resolve the URL for some reason?
In the end I find that the only way to insure I can have a working Oracle environment and be on an active network at the same time, is to bring up the Oracle environment on a standalone system first, and once Oracle is running connect the system to the network. Is there no way to automate this process?
The format of the hosts file entry recommended by the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions is as follows:
===========================================================
IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
where:
IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered for the loopback adapter.
hostname is the name of the computer.
domainname is the name of the domain.
For example:
10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
==========================================================
In my case since I am not part of a Windows domain (but am part of a Windows Workgroup), I added an entry in the /etc/host file that looks like the following:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.110.250 IBM-6AB1330E158
==> Note that I did not add the domain name to the entry I created since I am not part of a domain, I also used the format I found in the etc/hosts file which is:
IP_address hostname.domainname
- not -
IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
Which is the format recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions; this does leave me wondering which format is correct...
Thanks in Advance for any help,
ADG13I have not. I am hoping someone (maybe even from Oracle support) will step up and officially tell us we are either right or wrong in the way we are approaching this. From the research I have done on the internet it sounds like this should work, you should be able to have Oracle starting and running fine whether you boot connected to the LAN or not, assuming you have created the MS loopback adapter, assigned it a static IP, and changed the hostname entry in etc/hosts file as part of the 10G WinXP recommended pre-installation instructions.
And yet I find I have to start Oracle when I am not connected to the LAN or the services will not start correctly. If this is a "feature" then hopefully someone will tell us and maybe give us a workaround or give us an idea if this will be addressed in a future release. Having said that and in fairness to the Oracle product; being a developer I have other products installed on my machine that have special networking setup needs also, and in my case this could be exasperating or even possibly causing this Oracle problem I am having. To be specific I have software for 2 different VPNs installed so I can tunnel into 2 private networks. One of these VPNs require me to make use of a DNS Suffix (as shown below) which might be contributing to my problems, not sure. I also have VMWare installed which uses it own network adapters when it is running, so you can see how things could get a little hairy... at any rate, there is my 2 cents worth (or is that 5 cents? : )

Oracle 10g Installtion error Network Configuration requirements ... failed
Checking Network Configuration requirements ...
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned IP addresses; However, before you can do this, you must configure the Microsoft LoopBack Adapter to be the primary network adapter on the system. See the Installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP.Are you installing Oracle 10G R2? If this is the case then for DHCP network environments, you need to create a Microsoft loop back adapter.
Microsoft Loopback Adapter creation:
===========================
Step 1: Programs -> control panel -> Add Hardware.
Step 2: In the Add Hardware wizard. Click 'Next' and select 'Yes, I have already connected the hardware'. option and click on 'Next'.
Step 3: Select the last option 'Add a new hardware device' from the 'Installed hardware' window and click on 'Next'.
Step 4: Select the last option 'Install hardware that I manually select from the list (Advanced) and click on 'Next'.
Step 5: Select 'Network adapters' in 'Common hardware types' list and click on 'Next'.
Step 6: Where you can see 'Microsoft loopback adapter' on the right hand side of the frame.
Step 7: proceed with all default installation and then try installing Oracle.
I hope this will suffice.
Thanks

Edited by: user3533384 on Jul 10, 2009 6:12 AMAre you talking about the Enterprise Manager Console provided by the oracle or some other enterprise software? If it is enterprise software then you need to the do the proper setting for network connection to database. Probably you will have to configure tnsname.ora and sqlnet.ora. Can you connect through SQL*Plus utility? Go to Run-->SQLPLUSW type in the username password and tnsnames entry for the database. See if you can connect. If not post us the error message.

Oracle oleDB generates lots of network traffic than Microsoft Oledb
Hi,
When calling the same stored proc. that returns a ref cursor, Oracle Oledb (1.34 MB) generates alot of network traffic than Microsoft Oledb (0.06 MB). The statistic is gathered using Windows 2000 Network Monitoring tools.
Calling the same stored proc. that returns a ref cursor
Oracle OleDB Microsoft Oledb
Byte Received: 1408026 (1.34 M) 71032 (0.06 M)
Byte Sent: 306468 (0.29M) 69914 ( 0.067M)
Frame: 1263 414
Network Utilization: 6%-14% 1%-3%
Anyone know why is this case?
JoeWhen working with ADO and VB6, I looked at the database server with SQL Trace and found that each dynamic SQL statement was parsed twice per execution. REF CURSORs certainly require several network round-trips in order to retrieve schema information for the dataset to be created. This behaviour probably increases network load.
Unfortunately, I have not found any description of Oracle's OLEDB implementation. Hopefully, things will get better with the new, native OleDb data adapter.
/Armin

multiple parsing of SELECTs O/S : N/A POST: REPLY (W/QUOTE)

System: OLEDB provider 8.1.7, server 8.1.7.
Our VB code dynamically assembles SELECT statements and fetches recordsets with ADO function Recordset::Open. SQL TRACE shows that those SELECTs are parsed twice per execution. SELECTs embedded in stored procedures are parsed only once during the SP's life time (but then the stored procedure call itself is parsed once per execution).
Parsing twice per execution consumes a lot of CPU. REF Cursors might reduce parsing but cause additional network roundtrips.
How could I reduce the parse count? -
Problem with Oracle 10g RAC VIP network setting at Solaris 9
Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.
With OS solaris 9, and 2 nodes.
The nodes setting as the following:
nodes 1:
Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)
nodes 2:
Public address: 172.16.0.122
Private address: 192.168.0.122, 192.168.1.122
And i have assigned two IP adress 172.16.0.131, 172.16.0.132 as the VIP address for the
RAC.
And the following is the /etc/hosts file:
root@shk01 # cat /etc/hosts
# Internet host table
127.0.0.1 localhost
# public address
172.16.0.121 shk01 loghost
172.16.0.122 shk02
# heart beat
192.168.0.121 shk01-priv1
192.168.1.121 shk01-priv2
192.168.0.122 shk02-priv1
192.168.1.122 shk02-priv2
# VIP address
172.16.1.131 vip-shk01
172.16.1.132 vip-shk02
But when i run the command "$ ./runcluvfy.sh comp nodecon -n shk01,shk02 -verbose"
it shows the error:
ERROR:
Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.
Result: Node connectivity check failed.
I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?
Thanks,
XentarYou don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

Performance: Bulk Insert Oracle 10g
Following Situation: We have a VISUAL BASIC 6 Application (I know ... VB6 ... ), an XML-File with data and an Oracle 10g database. The XML-File has to be imported in the database.
Up to now the Application (Via ADO) analyses the XML-File and creates INSERT and UPDATE Stmts and sends them to the DB. The Stmts will be handled within one Transaction and the application sends each INSERT, UPDATE separate to the database.
But this is a performance desaster... as expected ... :-) The import takes several hours ...
Now, my task is to increase the performance, but how .....
I tried several things, but without the real success, e.g. ...
I performed some tests with the SQl*Loader. The Insert is really fast, but I can't make an Update, so I had to delete the existing data first. But I can't proceed the two steps in one transaction, because of the SQL*Loader.
I tried to write a stored procedure which accepts an ADO.Recordset as input param and then creates the Insert and Update statements within the DB to reduce network traffic, but I didn't find a way to handle a ADO.Recordset as a input parameter for a stored procedure.
Has someone an idea how I can import the XML file in a fast way into the existing DB (and maybe make an Replace of existing records during the import ...) within one transaction without changing the structure of the DB ??? (Oracle packages?? interface in C++ integrated in VB6....) Is there an way to import the XML-File directly to the DB?
Thanks in advance for any idea :-))I tried to write a stored procedure which accepts an ADO.Recordset as input param ...., but I didn't find a way to handle a ADO.Recordset as a input parameter
for a stored procedure.Use SYS_REFCURSOR as the parameter type. Bulk collect it into a PL/SQL collection. Use FORALL to soup up the INSERT and UPDATE statements.

Please help us to solve the issue. From your own posting you may have the clue, if you try to access your mail server through telnet and it is not successful, it means the service is down or there are networking issues.
On pre 10gR2 versions there was a bug 4083461.8. It could affect you if you are on 10gR1
"Bug 4083461 - UTL_SMTP.OPEN_CONNECTION in shared server fails with ORA-29278 Doc ID: Note:4083461.8"
This was fixed on 10gR2 base and on 9.2.0.8.0

How to avoid of application running on Oracle 10g to be copied?
I am a newbie to the security issues, so I need your help, please, where to start / what to read:
I have an application running across many customers on Oracle 10g. I have faced lately that our users
can use their daily backups to establish a totaly new database on a same / different server
and point our application to use it as well.
Is there any way to avoid it? F.e. I thought to use SELECT * FROM v$instance; to get the server instance details, and
in result with some other function to obtain, let say, local server's (WIN2003) details,
such as HD Serial Number, MAC number or so and then to check these values each time user runs the application.
Is it the correct way? What are the basics here at all?
Many thanks in advance to all!A lot of enterprises, however, actively avoid systems which are locked down to a particular server for very legitimate reasons. If my data center dies in the middle of the night, I sure don't want to have to call your mobile phone so that you can get to a computer, log in to the office network, and get me a new key so that I can finish my emergency failover. If I've got dozens of applications, I absolutely don't want to do that with dozens of different vendors.
It sounds like your problem, though, isn't that users are installing your software on multiple computers it's that they are accessing functionality they haven't licensed. That is generally a much easier problem to solve and doesn't require you to lock anything down to a particular machine. You can create a table LICENSED_CONTENT, for example,
CREATE TABLE licensed_content (
client_id NUMBER,
content_type VARCHAR2(30),
key RAW(128)
)In this case, KEY is, say, a hash (using the DBMS_CRYPTO or DBMS_OBFUSCATION_TOOLKIT packages if you'd like) of the client_id, content_type, and a bit of salt (i.e. a fixed string that only you know). When you sell a license to manage diamond content, you provide a script that inserts the appropriate row in the LICENSED_CONTENT table. When your application starts up, it reads the LICENSED_CONTENT table and verifies the hash before allowing users to access that type of content. This allows legitimate customers to move the software from one system to another but prevents them from accessing new functionality without a new license.
