Oracle 10g on VMWare

I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer regarding Oracle 10g on VMWare. On one page, Oracle states that "Oracle will not support production deployments of Oracle software on VMware" (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/vmware/cookbook/index.html). However, the Metalink article it references states "Oracle will provide support of the Oracle Stack on VMware. If a problem is investigated where Oracle software gives a problem specifically when running on a VMware virtual machine, and it can be reproduced on a physical PC, a bug will be submitted to development for resolution. Any issues which are VMware
specific will be referred back to VMware for support."
Now I'm stuck in a difficult position: I have a production database installed on a VMware device that is seriously sucking wind (mostly related to disk I/O and swap, either the VMware device or the ESX server it's running on) and I have contradictory information from Oracle. Does anyone have any insight into a formal position from Oracle?
Without a definitive answer, I need to figure out a way to tune what I have to squeeze every last drop of performance from the VMware device. I am running Oracle 10gR2 in 9.2.0.6 compatibility mode. I am running RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 ES, update 7. The VMware device has 2 CPUs and 2 GB of RAM (the most this version of ESX can provide is ~3.5 GB but I start running into issues because the ESX server is oversubscribed at that amount of RAM). The database is doing mostly OLTP and is approximately 150 GB in size.
Any assistance / guidance is greatly appreciated.

I
start running into issues because the ESX server is
oversubscribed at that amount of RAM). The database
is doing mostly OLTP and is approximately 150 GB in
size.Do you think being oversubscribed on the memory might be a factor to why you are seeing high I/O and swapping?
What they stating is that Oracle will support the product in VMWare providing the problem can be reproduced on a physical machine. Oracle is not alone in this regard, many other companies are taking the same position.

  • Oracle 10g RAC VMware support

Is Oracle 10g RAC supported in a production VMware environment yet? If not, what is the hold up? VMware is the standard in the industry now and not being able to virtulize is both costly and not practical.

As the previous responder points out, whilst Oracle does not actively certify its products in VMWare environments, it will provide support provided the issue is already known on the guest OS, or it can be reproduced outside a VMWare environment.
I know of many organisations running VMWare with RAC, including my own although we tend NOT to use it in Production environments. Oracle has many resource management capabilities built in to the RDBMS and the Grid Infrastructure which only work well if Oracle has control of all of the resources on a server.
I guess if you're not satisfied with our responses, you should direct your question to Oracle Support rather than this forum. Certification of VMWare is probably as much (or may be mostly) a business decision by Oracle and us Forum members can't generally explain those decisions.

I am installing Oracle RAC on 2 virtual machines using RHEL 3-U7, basically I have been able to install RAC and the software for the database. However when I run dbca to configure ASM, I get

  • Oracle 10g + VMware Workstation 6.5 = data block corruption?

I'm trying to run Oracle 10g on VMWare Workstation 6.5 (host and guest are windows 2003)
I've noticed a couple times that I easily get block corruptions and wonder if there are some settings to lower the risk.
Note this is a DEV machine, not a production machine.
I don't know if Oracle supports the set up but I'm sure many people are running Oracle in Vmware so I'm looking to those who have done so successfully.
Anyone know of special precautions in either Vmware or Oracle config to limit the risk on block corruption?
According to VMWare, ESX is a perfect platorm so maybe I should move from Workstation to ESX, maybe it has to do with Windows in VM and Linux would work better.
Anyone has some info on why Oracle has block corruption on VMware Workstation (windows/windows)?
Other people with positive/negative experience on VMWare Workstation (mention OS's and Oracle version please)

Well, it's indeed not for production, I use it for product demos and small development tasks, there is no critical data in my database but I wished I could run Oracle inside a VM on my laptop...
It works reasonably well (I even have run multiple VM's (Workstation) with Oracle insde on 1 laptop (4 GB Ram, Core Duo), but sooner or later it gives some problems. If there is any setting that can lower the risk would be great.
I was thinking of installing ORacle VM but apparently my laptop is not compatible with that (nor with ESX for that matter).
Anyone use plain Xen (which seems to support any processor) + Oracle on Linux ??
I can't install Oracle natively on the machine directly since I need the capabilities of a VM in respect of easy backup + I have many different applications and databases so depending on what I need to show, I just start a different VM
The VM provides the capabilities to move back to previous situation, exchaning demos with collegues, have multiple parallel copies with different configurations (depending on customer), etc...
... installing natively is too much of hassle, we used to swap hard disks but that's a pain when the hardware changes, at least with VMWare WS you can run it on pretty much any computer.
How do other people deal with this type of situation?? We have ESX on a hosted environment but internet access is not always available...
It seems stable enough to run my demos (I'm doing this for quite a while but the block corruption seems to happen sooner or later)
The problem is that I first need to get the demo installed without corruptions. Once it's installed I can just restart from that situation over and over again, but obviously I don't want to run the risk of having a disk corruption in the middle of a demo.

  • Oracle 10g RAC on 2 VMware Windows 2003 images corrupts image

It happened twice on each of the 2 VMware workstation 5 on which I am trying to set up an Oracle 10g R2 RAC. After installing CRS and rebooting machine I lost access to the Network Connections and the Disk Management. Basically I have to create a new image. Before I start a third time I would appreciate advice or feedback from other users.
Also Configuration Assistants failed to install.

Thanks for replying G, a while ago when installing Oracle 10g try it but can not remember if not needed, or if I could not do, in fact my Oracle 10G me work just that sometimes I can not connect to the database from sqlplus, I was seeing the guide that I spent, but I have a doubt in this part:
    For example:
    10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
The part I do not understand is the mycomputer.mydomain.com, here would have to put the same domain address with which I make the connection to sqlplus? in my case would be something like:
    http://computer1-5e7e5ee1a10:5560
How to add the Host would be this?:
    10.10.10.10 computer1-5e7e5ee1a10 computer1
I hope I can help. Greetings and thank you very much

    Hi,
My host OS is Windows-7. Docs. posted on this forum for RAC on VMware says: your Host OS should be Centos OS and in which you will install VMware and Client tools also. In this way u can clone another RAC2 machine.

I want to install Oracle-10g RAC on my Laptop. Please any suggestions or Docs. related to this.

  • Oracle 10g installation on Windows 2008 VMware

    Hi everybody,
hope you can help me with that issue; I try to install a ECC 6.0 test-system with Oracle 10g on a Windows 2008 VMware instance.
I am getting a strange error when executing sapserver.cmd when I try to install the Oracle software; the Oracle Universal Installer 10.2 is aborting at the very beginning with an error popup with following content. First I enter the Drive letter for installation and SID and then OUI trys to start...
The program was not closed properly. An internal error occured. Please provide Oracle support with following datas:
    "unknown"
    "unknown"
    "unknown"
Any ideas? I did not find anything in Metalink or on the SAP Marketplace. And I am aware that Oracle is not official supported on VMWare; on Windows 2003 I did not occur any similar problems.
    kind regards
    Philipp

The OUI doesn´t work (yet) on Windows 2008, you will need to wait for the OUI 10.2.0.4.

  • Oracle 10G Non-Network install - OEM will not start when on the LAN.

    Greetings,
Got through a non-networked 10G Enterprise installation OK; I chose to create the orcl schema, connected to it through various utilities, added new tablespace, and all was well. I also checked my Host Name by pinging it in DOS, it showed me the IP address of the MS loopback adapter which is what I was expecting.
Once I connected the same machine to the LAN (and internet) and re-booted, for some reason the Host Name was now assigned the dynamic IP address of the LAN and not LAN2 (which is the loopback adapter that is assigned a static local IP address). It did this even though I had already added an entry in the /etc/hosts file that explicitly assigns a static IP address to the Host Name (as recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions). I also could not get the OEM to launch a webpage, run and connect to the orcl database after the re-boot; I am wondering if this is related to the IP address assigned to Host Name changing; maybe the Oracle agent can no longer resolve the URL for some reason?
In the end I find that the only way to insure I can have a working Oracle environment and be on an active network at the same time, is to bring up the Oracle environment on a standalone system first, and once Oracle is running connect the system to the network. Is there no way to automate this process?
The format of the hosts file entry recommended by the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions is as follows:
    ===========================================================
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
    where:
IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered for the loopback adapter.
hostname is the name of the computer.
domainname is the name of the domain.
    For example:
    10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
    ==========================================================
In my case since I am not part of a Windows domain (but am part of a Windows Workgroup), I added an entry in the /etc/host file that looks like the following:
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    # For example:
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.110.250 IBM-6AB1330E158
==> Note that I did not add the domain name to the entry I created since I am not part of a domain, I also used the format I found in the etc/hosts file which is:
    IP_address hostname.domainname
    - not -
    IP_address hostname.domainname hostname
Which is the format recommended in the Oracle 10G pre-installation instructions; this does leave me wondering which format is correct...
Thanks in Advance for any help,
    ADG13

I have not. I am hoping someone (maybe even from Oracle support) will step up and officially tell us we are either right or wrong in the way we are approaching this. From the research I have done on the internet it sounds like this should work, you should be able to have Oracle starting and running fine whether you boot connected to the LAN or not, assuming you have created the MS loopback adapter, assigned it a static IP, and changed the hostname entry in etc/hosts file as part of the 10G WinXP recommended pre-installation instructions.
And yet I find I have to start Oracle when I am not connected to the LAN or the services will not start correctly. If this is a "feature" then hopefully someone will tell us and maybe give us a workaround or give us an idea if this will be addressed in a future release. Having said that and in fairness to the Oracle product; being a developer I have other products installed on my machine that have special networking setup needs also, and in my case this could be exasperating or even possibly causing this Oracle problem I am having. To be specific I have software for 2 different VPNs installed so I can tunnel into 2 private networks. One of these VPNs require me to make use of a DNS Suffix (as shown below) which might be contributing to my problems, not sure. I also have VMWare installed which uses it own network adapters when it is running, so you can see how things could get a little hairy... at any rate, there is my 2 cents worth (or is that 5 cents? : )

    You know its not certified?
My first thought when I read the subject of this thread, and before reading what you posted, is that you've either done no research on RAC or didn't understand what you've read.
You can create a RAC cluster using any operating system certified by Oracle.
But the operating system is the least important part of creating a cluster. The questions you need to be able to address are:
    1. What is your solution to created shared storage?
    2. What is your solution to create the cache fusion interconnect and VIPs?
If you don't have an answer to these questions you can not build a RAC cluster.

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
