DBA or db ? You can use oradim to control the database instance startup with the service startup. Please read,

Oracle 10g is obsolete.  Oracle 11g is already at terminal release.
Have you installed the Oracle rdbms software?
Installing Oracle and Building the Database
If you are going to be a professional DBA, you need to learn to
    1) read the documentation
    2) wean yourself from dependence on pictures and GUIs.
    3) read the documentation
    =================================================
Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career.  To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to  docs.oracle.com.
Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth.  They are reference manuals.  Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - *Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual*.
    - Take a look in your alert log.  One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - *When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again*.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

  • Oracle 10g Express Edition for DBA practice

    Hi,
I want to download the Oracle Express Edition 10g for my database administration which I want to practice at home.I have a windows vista x64 with me which i recently purchased.i am getting a little confused about the edition available in the Oracle -->Downloads site.Is the express edition which is available only for development or can I use it for my database admin purpose too.
Since am new to this field ,I will be grateful if I can get some pointers to what edition of Oracle 10g should i download and from where.I am a DBA and need some practice at home.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Somdatta

    Supported Windows Versions
One of the following 32-bit Windows operating systems:
    * Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later
    * Windows Server 2003
    * Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or later
Oracle Database 10g XE is not certified for windows vista 64-bit.
Although you can see only a few Windows versions supported, you can still try and run DB XE on other versions as well as far as you don't look up to Oracle to resolve your issues. But Oracle Database 10g XE can not be installed on 64-bit windows, thats for sure.
So, if you are done with choosing your platform, you are left with only one option i.e HYPERVISORS.
So you'll have to first use any HYPERVISOR and create a Virtual Machine and then install a Guest 32-bit windows ( or Linux if you prefer) and then run Oracle DB on it.
One of the most famous vendors in business for the purpose is VMWare. But there are other options available as well including open source/free.
For downloading the software you can get to the following link and download Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Universal)

  • Oracle 10g  Report Server is Not Starting Up?

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle 10g Developer Suite (10.1.2.0.2) and OS is Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 32-Bit, i have run this Command rwserver server = server name start for starting up my report server,it show error message REP-56105: Engine {0} died with error:* and report server status is shutdown.
    Please Advice,
    Thank You
    Shan

    1) Please post the version of Reports and the OS because some problems could be version specific and OS specific
    2) Enable tracing
    Edit
    $OH\reports\conf\server_name.conf
And uncomment "trace" element. It should be like this
    <trace traceOpts="trace_all"/>
Now we can see the engine trace also in logs directory. That may throw some light about the issue.
    3) Please try the following in conf file
Comment the url engine element if you are not planning to use url engine
    <!--engine id="rwURLEng" .... /-->
    4) Increase callback timeout for rwEng engine element in conf file
    <engine id="rwEng" class="oracle.reports.engine.EngineImpl" initEngine="1" maxEngine="1" minEngine="0" engLife="50" maxIdle="30" callbackTimeOut="60000">
Increase callbackTimeOut (make it 1.5 or double or something) and try

  • Oracle 10g Diff in execution plan query with binding var Vs without

We recently did 10g upgrade. In 10g, execution plan differs for query with binding var(thru jdbc etc) Vs without it as given below. For query with binding var,
it chooses poor execution plan(no index is used, full scan is done etc). everything worked fine in 9i. To rectify the problem, we have to hint query with right index, join etc. but i dont like this solution.
I would rather prefer to correct database to choose right execution path instead of eacy query level. but not sure what causes the issue.
Does anybody came across this issue? if so, Please share your experiences. Thanks for the help. Do let me know if you need more info.
    1. Query without binding bar:
    select * from test where col1 = :1 and col2 = :2
    1. Query without binding bar:
select * from test where col1 = 'foo' and col2= 'bar'

I am not an expert but in my humble opinion it is the developer's responsability to ensure the correct explain plan is used before deploying code to production, if the explain plan returned by the DB is bad, then the use of a hint is perfectly acceptable.
    Check this out: http://lcgapp.cern.ch/project/CondDB/snapshot/performance.html
    Excerpt:
Bind variable peeking. If an SQL query contains bind variables, the optimal execution plan may depend on the values of those variables. When the Oracle query optimizer chooses the execution plan for such a query, it may indeed look at the values of all bind variables involved: this is known as "bind variable peeking".
In summary, the execution plan used for a given SQL query cannot be predicted a priori because it depends on the presence and quality of statistics and on the values of bind variables used at the time the query was first executed (hard-parsed). As a consequence of this instability of execution plans, very different performances may be observed for the same SQL query. In COOL, this issue is addressed by adding Oracle hints to the queries, to make sure that the same (good) plan is used in all cases, even with unreliable statistics or unfavourable bind variables.

  • Oracle 10G on Win XP

I would like to know where can I find the instruction to install Oracle 10G on a Win XP machine. I have the following disk:
    1. - Oracle DB 10G Rel 3 (10.1.0.2) Windows 32 Bits
    2. - Oracle 10G Client
And I would like to know if I need to install both disks. I'm developments that also do DBD roles.
    Thanks!

I think you might find that in the "Quick Installation Guide for Microsoft Windows" at

  • When i installed oracle 10g am not able to start my application

    Hi all,
Am using ATG 9.1 my application is running fine, but after i installed oracle 10g my Jboss is starting up but i could not run my application?
It is saying that Requested Url cannot be found.......
Could you please tell me why this happens..........
    Thanks in advance......
    Thanks&Regards,
    Sudhakar.

This happens in oracle 10g because oracle 10g also uses 8080 as the default http port.
And if your application server is also running on default 8080 port u ll see this issue.
For resolving this, all you need to do is change the default 8080 port of oracle to some other port number.
See the following link to change the port.
    http://daust.blogspot.in/2006/01/xe-changing-default-http-port.html
After changing the port, restart your machine once and you should be able to access your application fine.

  • "Oracle XE 10g Net listener" don't start with Fedora Core 5

    Please help me !
First when I set up Oracle XE with "/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure" the system stop on "listener starting" during several minutes.
When FC5 is starting, (after reboot), the system stops severals minutes on "Oracle net listener Starting". Then, when I use SQLPlus TERM, I can't connect in "system".
So I supose that Oracle don't work.
Finally, when I use web navigator with "http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex" adress, the navigator shows "page not found".

  • Oracle 10g Database Setup Won't Start on Win XP Pro

I am new to Oracle and have just downloaded the 10g database from the Oracle website and am trying to install it on my Windows XP Professional Machine. When I double click "setup.exe" the hourglass timer appears very briefly but then nothing happens. Does anyone know why this would be? Thanks.

Try using the setup.exe in the install folder instead. If that doesn't work, verify that your download was ok (you should be able to verify the size of the downloaded file with that on the download page of OTN) and also verify that your hardware meets the minimum requirements for installation (see documentation in your doc folder).

  • Oracle 10g Rel 2  - Proxy connection authentication with SAP User ID

    Dear Experts,
We are currently doing some research and planning to upgrade SAP R/3 4.6C to ECC 6 and upgrading Oracle from version 9.2 to 10.2
In upgrading to Oracle vers. 10g Rel 2, we got advised that Oracle has apparently introduced a new proxy connection authentication, in which the SAP user ID is given limited privileges (create session only) ??
If you have any information on this or known any impact about this issue, please advise us.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your help, Kaushal.
I also found the SAP Note 834917 (Oracle Database 10g: New database role SAPCONN and it seems to be on a right direction to cope with that problem.
    - For Oracle releases earlier than 10gR2, the CONNECT role includes extensive database authorizations and the more restrictive CONNECT as of 10gR2.
    - To overcome this restriction, SAP need to find a way to compensate this, so does it come SAPCONN.
    - SAPCONN is the new SAP-specific database role, which is defined to support the normal SAP applications operations (CONNECT, RESOURCE and SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE).
    Once again, thanks.
