Oracle 10g R2 - Unicode is converted to unknown ?
Ok, I've read a thousand posts. Tried everything still stuck.
I am using Oracle 10g : 10.2.0.5.0
I'm on a Mac, using SQL Developer 3.1.07
When I enter "ė€£¥©", the insertion into the database converts it to: ?
This is straight from a SQL INSERT command, in SQLDeveloper, no java code or anything.
I tried adding a file called SQLDeveloper.app/Resources/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper.conf and added these lines:
-Doracle.jdbc.defaultNChar=true
-Doracle.jdbc.convertNcharLiterals=true
Didn't help.
I tried created a test column and made the datatype NVARCHAR2. same results. VARCHAR column does the same corruption but that's expected.
I tried N'©' - doesn't work
I tried INSERT INTO testchar (column1) VALUES ( unistr('©') );
results is still :
I check NSL_NVAR_CHARACTERSET and it's UTF8

I have read that the insertion into the database does its own conversion but I don't know if that applies to me since I'm in 10g R2

NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET specifies the encoding of the NVARCHAR2 variables but not the SQL statements. SQL statements, when they arrive to the database server, are always encoded in the database character set (NLS_CHARACTERSET). This is true for the whole statement, including any character literals. Therefore, even if a literal is valid in SQL Developer (which works in Unicode), when the literal arrives to the database, it is already stripped of all characters that the database character set does not support. The characters are not actually removed but they are converted to a replacement character. In case of the US7ASCII database character set, anything non-ASCII is lost.
The trick to avoid this problem is to:
- mark the literals that need to be preserved for NVARCHAR2 columns as NVARCHAR2 literals by prefixing them with "n".
- set the mentioned property to activate the client side encoding mechanism with basically does a rough parsing of the statement and replaces all N-literals with U-literals. Undocumented U literals are similar to UNISTR calls. They encode non-ASCII characters with Unicode escape sequences. For example, n'€' (U+20AC) is encoded as u'\20AC'. As u'\20AC' contains only ASCII characters, it arrives to the database unchanged. The SQL parser recognizes the U-literals and converts them (unescapes them) to NVARCHAR2 constants before further SQL processing, such as INSERT.

Migration using data pump Oracle 10g - Oracle 11g
HI all,
1)
Right now I`m using Oracle 11g. I have a plan to import data from Oracle 10g. I would like to know if its possible to import data which was exported by datapump on Oracle 10g ?
Should I convert somehow expdp output from Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g format ?
2)
Next question is. If I will use expdp to create dump of complete database. May I use *.dmp to import selected users ? Or only full database can be restored ?Yes, you can import 10g dump into an 11g database.
Maybe you should take some time and read the section on datapump in the fine Oracle® [Database Utilities|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28319/dp_import.htm#i1007324] manual.

How to know whether my oracle 10g instalation in unicode supported or not
Hi
i am new to oracle. I have installed Oracle 10g client and server.
I want to know whether the database created can store unicode data/arabic data.
Please guide me how can i find whether unicode support is on for my db or not.
The outputs of some of the queries run by me are as follows:
SQL> HOST ECHO $NLS_LANG;
$NLS_LANG
SQL> HOST ECHO %NLS_LANG%;
%NLS_LANG%
SQL> @.[%NLS_LANG%];
SP2-0310: unable to open file ".[AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252]"
SQL> select cust_eng_name,cust_arb_name from custmast;
select cust_eng_name,cust_arb_name from custmast
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

1. Yeh that is the thing I want. What are the other steps that i need to do with my Oracle Client/Server for unicode support.
Where i am getting trouble is the Oracle Client/Server unicode support.
And how to decide what character set will suite me best.1. If your application is going to be a "true" Unicode application, you can set the NLS_LANG registry/environment setting on your clients to ".UTF8" to enable true Unicode support.
2. Your database needs to support Unicode, too.
The recommended database character set for this in 10g is "AL32UTF8".
If you currently have a single-byte database character set (WE8MSWIN1252), you need to decide how to get this done.
If you can simply create a new database using the "AL32UTF8" character set, this would be the easiest way.
There are several documents available (e.g. on Oracle MetaLink) that describe in detail how to convert the character set of an existing database. Depending on your data this can be a tedious task involving several steps, so may be creating a new database and exporting/importing the data might be the simplest choice if you need to migrate some existing data.
The recommended national character set is "AL16UTF16", by the way, but that shouldn't matter that much once you have a Unicode enabled database using "AL32UTF8" as database character set.
2. How to set/retrive the "Database Character Set" and "National Character Set". This has already been answered partly. Retrieve:
Database Character Set:
SELECT VALUE FROM NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS WHERE PARAMETER = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';National Character Set:
SELECT VALUE FROM NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS WHERE PARAMETER = 'NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET';In most of the cases you can't just simply set/alter the character sets, as outlined above.

ExtStringTemplate Warning while Converting a SQLServer DB to Oracle 10g
Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right Forum to ask about this. I apologize if I misplaced it
I am currently having some trouble with the migration of a MSSQL Database (2000 with all its stored Procedures) to ORACLE 10g. I am using the offline Capture Method to generate the captured Model without any errors or warnings.
But as soon as I convert the Captured Model to the ORACLE Model I get a bunch of Warning Messages that read as follows:
Oracle.dbtools.migration.parser.ext.ExtStringTemplate.setValue(ExtStringTemplate.java:134)
Clicking on Details does not give any further clues on which Object caused it during conversion.
During the last few Days I tried to find Information about this Warning Message searching several Blogs and Forums, but to no avail.
I would like to know how I could solve this problem or if it even might influence the applications later on that are supposed to work with the converted Database.
Any help with this is highly appreciated

The conversion process completes with a few errors that I'm going to fix by hand.
--Is there anymore to the Exception ?
Concerning the Details button: When I click Details it only shows the same exception Message as posted above. Unfortunatly no stacktrace. But maybe there is some kind of logfile outside the IDE which I am not aware of yet, since I am rather new to working with sql developer. If you could point me to the stacktrace I will be happy to post it here.
--Can you skim through some of your converted procedures to see if anything stands out
I did as you suggested. There was a strange behaviour in a Procedure where there was a construct like N'<somestring>' in the original Transact SQL. Somehow every SQL statement that follows is recognized as a String, hence the code is not compiling at all.
There are also some Prcedures which exit with the message: "unexpected end of Subtree"

Problem in Converting Database into Archivelog mode (Oracle 10G)
Hi Team,
I come across a strange problem in the ORACLE 10G Server.
I am converting database mode from NoArchivelog to Archivelog mode through RMAN in 10G.

.export ORACLE_SID=<SID>

it will connect to the default SID, there's no such thing as a default SID, what do you mean?
But what if there are more that one SID available & I
want to connect to SID other than the default SID.just specify the desired SID prior starting rman.
more over the same string is working with 9i but not
with 10G.maybe due to a bug?
to summarize, you have two options it you would like to start up the instance:
either you specify the SID prior starting rman and use os authentication
or
you register the instance statically and use oracle authentication.

Oracle 10g function to convert GML 3.1.1 to SDO_GEOMETRY
In Oracle 11g there is a function available to convert GML 3.1.1 to SDO_GEOMETRY (SDO_UTIL.FROM_GML311GEOMETRY)
However I need to support this in Oracle 10g that does not contain this function.
Does anybody have this function for me in Java or PL/SQL?
The Java classes GML, GML2, GML3 and GML 3g do not support GML 3.1.1 (with <patches>)
Thanks for any help!
RonHi Ron,
I would second John's advice to go Simon's Java route as probably the best way to go if you are truly trapped on 10g. Note that were you to consider going the PLSQL route, the 10g XMLTYPE has a limitation of 64K for the payload of any XML tag. This means any GML linestring or polygon with more than 64K of coordinate data would not be possible to store or manipulate as XMLTYPE.
ORA-31167: 64k size limit for XML node
This makes using XMLTYPE tools to work with GML a bit of a bust on 10g. Moving to 11g is definitely something you want to consider if GML is in your requirements. Also, as a GML user please consider putting in an enhancement request to Oracle Spatial to support GML 3.2 and 3.3 (feel free to piggy back on 9788193).
Oracle Spatial and support for GML 3.2.1?
The 3.3 spec is due out any day now. The existing 11g reader/writer almost works with the new specs if they just added a few tweaks for gml:id and the namespace.
Cheers,

and what we are doing now is we are trying to convfert the data which is in Suchi to other regoinal language which is also in bilinguilar font .
i have vb program where i have written code to convert from suchi software to our softwre (Nudi).
Main problem comes here when i access the records in oracle tables i wont be able to get the correct input. ie when i get the data some glyph code s will get to change and i wont get the correct data. hence conversion is not possible for me .
can any one help out regarding this matter.

How to convert varchar to BLOB in oracle 10g?

I would like to concatinate these 2 columns and convert them into BLOB in oracle 10g.

2 (txt varchar2(10)
3 ,other varchar2(10)
4 );
Table created.
SQL>
SQL> insert into test values ('some text', 'other text');
1 row created.
SQL>
SQL> create table test2
2 (col blob)
3 /
Table created.
SQL>
SQL> insert into test2
2 select utl_raw.cast_to_raw (txt||other)
3 from test
4 /
1 row created.
SQL> select *
2 from test2
3 /
SP2-0678: Column or attribute type can not be displayed by SQL*Plus
SQL>
SQL> select utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2(col)
2 from test2
3 /
UTL_RAW.CAST_TO_VARCHAR2(COL)
some textother text
SQL>
SQL> drop table test

Converting SQL statements from MS server 2000 to Oracle 10g
We are moving over from MS server 2000 to Oracle 10g as our database for Peoplesoft system.
There are several embedded SQL statements that I need to investigate to see what needs converting.
So far I can see a need to convert the following:
Dates. GetDate() to ?
Outer joins. *= to LEFT OUTER JOIN
Has anyone else done a similar exercise and what other functions do I need to convert?
Thanks.Hello
A quick google search (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=ms+sql+server+oracle+differences&spell=1)
came up with this:

There's a quite a few more sites listed.

Converting Informix data to Oracle 10g
Hi,
We are planning to convert data on Informix 5.x based legacy system over to Oracle 10g.
Wondering if anyone would like to share some light on this process, experience, use of Oracle or Other tools..
Regards,
SubhashAre you looking to convert your data alone or do you wish to maintain the structure of the your legacy system? If you wish to retain the structure of your legacy system then something like like the oracle workbench may be what you are looking for. If you are just trying to convert your data from one database application to another then you just need an analyst map out your conversion needs and a good conversion programmer to convert the data.

Convert Window Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 11g
HI Experts
My current version is Oracle 10g on Window and i want to convert on Oracle 11g on Linux.
What will be the best way to convert it ? can possible to direct convert
or i need to be database migration from window Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 10g and then covert from Linux Oracle 10g to Linux Oracle 11g.
If the direct conversion is possible then please let me know the way or if u have document then please share it.
I searched lot but i didn't get anything.....
Thanks in advanceWhat is the expected downtime duration ?
What is the database size ?
For a "small" database with no downtime constraint you could use Data Pump to move data.
For a "large" database with minimum downtime you could use Oracle Streams (with Enterprise Edition) or Golden Gate (separate product: needs new licensing).
You can find detailed migration/upgrade recommendations and scenarios on OTN database upgrade page:

Oracle 10g - Defining the column name in Non English
Hi Experts,
I have an exisitng application which is developed on Windows using ASP Technology and uses Oracle 10g 10.1.0.2.0.
The application is supported with an instance of Data Base within which multiple tablespaces are created for different clients. The application is developed in such a way that some of the tables arecreated dynamically and the columns are named using the data entered through the UI.
This application needs to be globalized now. The problem is, the column name entered through the UI can be in any language based on the client's settings and those values in turn will be used for naming the columns in the tables.
1) Can I have the column names to be named using non english characters in Oracle 10g DB? If so,
1.1) what should I do to configure the exisiting Oracle instance to support it?
1.2) To what level is that configuration possible, is it per DB instance level (or) can it be done at Tablespace level. I would like to configure each tablespace to host tables with columns defined with different languages, say for example, tablespace 1 will have tables with Japaenese column names and tablespace 2 will have tables with German column names?
2) What should I do to make my entire DB to support unicode data i.e., to accept any language strings. Currently all strings are declared as VarChar2, should I change all VarChar2 to NVarChar2 (or) is there a way to retain the VarChar2 as is and make some database wide setting?
Please note that I do not have an option of retaining the column in English as per the Business Requirement.
Envionment:
OS - Windows 2003 32 bit
Oracle 10g 10.1.0.2.0
UI forms in ASP
TIA,
Prem1. Yes, you can.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá number(10));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values (10);
1 row created.1.1 and 1.2 and 2. You can choose UTF as your default character set. It allows the user of non-English characters in VARCHAR columns in your whole database. It is not per tablespace.
SQL> create table ÜÝÞ( ßàá varchar2(100));
Table created.
SQL> insert into ÜÝÞ values ('âãäçìé');
1 row created.
