Oracle 10g XE // Licensing question

Hi,
as far as i got till ow, the XE seams to be only limited in 3 ways:
- max 4GB user data
- max 1GB RAM actively used
- max 1 Processor used
However, this leads to some questions for me:
1. what is a "processor" defined as ? i this 1 cpu including multi cores or is this just 1 core? (regarding the new Xeons we have e.g. 2 CPUs with 2 Cores each with Hyperthreading makes em 4 Cores on each physical CPU)
2. can multi XE be used for ditributed DB's ?
e.g. we have say 2 servers - 1 at company A (production and research) and 1 at company B (part production needed for comp. A). can they be connected together so that the main-DB is at company A and company B only has a part of the DB at company A? e.g. company A hast say 100 tables in their DB but B has only 15 tables to access and stored local for caching ? - if these distributed scenarios are possbiel, could you please point me to the docs for it?
Best Regards,
Korbinian

. what is a "processor" defined as I believe a dual core processor is counted as two CPU (that's certainly how Oracle calculate th elicencing for regular 10g). In the case of XE I think they've frigged the database so it will only use one CPU no matter how many CPUs the server actually has.
2. can multi XE be used for ditributed DB's ?As far as I'm aware you should be able to do single master replication with XE but not multi-master. But then most sensible people would not want to do multi-master replication anyway. You may find this article by Lewis Cunningham informative. The docs on replication are here.

  • Oracle 10G Express Newbie questions

    Hello everyone! I am completely new to oracle and I was wondering if you guys could answer some of my questions. I installed Oracle 10g Express rpm (oracle-xe-univ-10.2.0.1-1.0.i386.rpm) and Zend for oracle with the assumption that all the environmental variables would be set and everything would be ready. Unfortunately, this was not the case:
    The instructions say to setup the ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME but I don't know what those need to be. I'm assuming ORACLE_HOME can be any directory and ORACLE_BASE is the path to libraries or executables or something. This is not very clear to me in the instructions. By the way, X windows is not installed on my server so everything I do must be from the shell.
    My question are:
    1) On a standard rpm install of 10g Express, what should the environmental variables ORACLE_BASE & ORACLE_HOME be (installed in /usr/lib/oracle/ ) ?
    2) Assuming that X windows is not installed, what are the best ways to connect to the DB? sqlplus? http://www.test.com:8080/apex? clients?
    3) Can the windows client be used to connect to 10g Express on a linux server?

    The question is more appropriate in the XE forum at Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)

  • Oracle 10g CPU Licensing / Usage

    I have purchased a quad cpu license for 10g. The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU's. Can oracle be installed on this machine without having to increase the CPU license count? Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement?

    The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU'what sort of server is it? Are those CPUs single, dual or multi-core? There are different licensing multipliers for certain types of CPU. Find out more.
    Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement? No. This is an artifact of different chip architectures. It is possible to do this with Intel chips (I recently blogged about this whilst pondering why Oracle Express is available for Linux but not Mac or other Unixes) but Sun Sparc chips are harder.
    What you might be able to do (depending on your server) is hard-partione your server and install Oracle in a 4-processor partition. Supposedly Oracle will except Sun Solaris 10 Containers as a licensable partition but I would check with your account manager.

  • Oracle 9i Lite Licensing Question

    In my applictaion I plan to use only The local Oracle Lite Database. (Not the mobile server or sync or anything).
    Do the same licensing rules apply or can this be included free of charge if they customers have their oracle server licenses?
    BR
    Tim

    The installation media can be downloaded from the following link:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/index.html
    You will need to agree to the OTN license agreement before you download the software. The install media contains Personal, Standard or Enterprise. Each edition contains the SQL Worksheet.
    If you install the database on your PC, the install will include the client tools to connect to the database so there is no need to do a separate client install on the same machine.

  • Oracle 10g DB clustering question

    Hi All
    If I am going to cluster my db, what method/type of software should I use.

    Hi,
    The most suitable s/w changes by the thing which your DB regards as important.
    System requirements (ex SLA) , cost ...
    Oracle RAC is Acitve-Active cluster solution.
    All of node is active and can execute a sql.
    However, the license cost becomes very higher.
    I may be enough in Active-Stanby if a downtime is permitted at the time of instance failure.
    PowerHA(AIX)
    MC/ServiceGuard(HP-UX)
    SunCluster(Solaris)
    MSCS(Windows)

  • Oracle 10g Enterprise Manager DB control vs Enterprise Manager Console

    We have a consultant install Oracle 10g on Windows platform. Somehow, I only see Enterprise Manager Console installed and I can use this console to access database. I don't see Enterprise Manager Database Control installed. What difference between Console and DB control? Please advise.
    Thanks

    I see the interfaces are totally different. the console is more like Oracle 9i. I know the DB control is a web tool, just for Oracle 10g. My question is in terms of admin, which one is better? Why Oracle has different tool to manage Database?The Oracle Enterprise Manager Console is a Java Standalone client, not a 3-tier product like the EM DB Console.
    The Java Standalone client was deprecated in 10gR1. Probably since not all features had been ported to the 3-tier DB Console (eg: Spatial index management and Workspace Management), Oracle decided to let us use the Java Console as an extra install from the Client/Companion disk. However it is no longer available going forward into 11g.
    If you look at the 'Console' carefully, you will not that some areas are no longer functional and it does not cover all capability of 10g, for example in partitioning and indexing.

  • Oracle 10g R2 vs Oracle 10g;;;Plz Help Me

    Hi all;
    I'm preparing my first OCA exam ; Oracle Database 10g: Administration I. I 'm doing my preparation basically from 2 books ; Sybex Book OCA-Exam and All-in-One Exam Guide book.
    Both books 're based on the first release of Oracle 10g.
    My questions 're :
    - What's the diffrence between Oracle 10g R2 vs Oracle 10g R1?
    - What's New in Oracle 10g R2 (parameters, default parameters values, features...)?
    thanks a lot,

    Well satish has given link for the difference in both the versions. I shall add to this that at this moment of writing,there is not anything which makes the exams depend on the release 2.The sybex books would be good enough but I shall recommend to attend Oracle Univ training for the same.
    You can go ahead with the exam by preparing from these books, no issues would be there.

  • Replace 10g XE License agreement page

    Hi all,
    I have installed 10g XE in my windows system. I can access it from http://localhost:8080/apex. But if I want to share the application with I others, I think it would be better to put a index sort of page at localhost:8080.
    As of now, the URL http://localhost:8080/ return Oracle 10g XE license agreement page.
    Where is this page stored? Is it inside Oracle DB?
    It would be nice to change this to page with a custom built page. Is it possible to do that?
    I tried searching the forum, I could not find. Thanks for your help.
    Regards
    Guru

    You can also do it programmatically using the following script:
    DECLARE
       RESULT   BOOLEAN;
       l_html   VARCHAR2 (512);
       PROCEDURE remove_ressource (p_res_path IN VARCHAR2)
       IS
       BEGIN
          IF DBMS_XDB.existsresource (p_res_path)
          THEN
             DBMS_XDB.deleteresource (p_res_path, DBMS_XDB.delete_force);
          END IF;
       END;
    BEGIN
       l_html :=
          '<html>
      <head>
        <meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=/apex/f?p=100">
      </head>
    </html>
       remove_ressource (p_res_path => '/index.html');
       remove_ressource (p_res_path => '/index.htm');
       RESULT := DBMS_XDB.createresource ('/index.html', l_html);
       COMMIT;
    END;
    /This will redirect the user to application 100, but you can make it redirect to any url.

  • Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition user license in Standard Edition

    Hi,
    If I purchase Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition license (user or processor), and somehow if I decedided to downgrade the server from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition, is these license still valid to apply to the Standard Edition server??
    Thanks

    I'm sure Oracle would have no objection to you using a less expensive version, but you may want to run that question by your Oracle sales rep to see if there is a notification requirement.
    Whether there would be an opportunity to get some level of refund, though, would be a question for your Oracle sales rep. I would tend to doubt it but you never know.

  • ILM in Oracle 10g without enterprise license

    Hi,
    We have an ORacle 10G 2-node RAC setup for which we're looking to setup an ILM process to manage data growth. My questions are:
    Is Oracle ILM Assisstant available with Standard licensing? If so, does it make sense to use it w/o partitioning available?
    Are there other best practices or guidelies for implementing ILM just using SQL and PL/SQL and other features in the 10G standard license?We are fairly new to this ILM concept, so any help to get started on ILM with minimal costs would help.
    Thanks,
    JGP

  • Licensed version and free download from OTN of Oracle 10g DB

    I had a doubt with any difference with the licensed version and free download from OTN of Oracle 10g DB. We had downloaded a free version of oracle 10g
    database from OTN and are using it in our live environment. It seems to be working fine. We are trying to get a licensed copy of Oracle 10g DB also but that may take sometime. So, my doubt is whether the free download from OTN should not create any problems in our live environment.
    I hope, my question is clear.
    Please, help in solving the doubt.
    regards

    Hello,
    There is no difference whether you download from OTN or get so called licensed copy of oracle software. It's free to download and free to use you are using for personal eduction purpose, but if you are using for commercial purpose then you should contact oracle sales for pricing but you can continue with the same software. See following link for certification on different platform
