Oracle 10gR2 32-bit vs 64-bit...really a big issue?

Quick question regarding 32 bit and 64 bit Env. (Oracle DB's)
We have a client who is running a 64-bit production env. and we, the support provider are running a 32-bit env. Now our goal is usually to mimic the prod env., but should we also be on a 64 bit platform if there are major differences? I mean even our App might behave differently on a 64 bit then a 32 bit. I am curious if this is a big playing factor or something small and can be ignored.

besides performance issues, 64 bit platforms are installed and configured in a slightly different way than 32 bit platorms. It has to do with libraries for 64 vs. libraries for 32 bits. Just take a look at the installation forum, there are plenty of issues related with installation, patches (os and db related), prerequisites on the 64 vs 32 platforms.
If you are planning to play the support role, you wouldn't be able to reproduce any OS issue on a 32 bit platform and your support service wouldn't be at customer's expectancies.

    Hi ,
    we are using Solaris 10 containers. Oracle 10gR2 installation done with ASM in Non-global zone and it was successful, after applying patch set 3 CSS service unable to start and won't generate any error message.
    OS : solaris 10
    DB : Oracle 10gR2
    any pointer will help us to resolve this issue.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    Cause
    1) This is a LANG problem. So this can be confirmed by tracing the init.cssd script (executed by the init/inittab), as follow:
    h1:3:respawn:/etc/init.d/init.cssd run >/var/log/init-cssd.run 2>&1 </var/log/init-cssd.run
    2) /var/log/init-cssd.run log extract:
    TZ=
    + export TZ
    LANG=
    + export LANG
    + /bin/who -b
    + exit 0
    BOOTID= . system boot srp 7 16:44
    + /bin/cat /var/opt/oracle/scls_scr/db4/root/cssrun
    RUNID= . system boot Aug 7 16:44
    + [ . system boot srp 7 16:44 != . system boot Aug 7 16:
    44 ]
    + [ . system boot Aug 7 16:44 = startstack ]
    + exit 3
    STATUS=3
    + [ 3 != 0 ]
    + exit 3
    + [ 3 != 0 ]
    + /bin/sleep 30
    Solution
    1) Set the LANG environment variable in /etc/init.d/init.cssd script (in GETBOOTID section) to cs_CZ.ISO8859-2:
    # Set a null language id. GETBOOTID can also be sensitive to the language
    # codes, when init.cssd is run in a user shell compared to being run
    # under init. Setting a blank language code should guarantee consistency.
    LANG=cs_CZ.ISO8859-2
    2) Then CSS will start.
    $>crsctl check crs
    CSS appears healthy
    Cannot communicate with CRS
    Cannot communicate with EVM
    $>ps -fea | grep ocssd.bin | grep -vi grep
    oracle 407 1 0 Aug 13 ? 3:50 /oracle2/V10g2/bin/ocssd.bin

  • Installation of oracle 10gR2 on Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS

    can we install oracle 10gR2 on Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS ???
    While doing sqlplus from command prompt,
    it's giving error like
    'SP2-1503 Unable to initialise Oracle Call interface'
    'SP2-0152 Oracle may not be functioning Properly'
    How to troubleshoot the above errors,
    Has anybody tried it ???
    Plz assist.

    No Oracle product is certified against any Windows Home OS.
    As Vista was released after Oracle 10gR2, 10gR2 is not certified against any edition of Vista.
    You need to downgrade to XP, or install Linux.

  • Install Oracle DB 32-bit on Windows 2003 Server EM64T

    I need to know if i can install Oracle 10.1.0.3 32 bit or 10gR2 32 bit on Windows
    Standard Edition 2003 64 with Intel Xeon -64 bit?
    Tks,

    You must use the 64 bit edition. Only 10gR2 64bit is certified for this platform, 10gR1 was not produced for 64 bits and the 32bit edition is not supported.
    From the Certify Matrix it states "Running 32-bit applications on a 64-bit operating system is generally referred to as "Compatibility-Mode" by many AMD64/EM64T hardware vendors. Irrespective of this terminology, 32-bit Oracle Database server is *not* certified on Windows x64. For the 32-bit Oracle database client, check the certification matrix for more details.".

    Hello,
    Someone has given me an oracle 10g 32 bits to install on a Redhat 5.8 64 bits server (no other server available).

    Tim does a very nice job with his stuff on oracle-base, but that is NOT the official documentation. Why not use ORACLE'S own installation guide? Have you seen http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15667/toc.htm
    And why are you installing a a version of Oracle that is out of support?
    And as long as you have a 64-bit OS, why would you want to run a 32-bit version of Oracle?

  • SQL Server 2005 (64 bit) returns truncated text from Oracle 10g (64 bit)

    Hi all,
    I'm no expert in Oracle so I desperately need your advice.
    I'm using SQL Server 2005 (64 bit) and trying to pull data from a Oracle 10g (64 bit) server. I am able to connect to the Oracle server with no problems.
    The problem came when I was trying to pull a text column (I think it's BLOB in Oracle) from the Oracle server. The results came back BUT truncated to only 100 characters. (This is a column containing event logs so the text is really really long...)
    As you may already know, Microsoft is not providing the driver for this case (which is insanely ridiculous!!!). There is no standard “Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle” which we would normally use to establish a linked server connection to Oracle. Instead, we had to install the provider given by Oracle (Oracle Provider for OLE DB).
    I have tried to Google for solutions but didn't find much. Please help! :(
    Thanks in advance,
    Eleni

    If this is a one time activity, you need to find a migration utility which will do the job for you. SQL Developer is available had your case been the other way round (migrate from SQL Server to Oracle).
    Check out tools from SwisSQL
    http://www.swissql.com/products/oracle-to-sqlserver/oracle-to-sql-server.html
    Microsoft's own SSMA (I think this is what you are using already)
    http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/migration-oracle.aspx
    Apart from this, if there are any issues with the tools themselves, you need to get in touch with the respective vendors.

  • Migration from Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 Server

    I am working on migrating Oracle 9i 32 bit to Oracle 10G 64 bit on Windows 2003 from Old server to new server. We have db around 500 GB and 3 schemas. I installed Oracle 10G on new server, created tablespaces, schema's blah blah and now doing export and import at schema level from old server to new server.
    Import is taking more than 4 to 5 hours on new server. My manager is saying, window time is bit longer and he wants me to try possiblities to make this process faster. Can some one help me on this, to use the best possible method to complete this process faster?
    Will below step work, if I try?
    If I install, oracle 9i and 10g both on new server in different home directories and take the hot backup from old machine and restore on new machine in 9i home directory and use the upgrade configuration assistant from 10g and do the upgrade? Pls advice.

    It looks good.
    I have one question in below steps:
    To migrate an Oracle9i or older database to an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) database for 64-bit Windows:
    1 Perform steps 1 - 11 in "Migrating an Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) Database".
    2 Shut down the database on the 64-bit computer:
    SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
    3 Start the database migration:
    SQL> STARTUP MIGRATE;
    4 Migrate the database as described in Chapter 3, "Upgrading a Database to the New Oracle Database 10g Release" in Oracle Database Upgrade Guide.
    In step 4, it says, migrate database as described in chapter 3. In chapter 3, it says, to do the upgrade the process using dbca or manually. Pls confirm whether do the upgrade process after issuing startup migrate or not.
    Thanks in advance.
