ORACLE 11g AMM

Hellow, my questions concern ORACLE 11g,
First topic
Tell me if i'm right:
if i set server parameters:
memory_max_target to 1.5 GB
memory_target to 1GB
pga_aggregate_target to 100MB
sga_target to 500MB
Q1.That's mean DB will use at least 500MB for all SGA components and at least 100MB for Server Processes?
Q2.And if it's true Oracle will tune SGA szie above sga_target and for PGA above 100MB if necessary?
Second topic:
If I set :
memory_max_target to 1.5 GB
memory_target to 1GB
pga_aggregate_target to 0
sga_target to 0
Q3.That's mean DB wil tune SGA component's size and PGA buffer it self up to 1GB for both elements?
Thanks for replay.

Automatic Memory Management
Starting with Oracle Database 11g, the Automatic Memory Management feature requires more shared memory (/dev/shm) and file descriptors. The shared memory should be sized to be at least the greater of MEMORY_MAX_TARGET and MEMORY_TARGET for each Oracle instance on the computer. To determine the amount of shared memory available, enter the following command: # df -k /dev/shm/
Note: MEMORY_MAX_TARGET and MEMORY_TARGET cannot be used when LOCK_SGA is enabled or with huge pages on Linux

  • Oracle 11g AMM (Automatic Memory Management)

    Hi All,
    I have a very powerful server 24 Processors with 6 cores each and 74 GB RAM for my production database. The server will host only one production database. I wanted to use AMM for this database and allocate maximum memory to Oracle by setting memory_target. By default /dev/shm is set 37 GB but I wanted to increase it least 55 GB. I know I can get this changed by my system admin but I wanted to know how much memory should leave for OS?
    Please help me on sizing this.
    Thanks,
    Arun Singh

  • 11g AMM Affection to DB Performance

    Hi All,
    We had just migrated from Oracle 10g to 11g without changing the Oracle 11g default settings.
    OLD 10g Settings:
    PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET: 32MB
    WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY: AUTO
    SORT_AREA_SIZE: 65536
    HASH_AREA_SIZE: 131072
    New Oracle 11g setting.
    sql> show parameter memory
    NAME | TYPE |VALUE
    hi_shared_memory_address | integer | 0
    memory_max_target | big integer |3280M
    memory_target | big integer |3280M
    shared_memory_address | integer |0
    PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET: 0
    WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY: AUTO
    SORT_AREA_SIZE: 65536
    HASH_AREA_SIZE: 131072
    I understand that because memory_target and memory_max_target are set, so the AMM in 11g is enabled. Therefore PAT is 0 and WASP is set to AUTO.
    Our Problem is that every Thursday/ Friday morning, the database is working on memory_intensive operations: create index, analyze, select distinct, group by, order by, union, intersect, minus and sort-merge joins. We had problem of ORA-01652. Unable to extend temp tablespace by 128 in tablespace TEMP.
    In old DB with 10g, this wasn't a problem.
    My question is how this new setting affected the DB performance? How to adjust the settings?
    Thank you!

    Thanks!
    So again why do you think this problem is related to PGA & other memory configuration?
    I suggest you increase the size of TEMP tablespace.SELECT * FROM dba_temp_files WHERE TABLESPACE_NAME='TEMP'
    1 /DATAFILES/signet/temp01.dbf 1 TEMP 17179869184 2097152 AVAILABLE 1 YES 17179869184 2097152 131072 17178820608 2097024
    2 /DATAFILES/signet/temp02.dbf 2 TEMP 17179869184 2097152 AVAILABLE 2 YES 17179869184 2097152 131072 17178820608 2097024
    17179869184 bytes each for temp files.
    SELECT property_value
    FROM database_properties
    WHERE property_name = 'DEFAULT_TEMP_TABLESPACE'
    TEMP
    I don't think the TEMP tablespace is not big enough. Because we just upgrated to 11g. I guess this issue is because of the difference of memory setttings.
    Can also see another thread in this forum:
    ORA-01652 Unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace TEMP
    Thanks!

  • /dev/shm on Oracle Linux 6.x to run Oracle 11g R2 - manual configuration?

    Hello
    We are building a server to run Oracle 11g R2 database (11.2.0.3 x64) on Oracle Linux 6.2 with UEK R2.
    Our preference is to use AMM to have Oracle 11g R2 manage memory. We may impose some minium SGA and PGA memory allocations but basically aim to use MEMORY_TARGET to manage overall memory.
    By default Linux makes the size of /dev/shm ~50% of server physical RAM, as far as I can tell.
    Here is the /etc/fstab entry created by the installation:
    tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    Given this Linux server will only run Oracle 11g R2 database and some monitoring software, almost application code will run on the server. The application code will run on the separate application server and is Java based.
    Can I change the */etc/fstab* entry for /dev/shm to manually increase the size to take up ~80-90% of the server physical RAM ? Is it a good idea?
    The server is 64-bit, the RAM = 64 GB, so I am thinking to manually make /dev/shm to be = ~55GB, leaving ~8GB for other purposes.
    Right now it's about 32GB (50%?) if I leave the /dev/shm 'defaults' on.
    many thanks

    thanks,
    I have read the doc (what little there is on this topic).
    I have asked on the database forum......
    just FYI - below is the proof:
    SQL> show parameter mem
    NAME                    TYPE     VALUE
    hi_shared_memory_address     integer     0
    memory_max_target          big integer 4G
    memory_target          big integer 0
    shared_memory_address     integer     0
    SQL> show parameter ga
    NAME                    TYPE     VALUE
    lock_sga               boolean     FALSE
    pga_aggregate_target          big integer 1600M
    pre_page_sga          boolean     FALSE
    sga_max_size          big integer 3G
    sga_target               big integer 1600M
    still does not work.
    And I cant change memory_max_target = 0 because I get error on startup:
    SQL> alter system set memory_max_target=0 scope=spfile;
    System altered.
    SQL> shutdown immediate;
    Database closed.
    Database dismounted.
    ORACLE instance shut down.
    SQL> startup;
    ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
    ORA-00843: Parameter not taking MEMORY_MAX_TARGET into account
    ORA-00849: SGA_TARGET 3221225472 cannot be set to more than MEMORY_MAX_TARGET 0.
    BUT if memory_max_target is > 0 then alert log says hugepages can not be used
    it feels like catch-22.....
    thanks

  • 11g AMM - Diagnostic+Tuning Packs required?

    Am I required to purchase a license for the Diagnostic+Tuning packs in order to utilize Automatic Memory Management (AMM) in Oracle 11g?  I haven't been able to find any documentation online stating so.

    Oracle uses some features internally that you would have to pay for if you used them (even just accessing the tables).  But as long as you don't access them yourself, you are fine.  You can check the view DBA_FEATURE_USAGE_STATISTICS and the access is controlled by Options and Packs CONTROL_MANAGEMENT_PACK_ACCESS
    If you have access to MOS, this is explained in AWR Reporting - Licensing Requirements Clarification (Doc ID 1490798.1)
    Edit:  Oracle Database Comparisons | Oracle Database | Oracle search for "Automatic Memory" and it shows it is available for all editions, even though you can only even buy diagnostics on Enterprise.
    Edit2:  Of course, some things you can use: https://blogs.oracle.com/optimizer/entry/does_the_use_of_sql

  • Error while creating a JDBC connection to Oracle 11g using WLS 6.1

    Hi
    I am trying to connect to Oracle 11g database on Weblogic 6.1 server.
    First of all i would like to know if this is compatible?
    The environement that i have is this
    1. JDK 1.3
    2. Database 11g is on remote system
    3. Oracle client on my local system ( Connecting to the 11g DB through the client works fine)
    4. Weblogic server 6.1
    5. Currently the application is connected to Oracle 10g DB and working fine(We are attempting to move it to 11g)
    Below are the steps that i followed to create the connection:
    1. Made an entry for the datasource in config.xml under <WLS_DOMAIN>/config folder as below
    <JDBCConnectionPool DriverName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
    MaxCapacity="4" Name="CADConnectionPool"
    Properties="user=abc_proxy;password=proxy_abc;dll=ocijdbc8;protocol=thin"
    RefreshMinutes="5" ShrinkPeriodMinutes="10" Targets="CAsvr"
    TestConnectionsOnRelease="true" TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
    TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:oracle:thin:@gen11t-ora.db.lab.xyz.com:1530:GEN11T"/>
    2. Restarted the server.
    3. Ran the application and get the following error on the server console:
    <Aug 22, 2011 12:39:42 AM CDT> <Error> <JDBC> <Cannot startup connection pool "C

    The driver being used by your weblogic is too old and incompatible with the DBMS. Upgrade the driver.

    I've googled and seen reference to Oracle spatial using temp tables and not compatible with transactions... but not sure
    exactly how to solve this problem.

    I copied all the installation tree to /tmp/oracle and ran chmod -R 777 * to make sure I could see all the files.
    I've been logging onto the server as the oracle user.
    I've also got Java v1.5.0.6 installed
    I've run out of ideas - anyone able to assist ?

    I've sorted it. Was originally copy unzipped install files from DVD into /tmp but think there must have been some corruption. I now copied and unzipped the install file onto the RH machine and it's now working.

  • Installing Oracle 11g R2 on RHEL 5.9 server

    Hi,
        I've been trying to install Oracle 11g R2 on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 server but have not succeeded thus far. The server meets all the software and hardware requirements for Oracle 11g Release 2 and when it also has all the prerequisite packages/ RPM's on it, when checked manually. I have set up the various kernel, semaphore and local port range parameters in accordance with the Oracle guides for installing Oracle on RHEL 5. I also followed the online guides to create the "oracle" user and set up the groups (oinstall, dba, oper and asm).
        However, when I run the installer, it shows "Failed" for all the prerequisite checks. I tried to ignore this and install Oracle but it failed at 37% and gave multiple errors, related to invoking target 'XYZ' of different files including makefile and gcc.
         I suspect that either the installer is unable to detect these packages as they already exist on our server or it is something to do around permissions to the groups. I read on these forums that it might be because of a "cvu" folder created inside /tmp that requires '777' permission but am not sure if that's what's causing our installation to fail.
         Please let me know how to proceed with the installation and guide me through this.
    Thanks.

    Hi, its Oracle 11g R2 -  2.0.3.6 .
    The O.S is Linux x86_64
    server: RHEL 5.9 (Takinga) with kernel: 2.6.18
    I've been working on this all day today and have managed to overcome the errors regarding the missing/ failed packages. I've also verified that my kernel parameters are correct; I had missed the kernel shmmni parameter yesterday.
    The installer now detects all the packages & runs till 86% when it gives the error: "error invoking target client_sharedlib of makefile".
    Kindly let me know how to proceed. Thanks in advance !
