Oracle 11g Database 64-bit, Client 32-bit

Hi,
I have a problem,
I have an IBM Sever with 64-bit processors.
On it there is a Windows Server 2008 also 64-bit. I've installed Oracle Client 11g 64-bit. And there is my problem.
I can't connect to this database using tools like SQLTools or BDE Administrator. I can only connect via SQL PLUS (which is installed with Oracle). Also with installed Client 11g 32-bit on Windows XP 32-bit(connected via LAN) I can't connect.
While trying to open SQLTools there is a problem with some .dll (I can't remember now what's this .dll, definitely not OCI.dll).
Reinstalling programs doesn't help.
Another problem I have is with HP ProLiant Server. It's also 64-bit installation.
Also Win Server 2008 and Oracle 11g 64-bit. On it is the same problem, but the information while starting SQLTools is a problem with OCI.dll . Also reinstalling is not helping.
Do you guys have any idea, what's wrong??
Cheers...

Just to try to determine if it is a bit-level issue (which it shouldn't be--this has never been a problem for me in the past), try installing 32-bit Oracle client on a workstation and seeing if you can connect.
I agree with the above poster, who said these tools might not be compatible with Oracle 11--they might be looking at different data dictionary views or something similar.

    Service Pack 1
Greetings to all my Oracle Seniors. I have been attempting in vain to install the Oracle 11g database software package fully. I was able to complete the initial installation and made it to the second recommended action which was the Database Configuration Assistant operation. After 3 attempts, the progress bar stalled at 45%. I tried to look at the log file cfgtoologs (cloneDBCreation, and CloneRmanRestore), but it said that I didn't have permission. My pre-check cleared OK on everything. So, please direct me as to how to correct this issue.
    Thanks

Well, that is not much of an option right now. I discovered that I have to reinstall the XP Pro OS after attempting the 11g installation 4 times and the install always stalled at 69% during the initial installation. I did have Windows Service Pack 3 installed on the system. I down graded and added 1 G of additional memory and checked the pre-check with no problem. But, the install continued to stall at 69%. So, and, yet, here we are.
Now in regards to the metalink notes, I am new to the forum, so I don't know my way around quite yet. Isn't the metalink the paid suppport option? If so, I don't have that access.

  • Establish 32-bit ODBC connection to 64-bit Oracle 11g database

    Hi Everyone,
    Just to set the scene:
PC with Windows 2003 server x64 OS installed, Oracle 11g 11.1.0.7 64-bit installed and MS Office 2007 installed.
I am looking for advice on the best way to establish an ODBC link so that MS Access 2007 (32-bit) can connect to the Oracle 11g (64-bit) database.
There are known issues, see [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942976|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942976] (which I have hit) when attempting to use a 64-bit ODBC DSN within MS Access 2007. This means that I need to setup and install an Oracle 11g 32-bit ODBC driver to be used against the Oracle 11g database (TNS listener also running 64-bit).
Any thoughts on the best approach I should take to do this?
    Regards,
    Leigh.

The more information section of the MS support article doesn't give me much to go on other than to explain the differences in how user and system DSNs are displayed and managed between the 2 different bit versions of ODBC administrator and how this information is stored in the different registries (64-bit and WOW64).
I have been able to install 32-bit Oracle11g instantclient and its ODBC driver successfully and then in turn create the 32-bit ODBC DSN, however I am unable to connect to the 64-bit database when I attempt to test the DSN. I have updated the Windows PATH environment variable to include both the path of the Oracle11g DB server and instantclient homes as well as creating a TNS_ADMIN environment variable to point to the location of the Oracle11g TNSNAMES.ORA and the 64-bit 11g listener. However despite this I still get the error when testing the DSN:
    Unable to connect
    SQLState=S1000
    [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12541: TNS:no listener

I suggested Linux in '04 I came from an IBM z/os background and did not want Windows. Oh well. What "Oh well"?? I was commending you for moving away from Winows. ;-)
I started my career on IBM system 360 and was on its descendant up to z/os before moving to the DBA role in a client server enviornment. With that I worked with Windows, OS/2, OpenVMS, and several flavors of nix.  I always* recommend against Windows for anything besides end-user desktop ... and that only because of Windows's pervasiveness in that arena.

Is it really that easy to just install Oracle 11g R1 (64-bit) and take a 9.2.0.7 dmp (Windows) and import it in?
I do not have anything else to do? What about data type differences etc......I have some Blobs and Clobs in this database.I've never had the opportunity to work with clobs and blobs, but I do understand there are some issues there with exp and imp. I understand there are methods for dealing with it, but it does add a bit more complexity. Aside from that, it really is that easy. When using exp/imp to move data between different versions of oracle, always exp with the utility from the lower version and imp with that of the version being imported into.

Telling us that you are using 11.1 helps. But it is far from a complete description of the environment. What edition of the database are you using? What options are installed? What Enterprise Manager packs are licensed? Is any of this changable? Could you license another option for the database or another pack for Enterprise Manager if that was necessary?
What does it mean to you to "mask data"? Do you want to store the data on disk and then mask the data in the presentation layer when certain people query it (i.e. store the patient's social security number in the database but only present ***-**- and the last 4 digits to certain sets of employees)? Do you want to hide entire fields from certain people? Do you want to change the data stored in the database when you are refreshing a lower environment with production data? If so, do you need and/or want this process to be either determinisitic or reversable or both?

  • Oracle 11g database can we update patch directly from 11.2.0.3.0 to 11.2.0.4.0?

    Hi,

    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.3.0 - Production

TNS for 64-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
I want to update the patch.
Oracle 11g database can we update patch directly from 11.2.0.3.0 to 11.2.0.4.0?
Is any impact on the database?
    Kindly suggest,
    Regards,
    Sachin

11.2.0.4 is nothing but a patchset of 11.2.0.3, in-place upgrade is allowed :
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/preup.htm#UPGRD12370
"You cannot install the new software into the same location for Oracle home as your current release, unless you are installing an Oracle Database 11g patchset release. For a patchset release, you can use the same Oracle Database 11g Oracle home."
And since it's a patchset, a direct upgrade is ok.
Lastly, yes, every upgrade has an impact (e.g. perf.), it has to be tested.
    Nicolas.

  • Failover not working while connecting to Oracle 11g database

    Hi,
We have a J2EE application that connects to Oracle 11g database.
The connection URL we are using is as below
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION =(SDU=32768)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=abc.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST= xyz.hostname.com)(PORT=1525))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=PQR)))
The issue that we are facing is, the database failover is not working. The application only connects to the first host in the TNS entry.Evertime there is a failure in the connection to the first host, manual steps are required to swap the hosts.
This started happening after we upgraded Oracle DB from 9i to 11g.
We are using the client jar of 9i to connect to 11g. Could this be causing the problem?
    Thanks In Advance.

Yes, you are right. Nothing else was updated.
The application still works as expected except the failover. If you are correct then I seriously doubt it has anything to do with java. It would be something to do with Oracle and/or network infrastructure.
If not then it is some small problem with the driver. You can try updating the driver but I wouldn't expect a fix.

So the quest is converting Oracle Database to MySQL database.
I predict that converting to MySQL will cost your company more as it expands. As you expand managing contention becomes more important - Oracle does this for you. I do not think MySQL does, so you'll have to write more code to deal with this, costing the company money. A big part of making application scalable and reliable is to use stored procedures, how good are MySQL's compared to PL/SQL's. What other features are there that MySQL has that will benefit your company that Oracle doesn't. What do you need to think about as your company expands that need to be taken care of in the database. I would have thought a migration from MySQL to Oracle would be more common to deal with expansion.
As you know "NOTHING" you need to think about what each database can give you for the next 10 years to cope with you businesses potential requirements, and extimate how much it will cost to implement these requirements, then make the decision

Thanks for your reply. I have found out that an explain plan is possible on the user's own objects and is not possible on the granted objects from a different schema. For eg, if I do a explain plan on a view querying on tables from a different view, it would not allow the explain plan to proceed. This could mean that explain plan needs different privileges than just a select.
