Oracle 11g in Virtual Machine
Hi Gurus,
I would like to gather input from you, what is the pro and con, advantages and disadvantages for putting Oracle 11g in Virtual Machine (VMWare, Oracle VM, Virtual Box, etc.)
and will there be any licensing issue with this.
Currently we have CPU Based license for our Production and Named User license for the Dev.
thanks in advance for your time.
Lie
If you put Oracle db in VMWare then you have a non-certified configuration, and you could be alone (I mean without Oracle support) if you have a problem than Oracle support cannot reproduce in a certified configuration. I would avoid a non-certified configuration for a production environment.
So, two choices :
* go for Oracle VM
* go without VM at all
Nicolas.

Hi,
I have installed Oracle r12 on virtual machine (linux) on my laptop.
I have noticed that virtual machine loses date/time.
How can I keep the date/time on my virtual machine in sync with my laptop date/time so that date and time in Oracle R12 is current?

Oracle database on virtual machine without a license
Hi,
Someone told me earlier that you can install Oracle on a virtual machine without buying a license. Do you know an internet link that could confirm this.
Thanks. What about preconfigured virtual machines Oracle distributes? Do you have to have a license for them as well? I'm pretty sure you do, it would say in big letters if you didn't need a license...
I not can you alter the installations by building additional instances?Yes, you can add instances (except to an XE database) for testing but you asked about licensing a server...

Oracle VM as virtual machine - Networking
hi
I have seen some docs about networking, and thus how to install oracle vm 3.2.x as virtual guest on top of the cloud stack (HA enabled).
Is there any best practices document for networking in this fashion?
We like to have 3 networks.
Network management VLAN1 (local IP adresses)
Storage Network VLAN2 (local IP adresses)
VM Network VLAN3 (public IP's)
While the oracle vm runs as a guest, there is only the public network wehere we can select for nic's.
It's possible to run OVM as guest with diffrent network segment? Should we use this configuration in a production ervironment
Thanks for your supportI was making this too complicated... I set up a squid proxy on a different machine and it all works well.

No ocijdbc12 in java.library.path -- Oracle 11g client on machine - 4.1 EA
no ocijdbc12 in java.library.path when trying to open a connection SQL Developer 4.1 EA version
My 32-bit machine has an 11g cllient.
Connections should work with 11g client as well.
Not planning on 12c client until we start migrating to new releases/If you do not have Tools > Preferences > Database > Advanced > Use OCI/Thick driver checked, that message will not appear whether the client is 11g or 12c. If you want to use OCI/Thick in conjunction with 11g, then make sure Advanced > Use Oracle Client is checked and points to your installed 11g client. Run the Test... button in the Configure panel and make sure any other requirements are also met.

Oracle tuxedo and Oracle tuxedo message queue on top of a virtual machine.
Hi buddies.
how is it going?
A quick question.
So we are going to go live using Oracle Tuxedo 12.1.1.0 with Distinguished Bulletin Board Liaison and Oracle Tuxedo Message Queue 12.1.1.0 on top of a Virtual Machine (VMWARE) running Oracle Linux 6.2. However we want to know if there are any recommendations or mishaps in which we may face ahead by running Oracle Tuxedo on a virtual machine?
I mean, I am wondering if I have to worry about kernel parameters, virtual machine parameters or any other thing from which could mess up everything.
Another question.
Does oracle also provide virtual machines certification where Oracle tuxedo would run on top of ?
Todd Little-Oracle
Maurice GHi Bruno,
I'm not sure what you mean with Distinguished Bulletin Board Liaison. I'm guessing you mean a clustered or MP configuration? And is it truly a clustered configuration or just a single machine MP configuration?
Regarding configuration, are you using Tuxedo services as well or just Tuxedo Message Queue? The biggest issue related to OS configuration is around IPC resources. If you do a tmloadcf -c on your UBBCONFIG file, it will help you determine the minimum IPC resources required. In general I suggest configuring significantly more resources than the minimum to allow for future changes and for some of the parameters for heavier loads. In particular IPC message queue parameters are heavily dependent upon load. So make sure the maximum message size and queue size are large enough for your anticipated workload. You can monitor them under load using the ipcs command.
We don't certify virtual machine environment but support them as long as the VM vendor assures compatibility, which obviously VMware and Oracle VM both do.

Todd Little

Hi Just a quick one...
Would it be possible to install 11gr2 with ASM on a virtual machine (running OEL 5.5) - host machine running windows?
Or can anyone think of any issues I might have?
Thanks806595 wrote:
this?... as in im strugeling to find any guides for running oracle on a virtual machine with windows hostThe reason you are struggling to find any such guides is because there is no reason for them to exist. Oracle only cares about what OS it is running on. If you have a windows host with a virtual Linux, and Oracle is installed on that virtual linux, then Oracle only cares about the linux. It doesn't even know about the Windows, so why should there be any guides dealing with that? Running oracle on a virtual machine is just like running it on a physical machine. That's the whole idea of virtualization.

whats the difference between oracle virtualbox/vmware/vmplayer ...?Different products, different companies
Virtualbox - "An x86 virtualization software package developed by Sun Microsystems" (That quote came from the summary in the very first hit when I googled "virtualbox". I didn't even have to drill down to find it.) (Sun is now owned by Oracle)
VMware - a company that produces a variety of VM products. The leading vendor of such products
VMplayer - one of the products produced by VMware. A free, no-frills product for creating virtual machines under a host OS.

Connecting one database to many virtual machines
Hi Experts,
We have set many Virtual Machines (VM) in Windows Server already. Each Virtual Machine will be used to install SAP module for instance VM-1 for BI, VM-2 for Solution Manager, VM-3 for IDES, VM-4 for EP, etc.
The questions is:
Is it possible to integrate one Data Base (Oracle) to all virtual machine? and how to do it ?
Thank you for the respond.
Gruesse,
F. RamliIt is called "MCOD" - http://service.sap.com/mcod
Personally I wouldn´t use such a scenario. In case you want to upgrade/patch the database all instances will be down.

Where can i find oracle 11g csi number
Hi oracle Lord’s
This is Arun, I’m facing some problem while I installing oracle 11g on my machine. I downloaded oracle 11g from the below link
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html.
While I installing oracle 11g it will ask CSI Number, from where can I get the CSI number.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Arun M MYou need to buy from your local oracle partner. This is the customer service identification number which need to log in to metalink support. But you don't need CSI to install oracle database. Avoid to check the latest patch version which need the CSI for connecting metalink.
In this paper we will install the 11.2.0.1 release of Oracle Database 11g. This is the base distribution of Oracle Database 11g release 2. Be sure to check Oracle Support’s Metalink at http://metalink.oracle.com to see if a newer patch set has been released since this paper was published. You will need a valid Customer Service Identifier (CSI) number in order to access the Metalink website.
Source : http://www.dbspecialists.com/oracle11glinux.html
Also,
2.4 Preinstallation Requirements for Oracle Configuration Manager
During installation, you are prompted to provide information required to enable Oracle Configuration Manager. In the event that you need to place a service request with Oracle Support, the configuration information can help to provide a more rapid resolution to the service issue.
You can enable Oracle Configuration Manager during or after installation, or choose not to enable it. To enable it during installation, you must have the following information available:
Customer Support Identification Number (CSI) that identifies your organization
OracleMetalink user account name
Country code associated with your service agreement
So, don't install OCM during the installation.

How to deploy oracle 11g under cold failover cluster
Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 11g under failover cluster environments. I am trying to find some oracle documentation about it. But not able to find one. Can anyone help me. Please i need it badly.
we have two servers sun solaris 10. on which we have failover cluster being installed. one is active while one is passive. How can i install oracle 11g on this failover clusters. did i have to install oracle of shared SAN. what are the extra configuration i have to do please help
Also is it wise to install 11g warehouse with fail safe or use RAC.
regards
Nick
Edited by: Nick Naughty on Feb 1, 2009 4:02 AMthanks alot for reply.
I am of the same point of view. but the machine i am working on is sun solaris 10 with two partitions finance and accounts which have been protected by a failed over machine having two partitions finance and accounts and i think you are right these are the same shared storage folder which are mounted on active machine as well as on passive machine.
Now my question is if i install oracle 11g on one machine without oracle cluster then sun cluster should be able to mount the database in case the primary machine fails.
I have tried hard to get some documentation on this top but nothing so far. please help

Oracle 11g RAC on Windows 2008 R2 VMware EXS 3.5 virtual machines
Hi,
We are planning to Install Oracle 11g R2 RAC on two VMware EXS 3.5 Windows 2008 R2 servers.
Having trouble while assigning the storage to the servers, the Raw Device Mapping feature in the VMware is greyed out and we cannot assign the disks to the Virtual servers, the disks are allocated to the Vmware Host machine from the SAN (HP EVA).
Please guide me the best approach for the RAC configuration on VMware EXS 3.5 Win 2008 R2 Guest servers.
any help will be highly appreceiated.
Thanks.Hi,
Is this implementation to production environment?
Be aware:
Is Oracle RAC on VMware supported? No, we do not support Oracle Software including Oracle RAC on VMWare.
Aside from the support restrictions for the database on VMWare outlined in Metalink Note 249212.1, there are technical restrictions that prevent the certification of Oracle RAC in a VMWare environment.

Thank you for the information. The link you have mentioned is about migration the environment of a machine to a VM. But i'm looking for migrating an Oracle Database 11g from a Physical Machine (Linux x86) to a Virtual Machine( Linux x86) created using Oracle VM. Can you help me out in this.
Thanks :)As far as I understand it this is not really VM related.
You have an existing linux machine .... uname -a ... with a partiocular OS and kernel and set of packages installed ....
And a guest VM running linux ... uname -a .... with hopefully the same/similar OS and set of packages installed, similar users, directory layout etc.
And you wish to get the Oracle (Classic RDBMS) home software cloned/migrated and an oracle database cloned/migrated.
There's a number of different senarios here ... can i help you out .... (the answer is I could but i dont have time).
The start point is good planning and careful notes if you are attempting to change any versions / layours etc.
You might have stages like (this is a top of head fagpacket and perhaps not best terminology):
- Install basic Linux software on VM guest.
- Install additional linux packages
- create groups, users, directories, system parameters etc.
- Create or clone oracle home.
- clone oracle database by eg RMAN or otherwise.
Different forums may help different stages if necessary. -
A few question regarding oracle Vm (and virtualizing Db 11g)
Hi,
I've just started evaluating Oracle vm for our next deployment.
One of the systems I'll need to virtualize is Oracle db 11g. As far as I understand the oracle DB template only comes with ASM? I would prefer to use LVM. What is the best way to install db into virtual machine without asm? Should I start with EL 5.2 and configure it, or could I somehow use the EL that comes with the template?
Regarding LVM: I'm planning to create different volume groups, each with just one logical volume. These volumes would be mounted to guest as /u01, /u02 ... and so on. All volumes will be created on mirrored disks/partitions. Later, I could just move, expand, strip volumes as db usage will require. Does that sound ok?
And another question regardin oracle vm: in the manual, chapter 4.6.2 says: "Install an operating system. This may be done a number of ways.
■ Install an Oracle VM Server-enabled operating system from CD-ROMs...."
Is there a list of server-enabled operating systems anywhere? And maybe more detailed explanation of this step?
Thanks

The Database template is designed to automatically configure and provision the database with ASM and would probably take longer to dismantle.

All volumes will be created on mirrored disks/partitions. Later, I could just move, expand, strip volumes as db usage will require. Does that sound ok?It sounds OK, but ASM does all of that and more. It is also faster (particularly on Oracle VM, as it uses direct access to the disks). ASM also does automatic data levelling and striping. With 11g, I would strongly recommand ASM over LVM for your storage.
Is there a list of server-enabled operating systems anywhere? And maybe more detailed explanation of this step? There isn't a list -- that's possibly badly worded as well. If you don't want to use one of the paravirtualized Oracle Enterprise Linux templates available on eDelivery, you can use any operating system installation CD in ISO format. Note that installations from an ISO are done as fully virtualized guests (i.e. hardware virtualized) and require Intel VT-x or AMD-s extensions to be present and enabled. Hardware virtualized guests are also not as fast as paravirtualized Linux guests.
Oracle only certifies Database 11g running on Enterprise Linux in paravirtualized mode. The simplest way to deploy this is to use the provided templates.
