Oracle 11g on rhel5

hi oracle community,
i've installed the new oracle 11g on rhel5 enterprise linux. i put all necessary packages in place and set all needed kernel parameters as documented.
the installation worked fine, and the OUI created a starter database for me.
listener is configured and started. so everything is pretty good working and
i started to play around with it. to get sqlplus working i had to turn off SELinux
completely.
now the problem: after a few hours of running smoothly, the box is no longer responsive. it seems the whole OS is going to freeze. all my ssh shells did no longer respond. SQL-queries did not respond any longer.
the only thing i can do then is to hard reset the box and reboot. there is nothing of interest in /var/log/messages afterwards. btw. oracle db recovers with no errors from this outage and comes back immediatly. :-)
one more thing to mention: if i reboot into rhel5 without starting oracle 11g database the box runs for days without having the problem.
anyone with an idea about this behaviour? many thanks in advance.
manisan

I am REALLY surprised that Oracle Linux installation does not have at least an option for each of the Oracle RDBMS major versions. It should be as easy as download Oracle Linux distribution, select install "Linux for Oracle 11g" and "Linux for Oracle 10g". The installation completes, then install the Oracle RDBMS and OEM software, no fuss, no muss.

    Dear bezgodo!
    Please execute the following commands and compare the results.
    1.
    hostname --fqdn2.
    nslookup <your_ip_address>In both cases you should see the fully qualified hostname of your server.

  • Oracle 11g ASM - looking for some answers

    Hello,
    I reviewed a bunch of stuff about Oracle 11g ASM from various sources, but still haven't figured out some answers. Perhaps someone could help me to find the missing links please.
    Q1) ASMLib seems to require partitions. ASM recognizes partitions as well as disk devices. So why not using partitions in general? At least I could use ASMLib later without having to reconfigure the drives and loosing all data. Correct?
    Q2) The ASMLib driver is not installed by default, and unlike other ASM components is not available from the public yum repository for OEL 5.5. After some searching I found it available for download, but why is it not more obvious. Should it not be used anymore? http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linux/downloads/rhel5-084877.html
    Q3) ASM will not see drives or partitions unless the device ownership is set to Oracle. When Enterprise Linux starts, it resets all block devices to the owner of root. The solution is to create a udev rules file: e.g.:
    /etc/udev/rules.d/99-oracle.rules:
    KERNEL=="sda", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="0660"
    KERNEL=="sdb", OWNER="oracle", GROUP="dba", MODE="0660"
    Before using ASMLlib, I need to configure the driver, which will ask me for the default user and group who owns the partitions (/etc/init.d/oracleasm configure)
    I conclude that using ASMLib will therefore not require a udev rules file, correct?
    Q4) The Oracle documentation outlines that ASMLIB is an application programming interface (API) developed by Oracle to simplify the operating system–to-database interface and to exploit the capabilities of vendors' storage arrays on Linux-based systems. What does this mean, examples? Isn't this what ASM does in general, why ASMLIB?
    Q5) I installed ASM and would like to re-configure it. Apparently ASM alone does not provide an interface other than sqlplus. In order use ASM with Enterprise Manager, I need to install a database or EM 11g (?) Grid control. Correct?
    Thanks,
    Markus

    Hi,
    So you got answers for 3 4 and 5
    Q1) ASMLib seems to require partitions. ASM recognizes partitions as well as disk devices. So why not using partitions in general? At least I could use ASMLib later >without having to reconfigure the drives and loosing all data. Correct?Using ASMLib, you can use your understandable disk partitions names rather than creating raw devices and adding entry in /etc/raw file and changing rights on every startup, so it makes life easier. Read post of "wcoekaer" from following thread
    ASMLib and Linux block devices
    Q2) The ASMLib driver is not installed by default, and unlike other ASM components is not available from the public yum repository for OEL 5.5. After some >searching I found it available for download, but why is it not more obvious. Should it not be used anymore? http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linux/downloads/rhel5-084877.html
    I am not sure about OEL 5, but i have seen it in OEL 4 and i can install this package during OEL 4 installation. But i believe you should be able to find this package in one of the Disks of OEL 5

    That is not an Oracle site and thus does not constitute a statement by Oracle regarding ANTYHING. It most certainly does NOT support your assertion that "RHEL 6 is certified by oracle"
    The link is merely someone's hack to install Oracle on an un-certified platform.Please note that the site already mentions that Oracle is not supported on RHEL 6.x. See right at the beginning of the page something like ...
    Important Information
    A production usage is offically not yet recommended since no Oracle RDBMS products have at the date of 17th October 2011 been certified on RHEL 6.x.
    Furthermore there are hundreds of installation guides on supported systems. The page itself is therefore not merely a hack. I think we will have to wait until Oracle 12c or similar is released before Oracle is supported on RHEL 6.x. Running in the meantime Oracle on RHEL 6.x is from my point of view and experience fine as long as you do not rely on Oracle support services. Nevertheless for the time being RHEL 5.x is the way to go. With such a setup there won't be discussions like this one. :-)

  • Questions on Oracle 11g installation

    Hello all,
    I would be installing Oracle 11g database (stand alone) on a Linux (RHEL5) shortly...I've done this quite a no of times but this time I have the following requirements..
    1) TNS_ADMIN environment should NOT be the regular $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin...It should be outside of the ORACLE_BASE/ORACLE_HOME, something like /special_tns/network/admin/...Can this be achived by simply setting the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to point to the non default location before installing the software?...I don't think there is an option even in NETCA to specify a non default TNS_ADMIN environment..
    2) ORACLE_ADMIN environment (ie..bdump, cdump,udump etc) should NOT be under $ORACLE_HOME..It should be directly under $ORACLE_BASE..
    Any ideas on how #1 & #2 could be implemented?
    Thanks for your time..

    Hello;
    Sure, install software only and then when you create the database use a parameter file with these changed as needed.
    background_dump_dest
    audit_file_dest
    core_dump_dest
    user_dump_dest
    BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST = { pathname | directory }
    AUDIT_FILE_DEST = 'directory'
    CORE_DUMP_DEST = directory
    USER_DUMP_DEST = { pathname | directory }
    You should be able to set TNS_ADMIN in your OS profile.
    Ex.

    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR

    The second database IOTEST is a small test db.
    This is how i did the test
    i stopped the DWRPD01 wich is the dw database.
    i start the IOTEST DATABSE and run the iops script.
    after the run i stoped IOTEST and started DWPRD02 and run the same script.
    i am sure the database files was on the same san disk group . but ofc i can not besure that the data be on the same physical disk in the SAN cabinett.
    Ill check ur other questions as soon as i have some ansvers

  • Error while creating a JDBC connection to Oracle 11g using WLS 6.1

    Hi
    I am trying to connect to Oracle 11g database on Weblogic 6.1 server.
    First of all i would like to know if this is compatible?
    The environement that i have is this
    1. JDK 1.3
    2. Database 11g is on remote system
    3. Oracle client on my local system ( Connecting to the 11g DB through the client works fine)
    4. Weblogic server 6.1
    5. Currently the application is connected to Oracle 10g DB and working fine(We are attempting to move it to 11g)
    Below are the steps that i followed to create the connection:
    1. Made an entry for the datasource in config.xml under <WLS_DOMAIN>/config folder as below
    <JDBCConnectionPool DriverName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
    MaxCapacity="4" Name="CADConnectionPool"
    Properties="user=abc_proxy;password=proxy_abc;dll=ocijdbc8;protocol=thin"
    RefreshMinutes="5" ShrinkPeriodMinutes="10" Targets="CAsvr"
    TestConnectionsOnRelease="true" TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
    TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:oracle:thin:@gen11t-ora.db.lab.xyz.com:1530:GEN11T"/>
    2. Restarted the server.
    3. Ran the application and get the following error on the server console:
    <Aug 22, 2011 12:39:42 AM CDT> <Error> <JDBC> <Cannot startup connection pool "C

    The driver being used by your weblogic is too old and incompatible with the DBMS. Upgrade the driver.

  • Oracle 11g  Quartz Scheduler 1.8.5 running under JBOSS 5.1

    Basically I'm getting this error when running Quartz configured for the jobStore
    org.quartz.jobStore.class = org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.JobStoreCMT
    I've got two data sources setup.
    One data source is setup to be looked up via JNDI (presumably for the one that may participate in distributed JTA XA transactions) and one that
    supposedly is not to participate in JTA transactions in which quartz can call commit/rollback on it's own.
    The problem I'm seeing with the interaction of the two is the following exception:
    05:21:27,292 ERROR [TxPolicy] javax.ejb.EJBTransactionRolledbackException: SqlMapClient operation; uncategorized SQLException for SQL []; SQL state [9

    Has anyone seen this error before with the following configuration of Quartz 1.8.5, Oracle 11g, Oracle Spatial?
    I've googled and seen reference to Oracle spatial using temp tables and not compatible with transactions... but not sure
    exactly how to solve this problem.
    Thanks in advacce.

    I copied all the installation tree to /tmp/oracle and ran chmod -R 777 * to make sure I could see all the files.
    I've been logging onto the server as the oracle user.
    I've also got Java v1.5.0.6 installed
    I've run out of ideas - anyone able to assist ?

    I've sorted it. Was originally copy unzipped install files from DVD into /tmp but think there must have been some corruption. I now copied and unzipped the install file onto the RH machine and it's now working.
