Is that something we can control through some system/database parameters or is that the way oracle 11g on solaris works? As you have already said, it is "virtual" memory. This is not real, "physical" memory. Solaris has a virtual memory sub-system layer in it, as do almost all other modern operating systems. Google "operating system virtual memory" to find out more on what virtual memory is and how it works.
In terms of your question, virtual memory means that not all of a process's memory space needs to be in physical memory for it to run and execute. The process virtual memory space is broken up into equal sized pages, and only those pages currently being referenced (used) are mapped and read into physical memory pages. Thus the virtual size of a process is irrelevant to how much physical memory is being used. Look at the RSS column (ps -ely) for the physical memory used by each process - Resident Set Size.
Furthermore, an Oracle shadow server process (oracle) uses a large segment of shared memory for the SGA. This shared memory only exists once in physical memory, and is shared amongst all the shadow server processes. But it is mapped into the address space of each process, and so appears and is counted in the virtual and physical memory of each process.
So each reported virtual size (SZ) of each oracle process is also counting the mapped shared memory pages in each process, and so counting the same pages multiple times across all the oracle processes. You need to subtract the size of the SGA shared memory from the virtual size of each oracle process to determine the private, local memory per shadow process.
If you want a further breakdown of the memory map of each process, look at the manual pages for pmap (man pmap), which will break it down by text, private data, zero initialized, shared and other types. By subtracting the shared size from the resident size you can get a true view of the private, local memory per oracle shadow server process.

  • Solaris 10 Sparc and Oracle 11g DB with GG

    Hi,
I have Solaris system with Solaris 10 Sparc and Oracle 11g DB.
From the Golden gate download list I downloaded the Golden Gate for Oracle 11g and Solaris 10.
I tried to Install but I am getting the following error..
    $ ldd ggsci
ldd: ggsci: ELF machine type: EM_AMD64: is incompatible with system
Can you please let us know which might be the best golden gate software for us.

What exact file did you download (what's the file name, before unzipping it), and on your solaris box, what's the result of => "uname -a" and/or "isainfo -v" ...? Just make sure the downloaded file matches what the box is running...
Btw, not that it matters in this case, but if you were hypothetically running a 32-bit database on a 64-bit OS, you'd need a 32-bit build of GoldenGate. But I don't know why you'd do that. (And that's not the problem here.)

  • Oracle 11g - Solaris 10 on cisco UCS server

I would like to know if anyone has experience with installing Oracle databases on cisco UCS servers.  I recently took over a dba shop and my client has purchased a cisco UCS server and is planning on migrating some databases currently on dedicated servers running on Solaris 10 and others running on Linux RH 5.4 platforms.  I need to find out if Oracle 11g and Solaris 10 is compatible and covered by Oracle licenses.  Does anyone have any specs and/or information on this topic?  Thanks in advance.
    Jonathan Begazo-Leon

    Jonathan,
there's a dedicated Oracle database forum (Database) where you can post your issue. In this forum here only 3rd party to Oracle migrations using the Oracle tools migration workbench or SQL Developer will be covered. As I can't move your thread, please close this one here and post your issue again in the database forum.
    Thanks,

I have downloaded Oracle 11G R2 version from Windows and extracted it in Windows and copied it into DVD after extraction in two folders. Now I am mounting that DVD in Solaris 10 installed in my VMware . I made a new directory named as 'installation ' under /export/home/oracle and copied the folders from DVD to 'installation' folder. Now I am entering installation folder and try to do ./runInstaller as 'oracle ' user and getting the error mentioned before.

  • Oracle 11g installation Kernel version  error

    Hi
We are inprocess of installing oracle 11g on solaris 5.10. Our current Solaris 10 is with kernel version (5.10-2008.03.24.13.19). . It requires kernel version (5.10-2008.10). What patch need to be installed for us to achieve this. Please advice.
The following are the operating system requirements for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2):
    * Solaris 10 U6 (5.10-2008.10)
When I check with my OS team they says the currently have kernel patch ID 142909-17, which already Solaris 10 U9.Thus this Domain already fulfill the requirement

You could post to the Installation forum : Database Installation
But you should also log an SR with Oracle Support.

  • Oracle 11g R2 on HP and Solaris

    Hello All,
In the Last Week i was installing Oracle 11R2 on two HP servers and one Solaris server. i faced common issues on the three servers and i posted threads about some of these issues.
But i want to summarize it so i know the solution of each one in order not to face it again.
    Below is the info
I have 3 servers, two of them are HP where Oracle 10g is installed and one Solaris server where i am doing the Oracle installation for the first time.
On the 3 servers and when i was installing Oracle 11g R2 the installation failed at the end when it was trying to create the db with this error: the file Seed_Database.dfb containing the datafiles information is missing.
knowing that i download it Oracle 11g R2 from the Oracle website for the three server. Why this file is always missed ? and even now and after i created a custom database manually (Not during the installation) i can't create a "general purpose db" through dbca because it needs this template file.
while creating the database on the 3 servers and on step 4 of 12 of the tab related to OEM is disabled. and the emctl is not automatically configured after the creation of the db. why this tab is always disabled on step 4 of 12?
    Regards.

I think that the error would be caused by the JDK version with which try to initializing.
Anyone have any idea about the possible error? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I encourage you to try to use the generic installer at: %SOA_INSTALLER_DIR%/Disk1/runInstaller. Because if you are using the runInstaller at %SOA_INSTALLER_DIR%/Disk1/install/solaris it will lead to that problem in some cases.

  • Oracle 11g client installation on Solaris in non GUI mode

    Hi,
I want to know if there is a way i can install Oracle 11g client on Solaris 10 machine in non GUI mode (ie. i want to do it from a command based terminal)
    Thanks
    Anup

    Hi Anup
You have two ways to install it
    1) Client installation without response file
Please Refer to Doc ID 885643.1
    2) With Response file
Refer to the document available in Document library
Document Oracle® Database Client Installation Guide
11g Release 2 (11.2) for Solaris Operating System
Note: from 11gR2 onwards you can create a response file from GUI also and then use it later on for silent installation.
Hope this is helpful for You
    Regards
    Sudhir

Thank you in advance..In general, each product has an installation manual - found through http://docs.oracle.com and possibly http://tahiti.oracle.com and the install manual clearly identifies the (minimum) support OS and Release information.
