I suggested Linux in '04 I came from an IBM z/os background and did not want Windows. Oh well. What "Oh well"?? I was commending you for moving away from Winows. ;-)
I started my career on IBM system 360 and was on its descendant up to z/os before moving to the DBA role in a client server enviornment. With that I worked with Windows, OS/2, OpenVMS, and several flavors of nix.  I always* recommend against Windows for anything besides end-user desktop ... and that only because of Windows's pervasiveness in that arena.

Is it really that easy to just install Oracle 11g R1 (64-bit) and take a 9.2.0.7 dmp (Windows) and import it in?
I do not have anything else to do? What about data type differences etc......I have some Blobs and Clobs in this database.I've never had the opportunity to work with clobs and blobs, but I do understand there are some issues there with exp and imp. I understand there are methods for dealing with it, but it does add a bit more complexity. Aside from that, it really is that easy. When using exp/imp to move data between different versions of oracle, always exp with the utility from the lower version and imp with that of the version being imported into.

  • Install Oracle 11g R2 64-bit on Windows 7 home premium

    Hi Guys
I'm a little pissed off.I've installed Oracle 11g R2 a few times now..on windows xp without any issues but the first time I've tried to install 11g R2 64-bit on my new laptop and it just won't work.
The installation goes just fine until step 4 System class and I chose Desktop class and the installation program just hangs.
    I've done the following steps
1: Installed Java SDK 6 update 31 in the following directory C:\Java\jdk1.6.0_31
2: I've also disabled User account control settings to never notify.
3: I've tried unzipping the two zip files separately and together with the same result.(hung installation)
4: updated java_home and path environment variables with the java sdk directory. (My path does have other values which have a space between directory names..ive tried
removing all those entries and just keeping the java directory entry but it still gave me the same error)
5: I always kick off the installation setup.exe file as an administrator.
    I'ld appreciate some help....

  • Oracle 11g Database 64-bit, Client 32-bit

    Hi,
    I have a problem,
I have an IBM Sever with 64-bit processors.
On it there is a Windows Server 2008 also 64-bit. I've installed Oracle Client 11g 64-bit. And there is my problem.
I can't connect to this database using tools like SQLTools or BDE Administrator. I can only connect via SQL PLUS (which is installed with Oracle). Also with installed Client 11g 32-bit on Windows XP 32-bit(connected via LAN) I can't connect.
While trying to open SQLTools there is a problem with some .dll (I can't remember now what's this .dll, definitely not OCI.dll).
    Reinstalling programs doesn't help.
Another problem I have is with HP ProLiant Server. It's also 64-bit installation.
Also Win Server 2008 and Oracle 11g 64-bit. On it is the same problem, but the information while starting SQLTools is a problem with OCI.dll . Also reinstalling is not helping.
Do you guys have any idea, what's wrong??
    Cheers...

Just to try to determine if it is a bit-level issue (which it shouldn't be--this has never been a problem for me in the past), try installing 32-bit Oracle client on a workstation and seeing if you can connect.
I agree with the above poster, who said these tools might not be compatible with Oracle 11--they might be looking at different data dictionary views or something similar.

  • Steps to Install oracle 11g client 32 Bit,64 Bit in a single server

    Hi,
I have a requirement to Install Both "Oracle Client 11.2.0.2 Win32" and "Oracle Client 11.2.0.2 Win64" on a single server.
Please provide the step by step instruction for the above requirement.
    Environment
    Windows Server 2008 R2 64Bit.
    Thanks
    Sambit

Just use separate base directories e.g.
    c:\32bit\oracle and
    c:\64bit\oracle
Install the 32-bit client first, then the 64-bit client. The order should not matter.

    Zeev

    Hi Stephan,
I wanted to add onto Zeev's precise answer.
First of all we appreciate your feedback, we will look into why the above mentioned links are not updated as expected.
Regretfully our SDN page is a bit outdated and we are in the midst of updating it.
Currently, AccAD 2.2 SP4 as available for download and has already been adopted by some of the main SAP customers and in addition by new customers.
The release notes indicating the differences can be found as part of the installations but I hope to provide the 2.2 SP4 notes later this week - in a formal SDN announcement.
Further more as for additional updates:
    - AccAD 2.3 is currently undergoing validation phase and is expected to enter Ramp Up phase in October of 2011.
    - AccAD 2.3 as with every version brings with it new capabilities and increased performance and quality as well as a more up-to-date PAM.
    - We are currently in the planning phase of the next AccAD version to begin development very soon and would be very happy to hear the feedback that you or any other of our customer base may have.  To do so, I encourage you to contact me directly - as i cannot post an email address here - my details can be found in my business card found in this forum.
    - We will be attending and presenting at SAP TechEd Las Vegas and TechEd Sapphire Madrid - we would be happy to meet up in case you will be present.
    All the Best,

  • Newbie Question: - Which Patch Sets/Interim Patches to install?

We have 6 Oracle 10.2.3.0 Databases (AIX5.3 64bit) including a 10.2.3.0 Grid Db, Now I have stated to investigate the possibility of patching our new Db/Infrastructure using GRID patching wizard (Deployment > Patch Oracle Software) . The question I have it what patches will I install? All of them? to all Db ? How do I know which to install and which ones not to install?
When I run the Patch Oracle Software wizard, It queries my metal ink account and pulls back around 460 patches?
If anybody could help or provide a link to some more information it would be a great help.

CPU patches have the interim patches in them, so no need to do them individually.
I suspect that the patches to apply isn't the issue here; rather, the TESTING you need to do, so as not to introduce nasty stuff by accident. e.g. a new tweak to the CBO/whatever in a CPU may suddenly make lots of your important queries behave strangely. Always patch your test system first, and spend real time ensuring that nothing bizarre has happened to your system. It's always a panic-inducing time uninstalling patches, so get it right up-front.

Are you having the DHCP used for the networking ? My best guess is that either you have the service of the database set to Manual which is not letting the db to be started when the machine is rebooted . What is the error message coming when you are trying to start the db?
