Oracle 11g support for JDK 1.4
Dear All,
We are planning to migrate from Oracle 10.2.0.3 to Oracle 11.2.0.2. However our application server JDK version is in JDK1.4 and we use ojdbc4.jar for JDBC connectivity.
Please let me know, to migrate to Oracle 11g requires JDK1.5 and ojdbc1.5 or can we continue to stay at JDK1.4 and uses ojdbc4.jar to connect to Oracle11g.
Help Appreciated.
There is only one real answer here: test it and test it thoroughly. Asking this question here is pointless, you cannot trust anyone here to give you advice you can rely on. Whatever is said, you have to validate the claims anyway.
Or did you think that Oracle employees were going to answer your question? If so, you are sadly mistaken. Oracle charges money for giving technical support.

Oracle 11g advantages for performance
Hello,
I am doing test of Client side result set cache on oracle 11 g rel2 ,O/S- RHEL
i am doing test as below on 2 Oracle 11g rel2 test servers on RHEL
one oracle 11g rel2 instance is used as server1,from other oracle 11g rel2 server2, i am running queries connecting to server1 through sqlplus,listener(tnsnames )
i run query few times without any client cache settings then
i have set init.ora paras for oracle 11g rel2 for client result cache,cache size/cache lag
i run the same query few times
in both the cases after each run i am noting statistics
select * from V$RESULT_CACHE_OBJECTS;
select * from V$CLIENT_RESULT_CACHE_STATS;
select * from gv$cpool_conn_info;
also autotrace,plan etc
but after using cache this views are getting poplulated ,autiotrace plan shows cache is used
but i cant see any improvement in performance after using client cache like speed,reduce network trip, etc
in fact without using cache/with no hint ,query executes faster
let me know if i am missing something,i believe sqlplus internally using OCI
thanks>
I tested with custom code using java/jdbc thin driver ,connecting same as between 2 oracle 11g2 instance 1 as client other server,running code calling queries from client connecting to server

Unless you plan to provide the information ask for about what it is you are doing there really isn't any point in providing status updates that: you test this, you tested that. You made several statements about what you were doing

You say you are doing a bunch of things
But you don't post any of those results so we can see what it is you are looking at.
No one can comment on things they can't see.
>
You have to be using OCI for client side caching so if you use the Java thin driver but don't use OCI there won't be any cacheing. There also won't be any if it is not enabled or if the query has certain constraints as listed in the doc

Queries that are not Cached
There are queries that are not cached on the OCI client even if the result cache hint is specified. Such queries may be cached on the database if the server result cache feature is enabled (see Oracle Database Concepts, "SQL Query Result Cache" for more information). If a SQL query includes any of the following, then the result set of that query is not cached in the OCI client result cache:
•Views
•Remote objects
•Complex types in the select list
•Snapshot-based or flashback queries
•Queries executed in a serializable, read-only transaction, or inside a flashback session
•Queries that have PL/SQL functions in them
•Queries that have VPD policies enabled on the tables

Oracle 11g ODBC for Windows NT and Windows 95
Hi
Please does anyone knows where can I find this ODBC ? Oracle 11g ODBC for Windows NT and Windows 95
I have test some ODBC from the Oracle page but doesnt work
Thank you
J.A.I'm thinking no.
However I did find this which may help :
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/odbcfaq-128251.pdf
I did the search for 16 bit in it and found some interesting information.
The other piece of information I can share is the Oracle 11 client has issues connecting to Oracle 9.
An Oracle 10 clients might have a better chance, but the catch is finding it.
The last client I remember working on these OS's was Oracle 8. But I doubt that will connect to Oracle 11.

When did Oracle drop support for this?
Hi
I have the 9.2.0.2 Windows installation of Oracle on a test PC here. On 9.2.0.2, the CREATE TABLESPACE statement fails when specifying the TEMPORARY clause. Instead I have to use CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE. The difference of course is that the latter creates a locally managed temp ts while the former creates dictionary managed temp ts.
Does anyone know the exact version at which Oracle stopped support for CREATE TABLESPACE ... TEMPORARY - i.e. dictionary managed temporary tablespaces?
Thanks
MartinFredrik is correct. My system tablespace is locally managed. I tried his proposed tablespace creation and it did fail "ORA-12913: Cannot create dictionary managed tablespace". So there is the answer.
Thanks to both of you for the help.

No Oracle SSO support for POSTing data to protected resource [yet]
Hi,
I am using OHS infront of JBOSS and redirecting all requests from OHS to JBOSS after SSO Authentication.
Everything works fine except that I get 500 error when I try to post data from HTML form.
When i click on a button on a JSP page that submits page with the Form Post, the request goes to the OHS and is not getting forwarded.
OHS log shows the following
127.0.0.1 - - [11/Sep/2007:08:57:23 -0400] "POST /Sample/protected/standard.do HTTP/1.1" 500 788
Proxy_error.log shows the followin error
[Tue Sep 11 08:57:23 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] [ecid: 1189515443:10.6.2.137:268:5568:74,0] \n[OSSO] E09: No Oracle SSO support for POSTing data to protected resource [yet].\n
Any idea?
Thanks
Srikar.This error does no occur in our dev or test environments, only production. A workaround for us was to disable SSO by commenting the line to load it in the file $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf/httpd.conf. The line to comment out looks like: include "/u01/app/oracle/product/mid/Apache/Apache/conf/mod_osso.conf" where the /u01/app... above is the expansion of $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf/mod_osso.conf.
We do not use SSO for our application, so this is not a problem. I next plan to try to figure out why this behaves like this, so I can keep all the server configurations consistent.

I am about to use Oracle XE as a relational database for Mondrian OLAP Server and JPivot as a front end. I managed to install the schema and samples, and everything works fine except XMLA query. I would appreciate if one gets me an insight in Oracle XE support for XMLA.
I donot have a direct answer. However, I have not seen any discussion of intrinsic support for the "XML for Analysis" web service related to any Oracle database edition. Remember that XE does not support any Enterprise Edition-only features, nor any features from STandard Edition that require Java in the database.
Have you tried the configuration against Oracle Database Enterprise or Standard Edition? If so, how successful were you?
And - you mention that everything works fine except ... perhaps you could expand on the results of the except. IOS - What is going wrong, or what error message are you receiving. -
Oracle 9iAS Support for WebUtil
Oracle 9iAS Support for WebUtil
With the official release of WebUtil soon approaching on 10g will this mean that WebUtil will be supported on a 9i achitecture as well?
I have successfully installed the beta version of webutil in a development environment and have been very impressed by its ease of use and functionality. However my bosses are concerened about deploying a beta release on our live 9iAS R2 setup until it is confirmed that Support will be available.
When will WebUtil be officialy released on 10g?
Will Oracle offer support for those using WebUtil on 9i?
Many thanksTim,
I'd like to give Grant the final word on this because he is more involved, but to my understanding and current information, WebUtil will be supported with Oracle Application Server 10g only.
Forms 9i and Forms 10g are not that different in that there is no real migration work needed. For this reason we plan to support Forms10g and Application Server 10g.
The release of WebUtil - again Grant will know better - should be anytime now.

ADF 11g support for Internet Explorer 8 plus x
hi
Given the current situation for ADF 10g, see forum thread "ADF 10g support for Internet Explorer 8" ...
at ADF 10g support for Internet Explorer 8
... I was wondering about the future browser support in ADF 11g.
(Specifically about IE8 the knownissues.html document for JDeveloper and ADF 11g (11.1.1.1.0) currently says "Internet Explorer 8 is neither supported nor certified. If you must use IE8, set the compatibility view settings in your IE8 browser to ALL. In IE8, go to the Tools menu -> Compatibility View Settings and check the last checkbox "Display All Websites In Compatibility View"." and "... IE8 support should be in the upcoming first patch set. ..." Re: PanelStretchLayout on IE8.)
question
(q1) What is the life expectancy of applications built with ADF (Faces) 11g in regard to their future browser support?
many thanks
Jan Vervecken
edit 20091001 : fixed link to knownissues.htmlThanks for your reply Shay.
We plan to officially support IE8 with the next patch release to JDeveloper 11g - currently planned for later this year.That matches what I wrote in my initial post in this forum thread about IE8 support.
We usually only certify browsers after they officially go production.That does not really answer my question (q1) in this forum thread.
It is more like, how can I assess that Oracle will support any successor(s) of IE8 or successor(s) of any currently supported browsers for ADF 11g applications in the future? How long will Oracle support "commonly used browsers" for an ADF 11g application I build today, so how long will I be able to use that application?
How do I answer such questions for ADF 11g applications that should be deployed on the internet (where, as some extranet environments, you typically have not that much (or no) control over which browsers your users use ... although some would like to argue with that, see forum thread "ADF Faces RC browser support and browser market share")?
(By the way, do you have any feedback for the forum thread "ADF 10g support for Internet Explorer 8"?)

The danger of memory target in Oracle 11g - request for discussion.
Hello, everyone.
This is not a question, but kind of request for discussion.
I believe that many of you heard something about automatic memory management in Oracle 11g.
The concept is that Oracle manages the target size of SGA and PGA. Yes, believe it or not, all we have to do is just to tell Oracle how much memory it can use.
But I have a big concern on this. The optimizer takes the PGA size into consideration when calculating the cost of sort-related operations.
So what would happen when Oracle dynamically changes the target size of PGA? Following is a simple demonstration of my concern.

alter session set events '10053 trace name context off';With above test case, I found that
1. Oracle invalidates the query when internal pga aggregate size changes, which is quite natural.
2. With changed pga aggregate size, Oracle recalculates the cost. These are excerpts from the both of the 10053 trace files.
-- First 10053 trace file

PARAMETERS WITH ALTERED VALUES

_smm_max_size = 13107 KB
_smm_px_max_size = 32768 KB
optimizer_use_sql_plan_baselines = false
optimizer_use_invisible_indexes = true
Bug Fix Control Environment10053 trace file clearly says that Oracle recalculates the cost of the query with the change of internal pga aggregate target size. So, there is a great danger of unexpected plan change while Oracle dynamically controls the memory segments.
I believe that this is a desinged behavior, but the negative side effect is not negligible.
I just like to hear your opinions on this behavior.
Do you think that this is acceptable? Or is this another great feature that nobody wants to use like automatic tuning advisor?

(I'm still in dark age on this automatic memory target management of 11g. More research in need!)
I think that this is very clear and natural behavior. I just want to point out that this would result in unwanted catastrophe under special cases, especially with some logic holes and bugs.
