Oracle 8.1.6  on Mandrake 8.2

Could Anyone tell me the steps to install Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 8.2?
Issues as:
- how is the best amount of swap?
- how is the best amount of disk?
- disk partitions may be created in advance of installation?
If it's not easy and you have a howto file you can send attached for [email protected]
Other question, musta Itry to install 9i r2, instead to 8i?
Thanks in advance.
Eduardo - Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Ok, I was able to install O8i 8.1.6.1.0 just fine, but guess what you got to do? You got to turn off your num lock, go figure. If you don't turn of your num lock all buttons are frozen on the U installer.

  • Probleme to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.1

    Hi,
    I have some problem to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.1.
    I log on a non root user and launch "./runInstaller" but nothing happens. It's only written "please wait"...
    I see on the Oracle site that I must use glibc 2.1 but only if Oracle is already installed? So if you could give me some indications?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I have also the same problem : when I launch the program "./runInstaller", nothing appears.
    However, I thought I found a good solution on a forum, but it doesn't run.
    The explication is given at the following address :
    http://colalug.org/ml-archive/0210/msg00051.html
    The only point where I'm not sure is when it's said to use a specific library in the "LINUX STUFF" section. They are using glibc2.1 and I'm using glibc2.3.
    I have also changed the "ASSUME_KERNEL" variable to the version of my kernel, that's 2.4.21.
    What are your suggestions ?
    Thanks to give me an answer.

  • Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.0

    Hi All.
    I'm having some strange problems with Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.0.
    Mandrake is installed and running fine, when I start the ./runInstaller the jre starts up but uses 100% cpu time. I never get the splash screen and the installation just hangs there forever using all my CPU time. (I left it running for 4 hrs and still never got the splash screen)
    I know Mandrake 9.0 is very new but I really need to get 8.1.7 running on it. I installed it on Mandrake 8.0 with no problem but I dont want to have to go back to 8.0.
    Does anyone know any compatibilty issues with Oracle that could be causing the installer to hang so early.
    Thanks
    Neil

    I am trying to install Oracle 9i R2 on Mandrake 9.0 . Everything went fine until the Database Configuration assistant started. It fails to create. I am unable to create the DB but am able to connect to other databases on the network using SQL Plus.
    Can you let me know what configuration we need to have ( any updates u have performed to Mandrake 9.0 to get the DB installed and running smoothly).
    Please let me know if you have come across any documentation for installing 9iR2 on Mandrake 9.0

  • Installation problem with Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 8.1

    Hi all,
    I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 (Rel 3) on Mandrake Linux 8.1. I changed all the parameters, tested everything, created the users (oracle & apache) and groups (oinstall & dba) as per the documentation. I downloaded the Oracle's "tar" file from the Oracle's web site. I unzipped that in "/shared" directory on my PC. I changed to "/shared/Disk1" directory and gave "./runInstaller". A window is opening with the following buttons.
    About
    Deinstall products
    Exit
    Help
    Installed products
    Previous (disabled)
    Next
    Only "About" and "Deinstall products" buttons are working. None of the other buttons are working. When I press "Next" nothing is happening.
    Could anybody help with this problem. I really appreciate it.
    Thank you very much in advance,
    Murali.

    Hi all,
    This problem got solved. Its very silly thing. Number lock should be off, when you are running Oracle Installer. It worked for me. (This is for Mandrake Linux 8.1)
    Regards,
    Murali.

  • Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 7.2?

    Has anyone been able to get the Universal Installer to work on Mandrake 7.2? It starts on my box, but then none of the buttons in the lower bar (Exit, Help, Installed products, Previous, and Next) work. It's weird, because if I click on "About Oracle Universal Installer..." or "Deinstall Products..." they work, but if I click any other buttons, nothing seems to happen.
    Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 8.0?

    I downloaded Oracle 8.1.7 from OTN, installed jdk 1.1.8 v3 from

    Is dificult to help you whitout the details of your particular installation. But this procedure work perfectly for an installation "out of the box" of Linux Mandrake 8.1
    a) Install Linux Mandrake and choose to install the Development Tools Set. After installation, deinstall rpm kaffe (java runtime).
    b) Do the preinstallation task for Oracle 8.1.7 as explained in the Installation Manual. Is not necesary to recompile the kernel.
    c) login with the oracle user for installation. Use Gnome for as your desktop (KDE doesn't work).
    d) run the Oracle Universal Installer.
    e) When the installation stop for link problems apply the patch glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz (http://download.oracle.com/otn/linux/oracle8i/glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz)
    f) After the patch application, press "Retry" button in the error dialog of (e) step.
    g) Everything must work fine.
    h) After veryfing your installation make your customizations.

  • Oracle 8.0.5 on Mandrake 7.0

    We are having problems installing the above. We get a core dump when starting svrmgrl and so have tried to install the Oracle glibc patch, but this fails as it cannot find i386-glibc20-linux-gcc. On Redhat this is installed as part of the RH5.2 compatibility libraries, but the Mandrake compat libs don't seem to have this. Can anyone help ?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    For RH 6.1, I'm guessing you're having problems when it tries to compile/link the Oracle code. This is because Oracle needs a different set of libraries that do not exist on RH 6.1 (glibc). There are RPM's that you need to install on RH 6.1 to get the compile/links to work (About 6 of them). To find these RPM's go to the page where you would download the Oracle Server for Linux. There is a README file for Oracle on RH 6.1 (And other Linux distributions as well). I think this will help.
    I currently have Oracle 8.0.5 on RH 6.1 and am having no problems. However, I was running RH 5.2, and then upgraded to 6.1. Therefor I didn't have to deal with the install problems.

    We don't offer that by the looks of it.
    The iAS forums should have the definitive answer I would think.

    Ok, I was able to install O8i 8.1.6.1.0 just fine, but guess what you got to do? You got to turn off your num lock, go figure. If you don't turn of your num lock all buttons are frozen on the U installer.

  • Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 7.1b

    Has anyone successfully installed 8.1.6 on
    the Mandrake 7.1 beta distro? I was running
    Redhat 6.0 and had it installed, but just upgraded to the newest Mandrake and when I run the installer about 7 threads start up, and I get a grey square (splash screen?) and that is it? Any ideas, suggestions?
    Thanks for any Help

    I have had endless problems with 8,1,5,2 and Mandrake. I actually got it to install on 7.0, and I told dbassist to produce scripts to run manaully. However when I run the scripts the svrmgrl will not start the database and eventually times out with PMON did not start ...
    So I tried Mandrake 6.1 and I can't even get the install to work. The jre craps out with with some sort of dump crash, it shows the install screen briefly and then dies.
    I checked other posts and tried to get my env vars correct, I also tried adding DISPLAY and xhost, but to no avail. I even tried the order of env variables but nothing doing.
    7.0 uses the 2.2.14 kernel and 6.1 uses the 2.2.13 kernel
    Well next choice is to try a Red Hat 6.2 install....
    any ides would be interesting. This has taken me two days so far...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
    I sucessfuly installed 8.1.6 release on Mandrake 7.1. I think the variable $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not correctly set on your system ?

  • Oracle 8.1.7 installation on Mandrake 9.2 Linux

    Hello Oracle Linux experts,
    I've got problem with installation of Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.2 linux... I know that Mandrake not certified for running Oracle 8i - but may be someone could help ? I managed to install it successfully on 8.x and 9.0 versions
    of Mandrake - but 9.2 (currently installed one giving me problems). I could finish the installation - but unfortunately not all oracle modules (including oracle binary) built successfully. And I've got some errors on a linking stage (even if I run setup_stubs.sh - and according to log file generated by this script all modules have been rebuild) Any suggestions ? Am I missing something ? This are the steps that I was using for Mandrake 9.0 and now I am trying the same ones on 9.2:
    ---cut---
    This is what I've done:
    1. Create oracle installation account (in my case 'ora817' and use 'dba' as primary group) As shell for this account I used 'bash'
    2. Create all required directory structure for Oracle installation i.e.
    ORACLE_BASE=/apps/ora_817
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.7
    3. In home directory of ora817 use create / update file .bash_profile:
    ---.bash_profile---
    # .bash_profile
    # Get the aliases and functions
    if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
    . ~/.bashrc
    fi
    # User specific environment and startup programs
    # PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
    # export PATH
    # unset USERNAME
    JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java; export JAVA_HOME
    ORACLE_BASE=/apps/ora_817; export ORACLE_BASE
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.7; export ORACLE_HOME
    PATH=${PATH}:${ORACLE_HOME}/bin; export PATH
    if [${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} == ""]
    then
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib
    else
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
    fi
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
    umask 002
    unset LANG
    unset LANGUAGE
    ---.bash_profile---
    4. Update / create .bashrc file in the same directory:
    ---.bashrc---
    # .bashrc
    # User specific aliases and functions
    # Source global definitions
    if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
    . /etc/bashrc
    fi
    unset LANG
    unset LANGUAGE
    unset LC_MONETARY
    unset LC_NUMERIC
    unset LC_MESSAGES
    unset LC_COLLATE
    unset LC_CTYPE
    unset LC_TIME
    unset NLS_LANG
    ---.bashrc---
    Then you would have to logout and login back so that changes take place and that's it - your Oracle Universal Installer will start !!!
    Few other notes:
    Before installation you would have to make sure that you got Java JDK-1.1.8 - file should be called:
    jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2
    You could find it on the net.
    During installation there will be step when you would have to run file $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh - make sure that you edit this file before execution:
    Line 102:
    RMF=/bin/rm -f
    is changed into
    RMF="/bin/rm -f"
    and line 156
    RUID=`/usr/bin/id|$AWK -F\( '{print $2}'|$AWK -F\) '{print $1}`
    is changed into
    RUID=`/bin/id|$AWK -F\( '{print $2}'|$AWK -F\) '{print $1}'`
    Please note that id command in Mandrake 9.0 linux located in /bin directory and not in /usr/bin !
    Also path for 'sed' module should be changed from /usr/local/bin to just /bin
    After installation I suggest to unset LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
    env variable and install and run glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz package that will relink modules for use with newer version of glibc. Copy this package to $ORACLE_HOME directory, untar it - i.e.
    tar -xvzf ./glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gzand then run ./setup_stubs.sh script. (make sure that you do so by the same user that was used during oracle installation)
    This file you could get from oracle OTN web site.

    Regards,
    Alex

    Just some additional information - I think that I found the problem - but no solution so far:
    When I am trying to rebuild (relink) oracle (using relink script from $ORACLE_HOME/bin - it worked for all other options apart from 'oracle' and as a result oracle binary in
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin is missing....) this is kind of error that I've got:
    ---cut---

  • OUI Hangs during Oracle 8i install on Mandrake 7.1

    I have gone through all of the instructions I have found on this forum for installing 8i on Linux. I have downloaded and installed the JRE, created the oracle user, added the necessary lines to my .bash_profile, etc.
    When I change to the /install/linux directory on my 8i installation cd and try to run ./runInstaller, the initial OUI welcome screen comes up. When I click on the "next" button, nothing happens, and I can't proceed. Has anyone out there experienced this? Any suggestions?

    Which version of oracle ?
    It works with oracle 8.1.6 and Mandrake 7.2
    Hi have tested oracle 8.1.5 / 8.1.6 on mandrake 7.1 and Corporate and it works too
