Phil,
By "multiple result sets open", do you mean you are using REF Cursors, or do you have multiple statements opened, each with its own ResultSet? If you could post an example showing what the problem is, that would be very helpful.
You don't happen to have 'for update' clause in your SQL statement, do you?
Thanks

  • Why and How is Linux is Suitable OS for Oracle !

Can anybody help me in finding Clues that how Linux
Operating System suitable in all way for the Oracle?
What is the reason behind that technological point of view and also in all ways?
Please provide me the answer with some suitable links and hints.
    Rest is fine
Oracle is not just a Database, its lifeStyle.

Here is an answer to your question:
    THE CASE FOR LINUX
Oracle has adopted Linux as the default operating system for the Oracle10g Grid Computing software platform. There are five key factors driving Linux adoption by Oracle customers today.
    1. Linux is focused.
Other operating systems may offer broader, deeper functionality than Linux, but Linux offers all the functionality needed to gain maximum advantage from Oracle. Alternative operating systems may have better scalability, availability and manageability, but Oracle now delivers those benefits via functionality delivered above the operating system (RAC). Linux is fit for purpose in an Oracle environment.
Customers can have full confidence in the suitability of Linux for use in an Oracle environment because Oracle's Linux Kernel Development Team has been working for several years now to ensure that Linux has all the features needed to fully support Oracle software.
    2. Linux is ubiquitous, popular and vendor neutral.
The Linux operating system is available for almost every hardware environment. Once an organisation has Linux skills, those skills can be leveraged across commodity servers, RISC servers and even on the mainframe. Linux is popular and there are many skilled Linux resources available today. Linux is also vendor neutral, so companies are happy running it on machines from a wide variety of vendors including Sun, HP, IBM and Dell.
    3. Linux is fully supported by Oracle.
The open source nature of Linux allows Oracle to offer comprehensive, code-level support for the Linux operating system. Oracle has back-to-back agreements with Red Hat and Novell which ensure that any fixes created by Oracle in response to customer issues are woven back into the base Linux distributions. Linux is the only operating system that is engineered and supported by Oracle today.
    4. Linux is fast, open and reliable.
Linux is a high quality operating system. The open source development process ensure that Linux is built to a quality standard, not a release date. The enormous community of Linux users combined with its open source nature ensure that the Linux kernel is very stable. Linux has been shown to deliver exceptional levels of performance and reliability on commodity hardware.
    5. Linux has been adopted and endorsed by Oracle.
Larry Ellison has said "We will be running our whole business on Linux" and today Oracle is just about there. The majority of Oracle’s developers now work on Linux, Oracle runs its internal ERP and CRM systems on Linux and Oracle hosts many customer systems on Linux. Oracle's public adoption and promotion of Linux has been an important factor in the rapid take-up of Linux by the Oracle customer base.
    I hope this helps.

  • Upgrading oracle database 9.2.0.5 to 9.2.0.8 for Oracle E-Business suite

I have applied patch to upgrade Oracle E-business suite(11.5.10) database from 9.2.0.5 to 9.2.0.8. but after applying patch also it showing 9.2.0.5. please help me.

    Thanks Hussain for ur reply
server OS is windows server 2003 std. i have performed following steps
    1.     First I installed 11.5.10.2 Technology Stack Validation Patch (Revision 1 July, 2005) on both application (D:\Oracle\visappl) and database (D:\oracle\Visdb\9.2.0) home. (p4318672_11i_GENERIC.zip)
    2.     Then I review the html log file generated for both the home. Html file generated for oracle home with ALL PASS status. But html file for DBMS oracle home has return FAIL status. I review the reason in txkVal11510MP_DB.html. it gives me following reason to fail
“11.5.10.2 requires that your Oracle 9iR2 database version to be 9.2.0.6.0 or higher on Windows platform. Please refer to Oracle MetaLink Note 216550.1 "Oracle Applications Release 11i with Oracle 9i Release 2 (9.2.0)" to upgrade to the latest certified version of Oracle 9iR2. After upgrading to 9.2.0.6, you must apply 9.2.0.6 patch 5 ( 4287598 ) before upgrading to 11.5.10.2. “
    3.     I went through the Metalink Note 216550.1. I refer Section 2 of it. I applied patch 5035661. when I applied this patch , output of this patch mentioned that OUI 2.2 is already installed on both the Home.
    4.     Then I applied 9.2.0.6 patch 5 (4287598). Prior to this I applied patch 2617419 because patch 4287598 require OPatch 1.0.0.0.52.
    5.     I performed patch 4287598 post installation task also. I didn’t apply windows patch 6, because my database was not showing 9.2.0.8 as required by windows patch 6.
    6.     so this is the complete task list I have done to upgrade database from 9.2.0.5 to 9.2.0.8
output of given query is as below:
    Oracle9i Catalog Views     9.2.0.5.0     VALID

  • Tuning Oracle APPS 11i Start with

    Hi Hussain/Helios,
I am new to Oracle APPS, and am working oracle apps 11i 11.5.10.2 with 10.2.5.0, the database and application was upgraded by previous dba. which left almost 3-4 months before.
now my question is i want to have a performance tuning for Oracle apps environment, can you please suggest some key points for starting with and some good links for future usage.
Other thing is i have used find command on my linux box and found many log files which are greater than 1000K on apps tier (forms/reports/web), and similiarly db tier (db/admin/concurrent).
can i just remove all these logfiles using os (rm) command and is it feasible with production environment on running mode or is it not feasible and i should use some other ways/etc.

can you please suggest some key points for starting with and some good links for future usage. Please check below MOS doc:-
A Holistic Approach to Performance Tuning Oracle Applications Systems [ID 69565.1]
Configuring various JVM tuning parameters for Oracle E-Business suite 11i and R12 [ID 567551.1]
Tuning is something that require more analysis less action, first you need to answer:-
    1) Why do you need tuning? is it proactive or some incident happend?
    2) Where are you facing issues? i.e. which module, form, report or whole application.
    3) Number of users facing issues? i.e. is it single user, user at one location or all users.
    4) Has something changed in past that might have triggered this need?
Theri are various components involved in tuning that start from :-
    1) user machine
    2) network
    3) Application tier.
    4) Database tier.
Application tier can be further divided into:-
    1) Apache server(JVM, modplsql, jserv etc etc
    2) Form Server
    3) Concurrent processing server
    4) Discovered if using,
    5) XML publisher..
and like wise other component using.
If you are looking to tune then i believe start from application tier first, pick one by one componets, like if your users are facing issues with login then use note that i have provided, if users are not satisifed with time taken to complete concurrent request then you might have to tune it and likewise.
can i just remove all these logfiles using os (rm) command and is it feasible with production environment on running mode or is it not feasible and i should use some other ways/etc.Do not rm files because it might be in use by some process and ti might then not be able to release space, its better to trim the file. do cat file >
Log file you have mentioned can be removed depedning upon your company policy if any.
    Thanks,
    JD

  • Oracle Client(8.0.5) installation on Linux(6.0)

    Please Help,
These are the steps followed in the Oracle
    client installation of the Linux
    version
    1. Loaded SQLNET, TCP/IP Adapter and sqlplus from the Oracle CD for Linux.
    2. While running SQLPLUS it gave the 'Missing Library file'
    3. Added LD_LIBRARY_PATH parameter to .profile, problem solved.
    4. While running SQLPLUS a new message 'Segmentation Fault - Core dumped'
    started coming.
After analysing it was observed that none of the Linux memory parametre
required for oracle had been tuned. these parameters are :-
    shmmax,shmseg, shmmin, shmmni, semmns, semmni
We know the value of these parameters but the problem is that in linux we
are not able to find the Kernel paramater file,
as we do not know the Kernel parameter file name and the location in which
    it is situated.
I have done the configuration of Oracle in Sun Solaris successfully and
also modified the Kernel parameter. the following in the sample data
extracted from the /etc/system file present in Sun Solaris.
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=208388608
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=15
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=150
    set semsys:seminfo_semmns=250
    set semsys:seminfo_semmni=100
What I request is that kindly tell me how and where to update the same in
the Linux for installing Oracle Client(8.0.5) on Linux(6.0).Regards And Thanks
    Sanjay Kr. Pandey

You'll have to be prepared to wade through and understand the Linux way of recompiling your kernel. The files can be located using the "find" command. There is some great "HOW-TO"s in the Linux RedHat site.
Tip: Be very careful how you answer the "make config" questions because it can mess up the resulting VMLINUZ object. Also, be sure to place secondary entry in your "lilo.conf" to allow you a graceful way of getting back to the old kernel should the new one fail.
    Good Luck!

  • Is RAID 5 not recommended for Oracle database ?

    - I am planning to install Oracle database
    Here are the specs:
    - Dell PowerEdge T610 server
    - Windows 2008 R2 (64-bit )
    - 24 GB memory
    - Oracle 10g database (64-bit database)
    - Our database is for an ERP based client server application
    - Will have around 35-45 users
    - Will have around 150-200 transaction per day ( 8AM-5PM) only database
    - database would be around 10-15GB (data files)
Now I am planning to buy the hardware server, I heard that RAID 5 is not recommended for Oracle database.
    Is it true ?
What do you recommended for Oracle database ? RAID 5 (or) RAID 1

    johnpau2013 wrote:
I heard that RAID 5 is not recommended for Oracle database.
Is it true ?Kind off... as Oracle (as per the RAC Starter Kits for example) explicitly recommends SAME - as in Stripe And Mirror Everything.
This is a combination of RAID1 and RAID0.
However, you will also get whitepapers from storage vendors like EMC in partnership with Oracle, that explains how to configure and use RAID5 storage and how effective this is. And as some will tell you, RAID5 can work just fine with Oracle... and some others will grimace and tell you how bad an idea that is from personal experiences.
In a nutshell - RAID5 requires a parity calculation on each write. That is a very expensive overhead if that calculation impacts the fwrite() (file write) command of a process writing data to disk. It significantly slows down the write operation.
However, if that parity calculation is done asynchronously and does not effect the elapsed time for a fwrite(), then a fwrite() to RAID5 is as fast or as slow as it would be to RAID10 for example.
Unsure how many modern storage system supports off-loading the parity calculation and not impacting the write I/O call. This can be done using ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits), specialised s/w on the storage server, etc.
Whatever you put in place - test the RAID config thoroughly up front and ensure that performance is up to specs. There's a utility called fio (<i>Flexible I./O</i>) written by a Linux kernel hacker that works for Oracle. It is an excellent utility to use to generate and test I/O - but it is Linux and Unix based.
Any specific reason using Windows? Linux is by far a more predominant 64bit operating system than Windows, and has significant higher market share in Oracle RDBMS than Windows. Given the fact that over 93% of the 500 fastest computer systems on this planet runs Linux, I'm always kind of amazed that some would still use Windows as a server-side o/s for Oracle.

  • Error BACKINT for Oracle Connection

    hi @ maxdb gurus...
i have a problem backing up my maxdb 7.6.0.033 (serving for a mysap.erp2005 on aix 5.3) using the backint mechanism.
-> backup media created: two pipes and one parallel medium containing these pipes
    -> bsi.env has been created
    -> backint4sapdb.sar contains
4 staging areas each with 4096 MB
       files per backint call 2
-> maxdb is about 57 gb perm. data area (and 6 gb temp.)
i use the backup wizard (dbmgui) to invoke a complete data backup which starts (pipes are created in the file system) and runs until approx. 4 gb...then the backup terminates with error "-24920 backup operation was unsuccesful. The database request failed with error -8020"
what might be the problem? are the staging areas too small? is says that when using only one stage area it must hold the complete database...can i then conclude that 4 staging areas must hold the database as well - meaning they must be around 15 gb each?
    GreetZ, AH

yup...but that also means that the sum of the staging areas need as much space as the database ie. around 70 gigs netto! the staging files will be filled and thus grow until the defined size, meaning that the file system(s) need to be big enough!
everything works fine until the stage files are filled (up to the defined size) and then stops...when i change the sizes of the staging areas i can reproduce the error!
i compared the tsm implementation of that system with another system (live cache...kind of small regarding db size...) and found nothing serious...

  • How to create a DSN for Oracle Provider for OLE DB in a web server

    Dear Guys,
I am a Excel VBA developer.
My requirement is from the Excel I have to call a Stored Procedure with REF CURSOR.
Normally I am using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver for connecting Oracle DB, which is in the Server .
We have users using the Excel reports across the globe.
Sending Excel report is enough, the clients can connect DB from Excel via the DSN created in a web server.
But, I came to know that we can't access the REF CURSOR using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver and it is possible to access by using ORA OLE DB Provider.
I have installed Oracle Client in my machine and tried using ORA OLE DB Provider like below
    +con.ConnectionString = "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle.1;User ID=user_name;" & _+
    +"Password=pwd;Data Source=Oracle;"+
The Excel worked fine in my machine but when I run the same Excel in my user machine in a different country I couldn't connect to DB.
Because the user machine doesn't have Oracle Client installed. We have n number of users across the world and we can't install Oracle client individually.
So, I have the plan of creating a DSN in a web sever as I used for Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Driver.
But, my doubt is how can I create a DSN for accessing ORA OLE DB provider? Is there any driver for ORA OLE DB provider? or is there any alternate solution for my issue?
Can anybody help me on this ASAP?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Satz

I have created a DSN in a web server (a Public IP machine) that is mapped to a Oracle DB.
In my Excel using VBA coding, with the help of RDO object I will call the DSN in the Web server using the connection string like "DSN=ORS;UID=SDATA;PWD=SDATA;"
This is working fine and in this case the client machine doesn't need Oracle client to be installed or any TNS entry.
The user can run the Excel report by clicking a button and the click event connects the DSN in the web server (through its URL) and routes to the mapped DB and fetches the quried data.
Please note that the above DSN is created based on Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver.
But the issue is using the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver I couldnt call the SP with Ref Cursor.
When I searched in Internet I came to know using the provider oraoledb.oracle we can call SP that uses REF CURSOR.
Now my question is what is the driver name that I can use to create a DSN to make use of the provider oraoledb.oracle for calling the SP with REF CURSOR from Excel VBA coding ?
    Appreciate your prompt reply.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sathish

    Bingo.... I got it.
Thanks for your hint about the ./.profile. I was setting env variables in .cshrc file and my default shell for "oracle" user was sh.

  • Re: 32 Bit ODBC Driver for Oracle 11g 11.2.0.1.0

    Hi,
Were you able to resolve the problem with these troubleshooting measures ?
Please let me know since i am facing similar issues like yours.
I am using a Windows 7 64 bit and from QTP installed on this machine ,  i am trying to connect to Oracle database.
Now initially i installed a 64 bit ODBC for Oracle . But when i did that and ran the Script below :
    Set objDatabase = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    Set rs=createobject("adodb.recordset")
    objDatabase.open "DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient11g_home1} ; DATA SOURCE=Oracle; SERVER= xyz ; DATABASE=abc1; UID=abc ; PASSWORD= abc123;"
rs.Open "select * from tablename", objDatabase
    'result1 = objDatabase.Execute("select * from tablename")
    'msgbox result1
    Do while not rs.eof
    print rs.fields("columnname")
    rs.movenext
    Loop
    print rs.fields("columnname")
    it gives me an error
“[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application”
So i am assuming that i need to install the 32 bit ODBC drivers for Oracle as well in addition to the already installed 64 bit drivers ..
    Any thoughts on this ?

64 bit apps need 64 bit Oracle client software.
32 bit apps need 32 bit Oracle client software.
You should be able to tell the bit-ness of the app by checking the Process tab in task manager to see if it has *32 next to it.
You can install both 32 bit and 64 bit Oracle client software on the same box, but you need to do it into different homes, and different oracle_base should also be used.
There isnt an Oracle client install bundle that installs both, you'll need to do each separately.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg
