Oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3-11 - AIX 5.3

Hej,
I am a completely new in this:
We have a server running AIX 4.3-11 (32bit) with Oracle 8.1.7.
The plan is to upgrade the AIX to 5.3-3 (64bit).
The question: Is the old oracle going to run under the new AIX?
Variation: If I have to upgrade the Oracle to 10g are there any predictable problems with the old databases?
Thanks for the help in advance and sorry if I ask something stupid - I am far away from the terminology :/
- MIK

Check metalink note 291024.1
It should be possible to skip point 3 and install on AIX 11.1.0.7 skipping 10.2.0.4 and then use transport_tablespace exp/imp

  • Moving Oracle 9i database from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3

    Hi,
We are planing to move few of our Oracle 9i databases from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3 on another server. Will offline backup/restore work in this case ? The databases are fairly big (> 1 TB each). Looking for some advice.. Thanks.

    Hi Kamran,
As the DBs are fairly large ( approx. 1 TB each), how long it would take to copy the databases to the target server using RMAN DUPLICATE .. ? Do you think offline backup/restore would be a better approach ? Both the source and target boxes are co-located in the same data center. Thanks !
    Rgds,
HimansuI assume that RMAN will be more faster than hard copy/paste (cold backup). I can't say how much it will probably take to take RMAN DUPLICATE, but it should be faster than cold backup

  • Porting Forms/Reports when migrating Oracle 9i DB from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3

    Hi,
Looking for advice on how to port Oracle Forms/Reports modules when moving our Oracle 9i database from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3 platform. Details are as below:
Oracle Forms and Reports v6i (There is no version upgrade in Forms & Reports)
Database is Oracle 9i (No upgrade in database)
There is upgrade in hardware only : from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3
The application is having some 8000 forms/reports modules
Do we need to recompile the forms/reports after porting the 9i database to AIX 5.3 ?
Any direction would be appreciated .. Thanks !!
    Regards,
    Himansu

    Hi,
Thanks for the response, we are going to recompile the Forms/Reports in the new environemnt.
Just wondering how much time it may take to recompile all the 8000 odd forms/reports modules.. ? Will 10 seconds per form/report module be safe enough for the compilation ? Because in a batch file every time it is going to connect to the database while compiling a module, I am assumming it may take some 5 seconds to 10 seconds for the compilation. Thanks for the help again.

  • Oracle 8.1.7/9iAS installation problem on IBM AIX 5.1 - loadext fails

    Dear colleagues,
tried to install Oracle 8.1.7 and then Oracle 9iAS over AIX 5.1 on IBM eServer p-series. The installation fails in the very beginning - loadext for post-wait Kernel Extension (/etc/pw-syscall) fails with 'exec format error'. Documentation states 'AIX 4.3.3 or later required', no clear indication for AIX5, though. Any ideas or suggestions?
I understand, it is possible to roll back to AIX 4.3.3, although machine came with 5.1 pre-installed.
    Alexei

I had the same problem and finally used the loadext program from the 64-bit cpio-archive (Disk1). Just replace the file and startover again.
    It worked and still works!
    Hope this helps.

  • Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 Installation on IBM AIX 5L platform

I have a problem with the installation of Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 in AIX
After I have followed the required steps in the installation guide, finally I run
    ./runInstaller
But this command stops the installation at some point, giving an error telling that the value of DISPLAY parameter is not authorized by the server.
To the display parameter I have put the name of the server trying it even with IP address and also appending :0.0
But I cannot figure out why installation doesn't work
If you could help me respondonding my question or either with any doc's about oracle 9.2.0.1.0 installation over AIX version 5, it would be very helpful to me
    Thank you for your time

You have an access problem (X-Windows) on the machine, you are calling runInstaller. Try 'xhost +' or 'xhost servername'.

  • Migrate oracle 9207 DB 8 TB size frm Solaris to AIX?dont want  Exp/Imp

    Hi Guys,PLz help
I want migrate 8TB oracle database from Solaris 8 to AIX 5.
In my last post on the same topic I was told to refer Metalink notes
    291024.1,Note:77523.1,Note:277650.1
acc to these notes 'EXPORT/IMPORT IS THE ONLY OPTION TO MIGRATE FROM SOLARIS TO AIX'.
I was not convinced as In http://dba.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=9523
    I read
"As both solaris and AIX are UNIX O/S, cloning the DB is also possible from source box to target box"
    Also
whats the role of "If the endianness is the same"??????
Can you guys plz comment on this again.....as I'm really confused because exp/imp of 8TB
is going to take half of my life :)
PLz tell in any other option in 9.2.0.7?If we have
    Thanx

    You can do
    SELECT PLATFORM_NAME, ENDIAN_FORMAT
FROM V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORMto check endianness of different platform.
-- Note, the view is only on 10g and above.
datafiles from different endian format can't be directly copied over and use. On 10g you have option to use RMAN convert endianness.
with that said, since Solaris and AIX are all big engianness. That means you can directly copy datafiles over and clone database without using exp/imp.
this article has a list of how to clone

  • Oracle Database 9.2.0.6 is supported on AIX 5.3

I am going to install a database oracle 9.2.0.6 on AIX 5.3.
    It is supported by Oracle?

Absolutely it is, but actually there is no 9.2.0.6.0, there is a 9.2.0.1.0 install media, and the 9.2.0.6.0 patchset.
It comes to my attention why would you like to upgrade your database to 9.2.0.6.0 specifically when there is the 9.2.0.8.0 and Oracle has announced this will be the last patchset it will release for the 9iR2 database. Additionally all CPU's will be based on 9.2.0.8.0. So only if you have a specific reason to upgrade up to 6.0 I suggest you to apply the latest 8.0 patchset.

I installed Oracle 8.1.6 on Debian "Potato" and wondered why the database won't start up after rebooting. The dbstart script was called and it gave the message that the database was started. But when I wanted to make a connection I always got the message ORA-01034: ORACLE not available.
ps ax showed me that no ora_* tasks were started. Finally I solved the problem. The $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart script searches for the version of Oracle with an awk request. This request is wrong for the Linux version. It checks for $ORACLE_HOME/bin/svrmgrl and then makes an awk request. The correct request is:
    awk '
    /Edition (Release|Version)/ { print substr($5,3,1) }'

  • DataGuard 10gr2 (10.2.0.4) AIX 5.2-primary Aix 6.1-Standby possible?

We currently have 10.2.0.4 DG configuration running on three AIX 5.2 servers (one primary, two standbys). We will be installing some new servers that will be pre-loaded with AIX 6.1. If we were to install 10.2.0.4 on these new AIX 6.1 servers is it possible to create additonal standbys on them? Or is there a limitation in 10gR2 Datagurad that the OS versions must be exactly the same?
Doc ID: 413484.1 indicates that this is possible but I am unclear if this only applies to DataGuard 11g?
Thanks in advance. It would also be appreciated if anyone knows of an Oracle document that definitively states whether this can or cannot be done.

Whilst I've only done AIX upgrades at the level like 5.2 to 5.3 etc using standbys, there is no reason that a major OS release level shouldn't function correctly. As long as both run the same DB software patch level (10.2.0.4 as you've stated) then it should be fine. If you're really paranoid raise an SR with Metalink and get it in writing.

  • Distributed Environment (WIN + AIX) to Full Environment (AIX)

    Hi,
We have a distributed environment (Windows + AIX). Only CMS runs in Windows Server and the other services in AIX server, these was because we wanted to configure SSO.
Now, we want to run all services only in the AIX server without Windows Server.
Is it possible to create the cms in AIX and delete the cms from Windows? What are the correct steps to change the distributed environment for a full one in AIX?
    Any ideas would be helpful...

  • Can I install oracle 10.1 on AIX 6.1?

I have to install oracle 10 on AIX 6.1 , i found that oracle 10.2.0.3 provides support to AIX 6.1
But I can install oracle 10.1 or 10.2.0.1 on AIX 6.1 by using the following command
    /runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs
it will install oracle on AIX6.1 as it will ignore the system prerequiste ...
What does this mean? U can install but it's not suppose to work?

    Hello,
I think you should install Oracle 10.2.0.1 then you upgrade to *10.2.0.4* as soon as possible.
If Oracle certify AIX 6.1 starting with 10.2.0.3, it means that for a Production system you shouldn't
stay in 10.2.0.1 or 10.2.0.2. Else, if you experience any bug you won't have support. They will ask
you to apply the latest patchset (10.2.0.4).
The Patchset are cumulative, so after installing Oracle and creating your database, you just have to
apply the *10.2.0.4* accordingly to the Readme instructions.
About *10.1*, it's an older release and it's not certified for AIX 6.1. So, you may forget it.
    Hope this help.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

  • SAP R/3 ENTERPRISE 4.7 / ORACLE 9i / kernel 640 for AIX 6.1

    Hello,
We plan to migrate our SAP systems from AIX 5.3 to AIX 6.1.
We are currently running a SAP R/3 ENTERPRISE 4.7 on ORACLE 9i with a 640 kernel 64 bits UC.
I would like to know if AIX 6.1 is validated for our system (SAP 4.7, ORCALE 9i and kernel 640).
    Thanks.

I would like to know if AIX 6.1 is validated for our system (SAP 4.7, ORCALE 9i and kernel 640).
    Read
Note 1137862 - Using SAP systems with AIX 6.1
    Note 1087498 - Support für AIX 6.1
The first note will tell you the necessary TL/SP you need to install. The second note tells you about the minimum kernel version.
What does not work is Oracle 9.2 --> not supported under AIX 6.1 (http://service.sap.com/pam or Oracle Metalink 169706.1).
Since Oracle 9.2 is out of support already I highly suggest upgrading to Oracle 10.2.0.4 and using the latest 640_EX2 kernel.
