Oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 5.3
I have existing Oracle Database 8.1.7 running on AIX 5.2. My plan is to install 11g Software as different ORACLE_HOME and upgrade 8.1.7 to 11g Based on 11g documentation looks like it only works with AIX 5.3 . So my question is if we upgrade AIX level to 5.3 would existing 8.1.7 still function normally after that. Since we need some time before starting database upgrade..
Hi..
Just searching over metalink i found that 8i is Desupported on AIX 5L OS version. But it seems you are lucky enough to go on.Better as Yingkuan suggested make a test on DEV server of 8i.
For certification matrices ypu can look from [http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html]

Oracle 8.1.7 and AIX 5.3
Is Oracle 8.1.7 with AIX 5.3 is supported?
Where can I find the information?
Thank you.8.1.7 is really old and out of date.
I don't think you will get any support from Oracle - but follow up in Metalink for an authoritative answer.
If you get no satisfaction elsewhere and want to risk your system on 5.3, I think AIX 5.3 has a 5.2 compatibility mode. -

Daylight savings effect - Oracle AS 10g r2 on AIX
Hello,
Could someone please list the effects of daylight savings on Oracle AS 10g r2 on AIX. I wasn't able to find any documentation on the web that helps. If anyone has a link to online documentation on this topic, it would be great if you can share it.
Thank you,

Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX
Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
appreciated.
TIA
Chris aka BoobBooHello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
> RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.

May I ask a question...
My environment: SAP run on the AIX. may I use the Oracle RAC by NFS in AIX for Oracle HA ...?Hi Dennie,
As far as I read from the development update SAP on Oracle, SAP supports NAS NSF with RAC 11.2 on all Unix platforms. Check the link http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d053aa41-75b6-2d10-95b5-9a961a5ae750?quicklink=ora&overridelayout=true
Check the statement in the note "1416773 - Oracle Direct NFS", below;
Advantages of Oracle Direct NFS :
Since NFS is a shared file system, you can also use this
implementation for Real Application Clusters (RACs). Oracle Direct NFS
recognizes if an instance is part of an RAC installation.

Oracle 9i installation error on AIX 4.3
Hi Dears,
i am trying to install oracle 9.0.1 on iBM-AIX 4.3.but when i run runInstaller script i got the follwonig below error
error in writting to directory /tmp/Oinstall. please ensure that this directory is writable and has alleast 25MB of disk space.Installation can't continue
then i check the size of /tmp directory like #df -k /tmp
it showing 2GB, and i have given the permision to /tmp directory #chmod 777 /tmp
then i run the runInstaller again i got the same error.please any one has idea bout that.quick respose will be higly appreciated.thanks a lot in advance.I think your problem could be caused by the fact that you have a staging area, which was created with the root user. Dear All,
My Oracle 9201 database on sun 5.8 migration to 10.2.0.5 on AIX 6.1
Step 1
Source on Oracle 9201 database on sun 5.8 I exported the database
exp system/**** FULL=y FILE=exp_full.dmp STATISTICS=NONE LOG=exp_full.log
Q1 Is this command is correct or do i need to add any other parameters ?
Step 2
Target on AIX 6.1
1) Installer 10g patch set etc and created the database using dbca
2) Created all the tables spaces same as Source database
Q1
To Import the database using this command or do i need to some
imp system/***** FULL=y FILE=exp_full.dmp LOG=imp_full.log IGNORE=y
Do I need to create all the users and or What else i need do before i need to run imp
Pls List of the things which i need to create before i run imp
Best RegardsBefore importing data to new server you need to take care of following point.
1. Create all the tablespace present as on production database on the new database server and size should be 10-15% more as on production
2.create all the user present on production on the new database with their default tablespace.
3. grant all the privilages to the user as on production on the new database.
4. Then import the data using following command
imp user/password file=file.dmp log=logfile.log full=y feedback=1000 -
Cant install oracle 8.1.7 on aix 4.3.3
because of internal issues, i have used my pc to copy the 2 install
cd's onto a unix box to try and install from there.
the 2 disks are on the unix box and i can read all the files.
i run runinstaller from the disk1 directory and it asks if i have run 'rootpre.sh' which i answer yes.
it changes directory to install/aix and then
it runs ./runInstaller $* &
then it says the following
$ The Java RunTime Environment was not found at bin/jre. Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run.
Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.1.8 or higher and try again.
now i am not sure of the context. there is no relative directory bin with jre there. i do a which and i can see the jre /usr/bin/jre ( which is 1.1.8 ).
what am i missing here?
i assume i am missing a variable or something..
the docs seem to say the only required setting is DISPLAY and PATH
my PATH is /usr/bin:/etc:/usr/sbin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb:/usr/bin/X11:/sbin
any ideas?

thanksHi, Guys:
I got the same problem. I couldn't install Oracle 8.1.7 on my
new system with P4 1.5G and Windows 2000. I downloaded Windows
service pack 2 and updated my OS. It still didn't work. It is
obvious that the problem is in Oracle 8.1.7. It can not work
with P4. The Universal Installer of Oracle couldn't run under
the P4 envirnment. Some expert introduced workaround. It was not
working for everyone. So who can solve this problem or who can
tell me whether Oracle has created patch to fix this up? By the
way, can Oracle 9i work with P4 and windows 2000? Thanks. -
Raw device for oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.3
Hi there,
I am trying to use a raw device on AIX 4.3.3 for ORACLE 8.1.7.
I have created a raw device /dev/or_system
brw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 54, 1 Mar 04 10:44 or_system
but it is not possible to create a datafile on it :
SVRMGR> create database "GLM"
maxinstances 8
character set "WE8ISO8859P1"
datafile '/dev/or_system' size 150M REUSE
logfile
GROUP 1 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log1.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 2 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log2.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 3 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log3.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 4 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log4.ora') size 100M;
create database "GLM"
ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-01519: error while processing file '?/rdbms/admin/sql.bsq' near line 407
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01119: error in creating database file '/dev/or_system'
ORA-27038: skgfrcre: file exists
SVRMGR>
The ORA-27028 in exact this situation was reported as a bug in prior ORACLE Versions 8.0.4/ 8.0.5 and had
the bug no. 690228.
But we use as mentioned 8.1.7.
What do I do wrong?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you
GerhardEach raw device you create is used as a single data file.
Eg mklv -y 'myfile' <vgname> <number of logical partitians>
Will have two special files associated with them /dev/rmyfile and /dev/myfile. The number of logical partitians will be the size of your datafile subtract 1 meg for overhead.
So, if you were addding the above raw volume to a tablespace, and the lp size was 32 meg, you would
create tabelspace tsname datafile '/dev/rmyfile' size 31 m;
Note the use of rmyfile not myfile. -

Can anybody tell me what is wrong with it?This is the same problem that we have encountered installing 8.1.7 clients on AIX 4.3.3 and 5.2. However I did successfully install it on one AIX 4.3.3 machine. Comparing the oracle logs there are no differences in the successful and unsuccessful installs until the point netasst hangs.
