Oracle 8 tns-listener security

Hi list,
premise that an upgrade to a newer Oracle version is recommended... I noticed setting a tns-listener password in Oracle 8.1.7* ("SECURITY=ON"), the SIDs are anyway enumerable (via "Command=status").
According to you, is firewall filtering the only possible solution?
As for "Oracle8 tns security" I did not find information on google. For Oracle 9 is different.
Thanks in advance,
Al

According to "documentation in internet", with "SECURITY=ON", the password is configured (for example http://www.integrigy.com/files/Integrigy_Oracle_Listener_TNS_Security.pdf).
I hope I am wrong :)Having no knowledge of how the cited tools work, I'll have to defer ...

sridharWhy are you reviving a thread that has been dormant for 18 months and had nothing that looked at all like your problem?
    Anyway ...
First, Is your client (from which you are running sqlplus) on the same machine as the database? If not, it will never connect as 'localhost' is a non-routable address.
Second, which version of windows is your database on?
Third, we see what your listener and tnsnames files look like, but that's not the whole story. Show us the results of :
c:> lsnrctl status(Use copy and paste to show us the full command and response from a command prompt)
Fourth, read my standard explanation and see if it leads you to any clues.
    =================================
    A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    larry =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
    What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

  • Oracle 8i TNS Listener crashes

    After a fresh install of Oracle 8i on a NT4 Server SP5, when I
got to to test the net names server the Oracle TNS Listener
crashes. Anyone experience similar problems? Is there a
solution? Is there a place on OTN where bugs can be reported

I will certainly not use Oracle 8i if there are errors such as
    these.

Thanks for the reply. I figured that since nobody else has said
something similar in these threads that it must be something I
was doing wrong. I notice that SP5 is not in MS Technet packs
sent out monthly, it has been available for download for 3
months or so now, obviously something is wrong with it.
    Thanks for the tip.
Praying that I did backup my files...

  • TNS Listener Security

    Hi all,
Our E-Business Suite support is fully outsourced. We have 3 Administrators at the outsourced company who are the ONLY ones with root access,ORACLE_HOME owners and these 3 are the only ones in the DBA group. Because of this limited number admins (the 3 of them) they claim they dont need a TNS Listener password, tns listener admin restrictions switched on or tns listener logging enabled. Does this sound reasonable.

If a password is not set on the listener, anyone who knows hostname and port number has full control over the listener. Hence, the Listener files can be compromised or corrupted or even a Denial of Service Attack can be launched against the system. In this type of attack, the attacker is able to stop the listener, set a listener password so that the listener cannot be started without a password, although the DBA simply has to edit the file and remove the password line.
My personal recommendation is, Continue to have adequate password controls for access to LISTNER. The DBA should ensure that the password is encrypted.

  • Oracle 10g tns listener

i have installed 10g database on the same server on which 9i already exists. i did it on two machines and on comp1 everything is going well, but on comp2 (which is main server in our company) i can't connect to database i created during the 10g installation. when i try to run enterprise manager console, i'm asked for host and/or database username and password, and when i enter these things i still can not run EM. after few attempts i figure it out that there might be a problem with listeners (i found it on net) and i found out that on comp1, with which i have no problem, oracle 10g listener is running (control panel->admin tools->services), but on comp2 9i listener is running, and there is no 10g listener listed in services at all, so this could be the problem which i don't know how to solve. what should i do to register or do anything else, to have 10g listener listed in services to make it run???? if i'm wrong about listeners, tell me some other ideas and solutions to work it out.
thanks a lot to anyone willing to help !

    Hi
Stop and disable the 9i listener service and to create a 10g listener with the Net Configuration Assistant (Start -> Programs -> Oracle 10 Home -> Configuration and Migration Tools -> Net Configuration Assistant). As you saw on the other macine, the 10g listener will register the 9i and the 10g databases.

with regrads to the below thread which mostly talks about Oracle Security Alert for CVE-2012-1675 "TNS Listener Poison Attack"....i just wanted to find out if this effect DB that are externally or internally....meaning 95% of our DB are in network(internally) behind our firewall....and rest of the 5% are outside our firewall facing the world wide web....so does this apply to both of just one ?The attack is on the Listener itself - so if you want to prevent this attack, you need to secure that Listener, irrespective of its location.
IMO, mandatory if you expose your Listener to an unsecured or public network (e.g. internet).
As for Listeners running on your internal network - if this attack is used, securing your Listeners mean very little IMO. Because your internal network already needs to be compromised in order for the attack to occur. Which means you have far more serious problems then someone attacking your Listeners.

  • Oracle TNS Listener password

Where do I specify the tns listener password in CF MX. I have
added a password to the oracle TNS listener service. I need to get
MX to pass this password to the oracle server. Is there a place to
    do this.
    cfk

Here is what I was given from our security group here at
    USDOJ:
    We are using 9i,
    Server Product ColdFusion MX
    Version 7,0,2,142559
    Edition Enterprise
    Serial Number
    Operating System Windows 2003
    OS Version 5.2
    Description:
A Oracle TNS Listener has been detected on the host with
    login security disabled (SECURITY=OFF).
    Observation:
Oracle is an enterprise level database which is available on
    many different platforms.
A configuration vulnerability exists within the Oracle TNS
Listener which allows remote unauthenticated access. The TNS
Listener accepts a clients request and establishes a TNS
(Transparent Network Substrate) data connection between the client
and the service. A TNS connection allows clients and servers to
communicate over a network via a common API, regardless of the
network protocol used on either end (TCP/IP, IPX, etc). A default
installation of the TNS listens on TCP port 1521.
    Vulnerable Systems:
    Oracle 8i
    Oracle 9i
    Recommendation:
It is recommended to only allow certain IP's or subnet ranges
to access the TNS listener. This can be done by adding a rule in
the firewall. We also recommend that you enable a password for the
    TNS listener within Oracle

    Hi,
a different point: make sure the (host = ) part of your ADDRESS_LIST is correct, it seems the listener tries to bind to a host/port combination that does not exist. Don't use localhost there or nobody will be able to connect to the database which is probably not what you what.

  • TNS Listener -ORA-12514 error following database shutdown - Oracle 11g

    Hi
I have hit a problem with my oracle development database.
When in sqlplus I executed the shutdown command, but nothing happened for several minutes and it was just hanging. No messages were displayed to the screen. The only thing was to close the command window. When I open sqlplus again and enter in the user name password as sysdba I am getting ORA 12514 TNS Listener could not resolve service in descriptor. This is odd as I could log on before and use the database. So I thought that the services were still shutting down I waited, and using the Windows snap on tool for Oracle 11g, I restarted the services on the database, but this has had no effect.
Even using EM made no difference because I couldn't log on to perform a startup or recovery.
So, please does anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks

open Command Window & do EXACTLY as below; line for line
    sqlplus
    / as sysdba
    shutdown abort
    startup
    exit
COPY command & results from above then PASTE all back here

  • ORA-12505 on Oracle Database 10g Express Edition: TNS:listene

    Hi all,
I am aware that there has been several posts about this subject but i still cant seem to be able to resolve my problem.
I am new to this but I did read through all information I could find and nothing helps.
I am trying to connect to oracle database from sqldeveloper and i am getting that error.
I am just following the tutorials on the net and they simply say to connect using SID: orcl but that does not seem to work for me.
Can someone please explain to me how to find out how to change the paths (i suspect the problem lies there) so i can connect?
    Natalia

Oracle XE SID is ... XE and not orcl.
    Did you also check:
    $ oerr ora 12505
12505, 00000, "TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor"
// *Cause:  The listener received a request to establish a connection to a
// database or other service. The connect descriptor received by the listener
// specified a SID for an instance (usually a database instance) that either
// has not yet dynamically registered with the listener or has not been
// statically configured for the listener. This may be a temporary condition
// such as after the listener has started, but before the database instance
// has registered with the listener.
    // *Action:
//  - Wait a moment and try to connect a second time.
//  - Check which instances are currently known by the listener by executing:
    //    lsnrctl services <listener name>
//  - Check that the SID parameter in the connect descriptor specifies
//    an instance known by the listener.
//  - Check for an event in the listener.log file.

  • ORA-12505 on Oracle Database 10g Express Edition: TNS:listener

In Developer3, trying to connect to Oracle Database 10g Express Edition give me:
Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12505 TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor
    Vendor code 12505
    Edited by: 873444 on Jul 22, 2011 3:23 AM

SID given in connect descriptorSo what is the SID you're asking for ... the client in use may not know the XE tnsalias, especially if the client is not running in the same ORACLE_HOME as the database.
The client needs to know how to get to the database- a `tnsping xe` reveals the path to the current ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/sqlnet.ora file for your environment but that may not be the same ORACLE_HOME used by "developer 3".

  • TNS listener problem when migrating access app to oracle

I am migrating an access 2000 DB and application to oracle 8i. I have done this successfully on my test machine many times. I am working on the customers machine, and the problem is when I go to migrate the access application, it will not connect to oracle b/c of the TNS listener. The workbench tool ask for a username, pwd, and ODBC driver, but there is no place to put the oracle service name. I ran into this problem at home and I appended the service name onto the password with the '@' symbol, which works for oracle anyway. Like this, 'pwd@sname'. It worked at home, but I keep getting an error here that tns could not resolve service name. When migrating the data, there was a field to put the service name in, but not for migrating the application. I have tried variations in the ODBC driver also, but with no luck. Any other ideas?

    Hello,
Is it possible that odbc driver is nor properly installed? If so you may have to re-instlal the odbc driver. If not try out the following steps:
    * Go to DataSources [On win2k: start -> settings ->control panel ->Adminsitrative tools -> Data Sources (ODBC)]
    * Click Add for the user DSN [say "testDSN"], and select oracle driver here [check if you have oracle 8 driver, if not you may want to install one]
    * In the "Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration" window, give you your oracle databse connection details, click the "Test Connection button", it will ask for username and password, give system's username and password
    * Use this DSN [testDSN] name in the migration work bench
    Thank you and kind regards,

  • Setting an Oracle TNS Listener password

Im trying to enable a TNS Listener password on a database that I am monitoring through UNIX.
I have tried set current_listener, but lsnrctl only recognizes the listener on my machine.
Do I have to find the machine (remotely or not) where the listener is configured?
Each time I try, I get TNS-01101 error : could not service name
(I have already doen this successfully on my own machine, but I have to do the same for one of the databases in our firm)
    Thanks.

This error means that the service name could not be resolved by name-lookup. Verify the listener.ora is properly configured, check the name and address defined either in listener.ora or in the tnsnames.ora file.
I suggest you this reference Configuring Password Listener Authentication
