Oracle 8i,9i on Athlon 1,2GHz with Win2000

Question

Hi there.
I tried to install Oracle 8i on an Athlon 1,2GHz-CPU using
Win2000. As I failed - during the DB-Configuration Assistant ->
ORA 03113(end of file on communication channel) - I was
suggested to try Oracle 9i (As I know, there is a known bug on
Oracle 8i and P4, and there is a published work around). But
Oracle 9i is not working either (ORA 01041 Internal Error:
hostdef extension doesn't exist) when using the DB-Configuration
Assistant.
So my question:
Is there a known problem with Oracle (8i,9i - I'd prefer to use
9i) and an Athlon 1,2 GHz-CPU using Win 2000 SP2? If there is a
problem: Does a work around or a patch exist?

After some troubles in October 2001 I installed my OS again, without any security patches, without virus shield, only the OS (Win 2000) and afterwards I was able to setup an Oracle 9i database using the wizard.
As I had to set up my computer again in Feb of this year, the same problem occured. I tried the work around, which was posted by Stephen Fenwick as a reply on my posting, and I found a relationship between being connected to the network and working offline. When I disconnected my computer from the network, everything was working fine! Connecting again caused the error. After some houres of anger I gave up and installed the OS again - only the OS, without security patches and WITHOUT Internet Explorer 5.5! At the first time I installed the new version of the browser first. And now everything works ok!
Results:
Installing an Oracle database using the installation wizard on a stand alone Windows PC is no problem.
Doing the same thing on a PC that is connected to a LAN, you have to follow this steps:
1. Install the OS - without anything else!
2. Install Oracle software and setup the database (I don't know why, but sometimes the TNSNAMES.ORA file is not created automatically and the LISTENER.ORA file is not completed)
3. Install security patches, newer version of IE, ...
