Oracle 8i client against 9i server

Hello, we use a rather thick client to access an Oracle database. Both client and server is 8i. We are now planning to upgrade the server (running on Linux) to 9i (rel 1). Do we need to replace all 8i clients on the laptops (microsoft) (100+) to 9i clients?? Or is the 8i client certified to run against a 9i database??

Net8 should be compatible "over the wire" with other versions of Net, check with Oracle to be sure.
What you should worry about is the 3rd party software compatibility with Oracle Client (this controls if you can upgrade/change the clients Oracle Client software). Perhaps they haven't certified their software with 9i?

  • ODBC for Oracle 9i client on Presentation Server 4.5

Does anyone have an Oracle 9i ODBC driver or something that will work for an app that is Oracle 9.1 on presentation server 4.5? The application loads but tnsping returns ORA-12504 error.
Tnsnames is same tnsnames file we use on Presentation 4.0 for same app. Don't know how to fix. Vendor says not supported, boss says too bad make it work.
I can't find 9.1 drivers on Oracle site. If someone has them or has a solution please reply to this post.
    Thanks

Hi, I appreciate your reply. Let me explain. We use a program called Centricity EMR formerly known as Logician. The program is bundled into an Oracle database. I did get the version wrong. Here is from the About in the program: Logician 5.6.8_1 (125) / DB 5.6.8_1
    E&M Advisor 5, 4, 1, 7
    Medispan MDDB database 2007.12
    Oracle9i Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
Next item is Presentation Server is a version of Citrix. We currently are in production on Presentation Server 4.0. We want to rollout into a new Citrix farm that is Presentation 4.5. I don't know if you are familiar with Citrix or not. At any rate we load a Logician client to the server and publish it so users can get to it from their thin client (citrix) devices.
The Oracle Home lives on the Oracle database server not on the Citrix servers. We only have one Home per Oracle server.
I don't do a command line tnsping, I have a utility that comes with Logician to check Oracle Server connectivity.
It does the same thing as if I typed tnsping <database name>.
Here is our sqlnet.ora (we don't modify this ever, it is already configured)
    # SQLNET.ORA Network Configuration File: d:\oracle\ora92\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN= WORLD
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, ONAMES, HOSTNAME)
Here is tnsnames.ora (we can modify the part in front of the .WORLD and the ip address)
    <databasename>.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = TCP.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = <ipaddress>)
    (PORT = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORA7)
    # (SDU=8192)
I think that is all you asked for. Like I said the Logician client runs just fine in Presentation 4.0. On 4.5 I can't connect to the Oracle but it has to be something simple I can change to make it work. The reason why I think it is ODBC is because Presentation server has a 32-bit ODBC and a 64-bit ODBC. You can't see the service in 64-bit but you can in 32-bit. I just can't figure out how to trick it to pull from 32-bit.
Thanks so much, hope you can help

  • Oracle 11g client against Oracle 10.2.0.3

    Hello
    OS : Solaris 10 : Two servers S1 & S2
    S1 - Oracle 10.2.0.3
    S2 - Oracle client 11G
From S2, my application is communicate with Oracle DB on S1.
Would like to confirm, if it is safe to use Oracle client 11G against 10.2.0.3 DB or should I install 10G version of client only.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Yes it is safe to use as you are using a higher end client with a lower end db. This is right for the config of the OP, but not in all cases.

  • Installing an Oracle Database client on Application Server

    Hi all
I have posted before but thought I'd clean up my original question and repost - apologies but I'm desperate for help here.
I have a problem using Oracle Wallet with Application Server and Developer Suite 10g Rel 2 Software Update 10.1.2.3.0 on Windows 2003. The problem arises because the database which ships with this version of Application Server is 10.1.0.5. This database version is not compatible with Oracle Wallet external passwords eg sqlplus /@MY_WALLET_NAME.
So...to get around this I'm looking at putting the 10.2 database client on which will allow me to use sqlplus with the wallet.
    My questions is:
Does anyone have any advice for retaining existing Application Server functionality (we use Discoverer, Forms and Reports (RWCLIENT)) with a new Oracle 10.2 home on the server?
I will put on the client so would expect if I copy across the tnsnames & sqlnet ora, the connectivity is all backward compatible. SQL*Plus is obviously backward compatible. I'm not familiar with Application Server so am looking for guidance on any configurations I might need to change to make sure they pick up the right Oracle Home. For example, with the new Oracle Home at the start of the %PATH%, will RWCLIENT work as normal?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Nothing special. Oracle Client installation is very simple.

  • Oracle 11g Client for Windows Server 2008 Relase2 Operating Stystem

    Hi,
I am having a server with Operating System as Windows Server 2008 R2 version 64 - bit.
I am using SSRS 2008 which is 64 bit, for retreiving the data from Oracle (which is 11g - 32 bit), I am unable to create data source for Oracle.
I had installed ODAC Components of Oracle 11.1.0.7.20 on the server, but still I am getting the following error:
"The 'OraOLEDB.Oracle.1' provider is not registered on the local machine."
Does any one know how to install Oracle Client 11g on Windows Server 2008 R2 Operating system?

    Helios,
It is wonderful that you are polite and encouraging to new people.
While you are responding, could you explicitly direct people to use the correct forum. This has at least 2 benefits:
    1) Ensures that the person gets the widest possible amount of assistance;
    2) Ensures that the rest of us do not need to waste time on improperly placed questions.
I suggest 'explicitly' since some people do not get the hint, and keep returning to the original thread.
This thread belongs in 'Database - General' or 'Database - Install'.

  • Using Oracle 9i Client and 10g Server on the same box

    Hi,
All our applications are compiled using oracle 9i and the proc compiler for oracle 9i.
However we run the applications against a 10g database which has oracle9i and 10g co-hosted on the same both. We achieve this by using the oracle 9 libclntsh.so shared library which uses shared memory (I assume) rather than having a listener and tnsnames.ora entry.
My question is, is it support by oracle.
    Thanks,
    Iain

You can achieve this by install them into different ORACLE_HOME

  • What is the matter in using guids in a smart client against server scenario

I am developing an application which consists in a smart client against a Server -with oracle db-. We use typed datasets to manage data between them. Our first aproach is using autonumeric, but we have found lot of issues: what happends when the pk comes back changed to the client? and a few more.
I think guids were invented for this scenario, but i would want to know your opinion about them, specially performance issues.
    Thanks in advance.

    hi,
A benefit of using OID for names resolution is that it allows you to centralize net8 naming (i.e., tnsnames) information in the same place (OID) where other types of administrative information (about users, enterprise groups, enterprise roles, etc) gets stored. If you are more comfortable using tnsnames.ora files for net8 naming, that is perfectly fine!
An important reason that Oracle had for providing Net8 naming functionality in OID is that the legacy 'Oracle Names' functionality of Oracle 7 will eventually be desupported. This is discussed in metalink Note #135696.1 on http://metalink.oracle.com .
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to connect to 11i client to 11i server through OCI calls

    Hello All,
We have a C++ application which uses oci calls to connect to Oracle database. The application is built with 9i libraries. When we connect we try 11i client and 11i server combination, we are not able to connect to the db. We are able to connect to the db via sqlplus but not via our application.
The same application works fine when we use Oracle 9i client and 10gR2 server. What is the change from 9i to 11i that is causing this problem. Do I need to rebuild the product with 11i headers and libraries?
The error message in our log file is: oci.so: invalid mode for dlopen(): Invalid argument

  • Running Oracle 9i client code against an Oracle 10g install on PC

On Unix I am able to run Oracle 9i client code against an Oracle 10g install by setting ORACLE_HOME to the Oracle 10g install location and then creating a symbolic link (example: ln -fs libclntsh.so.10.1 libclntsh.so.9.0).
On PC (in particular XP SP2) I want to do something similar without using "junctions" or "junction points". Is there a way to set an environment variable or ini file to have my 9i client code point to the right libraries? I keep getting an error saying that my client code will not run due to "orasql9.dll" not being found. The "orasql10.dll" is installed on my machine.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Even your application built on 9i, doesn't mean it will not work with 10g database. From what I can see, running 9i executable under 10g installation to create mixed blood breed will do more harm than good. Not only it's not supported but also the outcome is unpredictable.

  • Oracle 8.1.7.3 client on Windows Server 2008 64bit

    Hi all!
I'm a newbie to Oracle and this forum, so please be gentle...:)
I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7.3 client on a 64bit Windows Server 2008, without success. Best result I got so far is 'installed' client and provider, but unable to run the config tools, or use the provider. I installed the same client on a 32bit version of Win Server 2008 and it worked with few minor tweaks.
Reason I'm doing this is trying to integrate an old legacy Oracle 7 database with SQL Server 2008 using linked servers.
Upgrading to a recent version is not an option.
Anyone has any guidelines? please help, this is driving me nuts!
    Thanx,
    Igor

The client is included. Download it and start the installation. It should give you an option to select 'client only'.

Que 1 : Why? Why i cannot see any Oracle in ODBC? Is it because of 64 bit?
Que 2: If i installed Oracle 9i client (64 bit), will it solve the problem?

  • Oracle 10g client not connecting to Oracle 8i server

I have oracle 8i server already installed. I downloaded Oracle 10g client recently. I installed it on one machine and trying to connect to 8i server. I used TNSnames.ora which was already present on the machine. After entering the username, password and service name in SQL plus, I got a error saying server version not suported. Does 10g client not support 8i server or am I doing something wrong ?

There is an 8.1.7.4 patchset for Windows.
If you take a look at the Instant Client forum, there are some discussions on this where one of the Oracle product managers (Mr. Jue) has chimed in. At present, only connections to 8.1.7.4 and higher are supported. It is expected that the first 10g patchset will fix this bug and allow connections to 8.1.7.0 and above databases.
