Oracle 8i or Discoverer first ?

I need to install Oracle Standard Edition 8.1.7 and Discoverer Admin Edition 4.1.37 on Windows 2000.
1/ should I first install Oracle or Discoverer ?
2/ should I install both in the same Home or in separate Homes ?
Thank you !

I'm sure your neighborhood Oracle Sales Representative can sort out all of that.

    Hi there,
Have you applied any patches to 9ias since it was first installed? We had the same problem and had to apply a couple of patches to get the portlets working.
    1. Apply the 9.0.2.53.16 one-off patch for Oracle 9iAS Discoverer which takes Discoverer up to 9.0.2.53.16. This patch appears to be password protected and you need to get someone at Oracle support to give you a password.
    2. Apply the Discoverer Portlet Provider: 9.0.2.53.00c patch (patch no. 2595444) which gives you a new discportal.xsl file that actually works. It's this second step that solves your problem but you need to do step 1 before this. This is password protected as well.
    3. As you've upgraded Disco on the server to 9.0.2.53, you'll need to upgrade Disco Admin & Desktop within your 9iDS installation using patch no. 2555265. This is because Disco 9.0.2.53 uses an upgraded EUL that Disco Admin & Desktop need to be patched to use.
This was the course of action Oracle support advised us about nine months ago. Of course they may have released a further patch to Disco that does 1 & 2 in one go, but we regularly carry out steps 1 and 2 on servers we use and we can use the Disco portlets successfully.
    Hope this helps

  • Error Running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time

    Hello,
We are having trouble running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time on certain user's machines. Here are the specifics:
The user opens Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer. The user then opens Discoverer in another Internet Explorer windows and receives the following error: Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe abnormal program termination
As a work around, I installed Firefox on those user's machines. These users run Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer and run Discoverer in FireFox. This has solved the problem in 99% of the cases. However, there is one user who is having FireFox using Discoverer freeze when running Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer.
Can anyone provide any insight on how I can solve these conflict issues so users can run Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Carlos

    Hi Michael,
I agree with you completely. It is reccommended to run 10g on a separate physical server unless you have sufficient resources to run on the same server (which even most large clients do not) Even then, I would recommend a separate server.
I should have put my comment in context :-)
a.) I was only stating that it was possible
    and
b.) whether 10g is installed on the same physical server or separate should not affect the client browser crashing issue that was posted.
I do have an install with EBS11i and Discoverer 10g on the same physical server and it works fine (this is sandbox/ TEST). Most of my large customers have 10g installed on multiple physical servers due to load balancing (capacity).
I do work for Oracle. I try to help out on the forum when I can, but it is hit or miss :-(
I would be glad to discuss anything privately.
As for the issue at hand, I can reproduce the problem and here is what is occuring.
I have EBS 11i configured with Jiniator 1.3.24
I have Discoverer 10g configured with Sun Java plugin 1.4.2_06
    1. If you launch EBS 11i apps and a form with MS IE, then the browser launches the form using Jiniator JRE 1.3.xx (whatever you have configured in AutoConfig for EBS11i)
    2. Next, the user navigates to EBS 11i SSWA and launches a Discoverer workbook.
What occurs is a child IEXPLORE.exe process is spawned from the parent IEXPLORE.exe process and Discoveer Plus is launched. The parent iexplore.exe process will be attached to the Jiniator JVM. Now if Discoverer is configured with
    a.) Sun Java Plugin or
b.)a version of Jinitiator that is a different version from what EBS 11i is configured with
then you may get this conflict.
It really is an MS IE/JRE conflict with Jinitiator and Sun Java Plugi and the way the broswers attaches to the JVM (IMHO) as this behaviour could be reproduced with other non-oracle java applets.
You can workaround the situation by:
    a. configure EBS11i and Discoverer to use the same version of Jiniator 1.3.xx
    b. educate the users to open one MS IE browser to connect to EBS11i and then open a second MS IE browser to login to EBS11i SSWA or Discoverer 10g Plus directly to launch workbooks. They need to to this by clicking on the icon and not using File >> New browser. Clicking on the icon will spawn a new parent iexplore.exe process that can attach to a second/different JVM. File >> New Window will spawan a child of the parent.
    c. As you did use two browser versions. MS IE for EBS11 connection and FireFox for Disocverer 10g connection.
I would choose optoin b, so that you can use Sun Java Plugin with Discoverer.
Open to any comments. I hope that helps you workaround the problem. The ideal solution is to have EBS 11i use/cerified with the 1.4 or 1.5 JRE. In poking around, I see there is a related post to this on one of Oracle's EBS 11i Product Managers Blog.

  • User Management in Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer Desktop

I am new to managing Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer Desktop users. In the past they have been allowed to use shared accounts with passwords that do not change. I am very much against this and think they need to change their passwords every 90 days and have individual accounts. My users do not have access to SQL or the database server itself. I do not see a way for the users to change their passwords with the Discoverer tool.
I am wondering how you manager your users?
Do you require them to change their passwords?
If so, how did you implement this?
    Thanks for your ideas.

    Hi,
This is a tricky one, because when the scheduled job runs the SSO user is not stored anywhere. You only know the database user.
The workaround must be to store the SSO user or organisation so that it is available when the scheduled job runs. However, this is not easy as the information must be stored against the batch run as two similar batch runs may have different organisations/SSO users. There are a number of ways you might do this, for example, adding the information into the batch run EUL table, changing the package which is created when the workbook is scheduled that gets run from the jobs queue so that the package sets the organisation. All the options would involve changing the supplied report batch code which probably would not be supported.
Maybe the easiest workaround is to use a custom table, and it work like this:
    1. A database logon trigger or EUL post logon trigger would check the client_identier and get the organisation.
    2. The organisation should then be stored in a database context. It is quicker than using a package variable.
    3. The EUL5_BATCH_SECURE_REP package is modified so that when the workbook is scheduled the organisation is stored in a custom table along with the batch run id or database job id.
    4. A database logon trigger on the batch repository user (which will be fired when the scheduled report runs) looks in the custom table for the batch run id or job id using the details from the current job. The current job id is available from the userenv context.
    5. The organisation is then retrieved and the database context set so that the workbook runs correctly.
I appreciate that the details are a bit sketchy but hopefully this has given you some ideas.

  • Integrating Oracle Help with Discoverer Plus

    Folks -
Has anyone tried integrating Oracle Help with Discoverer Plus. I want to add my customized help (generated in RoboHelp - Oracle) to the help in Discoverer Plus. Is this doable? I don't want to use Oracle Help exclusively unless I need to.

    Hi, Johnny.
I think you might have better luck getting your question answered on the forum for Discoverer at Discoverer
I'm not sure whether Discoverer supports extensions, but I would assume that they do in some way. Discoverer ought to provide a standard mechanism for extensions to provide help content.
    Hope this helps,

  • Unable to connect to Oracle server on the first attempt.

    Hi,
I've downloaded the Oracle Data Provider for .NET and I've installed it on my computer. Only this software, and only the client tools and there are no more Oracle products intalled on this computer.
I've developed a test application in order to take a look to these libraries but I am very dissapointed with the behaviour of the OracleConnection class, and that is because when I call the open() method for the first time it is impossible to open the connection, the application never returns from this call. If I close the application and I execute it again it takes 0.0 seconds to open the connection and If I wait about 5 or 10 minutes without querying the database, next time I try to connect it fails again showing the same behaviour that it showed in the first connection attempt.
I really don't know if I am missing some software installation or any configuration, I've tried this on two computers and the result is the same. I've looked for an answer in this forum but the only I have fount takes not sense, it says that it deppends of the user used to connect to the database.
I have to add that the database is not in the same network of the computer.
    Thanks in advance,Regards.

Thank you for your answer Alex.
I've tried both options but is hasn't solved my problem :-(
I think that I didn't explain it well, the first connection attempt doesn't take 5 minutes it never connects to the database.
    That's what I am doing.
1.-Launch the C# app using the OracleConnection.Open() method
2.-The application freezes after call the Open() method (no timeout response...)
    3.-Stop the application execution
4.-Launch the application again and it takes 2 seconds the response from the Open() method
5.-I do some querys and everything works fine
6.-Wait for 5-10 minutes without any kind of access to the database.
7.-Query the database after these minutes and after call the method Open() what I described in point 2. happens again , the application freezes.
I've tried this under Windows XP, Windows vista, in different computers and the behaviour is always the same.
The curious thing is that I've installed the SQL Developer and everything woks fine, no connection timeouts, the first connection takes only a couple of seconds.
I really don't know what's happening here and It should work fine. It is very dissapointing.

  • Oracle Forms returns the first record in the database when performing query

Once in a while when we query for a record on a form, say by first name Tom, then it returns the first record in the database. Other times it return the Tom's record. It only happens once in a while and if you close the form and reopen it and requery for Tom, then it brings Tom's record.
Does anyone know the issue what could be happening. It just happens every now and then that it's hard to reproduce.
    ORacle Forms 10GR2
    ORacle Application Server 10.1.3
    thanks

then it returns the first record in the databaseI'm not sure if i understand you correctly. Do you mean forms ignores the searc-condition you entered? I would check SYSTEM.LAST_QUERY at the moment this happens to check if the condition gets somehow lost.

  • Link to Oracle Form in Discoverer Viewer

Can we create a link in Discoverer Viewer to a transaction in Oracle. On clicking on the link the Oracle Transaction form will open.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Yes you can do this and it works quite well. You need to call fnd_run_function.get_run_function_url either from Discoverer or using you own PLSQL. You also need to check that the form you are opening has parameters defined that can be supplied to find the transaction when the form is opened.
    Hope that helps,

  • Swapping between 2 Oracle instances and Discoverer

We have this strategy of swapping between 2 Oracle instances every month to minimize downtime for our users. Our data warehouse is refreshed every month which takes about 2 to 4 days. Instance 2 is being re-loaded with next month's data, while users are currently pointing to Instance 1, loaded with current month's data. Once re-load is completed with Instance 2, users will now have to point to Instance 2. This goes on every month. How can we implement swapping, without our Discoverer users even knowing that the database had been swapped?

If you are using Discoverer on the web, every two months you can change the TNS entry for the database on all the Discoverer server machines. That way the users type the same database alias (or you can code it into the URL so they don't have to type it), and Discoverer will connect to whichever database you have defined for that alias. Since the TNSnames.ora file is not on the users' machines, you can update them as you need.
