Oracle 8i, SuSe Linux, big performance Problem

Hello,
i have a very interisting problem on SuSe Linux 7.0 (or 7.1).
Engine: Fujitsu Siemens Primargy, 4 Processors, 4 GB RAM
I want to make a hot backup.
After i set the tablespace in backup mode i make a copy of the tablespace.
On that moment goes nothing more with Oracle.
There is no input/output from/to the database. (Every select needs extremly long time)
Have anybody an idea? (I hope so)
What is the break?
Oracle or SuSe Linux? (Any other jobs do the computer all right, very quick)
Bye and thanks
Michael

Hello,
i forgot to give a very important detail:
The load average goes from 0.4 up thru 5.X (at that moment i must kill the job)
sorry that i don't write it in the main letter.
Bye and thanks for every hint.

  • Can't install Oracle on SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro

    Hi,
    i try since three weeks to install Oracle 9.2 Release 2. My last Problem was,
    that i didn't know how to log in as the created Oracle User. This Problem is solved.
    But when i install Oracle as the Oracle User and try to configure the Administrator
    Group, i get the error, that i don't have the specific permission to change that,
    so i gave the Oracle User all Rights about every directory (chown oracle:dba / ).
    After that the Installation proceed without any problem, but after the Installation,
    the Database Configuration Assistant failed to install and two other Assistants, too.
    So, i don't know where there problem is. I fulfilled every pre-installation Task, but
    it still isn't possible for me, to install Oracle 9.2 on a SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional
    System.
    If anyone could help me along this Installation, i would be very thankful.
    Thanks a lot
    Daniel

    But when i don't give the oracle user all rights, it isn't possible to proceed with theinstallation
    But if you give that rights then it's a security hole. According to your words I guess you have similar enviroment settings:
    ORACLE_BASE=/
    ORACLE_HOME=/<directory_name>
    Why you not installing on deeper directory such as /opt or some your own directory? For example
    ORACLE_BASE=/myoracledir
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/<directory_name>
    Then chown -R oracle:dba /myoracledir.
    Then oracle will be owner just for /myoracle directory and all its subdirectories.
    i just could look at the error details, but they didn't described the erroranyway.
    That's not so true. Error log you could find in /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-MM-DD_HH_MI_SS..

    - Have a look at metalink note 3951017.8 for a possible fix

    - Try running the query with PARALLEL hint. This would mean doing disk I/O instead of buffer & interconnect I/O.

  • How to automatically startup Oracle on SUSE Linux

    I have Oracle 11g installed on a server running SUSE Linux 11. I followed the official Oracle instructions to try to set up Oracle for automatic startup.
    My /etc/oratab file contains the following:
    sidname:/opt/oracle/product/11gR2/db:Y
    I created a /etc/init.d/dbora file, which contains the following:
    #! /bin/sh  -x
    # Change the value of ORACLE_HOME to specify the correct Oracle home
    # directory for your installation.
    ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/product/11gR2/db
    # Change the value of ORACLE to the login name of the
    # oracle owner at your site.
    ORACLE=oracle
    PATH=${PATH}:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    HOST=`hostname`
    PLATFORM=`uname`
    export ORACLE_HOME PATH
    if [ ! "$2" = "ORA_DB" ] ; then
       if [ "$PLATFORM" = "HP-UX" ] ; then
          remsh $HOST -l $ORACLE -n "$0 $1 ORA_DB"
          exit
       else
          rsh $HOST -l $ORACLE  $0 $1 ORA_DB
          if [ "$PLATFORM" = "Linux" ] ; then
              touch /var/lock/subsys/dbora
          fi
          exit
       fi
    fi
    case $1 in
    'start')
            $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart $ORACLE_HOME &
    'stop')
            $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbshut $ORACLE_HOME &
            echo "usage: $0 {start|stop}"
            exit
    esac
    exit
    Then I ran the following commands:
    chgrp dba /etc/init.d/dbora
    chmod 750 /etc/init.d/dbora
    ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K01dbora
    ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S99dbora
    ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99dbora
    shutdown -r now
    After restarting, Oracle was not running:
    server:~ # ps -fea | grep ora

    server:~ # ps -fea | grep lsnr
    root      4493  4333  0 21:19 pts/1    00:00:00 grep lsnr
    Oracle runs fine after I start the instance (by logging into sqlplus as "sys as sysdba" and issuing the "startup" command) and listener. But it won't start up automatically after restarting the server. Why is that?

    I got it working.  I had to change the dbora file to look like this:
    #! /bin/sh  -x
    # Change the value of ORACLE_HOME to specify the correct Oracle home
    # directory for your installation.
    ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/product/11gR2/db
    # Change the value of ORACLE to the login name of the
    # oracle owner at your site.
    ORACLE=oracle
    PATH=${PATH}:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    export ORACLE_HOME PATH
    touch /var/lock/subsys/dbora
    case $1 in
    'start')
            su - $ORACLE $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart $ORACLE_HOME &
    'stop')
            su - $ORACLE $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbshut $ORACLE_HOME &
            echo "usage: $0 {start|stop}"
            exit
    esac
    exit
    Then I had to delete the listener.log and startup.log files in $ORACLE_HOME because they were incorrectly owned by root.

  • Report with entity beans - BIG performance problem

    I have several EJBs (CMP entity beans).
    I need to build a report using linked EJBs and show this report
    to a user (so, updates are not needed - report is only for web page demonstration).
    the problem is: such report is generated too slow.
    I have ~100 records in table 'TestResult' and ~500 records in table 'TestObject'.
    these tables are linked like this:
    one testobject <--> many testresults
    for each testresult I need to show a line with some info which should be retrieved
    from bound EJBs (e.g. testresult-testobject-assigneduser-prioritylevel)
    how to optimize such report generation?
    I have heard something about session beans with Value Objects.
    do I need to use such session beans here?
    what is a general solution for generating reports using linked EJBs?
    I tried to solve the problem by using DB View, but it didn't help.
    I have used 'TestResultView' - info is retrieved fast enough from this view
    (several msecs), but displaying this info is still very costly.
    please, help!
    Oracle 8.1.7,
    WebLogic 6.1

    Hi,
    because I have checked the time required to
    1) retrieve EJBS (several msec)Let me share some of my views with you.Once you retrieve the EJBS ie ie the collection of remote interface from the finder method the container is firing single "select " query and gets all the primary keys back.
    2) cycle through it - get fields and display them
    (~4000 msec)Now the cycle of getting the value you are getting the bean from the PooledState to ready state which will get the fields by firing the "select" query (ejbload()). Now in the instance you are invoking the multiple methods and at the end it will remain there in ready till you call the remove which u are not doing so the time out will bring it back to the pooledstate.
    And if you are calling the bean very frequently then all the instances will go to the ready state and the activation & passivation will start developing ......
    So at the end when the bean moves back to the pooled state after timeout the ejbStore() fires the "update " query!!!!
    Let us consider the activation/passivation not appearing for simple understanding !!!!!!!!
    So for each iteration you are firing 2 queries to the database.So if you have 500 records then the queries generatted will be 1(select from finder)+2(1 by select(ejbload)+1 by update(ejbStore))*500. So the flow is calling 1001 queries ...Thus quering about 1000 queries will definetly take some time...
    So what is the solution????
    Any way you dont require to fire the update query as you are just viewing the data...So u can stop calling the ejbStore().
    Hence you queries will drop to half.Now how we can do this is by using the BMP.....
    The other solution is using the Sessionbean and store the data all 500 records in the Object which can be called across the n/w. This object should implements the Serializable interface and this tech is the Transfer Object feature.....
    Hope you find this useful..
    regards
    Vicky

    Oracle ias9i is certified with Oracle Server 8.1.6 and 8.1.7. When installed on the same machine, then you have to install Oracle Server first in it's own ORACLE_HOME, shut down all services after installation, and install ias9i in it's separate ORACLE_HOME. As you shut down all services of the database installation (and have no datbase up at installation time of ias9i), you have to start all database related parts of ias9i installation after the software install: bring up database, define tnsname for it in ias-home and start Portal Configuration Assistant. When you install ias9i, an Oracle Server 8.1.7 is installed in the same ORACLE_HOME as ias9i for the Database Cache feature only. It is not recommended to use that Installation for production databases. These hints are for NT-platform, i don't think there are differences in UNIX.

    When I hit the ./runInstaller it just bombs out with
    segmentation fault at line 34. It looks like the runInstaller

    Is Suse using Glibc 2.1? Oracle requires glibc 2.1 and a seg

    Either install glibc 2.1 on your machine, or move to a distro

  • Oracle guids little endian, big endian problem

    hello every one,
    I am having an strange issue. I am developing a .net app against an Oracle DB. Well, when I insert a guid into a raw oracle changes the order of the byte array.
    In VB.net I see (with all the representations of guids, with or without {,- or whatever):
    ac6d5c4f-542e-4fc8-b8b6-f53821811be3
    In Oracle I see (tested with toad and sql tools):
    4F5C6DAC2E54C84FB8B6F53821811BE3
    It goes ok with the rightests numbers but fails the the leftests.
    Any suggestion?

    I have to admit that I get the meaning of big/little endian confused.
    As JosAH says; Big endian means the big end is first,
    NOT that the big value is at the end.And I have to admit that I find that whole big/little-endian jargon quite confusing
    too, I mean the most significant byte is stored at the lowest address and we
    call it big-endian ... If the number is stored 'backwards' we call it little endian.
    In the old days when computers were made of wood and ran on steam, we
    used to call it 'low-byte-first' and 'high-byte-first'. Sigh ... those were the days ;-)
    kind regards,
    Jos

    You can't expect miracles.  With over a million entries in your itab any select is going to take a bit of time. Do you really need all these records in the itab?  How many records is the select bringing back?  I'm assuming that you have got and are using indexes on your ZEEDMT_ZMON table.
    In this situation, I'd first of all try to think of another way of running the query and restricting the amount of data, but if this were not possible I'd just run it in the background and accept that it is going to take a long time.

  • Problems with sun studio 12 in suse linux 11

    Hi.
    I installed Sun Studio 12 suse linux with no problems. However, the debugging modules (DBX) are not working any more. When I started Sun Studio, it gave a message about modules that could not be loaded in tha moment. I did not pay attention. But I noticed that all debugging options were disabled.
    Using the module manager, I saw the DBX module was not checked, and I could not change it. I was marked with a red X. So I thought to reinstall the application. However, the uninstall utility doesn't work either.
    According with the documentation, running ./uninstaller does it, but I get the following error message instead
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12/class
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class
    at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:200)

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:319)
    I tried to uninstall manually, and then execute installer, by using first the software manager in linux and deleting the producregistry file manually. It worked because I executed the installer. However, in Sun Studio IDE, debugging options are still not available despite I "reinstalled" the application. I checked the log files and they say the file uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class could not be written.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any other way to repair Sun Studio? What could be the possible for this module to stop working?
    2. Does anyone have an idea of why the installer cannot write the uninstaller class?
    I found that perhaps problems regarding Java / Netbeans versions could be the problem, but the ones I have installed are those packages that were installed along with Sun Studio, and both are valid.
    Thank you very much.

    Perhaps you can simply delete the Sun Studio 12 installation tree, because it will not work on SUSE Linux 11.
    This OS is not supported, so any problems you see with SS12 on SUSE 11 will not be fixed.
    But we have a newer version, that should work better.
    You can try to download and install Sun Studio Express 2008/11 (extract pre-installed image from tar.bz2 file).
    Here is a pointer to the web page:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/express
    All you need is to provide a email address, and press "Download Now" button.
    You will see a page, that gives you 2 options to download Sun Studio Express 2008/11.
    Use "Option 2": Download Tarfile Installer

    Thanks.

    Hi
    I am using Oracle With SuSE for last 2 years .I have seen the following advantages
    SuSe have a very good Oracle on SuSE Linux forum which have lot of participants
    some very useful RPMs for automatic startup and shutdown and for setting kernel parameters during startup.
    Installation was always easy and no crashes at all .
    Currently I am running SLES8 and oracle 9iR2 (database and apps server ) with Async-IO
    The only problem I found was hyperthreading CPUs but that may generic to all distributions
    HTH
    Santhosh
