Oracle 9i and clipper database

Hi,
Does anybody know if oracle 9i supports direct import-
functionality to a clipper database?
Greetings,
Jurry

The answer would be to extract data from .dbf file to .csv and
then use the external table functionality in 9i.

    when I was trying to up the database it is looking for another listener
    and massage coming listener is not running...Not clear. The database does not look for a listener, maybe you got that error when trying to connect ?
    Do you have a listener 10g service ? Did you start it ? If not, please try the following :
    C:\> set ORACLE_HOME=<Your 10g Home>
    C:\> set PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\bin;%PATH%
    C:\> lsnrctl start
    wait up to a minute, then execute
    C:\> lsnrctl status

  • Oracle RMAN and SAP Databases

    Hi all,
    Am mainly an Oracle DBA and had just recently return to supporting SAP customers after a 4 year absence of supporting non-SAP customers.
    Anyway, I have some question on using Oracle RMAN with SAP databases. Backup softwares are Netbackup and Data Protector.
    I managed to get the backup working, that is, there is no issues, Oracle RMAN backup using SAP's brarchive and brbackup works alright. My question is about using an Oracle RMAN catalog. I've read thru several SAP documentation and cannot find one where I can use a RMAN catalog.
    Reading from
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d1/43d7cab9a04a409cc46876e36762c2/content.htm
    Does that mean I cannot use a RMAN catalog? Had anyone managed to use a RMAN catalog to do the RMAN backup?
    *Another question I have is, do I need Netbackup and Data Protector if I want to run RMAN backup to disk via brarchive and brbackup? Does backint requires a SBT library to use RMAN? What I mean is, I want to use RMAN but doing backup to disk instead of to tape which means I don't need the tape library installed, will backint know that this is the case and will not look for the tape library?
    Any advise or feedback on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Extracts from http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d1/43d7cab9a04a409cc46876e36762c2/content.htm are as below:
    The Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) is an Oracle backup program. You can use it as a command line interface (CLI) or as a graphical user interface (GUI) in the Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM). We support RMAN with the SAP backup tools BRBACKUP and BRARCHIVE.
    RMAN uses the System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface to back up to tape devices. We implement SBT using the SAP backup library. External backup tools can implement this interface as a dynamic link library (DLL).
    Integration
    By integrating RMAN into BRBACKUP, you can add security and flexibility to important functions in existing backup strategies and tools:
    · The recovery catalog is not used. The backup information is stored in the control file. After the backup, the control file is also backed up. In a restore, the control file is restored first, followed by the data files.
    · The integration of RMAN into BRBACKUP also guarantees integration into the SAP Structure linkComputing Center Management System (CCMS).
    · BRBACKUP tape management functions as previously (that is, as when using the SAP backup library).
    · You can still use the BACKINT interface with external tools.
    · All previous SAP backup strategies are supported while using RMAN. Nevertheless, RMAN is not supported for standby database backups and split-mirror backups.
    · The following components are delivered with the standard Oracle8 installation:
    ¡ RMAN with the Oracle SBT interface
    ¡ Backup library and backup tool Networker from Legato
    ¡ Legatou2019s BACKINT interface implementation (as of Oracle 8.0.5)
    The SAP installation also delivers the SAP backup library with BRBACKUP and BRARCHIVE.

    Hi,
    This question has been answered by Stefan Koehler. Not sure why the thread is not updated by his response. I am hoping to give him the max points actually.
    It was a very good response which is as below:
    Subject: Re: Oracle RMAN and SAP Databases
    Message: Hello,
    > Does that mean I cannot use a RMAN catalog? Had anyone managed to use a RMAN catalog to do the RMAN backup?
    Correct - if you are using the BR*Tools and RMAN you are not able to use a RMAN catalog with it.
    You can do manual catalog syncs, but the BR*Tools are not supporting a catalog database.
    >Does backint requires a SBT library to use RMAN?
    Check this documentation (Point "RMAN Backups Without Backup Library"): http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/3f/9d800e1aec11d2b42c00609419997a/content.htm
    > Any advise or feedback on this will be very much appreciated.
    We are also using RMAN for taking backup of all our oracle database (SAP and non-SAP), but without any BR*Tools.
    That is also possible - check sapnote #105047 (Part "50. Recovery Manager (RMAN)").
    As you mentioned, that you are a fulltime DBA you should have enough knowledge to use RMAN without BR*Tools.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Oracle 10gAS and 11g Database

    hi,
    I am planning to upgrade our existing Oracle 8i & forms6i to oracle 11g database and 10g AS.
    I have only one server for both. 10gAS has a database along with the installation.
    But i need to use 11g DB. so my questions are
    1.how do we avoid installing 10g databse as a part of AS.
    2. Which one to install first. 11g database or 10gAS(i have only one server).
    3. 10g Developer suite will be in my local PC. is it right ?

    I guess it really depends on what you want to do :
    If you want to change as little as possible, I would advise the Forms and Reports Services Standalone, available from OTN. This version is certified with RDBMS 11gR1 but not with RDBMS 11gR2. Note that additional functionality such as Single Sign-On will not be available in this standalone version.
    Should you want the full blown functionality, I would advise to skip AS10g and go straight for FMW11gR2 (11.1.1.2). You will need an infrastructure but that can be done with Identity Management 10.1.4.3 with an 11gR2 (11.2.0.4) database. The FMW11g documentation will tell you how.
    BTW - the developer suite most likely need to be on your local PC. For FWM 11gR2, the builders are only supported on Linux 32 bits and Windows 32 bits platforms.
    Hope this helps,
    EJ

  • Oracle stream and  standby database

    i want to implement stream(table level) in the following scenario
    what i must to set for standby as when i switch to standby database the stream work correctly like when primary was working.
    DB1--------------------stream---------------------DB2
    DB1standby .......................................DB2standby
    Narges.

    Your schema above do not tell us if this is a streams master/master. Also it is important to know if you a doing full schema replication or only some tables.
    For the db_name think global name : how do you setup a propagation when the source DB and target DB have the same TNS entry - whose name is driven by the rule dblink name = global_name = tns entry.
    Here it is a slightly different case : DG will succeed to SRC and appear as the same DB for the remote though they are on different hostname. Only way is the fail over in tns entry when you set multiple host for the same services.
    The rest should be ok except for the lost data of SRC which requires a re-sync.
    On the streams side problems remains and I am still skeptic on the feasibility : on paper no problems but problems come fast for the data's lost during the switch to DG (and this is to be expected with async DG, last SCN's will be missing on DG but not necessary on remote target site).
    Then both sites will start suffering on the loss of this data most probably with ORA 1403 data not found or Streams transactions pending and there is no way to predict the extend of this in advance. The re-sync of this status is then crucial and I am working on this. I will come back to the community with a generic procedure for master-master re-sync. One of the main problem is to identify table remote correspondents: These are easy to determine for declarative transformations but for transformation done within apply handler or transformation function associated to a context I have not find better than to comes back to the DBA and ask pitifully which are the remote target tables. The correspondence is a precious data that do not appear in any data dictionary view, but is only into the text of a pl/sql block.
    For my comments on the others thread, when the former SRC comes back, I have not considered the possibility in 11g to re-sync the former Master with a DG being the new master and sound like I should have.
    But this is all new also for me and I need to test it. if it works then you don't have the problem to setup a downstream capture between 2 DB having the same db_name.

  • Installing Oracle 8i and Developer 6.0 technet packages on NT

    I recently purchased the Oracle 8i (8.1.6) and Developer 6.0 "packages" from technet ($200/each). The Oracle 8i Enterprise Server software installed without any problems [ Oracle home = ora81 ]. However, when I tried to install the Developer package [ to oradev ], I got a message indicating that the install would replace my "ora81" registry settings with the "oradev" settings... which it did, thereby rendering my database "in-operable".
    After repeatedly removing and reinstalling the two packages, I was finally able to get both installed with an "operable" database. However, I keep getting a TNSNAMES error message when I try to connect to the database from Oracle Forms. Has anyone else encountered this scenario??? I am quite experienced in "using" Oracle tools and the database, but NOT when it comes to installing and configuring them...
    At this point, I believe that my problem lies with SQL*Net... any ideas???

    U-da-Man!
    Thanks, Martin... your step-by-step process worked like a charm! Although, having used Oracle products for 7+ years, I am amazed that the Developer package had to be installed before the database. I wonder what will happen when I eventually install Developer 6i ??
    Anyway, thanks again for the info!

    Hi Dave,
    Did not install Oracle 816 up to now. But still..
    Developer 6 has to be installed in DEFAULT_HOME...
    See the procedure below (source Oracle (modified)).
    Installation Procedure
    Follow this procedure to install Developer 6.0 and Oracle 8i on the same physical machine in separate ORACLE_HOMEs on NT:
    1) Install Developer 6.0 using the instructions on the Developer CD.
    Specify an appropriate drive and the ORANT directory as the destination. For example:
    D:\ORANT
    Note: You must install Developer in the Oracle home named DEFAULT_HOME.
    2) Install RDBMS 8.1.5 from the Oracle 8i CD. Specify the following information when prompted for the Oracle Home and Full path:
    Oracle Home ora8i
    Full Path d:\orant\ora8i
    Choose Typical Install
    Global Database Name ora8i.us.oracle.com (This is an example)
    SID ORA8I (This is an example)
    As the product installs, a summary is displayed that shows the products that are installed and the space requirements.
    When the installation is complete, the following information is displayed and the installer exits:
    Oracle Database Configuration Assistant Alert Database Creation Completed.
    Database Information
    Global Database Name ora8i.us.oracle.com
    SID ORA8I
    Sys password change_on_install
    System passwd manager
    3) A TNSNAMES entry needs to be created in the tnsnames.ora file for the new Oracle 8i installation. You can find the file in:
    d:\orant\net80\admin\tnsnames.ora
    A default entry will look like this:
    alias.world
    (DESCRIPTION
    (ADDRESS_LIST
    (ADDRESS
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = )
    (Port = )
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = )
    For example, if you installed on a machine with a HOSTNAME of TEST, a SID named ORA8I, on TCP/IP with port 1521, and an alias of NEW, you would create the following entry:
    NEW.world
    (DESCRIPTION
    (ADDRESS_LIST
    (ADDRESS
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = TEST)
    (Port = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORA8I)
    4) If you manually created the entry, save and close the tnsnames.ora file.
    You can now connect to the local database instance of 8i using the DBSTRING as NEW. For example, you can connect as scott/tiger@NEW.

  • Installation of Oracle 10g und 9i Database on one Windows 2003 Srv System

    Hello,
    I would like to install Oracle 9i and 10g database on the same server.
    OS is Windows 2003 Server default.
    I already read that i must do some adjustments (regarding ORACLE_HOME / SIDs ..)
    anyone here who knows something about this ?
    Thank you
    Philip

    Yep.
    Install 9i and when it asks for a port to install the listener pick something other than 1521. (1522 should work).
    Then the Oracle 10g installation should go without a hitch.

  • Oracle 8i And Java

    I have JDK 1.5 Update 1 installed in my system and have Oracle 8.1.7 database . I have successfully connected both using ODBC data sources in my Windows XP SP2. Can i connect them using URL address, like we can do in Oracle 9i and later databases of Oracle.
    thanks in advance
    Sujeet

    hi all!
    by this im stopping my question as i solved it today. i was not using the url format, so was the problem giving starnge messages.
    solution :
    if using JDK 1.4.2 download ojdbc14.jar and set it on ur classpath. url format is as shown below :
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@<host>:<port1521>:<sid>
    write the following sample code.........
    import java.sql.*;
    class Preeti
         public static void main(String[] args) throws SQLException
              Connection con;
              DatabaseMetaData meta;
              String url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@sujeet:1521:ram";
              String user = "scott";
              String password = "tiger";
              DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
              con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, password);
              Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
              ResultSet rst = stmt.executeQuery("select * from emp");
              meta = con.getMetaData();
              System.out.println("Got Results............");
              System.out.println("DBMS : " + meta.getDatabaseProductName());
              //System.out.println("Version : " + meta.getDatabaseMajorVersion());
              System.out.println("JDBC Driver Name : " + meta.getDriverName());
              System.out.println("JDBC Driver Version : " + meta.getDriverVersion());
              while(rst.next())
                   System.out.println(rst.getString(1));
              con.close();
    }

  • How to access MYSQL from Oracle 10g and vice versa

    I will like to know how do I create a database link between Oracle 10g and MYSQL database on windows.  I have been saddled with responsibility of ensuring the communications between the 2 databases and I have searched everywhere on google, I could not find anywhere where this is explain explicitly and made work.
    THank you

    In general Oracle offers 2 different products to connect from an Oracle database to a MS SQL Server. The first product is for free and it is called
    As DG4ODBC is a generic connectivity based on ODBC it allows you to connect to many foreign databases as long as you have a suitable ODBC driver.It for example allows you to read from text files but also connect to foreign databases like MS SQL Server or IBM DB2. Due to this wide variety of foreign data sources tha capabilities of DG4ODBC are very limited. It only supports a few Oracle functions that it can directly map to foreign database equivalents. All other functions will be post processed. Post processing means that ALL records from the foreign table(s) will be fetched into the Oracle database and the result is then processed locally - so depending on the amount of data stored in the foreign database it might take a while.
    To be complete here some notes to follow up:
    This Oracle support note describes possible options you have to connect to a foreign database:
    Document 233876.1 Options for Connecting to Foreign Data Stores and Non-Oracle Databases - For example - DB2, SQL*Server, Sybase, Informix, Teradata, MySQL
    So you see, to connect from Oracle to MySQL you need to use the Database gateway for ODBC release 11.2 (HSODBC which was shipped with 10g was desupported in march 2008).
    The Database Gateway for ODBC 11.2 (=DG4ODBC) license is included in the Oracle database license and it allows you to connect with a suitable 3rd party ODBC driver to a foreign database.
    For your MySQL connection you only need to download and configure the MySQL ODBC driver from the MySQL web site. Once you can connect with the ODBC driver you could then download and configure DG4ODBC.
    As you didn't post on which platform your Oracle database is installed, here 2 notes for common platforms:
    How to Configure DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX Itanium) to Connect to Non-Oracle (Doc ID 561033.1)
    How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on 64bit Windows Operating Systems to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 1266572.1)

    Install 9i into an ORACLE_HOME.
    Install 10g into an other ORACLE_HOME.
    Nothing more is required, only the Oracle requirements for each version.
    Your attention when you will connect, set always the good ORACLE_HOME before connection.

  • Client for win 7 64 bit to access 10g and 8i database in Benthic Goldview

    Can someone provide a link to a client I can install in my windows 7 64 bit that will allow me to access a Oracle 10g and 8i database?  I'm using Benthic Goldview.
    Please provide some high level installation instructions also.

    Scenario:  I'm using windows 7 pro, 64 bit, I vpn in to another network.  They have a box called 'thunder', that has a 8i db on it called arab805.  I have the username and password for it.
    What I did:  I tried using Squirrel to connect, keep getting an error saying it can't connect to it.
    An actual error message would have been very useful. "an error saying it can't connect to it.'  is totally devoid of useful information.
    Somewhere I found some info that said I had to set up a DSN on my box first.  Tried that, wasn't able to make it work.
    What, exactly, did "Tried that" consist of?  To me, "setting up a DSN" would mean configuring a Data Source Name connection definition for ODBC.  That still requires installing and configuring the Oracle client software.
    Question:  Please provide me some detailed instructions on how to get this working.  Please don't provide me a link to something only a db guru would understand, I need some hand-holding help please.  If you could start with the high-level first, then work your way to more detailed, that would be great!
    example, something like this for a start - then give me more detail please:
    download oracle client
    set up dsn connection
    set up squirrel
    Ok,
    - Download Oracle client  (edelivery.oracle.com -- drill down from there to find the 11.2 client download.  Be sure to read all the 'read me' files and instructions on the web page itself.
    - Install the orcle client from the download.
    - Once installed, use the 'netca' utlility to configure the orcle client connection definition.
    - Make sure you can use the oracle client program 'sqlplus' to connect to the database.  Only after that is working will it make any sense to ..
    - Configure the ODBC DSN.
    Quite making excuses about 'not being a DBA guru'.  It's not necessary to be a DBA guru to to do this, and we understand that it is all new to you.  But it is the same basics you should know as a developer ... read instructions, research error messages, etc.

  • General questions on how to get started with Oracle OEPE and databases

    My company has a server in the cloud, written using Ruby on Rails. The server is designed to work with a browser, so it communicates via standard HTTP.
    The server has an SQL database.
    The server sends and receives HTTP requests from clients, which are then used to either update the database or retrieve information from the database.
    The database can be edited from a separate admin dashboard.
    I have recently rewritten our client software as a native android app. The new app makes calls to the server that look like browser calls. I have used Eclipse to develop the Android app.
    Sounds pretty standard so far, right? :-)
    I now want to replace the Ruby on Rails server with a new Java server that I will write. I want to use Eclipse to develop the new server. During development, I want to be able to have the new Android app communicate with the development server software that will reside on my desktop.
    So I was thinking that Oracle's tools might be perfect for me, if only I knew which tools to use. There are lot to choose from. :-)
    I believe that all I need is OEPE and a database. I would like to keep it pretty simple. I don't want to learn 20 new tools. It will be enough effort to become proficient in OEPE and a database.
    I looked at "Oracle Database Tools >> Connecting to an Oracle database" in the help files for OEPE 12.1.1. I tried going through the help files for Database connections, but I got to a "New Connection Profile" form that asks me for a SID, a user name, a password, etc. I don't have any of those. I tried to enter some data in the forms and ping the database, but I could not get any results from the ping. So my first question is: Do I have to sign up for an Oracle database in the cloud or is there a database contained within the OEPE software that I just installed. I will have to do the former anyway when I eventually deploy my new server software, so maybe the right thing to do is sign up for the "database in the cloud" service now, and use it during development.
    The other question I have is about getting a simple application client and server application sample. I found a "hello world" example at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E13224_01/wlw/docs103/guide/webapplications/workshopJSP/tutorialJSP/TutorialJSPMakeJSP.html, but that is for WLS 10.3 and it doesn't seem to match the 12.1.1 software very well.
    So does anybody know where I can find a simple client and server sample program for WLS 12.1.1?
    If I can get these two questions answered, I can start making some progress.
    Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me navigate this minefield.
    Jim

    I wanted to add some information to my previous posting.
    1. The server I will develop will communicate ONLY with Android and iOS native apps, so the interface will not be HTML or XML. The information sent by the server to the client will be JSON. The information sent by the client to the server will be HTTP parameters, usually in the form of URL-encoded form data. This is not a browser-to-server server interface, so JSP is probably not appropriate for the server. The communication protocol will be HTTP.
    2. I don't need anything fancy on the server side. The server will simply be a Java program that emits JSON responses to the client and receives URL-encoded form data from the client. The server program will also make database queries and update the database.
    3. I don't understand how my native Android app will be able to communicate with my development server code running on my desktop. I want that communication to be over the internet, but my desktop does not have a static IP address, so I don't see how the app will be able to address the development server software on my desktop PC. I don't want to deploy the server software into the cloud every time I start a debug run, but I don't see any other way for my app to be able to address the server code over the Internet.
    If anybody has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them.

  • Can join queries in Oracle 8i and above span multiple databases

    Hi,
    In Oracle 8i and above, can join queries span multiple databases??
    For eg., I have two databases A and B, and say database A has table A_T and
    database B has table B_T. Assume that both the databases are on the same
    server.
    Can I run a join query from my application using OCI calls that spans across
    tables from multiple databases, namely, A_T and B_T?
    My query probably looks like this - Select * from A.A_T, B.B_T;
    Thank you,
    Sashi

    My query probably looks like this - Select * from A.A_T, B.B_T;If you create a database link from database A to B your SQL would look something like this:
    select * from A.A_T, B.B_T@dbB where A.A_T.PK = B.B_T.PK@dbB
    The Oracle manuals should have the information you need on creating a database link.

  • CONNECTING ORACLE 9I OR 10G DATABASE WITH ORACLE 10G FORMS AND REPORTS

    pls tell how to connect oracle 9i or 10g database with oracle developer suite 10g . though the forms are getting connected but not running with error as
    FRM-10142 the HTTP listner is not running on pls start the listner or check your runtime preferences.
    now pls tell how to start listner and how to chage runtime preferences.
    though i have worked with oracle 9i and forms 6i where we used to copy the tnsnames.ora from network/admin of oracle to forms 6i tnsnames.ora.
    thank you, you may be thinking such a long question.....

    sir
    By server i mean the computer where oc4j and backend database are running is one one of the client pc not a dedicated server..., these database and 10g dev suite are installed in one of the client machine,
    all the clients are using same internet explorer as browser.
    no message is being displyed on some of the client machine where these forms are not being uploaded on browser instead it displays as done in status bar without actually showing anything at all...
    sir so far as jinitiator or JRE is concered i have seen on the client machine (where my forms are running on internet explorer) a pop up is displyed telling one activex control is required to run this program and click to install it..
    after clicking it download jinitiator from server and after installing jinitiator my forms are loaded and start functioning...
    what i feel is as i said this machine where oc4j and database is running is one of the client machine so some other clients do not have acess to this machine, so this might be the reason why those clints are not able to run the said forms on the internet explorer.... can it be so... kindly tell..
    thank you for your patience for reading the question
