Oracle 9i Client on Mac OS X
Is there a way to just install the Oracle client on Mac OS 10.2.7? I don't want the full database server running - and just need the drivers to connect to an Oracle instance in our corporation.
Please let me know - everything I've seen from the download and installations seems to be around running Oracle itself.
Thanks.
Yes I run JDeveloper on MAC OS X and it works very well apart from UML and iSQL. It makes a good development tool.
I have had no propblems using the Oracle 9i JDBC driver to talk to the Oracle dastabase on the MAC from a number of downloadable front end tools and apps. I see no reason why this would not work to connect to the database on another machine/platform.

Oracle 9i Client Install on Mac OSX
Is there a way to just install the Oracle client on Mac OSX 10.2.7 (not OS X Server)?
I downloaded the 9.2 Mac installer, but everything I've seen/read shows this installation will install the DB server and set up a database.
If anyone knows, please let me know... I'm just looking to connect (through PHP CLI) to a Oracle DB within our corporation. Thanks.Hi,
Checkout MacSQL on www.rtlabs.com, there is info on installing Oracle OCI client and a link to the client only software.

Oracle Lite and Oracle 8i Client on Win98
I've had Olite v8i running on my Win98 machine for a while now. I just installed Oracle 8i Client on my machine. Now, my JDBC driver for Oracle Lite does NOT work. What could have happened here??
Thanks.
-Jeremy
nullHI Jeremy,
I think, Your PATH was cranked up.
The JDBC driver for OLite normally does not use any OCI DLLs, so that should not be the problem. As I said, the OLite dlls may be missing now from the PATH.
Any error messages? "Does not work" is a bit... fuzzy. -
Unable to install Oracle XE Client on Ubuntu 8.04 - "no such user"
Hi,
I've just installed Oracle XE client on my desktop machine (64bit Ubuntu 8.04), and I had to manually create some users and groups:
sudo groupadd nobody
sudo groupadd oinstall
sudo useradd -s /bin/bash -g oinstall -G dba oracle
sudo passwd oracle
before the install would complete, due to what appears to be incorrect arguments to useradd by the installer.
It took quite a lot of hunting to find the above, and I'm a little concerned since no one else seems to have had the same problems.
I installed using:
$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-client_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb
(the force-architecture was required for the server install on my server, so I did the same here)
I read the install instructions on the oracle pages
(http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/files/install.102/b25144/toc.htm#BABFEDEI) and didn't see anything about having to manually create these accounts, and I seem to have followed the rest of the instructions correctly.
What did I do wrong? I'm probably going to have to do it again sometime, and I'm a little concerned that I might have just been causing trouble for myself by doing those extra manual steps.
Note that I had to provide a password for the oracle user; how does oracle manage to log in using this account, since I didn't have to provide it anywhere?
Any help/advice would be appreciated,
many thanks,
William

I am trying to use the relatively new Code First from Database with the newest EF (6.x) and on an Oracle database (11g, but I have installed the newest ODTwithODAC). First of all, it works fine as long as the connection string is inside the App.Config file. But when I try to build it dynamically in the C# code (or rather, statically at the moment) it fails. I have it working with a dynamically built connection string when doing Model from Database though, so I'm at a loss right now.
First, I have created a second constructor for the context class that takes a string and does base(connectionString). Then I build the connection string via
OracleConnectionStringBuilder oracleBuilder = new OracleConnectionStringBuilder();
oracleBuilder.DataSource = "TEST.BLA.COM";
oracleBuilder.UserID = "ABC";
oracleBuilder.Password = "abc";
oracleBuilder.PersistSecurityInfo = true;
string connection = oracleBuilder.ToStrin();
Now trying to open an EntityConnection by giving to it this provider-specific connection string (or even the static one from the App.Config) doesn't work; I get "keyword not supported: user id"). Trying it by creating a context and giving this connection string doesn't work either. I'm pretty sure that this is because I didn't specify the provider to use; after all, it should use the Oracle.ManagedDataAccess.Client provider and not an SQL Server based one.
I then tried to get around this by using an EntityConnectionStringBuilder on top and specifying the provider keyword there, but then I get "keyword not supported: provider" when using it in the context constructor, and "the 'metadata' keyword is always required" when using it with the EntityConnection constructor.
As I said above: I bet it's the provider that I have to specify somehow, but I don't know how. The code that does work is the following:
using (var context = new Model())
context.Database.Connection.Open();
context.Database.Connection.Close();
When I read context.Database.Connection.ConnectionString, it is exactly the provider-specific connection string I created above, but I don't know where to specify the provider again. Do you know of any way to do this? Certainly there must be one.
PS: I have also posted this question on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27979454/ef-code-first-from-database-with-managed-oracle-data-access-dynamic-connection because it is quite urgent and I'd like to use Code First from Database. Otherwise I'd have to go "back" to using Model from Database again, which is not ideal because we have updatable views where the .edmx-file has to be edited after every reload of the model, while with Code First from DB inserting into the view automatically works.I am trying to use the relatively new Code First from Database with the newest EF (6.x) and on an Oracle database (11g, but I have installed the newest ODTwithODAC). Database connection encryption and integrity with ColdFusion and Oracle thin client
As ColdFusion datasource we are using the Oracle thin client to connect with the database. So, basically we are using a JDBC URL such as jdbc:oracle:thin:@... and as Driver Class oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver. This works successfully however we would like to set encryption and integrity parameters as well. In Java this is done similarly by setting a Properties object prior to getting a connection as follows:
Properties prop = new Properties();
prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_client", "REQUIRED");
prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_types_client", "( DES40 )");
prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_client", "REQUESTED");
prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_types_client", "( MD5 )");
OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
ods.setProperties(prop);
ods.setURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:main");
Connection conn = ods.getConnection();
Is there a way that I can pass these parameters to the ColdFusion datasource. Ideally, I would love to do this centrally in such way that a change to all the cfquery or cfstoredproc is not needed.
I also know that in application servers such as Oracle AS there is an option when creating a datasource which says "Add Properties". In there you can add such properties. So, I was thinking of maybe creating a JNDI DS in the app. server and then magically connecting to it but this may have some impacts on the app.
Besides this I was also thinking of communicating with the CF datasource through the CF admin API (cfide.adminapi.administrator) and also the option of extending the Oracle driver so that when CF connects with it these params are already set.
I would love to have your professional opinion and suggestions on this.I believe the thin driver actually needs the IP address (not the DNS name). Also, is "java" the name of the Oracle instance to which you are trying to connect?
Try the following:String driver = "jdbc:oracle:thin";
String dbIP = "W2RZ1NXG01's IP address";
String dbPort = "1530";
String dbSid = "java";
String dbUser = "Admin";
String dbPswd = "apassword";
String cnctStr = driver + ":@" + dbIP + ":" + port + ":" + dbSid;
try
Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
con = DriverManager.getConnection( cnctStr, dbUser, dbPswd );
stmt = con.createStatement();
stmt.executeUpdate(createString);
stmt.close();
con.close();
catch(SQLException ex)
System.err.println( "The following SQLException occurred: " + ex );
System.err.println( "Message: " + ex.getMessage() ); -

TNS-12541: No listner on Windows VISTA (oracle 10g client)
Hi all,
After installing an Oracle 10g Client for Windows Vista, when trying to connect to the database, i got the error No listner (TNS-12541). I checked the database listner but it's running and i can connect there from XP OS client. Does anybody have an idea about that.
tnsping give the same error also but when i ping the server it gives response.
Any body has experioenced the same problem, if yes could you help please it's very urgent.
Thanks regards
raitsarevoraitsarevo,
First of all: it's not very urgent. Very urgent requests end up in a SR at http://metalink.oracle.com.
Oracle doesn't support all editions of Vista and 10g may not even support Vista at all. Please refer to the download page for 10g at http://otn.oracle.com for further details.
A non-supported edition of Mickeysoft usually results in Oracle Net issues.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function odbc_connect() in /var/www/html/waseem.php on line 20
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Is the problem with oci_connect or odbc_connect?
The phpinfo() output shows '--without-unixODBC' which may be a root cause. There is no 'odbc' section shown in the phpinfo() output so I wouldn't expect odbc calls to work.
But if the issue is with OCI8, then make sure that Oracle environment variables and LD_LIBRARY_PATH are set BEFORE starting Apache.
More information on OCI8 and PHP is in http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/php/underground-php-oracle-manual.html

Connect mac client to mac printer share across subnets
I need to share printers from a Mac. I need to connect
Mac clients on different subnets to the Mac shared printers. I installed
a Mac mini, connected to printers via HP JetDirect Socket (port 9100), and
shared them. I was able to print from the Mac mini, and connect Mac
clients on the same subnet to the shared printers with Bonjour and print.
I moved the Mac mini to its intended location on another subnet. I
immediately learned that Bonjour does not publish services across
subnets. I could not find documentation on how to connect to a Mac shared
printer across subnets, but I did find some third party documentation (only some incomplete
documentation from Apple) on how to implement DNS-SD Service Discovery. I
enabled DNS-SD and was able to publish the printer shares across subnets, but I
was still unable to connect to the printer shares from a Mac client. I
found some third party documentation (none from Apple) on how to manually connect to a Mac
printer share by specifying the IP address of the server, specifying the CUPS
default IPP protocol, and the print queue name. I was unable to connect
to the shared printers. I receive ping replies from my Mac mini, and port
scan reveals that port 631 for IPP, CUPS default, is open. Printer
sharing is configured so everyone can print. I am able to connect to the Mac
mini with VNC Screen Sharing. I don’t see how this can be a network
issue.
Macs don’t seem to like to connect to our Windows
shared printers because of our PaperCut software, and connecting Mac clients to
Windows printer shares and authentication is beyond the average user,
exacerbated by Macs not behaving the same as Windows when bound to an Active
Directory domain.
I called Apple support, they escalated to Apple Enterprise
support. Apple Enterprise support said they couldn’t help me beyond a
single network with no subnets, but Apple Engineering might be able to solve
the problem for $695.
Why do I need to pay $695 to learn how to connect Mac
clients to Mac shared printers, something that should be easy and intuitive and
have documentation readily available? Windows printer sharing is easy and
intuitive and documentation is readily available, and services are published
across subnets without have to implement DNS-SD.Thank you for your reply. I followed the instructions in the sybaspot.com site and in some of the included references to set up DNS-SD. DNS-SD worked, but I couldn't connect the Mac client to the Mac shared printers.
I also found http://www.papercut.com/products/ng/manual/ch-mac-printing-10-8-9.html#ch-mac-pr inting-10-8-9-sharing-printers.
I expanded my search and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13940, last modified May 8, 2014. I started work on my project February 2014. Apple Support could have told me about this document.
PH13940 says: "The computers must be on the same local network as your Mac". Apple must not consider multiple subnets one network.
PH13940 says: "Printer sharing is for printers attached directly to your Mac. You don’t need to share network printers, because they are already shared on the network."
Apple must define "network printers" as any printer with a network interface. Microsoft defines network printers as printers shared by another computer. TCP/IP ports are local ports on a Windows computer, so TCP/IP connected printers are local printers that can be shared. Multiple users on a Mac all see the same connected printers. Multiple users on Windows all see the same local printers, but network printer connections can be different for each user.
Apple must not see any value in accounting for printing and assigning the cost to the user or department. We need to account for printing and cannot have any users bypassing the system by printing directly to printers. I have created Access Control lists on the printers to limit connections to the specific IP addresses of our print servers.
The documents about setting up DNS-SD and IPP connections must have assumed USB connected printers on a Mac. The odd thing is that I was able to share a network printer from the Mac mini when the client Mac was on the same subnet. Is PH13940 wrong?

JVM Crash With Oracle OCI Client
Hi
My app is running on Windows 7 64 bit, Jboss 4.2, launched from Eclipse, and runs fine when I use the Oracle thin client (10g, 32bit). However when I try to use the OCI client, I get this:
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
# EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6d906f21, pid=4740, tid=5656
# JRE version: 6.0_21-b07
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (17.0-b17 interpreted mode windows-x86 )
# Problematic frame:
# V [jvm.dll+0x106f21]
I'll post the contents of the log in another message because it's too long to fit here. Using the thin client is NOT an option unfortunately as the thin driver is missing some functionality that we need to use.
I've installed the Oracle client in a folder that doesn't contain spaces, or parentheses (c:\oracle\.....) and the JDK is installed in a similar directory (c:\java\...)
I've tried both 32bit and 64 bit versions of JDK1.6 and the Oracle 10g client. I have also tried mixed mode and interpreted mode JVM (Xint) with the same results.
ojdbc14.jar is in my JBoss server's lib directory, and ocijdbc10.dll is in my path (c:\windows\system32).
Anyone any ideas what's going wrong? Been trying to fix this for days now. Appreciate any help.
RichardSorted it (well, my colleague did anyway). We installed a fresh version (32 bit) JDK (6u21), the Oracle 10g (10.0.3) client (32 bit) and made sure that there were no other OCI DLLs anywhere. I had some in the JBoss bin directory which I had copied in earlier that morning and forgotten about. So, the only OCI DLLs I have now are in Oracle's installation directory. Once we removed those erroneous DLLs from the JBoss directory, the server made the connection successfully. I don't full understand why, because I was getting the error earlier without the erroneous DLLs being present too, so I think there was some additional interaction going on somewhere. One other thing that may have been important is the tnsnames.ora file I had. We found a post that said the tnsnames file generated by the installer, when it only has one entry in it, can include dodgy whitespace at the end which can cause problems. So, just to be on the safe side we added a second entry (to another DB) - maybe that was something to do with it.
So, the Oracle 10g client and OCI driver DOES work on Windows 7 64 bit (at least for me anyway)
