Oracle 9i Data Guard Documentation

Hi,
I am trying to get documentation on Oracle 9i Data Guard.
When I am at this url: http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/DataGuardOverview.html
I then activate the link on the right for "Oracle 9i Data Guard Documentation".
However, the link moves me to "Oracle 9i list of books", instead of where I want to be.
Can you please rectify this or send me the link to get this documentation.
Thanks,
Jason Metzker

Hi
The response I received in regards to the links to the Oracle 9i Data Guard Documentation page is that the link is correct.
The Data Guard doc is part of the database documentation set which is why the Oracle 9i Data Guard Documentation links takes you to the list of books. The Data Guard Documentation is also listed in the list of books.
Thanks & Regards,
Chao

  • What is the role of Lns process in oracle 10g data guard

    Hi ,
    plz help me out to find out the actual working of lns process in oracle 10g data guard
    when i use SYNC redo transport
    the output of v$managed_stanbdy is like that ..
    PROCESS PID STATUS CLIENT_PROCESS GR# SEQ#
    ARCH 9258 CLOSING ARCH 2 498
    ARCH 9260 CLOSING ARCH 1 499
    ARCH 9262 CLOSING ARCH 2 496
    ARCH 9264 CLOSING ARCH 1 497
    LGWR 9206 CLOSING LGWR 2 482
    its not display any info about lns,thats means lns is not working in SYNC redo transport mode ?
    but if i changed it to ASYNC then the out put of v$managed_stanbdy is like this ..
    PS PID STS CPS GR# SEQ#
    ARCH 9258 CLOSING ARCH 1 509
    ARCH 9260 CLOSING ARCH 2 510
    ARCH 9262 CLOSING ARCH 1 505
    ARCH 9264 CLOSING ARCH 2 508
    LGWR 9206 CLOSING LGWR 1 503
    LNS 10528 CLOSING LNS 2 510
    Now it display all the info about lns process...
    i read in oracle documentation that lns process send redo data from primary,( through network service ) to RFS on standby side.
    but first output means that lns is not working,if not then which process send redo from primary to RFS on standby ?
    i also read in some blog that lgwr use some extra buffer size from primary db SGA ,to write redo in that buffer ,ans lns read redo from that buffer and send it to RFS on stanby side,
    i m totally confused ..can u plz help me with correct logic behind this .
    thanx in advance.

    Hello,
    On the primary database when you run the v$managed_standby, it shows up the LNS process as this process sends redo info to the standby database and on the standby database the RFS process receives the redo information.
    So on the primary database when you query the v$managed_standby, it shows up LNS and on the standby database when you query the v$managed_standby it shows up RFS. Please let us know where you are running the query.

  • Oracle 10gR2 Data guard physical or logical standby server?

    Hi
    We are planing to implement an Oracle 10gR2 data guard standby server for DR purposes, I found out that there are two type of standby server which is logical and physical standby server. I want to know which one is preferable? in term of complexity of setup and maintenance?
    regards

    Well it depends on what you mean by maintenance. I found the physical standby to be very little trouble at all ; however the logical standby has restrictions on it that the physical standby does not. In essence the physical standby merely digest archive logs; where as the logical standby uses logminer like functionality to process sql statements much like Oracle streams.
    Hope that helps,
    -JR jr.

  • Oracle 9i Data Guard on Solaris 9

    I've set up a database on two separate servers and am creating a physical standby database using Oracle's documentation. Since there are few folks I can talk to who have run dataguard for a failover operation, I need some experienced advice.
    Thus far, I have:
    1) enabled force logging on the Primary Database and ensured the primary is also in archivelog mode and have defined a local archiving destination.
    2) Copied the datafiles on the primary DB to a temporary location, and created a control file for the standby database.
    3) Created a pfile from the spfile for future editing.
    4) The next step is what I'm unsure of - copying the files from the primary system to the standby system (datafiles, standby control file, and initialization parameter file). Where exactly should each of these files being copied over be placed...in the same directories traditionally used, or should I create a "standby" directory as a subdirectory. If I drop for example the standby control file in the traditional directory (i.e., $ORACLE_BASE/oradata/(sid)), should the other controlfile be left there?
    Any help would be most appreciated.

    Here is another way of setting up standby
    take a backup using following script and restore it as duplicate. Before restoring, make sure you have all the necessary configuraion set for standby and primary communiction. All the backedup archivelogs are available.
    run {
    sql 'alter session set optimizer_mode=rule';
    # Clean up the repository - prior to the backup
    crosscheck backupset;
    crosscheck copy;
    configure controlfile autobackup on;
    configure controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to '/your path/%%F';
    # Allocate Channels.
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '/your path/logs_%T_%U';
    #crosscheck copy of archivelog all;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE FOR STANDBY;
    backup as compressed backupset
    archivelog all
    tag archive_logs
    delete all input;
    # Release Channels.
    release channel c1;
    allocate channel c1 type disk format '/your path/dbf_%T_%U';
    allocate channel c2 type disk format '/your path/dbf_%T_%U';
    allocate channel c3 type disk format '/your path/dbf_%T_%U';
    allocate channel c4 type disk format '/your path/dbf_%T_%U';
    backup incremental level 0 cumulative
    as compressed backupset
    database
    plus archivelog
    tag database_inc0;
    backup as copy current controlfile
    format '/your path/bacracp11_control.ctl' reuse
    tag control_file;
    # Release Channels.
    release channel c1;
    release channel c2;
    release channel c3;
    release channel c4;
    for restore use following configurtion; please make changes to this according to rman setup
    run {
    allocate auxiliary channel c1 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel c2 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel c3 type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel c4 type disk;
    Make sure set all the files from your primary database use following example
    set newname for datafile 1 to '/your path/system01.dbf';
    set newname for tempfile '/your path/temp01.dbf' to '/your standby path/temp01.dbf';
    duplicate target database for standby;
    switch datafile all;
    switch tempfile all;
    release channel c1;
    release channel c2;
    release channel c3;
    release channel c4;
    }

  • Oracle 10g Data Guard

    Hello to all.
    I am looking forward to implement Logical standby database for one of my clients. I want to know about licensing implications for the same. Does creation of logical standby database in Oracle 10g require a License?? If if it does then what kind of license is required????
    Current setup :
    RHEL 5.5 64 bit
    Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 (Production Server)
    Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 (Physical Standby Server)
    We are having Enterprise Edition licenses for both.

  • How to add two protection mode in oracle data guard

    Hi all,
    We have a discussion on oracle physical data guard yesterday.....
    As we all know that data guard has 3 protection mode
    1. Maximum Performance
    2. Maximum Availability (Default)
    3. Maximum Protection
    Now we were discussing about is it possible to have two protection mode on same data guard simultaneously... for e.g. Maximum performance and maximum availability.
    We have searched a lot but don't find any help on google.
    Can any one help on this with any doc, pdf or links..
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,
    you don't find anything on this because it's not possible and would make no sense even if you could do it.
    Maximum Availability uses SYNC commit between primary and standby db. If you combine Max. Availabilty with Max. Performance then your db clients have to wait on commit until primary and the max. availability standby have commited. That they would not have to wait on another Max. Performance DB doesn't change anything to the client. You would only combine the disadvantages of both approaches, the wait on sync commit for max. availability and beeing not in sync with primary for the max. performance db.
    The max. protection mode requires by definition that the primary db shuts down in case no standby can process the commit. If the primary is not up and running it is pointless to have another (max. availability) standby db at hand, if this max. availability db would take over the service this would violate the defintion of max. protection. No Dataloss is valued higher than db availability, having the data commited only on one db site is not allowed.
    Regards
    Thomas

  • Oracle Data Guard 9i

    This is a quote from an Oracle publication on Oracle Data Guard 9i.
    "Oracle Data Guard's new SQL Apply feature creates a "logical standby" that enables continuous access to a working copy of your primary database. With SQL Apply, the standby database is continuously available for reporting and other operations, while always at-the-ready for unplanned failovers. Data Guard provides log shipping, remote mirroring, zero-data-loss disaster protection, and a single point of control and automation. "
    My question is: Is the standby database open in read-write or read-only mode?
    If, its only read, is there ANY other way read-write version of a database could be created at a remote site besides:
    a) Complete copying - duplicate database at remote site open in read-write.
    b) Distributed database - replication - remote users access their own version and the two keep themselves in sync.
    c) Parallel server - one database - two instances.

    Data Guard is available for Linux (within Oracle9i).
    It's a tool to make it much more easier to create a standby
    database, but I don't think it's required!
    Regards,
    Thomas.
    Is Oracle 9i data guard for Linux available??
    Well, my real question is, I need to setup 9i standby database
    on Linux. Do I need data guard installed in order to setup
    standby database??

  • Oracle 9i Backup/Restore with Data Guard Issues

    Greetings,
    I am currently using Oracle 9i Data Guard to have a Primary/Standby model.
    The current implementation compares the backup piece id from the backed up image (taken from the Primary) with the backup piece id on the Standby db. If the number are not equal then the restore will fail.
    1- Is this the best implementation for restoring on a standby?
    2- Would it be better to give a permitted gap range between the backup piece ids between the two databases? and if so what would be an acceptable range?
    3- In case the gap range discussed in #2 above is allowed, when the Standby is started as primary and the primary set to be standby, would the Data Guard automatically tries to retrieve all the missing archive/redo log files from the primary db?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I am not sure I am following you here. Are you trying to create a physical standby, by using a backup taken from the primary?
    If this is what you're trying to do, you can take any hot backup from the primary and use it to sync the standby with your primary. The older the backup you're using to create the standby, the more archive logs you'll need to get synchronized.
    As long as you have all the archive logs needed in the archive_log_dest, data guard will automatically retrieve all the missing logs, and apply them on the standby. Again, only if they are available on the primary.
    Not sure If this is what you were asking...
    Idan.

  • Data Guard Physical Standby Failover

    I need clarification on Physical Standby Failovers. Say I have a Primary db (A) and a physical standby (B), (A) fails and (B) is now the primary, can (A) be setup to become a standby of (B)? I've read 2 different statements in Oracle 10g Data Guard Concepts and Admin
    "During failovers involving a physical standby database: In all cases, after a failover, the original primary database can no longer participate in the Data Guard configuration."
    vice
    "After a fast-start failover occurs, the old primary database will automatically reconfigure itself as a new standby database upon reconnection to the configuration."
    Much thanks.

    In all cases, after a failover, the original primary database can no longer participate in the Data Guard configuration.
    TRUE ! But this doesn't mean that you cannot make your failed primary a new standby database !.
    You can achieve this using FLASHBACK DATABASE option:
    From the documentation:
    After a failover occurs, the original primary database can no longer participate in the Data Guard configuration until it is repaired and established as a standby database in the new configuration. To do this, you can use the Flashback Database feature to recover the failed primary database to a point in time before the failover occurred, and then convert it into a physical or logical standby database in the new configuration.
    Read the following documents:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/role_management.htm#sthref995
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/scenarios.htm#i1049997
    In addition to this I'd like to mention that you can achieve the same with doing an incomplete recovery instead of using FLASHBACK DATABASE.
    "After a fast-start failover occurs, the old primary database will automatically reconfigure itself as a new standby database upon reconnection to the configuration."
    TRUE. If you enable Fast-Start Failover:

  • License for Data Guard 11g - Observer

    Hi,
    I would like to know if fast-failover with Observer requires any additional licensing then just Data Guard.
    Thanks in advance.

    My first stop would be.... [Oracle 11g Licensing Information|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/license.111/b28287/toc.htm|Oracle 11g Licensing Information]. After that I would look at the Data Guard documentation.

  • Data Guard - Different Platforms

    Hello,
    I'm currently looking at Oracle's Data Guard/Standby DB option. (Standard Edition Version) Our primary database is on a Sun Solaris Sparc system and we want to have our Standby on an Sun Solaris Intel system. Is this possible with Sun Sparc? Will I run into issues attempting to apply the redo logs?
    Help??? :)
    Edited by: user10448714 on Aug 13, 2009 9:47 AM

    Check these Metatlink notes they may help you out here.
    execute this SQL for a database on the 2 platforms
    SQL> select platform_id, platform_name from v$database;
    You will need to check the platform_id for solaris it is 2, if the intel solaris is 2 then according to the document it should work.
    For a complete list of supported platform/OS combinations see Metalink Note 413484.1
    See Oracle Metalink Notes 395982.1 and/or 414043.1 for more exact restrictions and further details.

  • Active Data Guard Question

    Hi All,
    I'm thinking whether the oracle active data guard can enable "multiple" physical standby database to be opened for read-only access while Redo Apply is active?
    As i read a lot of document, seems like only able to enable "one" physical standby database only.
    Let say i have one production database, and i have two or more physical standby DB (can be RAC or stand alone) in different country,
    can this two physical standby be enable active data guard for read-only access?
    Any idea? Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,

    Dear klnghau,
    If your project is on hold now then you should have time to read some more!;
