Oracle 9i Installation on Existing Oracle 8i on HP Unix 11.11

Hi Gurus,
I need to Install Oracle 9i R2 with (9.2.0.6) Patch set on HP Unix Server.
My concern is
Oracle 8i running on the same server which is a production Database.
What are the pre Installation steps I need to take before installing Oracle 9i R2 as I came across with one like OraInventory – Should be backup & different ORACLE_HOME should be given to install Oracle 9i new DB.
Away from these things – anythings I need to configure or any services that I need to stop – like listener etc.
Thanks in advance

Away from these things – anythings I need to configure or any services that I need to stop – like listener etc.It depends on setting you want.
You may use two listeners separately or you can use one listener (9i) for both versions.
If you decide to use two listeners (better option) then they must be listening on different ports (of course) and you don't need to stop or reconfigure anything on 8i.
If you want use one listener for both instances (8i,9i) then you need to configure listener.ora for both instances and you should use 9i listener. But this option is not good as the first one.
Just little hint. Create in user's home new enviroment file (for example .oracle9) with completely new enviroment for 9i. Then for work with 9i simply reset the enviroment by execution of ". .oracle9".
Basicaly you don't need to stop anything during installation (but for sure you could to prevent some mistake during installtion) but installation could affect the server's performance.

  • Differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform

    Hello,
J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.
    Thank you.

We have installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 and it had a great performance, of course that the hardware and licence invested here was costed my the office where i work. Personaly i'd installed linux reh hat 8 and oracle 8i, imagine that, it could be implemented by any individual that has the time to do so.
By buyinng from a company that has a good background you could be sure that you will have support.
Bottom line, if you have the $ to buy great hardware go for a unix platform. But if you don't a Red Hat Linux Server Licence with a 1 year sopport and Oracle data base is about 3500Dls.

  • Trying to find the correct Oracle version for SCO Unix 5.06

So that we may better diagnose DOWNLOAD problems, please provide the following information.
    - Server name
    - Filename
    - Date/Time
    - Browser + Version
    - O/S + Version
    - Error Msg

This is pretty old. From the certify matrix, you can see the last available versions this platform supported were 9.0.1 and 8.1.7, just for the Intel SCO Open UNIX 8 with LKP. SCO 5.0 last time I used it was with an Oracle7.3 release. In case you don't have software it'll be hard to find, unless you address this to your Oracle Representative.
Are you absolutely required to run on this version? Otherwise, you could try new software and new oracle releases, unless you want to run unsupported.

Actually SendMailJPkg.SendMail (JavaMail) does work when called out of Forms/Reports 10g against an 11g Database. We just tested it as an alternative because we are having the same issue with UTL_MAIL - It will run from an annonymous PL/SQL block fine, but when you try to compile the same code in Forms Builder (or Report Builder) the compiler chokes and throws the internal error [60603] error. Keep in mind that SendMail does NOT like NULL arguments, so if you are not going to use cc_recipient (i.e. NULL), just don't include it at all in your comma delimited param list. It should work fine then.

  • Compatibilty issues oracle db's on unix /NT

could there be any compatibilty issues if we had oracle db's on unix and
wanted to port information to oracle db on NT or vice versa. What about the
data mine, could all dbs be blended in there regardless of OS they
    originated from.
    null

emctl start dbconsole does not start the database. It starts the dbconsole (i.e. Enterprise Manager). Starting the database is a different task.
You cannot use one dbconsole for both databases. It is designed for only one database. You can either create a second dbconsole for the second database (this will be created on a different port on the same server) or use Grid Control.

  • Oracle client for SCO Unix

    Hi,
Where I can't download oracle client for SCO Unix ?
    Thanks.

You're right. You can't download Oracle client for SCO Unix.
I'm not sure what you mean by "SCO Unix", but if you go to MetaLink and look at the Certification matrix, you see two different listings that make reference to SCO:
Unixware (SCO) - Terminal Oracle release for this platform was 8.1.7.
Intel SCO Open Unix 8 with LKP - Terminal Oracle release for this platform was 9.0.1.
So, I think you're out of luck.

  • BO Enterprise 3.1 SR3 Installation with existing Oracle database

    Hi,
I'm completely new to Business Objects and have been reviewing the installation & planning guides for the installation. I'm hoping to use an existing Oracle 11.2g installation as the location for the CMS / Audit. The guides don't really explain in detail the steps to do this, but say this pre-requisite must bein place prior to running the installation.
The section "Setting up an empty database for the CMS" sumarizes the tasks :-
    create tablespace, schema or database
create new users/passwords for the CMS / Audit
specify correct permissions to create.modify, delete tables and to create procedures
Does anyone know of any further documentation that expands on the above to detail the steps further ?
    Regards,
    Brian.

    Hi Brian,
Have you looked at the XI 3.1 Installation Guide for Unix? This has information specific to Oracle (page 38).
    The PDF is available at:

  • Oracle Installer Problem while installing Oracle 9i on HP Unix

    Hi Everyone ,
I had earlier installed 9.2.0.1 on Linux and had no probs whatsoever . When i am trying to install Oracle 9.2.0.1 on HP Unix , the Oracle Installer opens up a window saying CHOOSE JDK HOME DIRECTORY . I have already set the PATH environment variable to point to /opt/java1.4 and /opt/java1.4/jre/bin and also JAVA_HOME to point to /opt/java1.4 . Even after trying to put the directory information it refuses to go thru giving the Error INVALID JDK HOME.PLEASE ENTER CORRECT JDK LOCATION.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Ravi

This could be due to you have multiple JDK homes like java1.4 and java1.3. Instead of type JDK home in the windows box, try to browse and select the JDK home and try it. Otherwise, if you have multiple JDK homes, then try to remove one of them.

  • How to access SQL server in oracle running in aix unix?

    Hi all,
I have oracle database running in IBM AIX OS, and I need to query data in
    SQL SERVER 2000.
    How to do that?
Is there free Sqlserver ODBC drivers for unix?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I prefer heterogenous services over ODBC for this!
I have my notes here, which may help.
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_heterogeneous_database_connections_sql_server.htm
    1. Install Oracle ODBC drivers on the server (your local Oracle database) that will access the remote SQL Server database using the database link.
    2. Setup the ODBC connection on the local Oracle database using the Windows ODBC Data Source Administrator
    3. Test the ODBC drivers to ensure that connectivity is made to the SQL Server database.
    4. Ensure that your global_names parameter is set to False.
    5. Configure the Oracle Heterogeneous services by creating an initodbc.ora file within the Oracle database.
    7. Modify the Listener.ora file.
SID_NAME is the DSN for the remote database.
ORACLE_HOME is the actual Oracle home file path.
PROGRAM tells Oracle to use heterogeneous services.
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME=Cas30C) -- Enter the DSN on this line
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\oracle10gdb) -- Enter your Oracle home on this line
    (PROGRAM = hsodbc) ) )
    8. Modify the Tnsnames.ora file. This is the Oracle database installation accessed by the users to connect to the ODBC drivers
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS_LIST=
    (Address=(PROTOCOL=TCP)
    (HOST=
    -- (Server x)
(PORT=1521))) -- Enter the port on which the server x Oracle installation
    -- is listening
(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=Cas30c)) - Enter the DSN name
(HS=OK) -- Enter this value. It tells Oracle to use hetergeneous services
    9. Reload the listener on local Oracle database
    10. Create a database link on the local Oracle installation that accesses the heterogeneous connection, which, in turn, connect to SQL Server.
    11. Run a SQL Server Select statement from the Oracle installation using the database link.
    Hope this helps. . .
