Oracle 9i on RHEL AS3 / AMD64

I'm trying to install Oracle 9i 64bits on RHEL AS3. The platform is a bi-Opteron 64bits (SUN) with RHEL being Taroon Update 2.
After lots of painful handlings, I succeeded to launch OUI, but all it said to me is that "OUI cannot determine the platform...". Looking all over the Net, I haven't be able to find any useful Help. Ok, so I decided to install Oracle 64 via 32bits OUI. I copied the first CD on disk, modified the oraparam.ini (JRE_LOCATION) to use the JRE I had downloaded (1.4.2) and then (after unset LANG, positionning LD_ASSUME_KERNEL and so on), Yeepee, OUI can launch, and brings me the beautiful "Welcome" screen. Being at the top of joy, I click on "Next", and then, "Exception in thread main", and OUI freezes. All I am able to do is to stop it.
Any idea?

I saw your posts in another thread, but it seems to me that you haven't got exactly the same problem.
In fact, using the "noexec=off" trick, and the ISO file downloaded from OTN, everything gott OK for me. I have been able to launch OUI, and didn't got any other error.
Oh, yes, I forgot to say, I've used the Puschitz way of installation (the one for Oracle9i on RHEL3 32b), i.e. you have to use gcc296, and so on...
Good luck.

• How to install RHEL AS3 on PVS without XF86???

I am trying to install JES05Q4 on RHEL AS3 that is a hosted private virtual server (PVS) at my ISP.
I have succesfully installed many times on my own AS3.
I get the following error when trying on a private virtual server hosted by my ISP

Please help anyone?????
I have not yet modified the jes install script (can I do this?) ...
....but I have configured XF86 using stubs for the kernel-drm rpm that is the source of conflicts with the VPS kernel ...
... yet I abandoned XF86 since have no device (/dev/tty0) and have configured and used vnc over ssh -X tunnel instead. I can successfully create windows from virtual X-server session but still fail to install JES with or without -nodisplay option. I still get the same error in all cases
[root@rupture Linux_x86]# ./installer -nodisplay
Attach to native process failed
or from VNC session that successfully creates new xterm windows fine (without -nodisplay)
[root@rupture Linux_x86]# ./installer
Attach to native process failed
So this failure to attach to native process maybe an unrelated problem to x-windows. Can anyone explain why may not be able install jes from vnc session?
So my ISP's PVS server has:
1) stubbed kernel that I have had to stub around to get XF86 installed and vnc working.
2) no tty0 device
3) what else? - causing attach failure.
To get XF86 installed despite my restricted PVS, I installed a stub for kernel-drm from ximian that does not offer proper X-windows behavior, but it was simple way to get XF86 dependencies out the way. My question is no longer why I cannot do JES install without XF86, but why cannot I do an install from vnc virtual X server session that is otherwise working, whether using -nodisplay option or not?
I used the following stub for kernel-drm
[kenw@rupture kenw]$ rpm -qa | grep ximian
kernel-drm-stub-4.1.0-0.ximian.1
I was then able to install XF86.

Any advice welcome? Is it time to abandon this ISP and private virtual server? Most ISPs do not claim RHEL AS3 support... so I guess I am going to unsupported Fedora IV kernels anyway.
Has anyone successfully deployed JES to an ISP's private virtual server? Is there any solaris container's out there yet?

Previously I installed Oracle on Mandrake 9.2/AMD64 without problems

I had a successfull installation without relinking problems using the orarun.rpm from SLES8.
My system is a Tyan Dual Opteron S2882 with 4GB memory.
I commented out the gcc_old reference in the PATH variable from /etc/profile.d/oracle.sh and added $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 reference to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH there(maybe not needed, I didn't test it without)
Even "relink all" did work.
I only got an error message at the installation of Oracle Text (some missing quote in a script)
The rest was smooth.
Allocation of more than 2 GB SGA worked fine.
But I didn't get the oemapp GUI application. Is it missing in the 9.2.0.4 AMD64 Kit or is there a java problem in runInstaller ?
Creating a database and import of a database worked.
Changing filesystem_io_options to anything else than "none" results in a crashing instance (ext3 Filesystem).

Can you guys please help me understanding the Oracle File Structure on Linux. Its bit complex yet interesting. Waiting for some guides.
Edited by: sachinaddy on Nov 29, 2010 11:54 PMORACLE_BASE is an environment variable used as base directory for an OFA installation. On Unix systems, this is usually /app/oracle or /u01/app/oracle.
ORACLE_HOME refers to either:
a directory where the Oracle software is installed; or
an environment variable pointing to the directory where the Oracle software is installed.
Check current value:
$env | grep ORACLE_HOME
$env | grep ORACLE_BASE
ORACLE INVENTORY
inventory stores information about all Oracle software products installed in all Oracle homes on a machine, provided the product was installed using OUI or oraInst.
you can find the bdump, udump, cdump folders in the location
/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/admin/orcl/you can also check the bdump, udump location by

• Install of Oracle 10g on RHEL 4 AS (newbie)

This is one the toughest installs I've ever done. I'm new to Oracle so bear with me. I'm trying to install Oracle 10g on a RHEL 4 AS system. I started out installig on a RHEL 5 sever but felt that I might be in over my head since it wasn't certified for RHEL 5.
I've successfully installed Oracle 10g on a RHEL 4 AS machine. During my installation I used the "Advanced & Custom" install. I selected this option to install software only. I wanted to learn the implmentation of Oracle and the creation of databases. I'm now trying to start the Oracle/DBMS service and the listener. I've been tyring to get isqlplus to work via the Mozilla browser but I've not been able to login. I enter in the following url "http://oracleserver:5561/isqlplus". I receive the logon screen asking for a usename and password. I don't recall entering in a username other than the default of "dba" and a password. Is this what I should be using on this screen? I'm also being asked to enter in a "Connect Identifier" what does this mean. I don't recall entering in a "Connect Identifier" as part of the installation? When I enter in the "dba" username and password I get the following message:
ERROR - ORA-12162: TNS:net service name is incorrectly specified
What does this mean and what should I be entering?
I was successful at getting the listener to start.
I'm I having problems becuase of my installation process of "Advance, Custom, Software Only". My expectations where that a template database would be created and I would be able to use a GUI interface going forward to configure the system. Very much what you would see when installing SQL 2005 in a Windows environment.
Please work with me to get things working. I really want to learn this.
Thanks

When you perform the install software only, it means so, Software Only. So no database template, no default environment. You'll have to define this on your own. It could be by means of dbca or manually.
isqlplus could start, but it doesn't have any database to connect to. The username/password and database service you are being prompted are the connect descriptor to an existing database and a database user/password. At this time none of them exist.
I could tell you, you are doing well, your listener and isqlplus are properly working, so next step, create your database.
As stated above, just issue the dbca command from the os prompt and go through the assistant.

####### some settings
groupadd dba
groupadd oinstall
groupadd oracle
useradd -g dba -G oinstall,oracle -m oracle
passwd oracle
mkdir /ora8

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib
export ORACLE_SID=perfdb
export ORACLE_TERM=vt100
export ORA_NLS33=$ORACLE_HOME/ocommon/nls/admin/data
umask 022
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
##### thereafter i run installer
./runInstaller
It goes smoothly and later it gives linking error. I ignore them at this stage.
#### thereafter I apply the patch
tar xzf /tmp/glibc2.1.3_stub.tgz
./setup_stubs
#### Therafter i run dbassist and I create the db and all went well.
When i followed the same procedure in RHEL 3.0 it goes smooth till applying patch glibc2.1.3_stub.tgz but thereafter when i try to create db using dbassist it gives me error like :
ORA-12545 Connect failed because target host or object does not exist.
Even if i tried to run svrmgrl it gives me error
:ORA-12545 Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
Could anyone help me in resolving that ? the same installation procedure works well for Redhat 8.0/9.0
Thanks

What version of gcc are you using?
Check out this link: http://www.redhat.com/archives/taroon-list/2004-June/msg00030.html
All 8i and 9i releases are built with 2.9x versions of gcc, so you might have to downgrade gcc in order to get 8i running.

• Upgrade steps needed - Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g in RHEL 4

Hello,
Am in the process of upgrading oracle 10g with 10.1.4.3 IDM,10.1.0.5 DB and 10.1.4.2 portal version to Oracle 11g. Now I see that there are some compatibilities in the OS. I have RHEL 4 and when I check the compatibility guide I see that it is possible to install/upgrade the oracle to 11g. But am worried on the kernel and packages which is needed for Oracle 11g. If there is any step by step assistance on this please guide me. Also I have an another query can I upgrade the OS RHEL 4 to RHEL 5 and then Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g. Will I be seeing any issue after the OS upgrade with product upgrade. Kindly advise me.
R/Ganesh

This is all about libraries, some libraries between RHEL 4 and 5 had change and this may lead to malfunction of some products, cause they have been copiled using old libraries that doesn't exist now, even I think in the upgradres there are compatibility modes where let you keep old libraries, anyway seems a difficult thing to do. If you plan to move RHEL 4 to 5, I think this is your first step and then install again the Portal in the old version, and then make the upgrade, If you make this step by step, as firts install RHEL 5, install db, install portal, upgrade DB and finaly upgrade portal, would be easier. You may want to read the Master note for this upgrades in oracle Support 873751.1

Let me know if have any document or any one is doing anything's similar.

• Oracle 8i on RedHat AS3.0

Hi all,
I want to find and to install an Oracle 8i (8.1.7) database on a RH AS3.
But, 8i isn't supported by oracle anymore... How can I get it ?
I found a .tar, I launch "runInstaller", the welcome window opens but the "Next" button doesn't work, nothing happens! The only thing I can do is close the window...
Is there a way to solve this problem ?
Thank you for your help.
I'm sorry my english isn't good enough :(

Yes in fact we want to "securely" migrate from Tru64 to Linux.
We have Oracle 8i databases on Tru64. We thought it might be more secure to use Oracle 8i on Linux and not 9i or 10g.
We are going to use this databases on Oracle 10g but we have to do a lot of tests.. :(
I'm going to try "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.19"
Thx
:)
