Oracle 9i TEMP tablespace backup problem using RMAN!

Oracle8/8i whole backup is ok for our backup software(using RMAN without RC database), but for Oracle 9i, I get following error messages when backing up temp tablespace.
1. RMAN-20202: tablespace not found in the recovery catalog
2. RMAN-06019: could not translate tablespace name "TEMP"
I check some views of Oracle9i, and know some changes happen for temp tablespace in 9i, but how to deal with this problem. Any idea, please!

In 9i RMAN does not restore temporary datafiles. Instead, you should create them after your restore. I believe that Oracle is going to make a change to this in the next release of 9i and have RMAN create the temporary files. You can view the temporary datafiles @ v$tempfile.
I believe RMAN doesn't restore temporary files because they are locally managed and not in the control files. RMAN reads the controlfile of the target database to obtain info about backups, datafiles, etc.
Hope this helps.

  • Synchronous multimaster replication Backup strategy using RMAN

    Hi all,
    I am using synchronous multimaster replication. my question is backup strategy has to perofirm in all the master site or only in any of 1 mastersite? what all problems will encounter in RMAn backup in my scenario please help me out with your suggestion
    nagaraj.K
    [email protected]

    You ask: "I want to configure backup strategy using RMAN. any one can help me that"
    And the answer is clearly no we can not.
    An RMAN backup strategy depends on your SLA (Service Level Agreement) with your customers that you didn't post. What is your down-time window? What is your skill set?
    You ask: "How to configure for RMAN Incremental backup?"
    Read the docs at http://tahiti.oracle.com for your version (which you didn't mention).
    You ask: "What will be backup space and there size ?"
    We have no idea. Are you going to create an image copy or a backup set? Read the docs and learn the difference. Are you going to turn on compression? Are you going to back up only changed blocks? We don't know.
    You ask: "how to manage growing online archiving files?"
    Again we can't help you without knowing your SLA. How many MG/GB are they? What period of time do you need to retain them to meet your SLA? When you figure this out back up to tape those you don't need to keep on the server.
    You ask: "how to manage growing data and there disk space?"
    This is one we can answer: BUY MORE DISK! That was easy.
    You ask: "How we can give good performance our CPU and memory?"
    Do you really expect that we can with zero knowledge of your environment, your version, your application, etc. distill into a few short paragraphs the collective wisdom of Cary Millsap, Jonathan Lewis, and the rest of the Oak Table Network membership?
    Of course we can not. So what you need to do is buy Cary's book, Jonathan's book, and take their classes.
    You ask: "we need keep all archive log in backup files or we need to remove old archive files?"
    Remove the old ones after being absolutely sure you have a good backup.
    You ask: "where we can take backup tape drive,SAN,disk removable hard disk? which one is better?"
    No one solution is better than the other. They are all adequate.

  • Cold backup downtime using RMAN

    Over the weekend I performed a cold RMAN backup on a 3.6 TB
    database. Because a lot of the database was backed up with
    transportable tablespaces, the net amount being backed up was
    approximately 365 Gb. I took down the database at 11:00 and the
    script finished at 4am, but in reviewing the logs, the database
    actually appears to have been opened at 2am.
    I assumed that the database would be down the entirety of the
    backup. Can anyone help me understand why the database was
    opened so long before the RMAN command completed? Was the
    backup adversely affected in any way by a user obtaining access
    prior to the RMAN process completing.
    Any information greatly appreciated.

    unfortunately i think you misunderstood the original question. i took the database down to do the cold backup. in order to use rman, you have to startup nomount the instance.
    the script run was:
    #!/usr/bin/ksh
    rman msglog '/data2/oracle2/local/log/rman_lvl0.log' <<EOF
    @connect.rman
    run {
    backup incremental level 0 tag full_bkup0 database diskratio=0;
    alter database open;
    exit;
    EOF
    exit
    the "alter database open" tells RMAN to open the database once the backup is completed. i had a process running that checked each 10 seconds to see if the PID for the RMAN process was still running. The process itself appears to have run for an additional 2 hours after the database was opened.
    there is nothing on the system to suggest that the database was opened by anything other than RMAN. was the database opened prematurely? was the additional time spent in the RMAN script doing the sync in the database? did the usage by the user prior to RMAN completing invalidate the backup? (so far the cloning is still running without error).

  • Backup database using RMAN

    Hi,
    I wanted to perform the first backup with RMAN and I used this command and I got error:
    RMAN> BACKUP AS COPY DATABASE;
    "can not backup or copy active file in noarchivelog mode".
    But in order to turn on the log_mode to ARCHIVELOG, first I need to do shutdown the db and perform the backup. Right?
    So how can I get my first backup using RMAN if the log mode is in NOARCHIVELOG mode?
    I also performed this command successfully...
    RMAN> configure controlfile autobackup on;
    new RMAN configuration parameter are successfully stored...
    but I'm not sure the controlfiles are being backed up. How can I verify this and where I can find the controlfile backup file?
    Thanks,

    So how can I get my first backup using RMAN if the log mode is in NOARCHIVELOG mode?You can do RMAN backups with DB in NOARCHIVELOG mode, but the DB must be MOUNTED and not OPEN. You can do something like the following :
    $ $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman nocatalog
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Thu Feb 9 01:18:08 2006
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle.  All rights reserved.
    RMAN> connect target
    connected to target database: DB102 (DBID=XXXXXXXXX)
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
    RMAN> run { allocate channel d1 type disk;
    2> shutdown;
    3> startup mount;
    4> configure controlfile autobackup on;
    5> backup database;
    6> sql 'alter database open';
    7> }
    I'm not sure the controlfiles are being backed up. How can I verify this and where I can find the controlfile backup file?
    RMAN> list backup of controlfile;

  • Duplicate Oracle Database 8.1.7.0 using RMAN

    An old database needs to be duplicated... :(
    We have an old database named TAPES running on Windows 2003 (32bit) and Oracle 8.1.7.0
    The team wants to duplicate / clone this database to another location. We have setup another server, with Windows 2003 and installed Oracle Software 8.1.7.0 with
    starter database. The two machines A and B has no network connection (they are on different sites). Also the structure of the machines are different (the location of the database files are different)
    How can I duplicate this using RMAN. We cannot afford any downtime on TAPES prod. The idea is:
    -backup TAPES prod using RMAN (hot backup)
    -copy and tranport the backup files to the remote machine B
    -restore (and recover) the RMAN backup to Machine B
    -the duplicate database has the same name
    In oracle 9i, 10g and 11g, this is easy...and i must admit...i dont know how to do it in Oracle 8.1.7.0...
    I need help... :(
    thanks a lot!

    thanks...i saw one article with this approach..but the document did not present the detailed process...do you have one? i am still searching for a good procedure to follow...since it is an old database and focusing/studying old versions like this is a pain in the a**... :(

  • Backup SunMC Using RMAN

    Hi,
    I know that SUN has a utility calls es-backup to backup the SunMC. However, since we could NOT affort to shutdown the SunMC for backup, can we use RMAN to backup SunMC Oracle database, SunMC Config files? This means that SunMC Processes are running during backup operation. Can I use this immage to restore? Thanks
    Appreciate your help very much.

    use es-backup with -o option; which does online backup. Make sure that oracle is running in archive mode. To configure this you must have run
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-config -a
    I hope this will help.
    Cheers,

    we have 11.5.10.2 instance
    Node 1 = Application Tier ( 11.5.10.2)
    Node 2 = DB Tier ( 9.2.0.7)
    as of now, we are taking daily cold backup of both instances.
    we want to implement RMAN online backup for DB and take cold backup every week end only.
    so, what are the best procedures for implementing RMAN for 11i Database.
    Please share your experience, if you have anybody implemented?
    which one you prefer in RMAN backup ( backupsets or copy option or backupsets with compressed option) interms of performance.. our db size is 60 GB only.
    we apply apps tier patches very rarely . so we want to take RMAN online backup for DB daily and take cold backup for entire apps and db in the week ends.

    Hi,
    This time, i am going to implement for Oracle 11i Database. thats why, i need you guys advice regarding 11i Database.Well, the same is applicable to 11i/R12 databases. You just need to configure RMAN the same way you configure it on any standalone database.
    If you have implemented any where RMAN, can you share, how you are taking RMAN backup? I can share the scripts we use for backup using RMAN. If you are interested, let me know and I shall send it by email.
    if we want to clone, are you cloning the TEST instance with RMAN backup or using cold backup.We use both, depends on the time frame of the cloning task and whether it is possible to use cold backup for cloning or not.
    Please have a look at the following notes, it should be helpful.

  • Restore Database with Oracle 9i with a New Host using RMAN

    Gurus,
    I am trying to restore a database from some RMAN created files on a new host with a new directory structure for some testing. I do not have access to the source database.
    The database is Oracle 9i.
    The files that have been created are the following:
    'C-2995630462-20110214-00' is the control file and SP file backup.
    'B_ABM4KAJ5_1_1' is the database backup.
    B_ACM4KARS_1_1 and B_AAM4KAIV_1_1 are archived redo logs
    Here is the RMAN listing from when the files were created:

    I am new to using RMAN and I'm hoping someone could point me in a direction of some documentation to assist with the scenario described above. I've looked at several Oracle documents but have been unable to find a way to separate out the spfile from the control file.
    Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Meeran.
    I have attempted to follow the directions from the RMAN document that you posted and have run into the following error:

    Am I not correctly connected to the target?
    It looks like it correctly tried to create a dummy spfile, but when attempting the restore from the file it breaks.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Backup/restore using RMAN with no catalog

    Hi all,
    Can someone tell me if this is correct:
    I have two identical machines, same configuration and same file structure, everything is the same.
    On machine A, I have a 9.2.0.7 database running. I take a hot backup and try to restore it on machine B.
    Note: I am using RMAN for backup/restore whith no catalog.
    This is how I perform backup on machine A:
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL C1 TYPE DISK;
    SQL 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL=0 CUMULATIVE format '/backup/level0_%u' BACKUP CURRENT CONTROLFILE format '/backup/control_primary' FORCE;
    SQL 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT';
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL format '/backup/archivelogs_%s_%t';
    On machine B, here is how I perform restore:
    SET DBID 1221334455;
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM '/backup/control_primary';
    ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
    RESTORE DATABASE VALIDATE;
    RESTORE DATABASE;
    Recover database;
    Thanks,

    You forgot to restore the spfile or pfile on the second node to go to nomount state.
    OR
    You can use RMAN Duplicate to do this.

  • Nokia Lumia 530 backup problem (Using Windows 8.1)

    My phone has suddenly stopped backing up, even though it keeps telling me it hasn't been backed up for some time, and needs to be backed up. When I tell it to back up, it gets to about 99%, and then I get the message "there was a problem backing up your settings. Try again later."  What exactly does "later" mean? I've been trying at various times of the day every day for about 4-5 weeks now. From what I've read on the internet, this does appear to be quite a widespread problem.
    Other things I have tried:
    Turning the phone off and back on again.
    Unchecking the "Apps back up" button
    Uchecking the "Settings back up" button
    Checking both backup buttons again
    Deleting previous back ups using my phone
    Logging into One Drive on my laptop and manually deleting previous backups
    Changing the screen time out on my phone to 15 minutes (as opposed to 1 minute)
    Making sure I have a good phone and wifi signal, and having the phone plugged into the charger
    None of this has had any effect!!!!
    The strange thing is that when I go onto One Drive, it tells me that it did back up (I've only got the one phone, so there's no chance I'm getting confused between phones.)
    Please does anyone have any advice? Also, is there a way of telling my phone to automatically back up at regular intervals, eg once a week, or once a month, so I don't have to keep thinking about it?
    Thank you for reading all this!

    Hi, TulaTheQuang. Have you tried rebooting your phone by pressing the power and volume down keys simultaneously for 10-15 seconds? Also, check if all system apps on your phone are up to date. Go to Settings> applications> store> check for updates. Check if you will be able to successfully backup your files.
    We'll wait for your response.

  • Need help with Backup Recovery using Rman - Point in Time.

    Hi all,
    I am trying to recover my database to a certain point in time. Here are the details below.
    Oracle database version is. 11G R1. on 2 Node RAC. OS is AIX.
    Database name is Sales.
    Due to a mistake by the Application team, the database is written over by bad data. Now I have to restore the database in to a point in time, where the database was good.
    For this, i took a whole (full) RMAN backup, everything, all the archivelog files and Controlfiles as well.
    After doing this, i dropped the entire database. So now everything is clean.
    Now i have to restore and recover the database to this point in time.. 03/16/2011 12:45:00
    Please guide.
    The backups are located at.. /backup/sales/rman/
    I am trying various things, but each time i get the msg..
    ORA-01507: database not mounted
    I understand.. the reason for this message is the controlfile does not exist.. as the database is in mount mode. But as i said.. i have dropped the database in order to proceed with entire restoration.
    But i have taken a whole backup.. which also includes the controlfiles + archivefiles.
    Please guide.. with proper steps and commands.

    Hi,
    Priror to start with restore and recovery - Try to restore the control file from backups "/backup/sales/rman/"
    Then further you can mount the db and further carry on with recovery (catalog the backups prior to recovery)

  • How to backup database using RMAN on another server's tape?

    Dear All,
    Please give me an advise what parameters I should set up in RMAN to backup database on another server's tape.
    Best wishies,
    Givi

    I am connected to the database server from the server
    where I have tape, but Rman is searching tape on
    database server.I am not sure I understabd the above statement, but at the Operating System Level, you must ensure that from the Server you are running RMAN, it is configured to see the Tape Drive of the other Server. Once the Remote Tape is mounted with any name (say sbt) on the Local Server (however it is done with), then RMAN can configure the channels to use it.
    If you cannot get this access at the Operating System Level, then do not bother trying RMAN to access it.
